How Many Minis Can I 3D Print with Only 1 Bottle?

- One of the top questions people ask when they start looking at 3d printing Warhammer is how many models can they get from 1 bottle? Turns out quite a lot! From this 1 bottle I managed to get over $400 worth.

Can you email where you found the STL files to anyone who asks?
I’d rather spend 60 minutes on the front side of a print getting the setup right instead of burning through 12 hours of printing for a plate of fails.
A year ago I would agree with you but I'm become too accustomed to presupports, saying that I'm supporting a warlord titan in the near future lol
@@battlebrothersam imagine only half of the parts failing midway... 200 bucks worth of resin for the bin if it is pre hollowed ?
Once it gets up to that size of model any failure is costly! To be fair though my warhound was presupported and the supports were miles ahead of what I would be able to do
@@battlebrothersam Because someone with the knowhow spent the time to put them on instead of head clicking AUTO and rubbing holy oils to appease the machine spirit.
@@Jokreher you know me too well brother LOL lychee magic button and real time island detection has become my go to
Presupported files are great and all, but I'd definitely encourage anyone getting into 3d printing minis to learn how to do their own supports. My print success rate went through the roof when I started doing it. It's not hard to learn and the tools in Lychee slicer do a lot of the hard work for you. It's a great skill to pickup.
The magic button is a god send doc! Without lychee I would've struggled to support models
Learning how to support is really good, even using presupported models you can spot issues for your set up that can be corrected ahead of time.
But I hate doing them
This. The first thing I did picking up 3DP was watch a ton of tutorials on supporting prints. Sure you will take time to figure out what works best for you, but once you are there it's kinda fun.
Out of 7 bottles, ~350$ CAD:
- 1.5k cities of sigmar freeguild (75 models)
- 1k Flesheater courts (30 models)
- 1k Nighthaunt (30 models)
- 3k Seraphon (~50 models + kroak + 6 dinosaurs)
- 2k Be'lakor army (be'lakor + a ton of bloodletter sized minis)
- A Goblin Blood Bowl team (16 models)
- Ossirach Warcry warband (12 models)
- Tau kill team (15ish models)
- Kroot kill team (12 models)
- Intercessor kill team (8 models)
- 3 Armigers
- A Battletech lance (4 models)
- ~60 cyberpunk models for Five Parsecs from Home
IIRC after doing the math, JUST the Seraphon monsters covered the cost of the resin, and the entire Seraphon army covered the cost of the printer and the wash/cure station. Everything after it was like 75% savings if you take into account minor failures, cost of gloves and towels, and the cost of files. Something GW sells for 120$ (an imperial knight) costs about 12$ to print + 20$ for a high quality file (if you don't use the free one floating around) that you can the reuse as much as you want.
I have epsid for my printer and supplies multiple times over at this point it's not even funny anymore 😂
Note that the CAD cost of an imperial knight has risen to 200$ since I last checked (I went off memory and severely low balled it) - meaning for the same price in resin you can print about 6 of them.
Where did you get the files?
I've sliced a warhound titan out of curiosity and it punched in at about 1.5kg of resin required. With my current resin blend that's a whopping $60-70 of materials, and unlike Forge World it actually includes weapons 😆
where did you get the goblin stl?
I've said it once ill say it again, I'm really enjoying watching the channel grow and seeing you be more confident on camera. Its not often I get to see a channel I think is gonna be huge at its beginning. carry on brother!
Thanks brother doc! I owe everything to you lot!
Honestly, this video probably felt like a failure at some points, but I found this incredibly useful seeing some of the issues you had and how to deal with them
Thanks brother! It definitely had its ups and downs
1 thing that I personally could have tied this army together, is printing all the models by the same creator. The GRETCHIN ARE AMAZING! But they just seem a bit off form the rest of the army. Besides that though, keep up the great work, you just earned a new subscriber
Thanks! That was the goal but they just kept failing lol
I think your issue is either build plate level or bottom layer exposure, prints stuck to the FEP are typically one or both of those issues and not the supports failing. I find my Saturn 2 unlevels really fast because of the ball joint. I also prefer to go in with Chitu and add a raft to the models, just saves headaches with removal. You can also add some fatter supports to the initial contact points. Also, good on pointing out mistakes, they happen and they cost resin. Overall I printed about 4K points of HH space marines and a 3K Lizardman army for WHFB 8th with about 3ish 1kg bottles. At $40-50 each it's still a big savings.
Orks are an awesome choice for 3D printing, I know most of the models that you printed and have been looking forward to printing them off myself.
They are possibly the best army to 3d print with the amount of creators for them! I've been wanting to print the boys since they were released they are great quality
Where can I find those orcs? Can't find good stl...

You're a legend and my story is the same as yours, got into 40k as a kid, dropped out, now I'm thinking of getting into it again but the prices are unreal. Thank goodness for 3D printing.
Great video! I love the thoroughness of the process and especially the honesty about failed prints!
Thank you for your service sir! It is important to mention resin attrition from inevitable failures, thankfully resin is cheap enough it's not worth sweating about "recycling" bits and pieces.
Thanks brother!
Great video! It was your content which encouraged me to get into 3D Printing to help my son increase his Armies and collection. I got the Elegoo Mars 3 Pro in the end as it was on special offer. He's got quite a few Space Marines now. I just struggle to know what half of the different characters are called! Lol. I've started printing a necron army now so we can have a few battles soon. Would love to do an Orc army ASAP but haven't managed to collect many files yet.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I remember you saying that you were doing it for your son brother Chris! Glad your getting stuck in 😁😁
I think adding links to the creators your using to get the models would be a huge benefit to your video. There are so many creators out there it is impossible to know which models you're using if I wanted to go print a bunch of orks after watching your video.
I've done it in the past and unfortunately geedubs is always watching, if the creator OKs it then Ill put them in.
He went through this before. He does not want to be responsible for the stl sources to be taken down. Well anyways, it is very easy to do a search on MMF for whatever you need
great vid! you and just vlad are the best vids for learning about 3d printing, why, because you guys keep it simple!! already hit the like and everything. i still dont have mine, ordered it yesterday, since its 12.03 now on elegoo got the mars 4....because it was on sale during prime day at 229....mars 3 was 221 figure ill go up one plus kit and everything.....
anyhow long short.....on one other vid the guy said he managed to get 70 minis.....few big ones and about 30 fails in his one bottle of resin.......so im looking at hoping as a new comer to get at least 50 plus hopefully...
love the way you mention the 'armies' only reason i got the printer was because its costly buying so many 'armies' from people off etsy.
sorry for english, italian first canadian second.
great vid!! sure you youtubers hear that way too much! :)
Loving the channel Sam - the video quality over the past few months has just exploded.
Great work!
Thanks brother!
Great video! I've been 3D printing for well over a year now, but I'm using a smaller size printer (Anycubic Photon Mono). I chose it because of some possible issues with larger format printers that could result in a higher rate of failure. The larger size of the FEP has more pull and that can really do a number on lift and retraction, which just makes failures more of an issue. I generally go with presupported models as well, just for the pure ease of it. Works out mostly OK, but sometimes you get a presupported model that just... Has issues. It happens.
On a side note, I don't play Warhammer, I print for D&D and just painting projects. At the time, I figured I already played Magic the Gathering, no need to go into debt playing another game! I do have a load of Saurians printed, from OnePageRules and I have two small warbands printed for a game called Nebula (from CastNPlay), so I may just be getting into wargaming after all!
Thanks! Yes I've noticed after moving from the Mars 2 Pro up to the saturn there is a higher chance of failure like you say with suction force so really the models in the middle have to have pretty strong supports! I've put nfep on my saturn as far as I can tell it helps but like you say some models just don't want to print lol one page rules is a much more streamlined warhammer experience so your definitely moving in the right direction there 😁
Great Vid Mate :) Try to load Your plate less so the FEP will have more space to warp. I normally do no more then 60-70% of build plate and stick to center as much as possibile. I rarely get fail prints. And do a pause after bottom is done to check if its sticked to plate. Saves time and resin.
Keep up the good work and happy printing :)
That actually makes a lot of sense! Thanks brother I'll test it out
when dealing with pre-supported pieces that continuously fail, I recommend using the slicing/supporting program recommended by your printer manufacturer and either A) adding additional supports manually to the pre-supported model or B) get the unsupported model and support it all manually. You should also increase the exposure time slightly. I hope this can work for you if this is a continuous issue you have.
100% agree. i never use pre-supported .
So cool. i want to get a 3d printer so bad for this. Orks are such a good choice too
I had the very same grots, presupported and printed at 70% scale on Saturn 2 and... they worked fine with a vroom speed of 180 or 240 (don't remember)
Sweet, sweet joy of 3d printing
Ah the joys of 3d printing is right what fails for me works for you lmao
Neat video! It'd be nice to know how many points this worked out to.
awesome video, would love to see more reviews of specific creators and "how much does it cost to print x" videos :D
Thanks!
What am I waiting for Brother Sam.... I waste so much time (and money with 100% official models)...
Perhaps I need a good place first, without cats intruders, without dust.
Buying a house is veeeery long in France.
The only good thing in this situation is that 3D printers are more and more amazing each couple of months.
Do you recommand a video or a website about the setup of a personal 3D print workshop ?
Perhaps did you already talk about that, I'll check.
I talk a little about it in my everything you need to 3d print but maybe a grow tent would benefit you for your printer if you get one
How do you clean resin?
Ive printed like 300 models and havent had a failure on an elegoo mars 3 ultra. i guess im lucky
Just depends on the files and how well they are supported 😁
@@battlebrothersam Understandable man. I really love your stuff! Keep up the good work!
Good Lord I didnt know you could print so awesome models?
That file you are showing is from Warchief Gaming for their STLs from their KS Aurobors Coils of the Serpent O.o
I can not stress this enough-temperature MATTERS.
My brother printed a kill team Samurai Inspired Scifi valkyrie Sisters of battle for me And I'm planning on having him do more for me in future And I ended up painting them in red black gold and Silver Sort of like custodes. Because the ones I mostly have are the flying units But kill team rules Doesn't utilize flyers For the sisters of battle. And after I have him do some more of those I'm gonna have him do some grey knights for me And then some Marines with no emblems Anywhere on them So I can make mortifactors
those (formerly)blackcrag orks are beautiful! never had issues with them except where temperature fluctuates. i find fewer failures during the summer but man the winter really screws with my prints.
It must've been my temps then with the grots, or a mix of suction force as well. The boys look amazing though 😍😁
Stationforge has grots with a pirate theme
300 grots... hmmm that's reason enough for me.
Painting them would give me the shivers
Have you ever printed necrons? I want to start but I am nervous.
Fep sheet makes a big difference in fails too
Mr.Modulork is hands down the best ork producer.
Little late here but ive had similar issues with abs like resin and fails…im still fairly new but i suspect the flexibility of abs like means you need sightly heavier supports than otherwise
It's not the lift speed that's the issue. Your settings are totally off. You should be aiming at auto-supporting 75% of the models with smaller support struts that have a contact diameter AND depth of 0.30mm.
Afterwards, on the slicer menu, try this; Exposure time 5, Lift distance 5, Lift speed 100, Bottom exposure 45, Retract speed 150.
The reason for 45 on the bottom exposure is so that it warms the resin up as you print, and as it cures it will give your models a stable base, then the residual light will cure the rest of the print layers.
5 secs exposure is way too long for a mono screen and 45 secs bottom exposure would be too hard to get off the build plate in my opinion but if that works for you then kudos, I will look st the 75% part though
Where do you even find this ork boyz??? Im searching like crazy and find nothing
How do you dry/cure large amounts of resin models at one time?
I just started printing a 1000 point tyranids army and I just had the worst failure. A piece of support broke of and puntured my fep and lcd screen😭
Who was the creator for the ork at 8:55? That model is way too cool for me to not paint...
where can you find those modular ork boyz? i can't find them anywhere
or in general all of the files you used, i'm new to 3d printing and i don't really know where to search for them
Could u do a video discussing magnetic flexi plates? I see them discussed a lot but not a lot in the hobby
Wait, 300 Grots *isn't* a playable Army? This will be awkward news for my brother's dreams...
Hahaha well I'm sure there's ways.... Around it... 😁
Let’s see more videos like this! And do some more ultramarines please!!!!!
I think I will brother!
Great video! I am building orks now and I love the models you used! Who are the artists?
Thanks brother! Do you mean the ones in the video? Or the artists that do orks?
@@battlebrothersam I would like to know who this artist is! Thank you!
where do you get the models from?
Have you tried vulcan resin
Hey new to your channel. love your content! how do you keep the resin odor and VOCs down with just a closet? Im printing currently with a carbon filter and a fan pointed at a window. still get some smell even with plant based resin. any suggestions? TYIA!
What creators were you using for your orks?
Mrmodularork
3:23 Who makes those Orks on the dirt bikes??!!
I don’t trust pre-supported I just use choubox and it’s added supports have really worked vary good for me
Those models are amazing can i have like link or creators names please?
i dont use pre supported files and i have had 2 fails out of 20 prints. maybe using pre supports is not a good idea. your computer can make supports in about 3 seconds.
They can be hit or miss but I wanted to use them so the video can apply to an absolute beginner
Have you tried the Lychee Auto pre supports?
Yup that's what I use when I support
Did you print the warhound titan behind you? I've bought files from two creators and have wasted three bottles of resin and have only half the parts for the model. If you printed it, can I ask which creator you went with? Keep up the good work!
Thanks! I did indeed I'm not sure who the creator is it's the telari warhound as far as I know! A sub sent it to me
Thanks for the quick response! I'm thinking of just using all the misprints to build a looted titan.
that sounds like a cool idea it would be unique i forgot to say when I was printing my warhound the body failed because I ran out of resin lol
Where does one find these presupported creators?
Small question where did you find the files of the total warhammer 3 model
Is that the shaman? I think it was on cults3d under soupwasta shaman but I could be wrong it's been a looooong time since I downloaded it
new to 3d printing: how much does artists ask for comissioned 3d stl files?
You'd have to reach out to a few and get quotes there's no set prices for commissions
@@battlebrothersam thanks!
What resin do you use/recommend? I have been using the Anycubic Eco in grey and found that my models are a bit brittle. Although it could be because I was curing them for 6ish minutes a pop. Would love some more recommendations.
Also you should check out the flexible build plate for resin printers.
Yeah 6 minutes is over curing, I cure for 1-1m30 each side. Overcuring does make it more brittle, I think abs like elegoo is the best I tried so far, I do want to try the standard resin though to see if there's much of a difference
Yeah 6 min is way over curing. Elegoo abs like is great. Ive burned through quite a new bottles of elegoo standard and Anycubic standard. They're decent. Anycubic Standard + is actually really good!
I've used the Anycubic Standard Grey for months (currently 12 bottles down... And I don't like to do that kind of financial math) and I'm currently using a bottle of the Eco stuff. 6 minutes is WAY overkill. Here's a little trick: Put the models you want to cure in a container full of water. Completely submerge the model and then cure it underwater. Exposure to oxygen messes with the curing resin and you can eliminate that by curing underwater. It leaves you with a more sturdy mini (well, less fragile. I mean, it's still resin and it will still shatter if you drop it on a hard surface) and a shorter cure time (30-60 seconds is plenty, depending on the size of the model).
what mnodels did you use?
Mrmodularork
Could someone pls point me in the direction of the shaman model it looked awesome
It was one I downloaded possibly a year ago, it was called the soupwasta shaman, hopefully that helps
Where the hell did you find a Swampcalla Shaman STL?
What was the warboss that failed? Curious
You about made it as difficult on yourself as you could and still ended up with 10 times the vaule of the resin in miniatures. 3d pRiNTinG iS a WAstE OF tiMe.
ReEeeEEeE I did brother I couldve just supported what I had already and possibly squeezed out some more but SURELY the fan boys can't say it's a waste of time now
I'm new to 3d printing and some of the models I have printed have lost detailing where the bulk of the supports r any ideas what I could be doing wrong
hey, where did you get the orks in mega armour from. thanks bro
Great vid. Why did you not add your own supports to the failed models? Was it a time issue?
Thanks brother Carl! Always great to see you commenting 😁 I wanted it to be applicable to an absolute beginner who's more likely to just use presupported files
@@battlebrothersam makes sense. Thanks buddy
I got 1000 points of Heresy models out of a 500g bottle last year; mostly Marines, a couple of Rapiers, attack bikes and a Contemptor.
I've wanted to do one of these challenges again; but between the temperature dropping close to single figures in my area of England and my work pattern, I can't run my resin printer at anything close to the ideal temperature. There's no point heating up an entire room just for the printer when I'm not home to monitor it.

@@battlebrothersam right. I've also printed some stuff next to open window (hoped that it will resolve smell issue). That was bad idea. Resulted in few failures and warped models...
