Welcome! Here we explore, discus, and review the model engines available. 4-stroke gas engines, hit and miss, multi-cylinder, hot-air and steam engines; I'm fascinated by all of them. I love optimising them with simple tweaks and mods, and creating tools as I go. I'm not an engineer, like most of you, but enthusiastic in sharing this hobby.
The number of engines available has risen hugely with CAD-CAM machining, particularly from China. We look at the constant flow of new desktop model engines plus multi-cylinder engines. Any interesting model engines from anywhere! Let me know!
This channel is becoming a place to chat, find out and swap ideas.
I love reading and replying to comments and we can all learn there - I know I do!
You are most welcome here!

Water pump was not turning very much
Correct engineering term is "cam follower", just saying.
The term "retarded" is offensive. Engines suffering from this condition prefer to be called "timing challenged".
Ive just recieved my kit and noticed that the cranks are completely round with parallel machined parts on them, different to yours.
Does this run on gasoline, if so, is it mixed with oil? I have one similar to this and it runs on Ronsol lighter fuel. Do you think this would run on that too?
Yes they run happily on lighter fuel and many modeller hobbyists recommend it for cleanliness, however as you do add two-stroke oil (40:1) you are adding stuff so maybe not so clean burning...we have alcohol-free petrol in NZ for now so I use pump gas, 95 octane plus two stroke oli
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES sorry to be a pain, but would the lighter fuel need to have oil mixed or does it have enough lubricity already?
How's the smell of running a gasoline engine inside the house? Was looking on getting one to the stirling engine collection.
Not too bad smell, especially hit and miss which fire less often than a continuous runner, and tiny displacement
nice
So nice
Stirlingkit have a great selection of solar motors and Kontax make the best "heat of your hand" motors out there, bar none. As for me... Any video that ends with the immortal line "Hey! No butt-sniffing!" must be a great video, right? Sadly you may have to put up with other execrable Dad humor because that's who I am and I seem to be stuck with me. Smash the like button or I won't survive
Exelant video The others didn't sound too happy about the blow torch in the house lol Im no expert on Stirling engines, i only specialize on steam engines, but unless a Stirling engine has a water cooled system, they could reach a point where the air inside has heated so much that the engine will stop until it's cooled
Yeah the others in the house should be used to the blowtorch occasionally lol You're right, it couldn't take that kind of heat forever and most of these model Stirling engines reach a heat "plateau" where the temperature is too hot for best performance, but not getting any hotter. Excepting the blow torch which would melt it I think
On the thermoacoustic you put the burner in front of the stainless wool😎
Bwaaaaaahahahaha "pro tip" my man yes. I will try that! Than k you.... :)
I have got the low temp stirling and it's an absolute joy to just listen to and watch
Yes, if you want gteh VERY best "heat of the hand" engine get one by Kontax UK, model KS90T is simply hypnotic as well as joyous. However with today's test of these Chinese Stirling engines, I think these high temp engines are now better than Kontax's high temp ones. My Kontax Rhombic was a bit sloppy
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES will check them out. The Chinese ones are getting really good with fiber tolerance and better running . Which is great to see
Stirlingkit reached out and asked me to review these engines as a "pack". Want to get some kids away from screens an d into model engineering? Pack is under $160 at time of writing. Thanks Stirlingkit, I enjoyed the models and was impressed

Running fantastic!
Sure is! thanks!!! :)
....... well, and with that....... I'm out
Wha....? Dear Mr 212, surely you are not out of the tooobing game!?!? ....or, maybe you're out of this video in disgust?
Beautiful Thomas, I'm waiting for a painted engine from Jin too! Incidentally, the curved spoke flywheels on the single cylinder engine are on backwards. Why the Chinese do this is beyond me, but if you look at a big horizontal engine with curved spoke flywheels, like say a Blackstone for example- the curved spokes always are fitted facing the opposite direction, to what the Chinese fit them, and it irritates me something terrible! Same as the Retrol Mill Engine- again fitted the wrong way round! 😅😅
Yeah I've looked at this and wondered if I can switch them round. Not that simple due to crankshaft lengths. I'd like it to be right too
I've had nothing but problems with my m19 sadly as it's my favourite. My HM-01 runs but everytime it fires it jumps like crazy. Guessing it's firing far too early. What are your thoughts Thomas?
M19 is great but I think is too small for the governor mechanism, slightest wear changes things. I just finished a massive repeair epic of this motor and the last thing I had to fix was old oil thickening in the intake valve stem, cleaned that out. Yeah every time I use it it's different. HM-01 you must spend the 20 mins or so bending the middle of that contact leaf to delay your ignition to tdc. However, it is a jumper :)
I suggest using CRC Tac2. It comes out the can as a very fluid liquid but sets lijeva thick oil and penetrates really well. Pick done up next time you're at Supercheap
Thanks for the tip! Will; mtry for sure Garet
What fuel are you using ? You mentioned that they don’t work properly when you first get it and it needs quite a bit of work to get it running,am I correct as I want to buy one but don’t want to spend days getting it running,Ava great day, from Sydney,Australia
Dude I overstated that...I use straight 95 octane car petrol with about 3 to 5 % motor mower 2 stroke oil added. Oil is ASE30 motor mower oil. If they don't start first pop, do yo the needles until you feel resistance then back it open 1/4 to a half turn. These days it would be poor luck indeed if it didn't run
G'day mate. With your idle, if you get a set screw the right size and a nut. Put the nut on the screw then screw into the carby and tighten your nut to stop the screw moving and you don't have to use locktite on the threads but a little flat washer between the nut and carb will stop paint being scratched off. It would be nice to see a bit more sheen on the tank. Black radiator surround? They are niiiiice little engines.
Yes this idea or a spring was forming in my mind. Good idea...as a hit n miss guy I am a bit late to variable speed carbs, I still struggle to find the sweet spot but I guess I enjoy the fiddling
Great one Thomas, I guess the canera over saturate the colour and red is deeper in person. H75 is still my favorite engine I have 👍 Addtion of black is a great touch
Hey man! Thanks for the support and comment. It's a classic engine and I'm really happy with the new model to replace my unpainted one. I learned a lot too. :)
@ThomasPCGuruENGINES keep up the great work mate 👍
This red does not suit the engines at all. Are you being sponorsed by them now with the recent vidoes ... I think its a bit too bvious and will reduce the geniune aspect of your vidoes
@GarbagePlateROC seems.like you getting something out of this saga too 😂
Guys, I have tried to make it clear I feel respect and support to Jin who kick started the ic vintage model engine market and is just a Good Bloke with a Family, Doing His Best. For this video about the painted engines, I offered him my support. I am a bit of a fanboy. We email a bit. I am NOT going the route of an affiliate; I don't need 5% hence he can offer a higher discount. All the threads of this are in the videos...anyhoo, I am NOT getting paid I am supporting the hobby I enjoy. However, I did get my first free engine to review from EngineDIY recently, the M96 Oddball. Pretty exciting step for a youtuber...take a guess how much I have spent on this hobby? It gets to the stage you think long and hard before getting another engine; but its the prep and customizing new engines I really enjoy. So the odd free engine at this stage will be accepted!! Stirlingkit are sending me some kids engines to review soon. I accept it may change the aspect of my videos. I always was positive about these models though, for what they are...and my skills with them continue to improve. Same as my video skills. Finally, Jin gave me a decent price on these painted models...I could still have sourced them elsewhere cheaper...but direct from him, at least he got the money. :)
Also, the red is deeper in real life. My camera pinked it a bit. I'll take what life offers and be happy.
Thanks Thomas and Microcosm Jin! Great vid
Our pleasure!

About gluing a piece of brass on the lever...did you have to file the edge down because of the added thickness the brass added? Brass is a bit hard to cut, why not glue on a piece cut out of a soda can? You can cut it with scissors, is very thin, and when/if it wears out just unglue it and replace it.
Mmm good idea Fred. Aluminium is softer. Whatever you got, give it a go
I always considered this just an ugly engine as it does not duplicate a particular style.....but, to see how interesting the mechanism is and how it runs now puts it on my list to own at some point. I had the M92 and have an HM-01 on the way.
Thanks for saying Hi Anthony! It is a bit different
Hello Thomas, hope you are doing well sir. I am getting a Retrol Steam Engine, the one that has a cylinder that I believe needs a drop or so of a specific type of oil. Can you help with what I should use? It’s the steam engine with the beam and cylinder and piston. Thanks. Jerry
Hey Jerry, welcome to the comments man! that engine will happily run with any oil but 30sae "small engine oil" may be the closest you can get to proper steam oil. Steam engine oil is very thick and goopy and needs heat to reach the right viscosity. Smells mighty fine too There are hobbyists supplying real steam oil, or visit your local full-size steam preservation joint with a pill bottle and beg. Seeing as they have it by the 44 gallon drum they'll probably be sympathetic, tell 'em I sent ya
loved the video, although wouldnt it have been easier to just unscrew the tappet screw so it pushes the exhaust valve further all the time instead of gluing the little metal plate to the lever thingy?
Nope, because you'd still get that excess lift as the engine coasted over.

you can email service at stirlingkit or enginediy or Aliexpress (user Smurfs88 has been there years is trustworthy and good value). They are all excellent parts suppliers

I'm a big supporter of Jin , Dong and their business . They took the brave step I to this hobby out of pure passion and heart inspired idea. All of their creations are aimed at those who resonate with the passion @OKMOEngines I'm going to post episodes purely dedicated to their engine
Yea! Thank you. It will be interesting to see a variety of comments to this vid, by the look of it.
Не знал что они скопировали дт54, раньше знал только об их копиях белорусских колёсных тракторов МТЗ
Love the steam tank on your channel, ua-cam.com/video/7nLJ7yb4TB0/v-deo.html . This comment is about the Russian origin of the development, ie дт54, and a lesser-known MT3
Jin's father died suddenly in 2016 just as he was looking forward to being a grand-daddy. As of May 2024, Jin is 38 and brother Dong is 36. Together they are OKMO Engines, Microcosm brand. They have 2 small kids each and despite selling dozens of traditional model engine products there is no big factory, it's just these two designing, prototyping and outsourcing. Through their products I feel Jin's passion for the hobby and it has opened a new world for me. I also support small family business, wherever it is. This is a fan teaser for my next video!
The UA-cam algorithm decided I should see this. Good luck with the sale from Australia! (Oh, and that sneeze-take would have been fine to use. I barely noticed it 😂)
Heh, heh heh,,,sneeze. Yep, thx
Cheers!
:)
As interesting as this is your camera work is making me quite dizzy,so I’m leaving ta ta.
Yes I left some in there that was AWFUL it makes me dizzy too. It was supposed to be edited out
H75 is my favoruite Microcosm(OKMO) engine, followed by R33B , R30 ,R90s and new ramge of their stirling engines (Honey Bee) . I have vidoes of them
Thx! Am watching now
I have to go through my collection and make some tough choices. I have too many, not enough room, and not enough time to run them all as much as I would like.
It's a hard one Henry. I get pleasure from just looking at them and when you tweak, every one is a memory. When I do runs I notice the ones that consistently start and stay running. For this puropose, and simplicity of working on them, the open crank 7cc hit and miss models are the best to run, work on and display. The v-twins probably the hardest to work on. I've found the Holt was not hard to work on given its complexity. the heads come off individually and the valves and cooling are all exposed. So are you more cautious buying new models now? Trying to look at all the pretty engines and figure out what is really a good long-term addition to your collection and interest?
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES It's always been about picking the best one available when I have a bit of money for them. I was very excited to get the M96 for free and am saving up for the VM-01 or 02 when they release it. I would love to have the Holt for a generator rig, but it is about the largest engine I would have space for and I don't really have a good way to justify the cost. The T1 tractor is still my most expensive model and remains a favorite.
Oh why are you selling it ?
Because I have a painted version on the way. This one has no wear signs or rattles or leaks. It runs fine although I suspect it could be tunes better and the spark plugs probably need a clean.
@ThomasPCGuruENGINES did you get the brown one ?😎
I missed the beautiful brown one. Will make do with red
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES red will be great also 😁
Even the mini panhead models leak oil brand new lol
Yep and these V twins are not simple to take apart and reassemble with your own gaskets...
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES Don't need to replace the gaskets. The engine leaks are apart of the experience
Yeah that is a fact
Thomas the manufacturer of the Japanese engine still has them listed on their website unless I am mistaken.
Yep. Haven't contacted him in a while though
you,v got to get that magneeto gowig man
Yeahhhhhh.....could do I suppose but the carb reliability as it is seems a bigger problem to me. Once that is solved....thing is, I have seen a fully complete one sell here for not much more than I paid...so...I wait
We both love our H75 😂 I added the spring also
Hey man! Love the comment :)
Looking at your "before" and "after" I say you improved running quite a bit! I have one on order, I hope to go a bit further, but i have a machine shop to use....that does not mean i Will get a better result, but i will give it a go! Thanks for the video
That would be ointeresting to watch. What are you hoping to do?
The latch on my M96 was backraked too, but not as badly as yours. I think they cut them from a piece that was the same width/too thick for the groove they cut in the valve rod and ground the wrong sides to make them fit.
Hey Henry! Thanks for the update man
Will that engine fit in that Miata
Of course. It might poke out a bit but will sound great
