Welcome! Here we explore, discus, and review the model engines available. 4-stroke gas engines, hit and miss, multi-cylinder, hot-air and steam engines; I'm fascinated by all of them. I love optimising them with simple tweaks and mods, and creating tools as I go. I'm not an engineer, like most of you, but enthusiastic in sharing this hobby.
The number of engines available has risen hugely with CAD-CAM machining, particularly from China. We look at the constant flow of new desktop model engines plus multi-cylinder engines. Any interesting model engines from anywhere! Let me know!
This channel is becoming a place to chat, find out and swap ideas.
I love reading and replying to comments and we can all learn there - I know I do!
You are most welcome here!

Awesome!!!!! Have you ever tryed the Armstrong electrostatic boiler?
I have never heard of this ! ""There was one at the Royal Polytechnic Institution in London with forty-six jets, and which gave sparks two feet long; it was a fearsome machine, making a deafening noise, and producing 22-inch (560 mm) sparks; it knocked out a man who got too close and killed a large Newfoundland dog. (I hope the latter was not deliberate, but I suspect it was) The electrical breakdown strength of air at sea level is about 30 kV/cm, so that represents 1,680 kV. Over a million volts!" - Googled
Bonjour Thomas, Everything seems simple in your hands ! For information, the two screws in the cylinder are actually called "drain cocks" and are used to let the water not compressible go out of the cylinder when it is cold. In real life, they are closed only when the cylinders are really hot to avoid any damage due to remaining water in. I don't see any pressure gauge, it could be interesting to add one to know the working pressure. Amicalement, Raphaël
I remembered "drain cocks" later...thank you. I'm glad my viewers don't mind when I use the wrong words on the spot. Which I do all the time!

Tried again and tried to take the shipping insurance off...$15.50...and that failed. The only away I can buy it is WITH the insurance. So back to $330 US It appears the site remembers everything you do..... Perhaps you can try via someone else's computer/computer address and see what gives..... I'd rather see that 5% "cashback" taken off before I pay for it......I can't see how that cashback will work with international/credit card payments?
Hmmm, that sucks...do try a few things. Like all modern retailers, they will try a few tricks, but...if all else fails email their support service (at) stirlingkit (dot) com or monacai1818 (at) gmail.com or their listed
It looks like a good deal for that low price for sure! 😊
I agree, it's a great deal for the level of detail and engineering. Just tried to buy this kit and it refused the thomas15 code saying the standard 15% was already applied so no further discount. $330 price... not $280.50 perhaps you might take that up with Stirling?
I'm going to look into that, thanks for raising it. I will do it right now. Did you get the same thing saying $280 though? On the page? Still says 280 for me. I sent a snapshot to stirlingkit. Check that if you proceed, right before you pay, the amount is right. Look for other charges added on, like freight insurance, if you feel safe to your country, don't pay for that. I don't mind if I don't get "credit" for the referral in any way (I don't do it for the shop credits) but I appreciate you letting me know:)

Thanks! I'm working on getting this thing going
Great video, how do you get the model with the governor? none of the systems I have seen show that as an option.
The one with the governor is diesel, the others are the sparkplug-equiped petrol version, out for ages, Aliexpress was where I got it but they're a bit pre-production I think
Amazing machine. Greetings from the Netherlands.😊
Hallo! Hoe gaat het? Bedankt voor je begroeting in het opmerkingengedeelte!
Simply beautiful
Thank you! Cheers! It is pretty, I will get her going!
I m new to this channel but I have also been building model engines based on Find Hansen's explanations. Some of them are posted on my channel. Feel free to contact and keep up the good content👍
Many thanks for dropping a comment, your contact and offer.. I will explore your channel and I appreciate the offer of help and info! There are some talented engineers out there, it seems; respect! I love your models. I assume you are ok if I show some footage of, and direct people to your channel?
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES Yes, of course it is not a problem. Thanks a lot and let me know if you need anything!
@@vellamechanicalservices6836 Wow, I haven't seen your engines before. Fantastic work and the engines run very nicely! Solid engineering and i guess without rubber piston rings... I am not against these rings, they are ok for slow running petrol engines with low compression, but not for a diesel engine.
Bravo.......crack the fitting on top of cylinder injector ......fuel should squirt out.....and heat the cylinder.......cheers
Cheers Matt. I've done that like 4 times and each time it gets harder to seal. GOT THE INJECTOR PUIMP WORKING now adjusting flow
17:43 The shaft and gears should be doable shear. As in being supported on both sides. The governor especially. Without support you see what you get. It's floppy! (That's the technical term!) You will probably have a better chance of getting it running by putting a carburetor on it. And a sparkplug in it!...
I know what you mean :)
Fair statement and you are right. We cannot offer the engine completely pre-assembled due to product liability and many other regulations here in Germany. If it is offered as a kit, the liability does not lie with us as the manufacturer. We have to take this into account. We simply cannot offer the engine at this price. Find Hansen's aim was always to run the engine as slowly as possible and that is also our aim. And I can say that it is a pleasure to watch the engine idling smoothly and slowly.
In all my engine videos, I love the sound of engines and slow idling as well. My hat is off to you sir, we watch your efforts with interest and appreciate your reply! Vielen Dank!
Forgive me for my colourful characterization of German engineers as perfectionists! There's much to be proud of in that reputation :)
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES I am absolutely fine with it! Had to laugh when you said "NEIN", perfectly pronounced btw!
I would pay $1600 for that outstanding quality product. Frankly its wrong to pay full price and be the lab rats for the product that dont even work right out of the box . I think there is a differnce between inspired ( with respect to the original design that he legally aquired )and stolen design which seems to be in this case with chinese model 😅
Ok, I'll think about that...I'm not sure about stolen but I do feel lab ratty, and not happy. I need to keep the manufacturer on board for now tho' so I will be chill. I do value you guys comments and opinions. Thanks for moderating your comment :)
That's an interesting engine.
Yes, it is. Even more so if/when it goes. Marketed as "educational toy"
I'll get that translation of Shiyi's help and work on my engine tomorrow :)
Would have loved to own such an engine and maybe built an rc tractor or similar. But unfortunately, they cost way too much
This engine can be found from US$150 but not just before Christmas
You need to put in oil with the diesel fuel. Like ATF or light weight oil
If I get it going at all
What a load of rubbish!. Personally, I would demand a full refund Thomas. The petrol version seems to be relatively trouble free!
Relatively, I've seen other opinions tho. Refund is an option, it's not great is it
Where can i buy this Engine with shipping to germany?
Aliexpress
Frankly for the amount of money I've spent on these Chinese engines. Although yes they're far cheaper than something that's really properly sorted out I expect more. I'm sick to death of spending exponentially more time trying to sort these things than being able to just run them. I don't have the money to be throwing away on these things anymore. Pretty much over it
Yes me too.. I've found that Microcosm/ Eachine are the biggest culprits. Terrible bearings, and things not assembled correctly. Enjomor seem to be the least troublesome, so far!
It is variable. I don't think the engineers are out to scam us, but their machinist manufacturers might be...Microcosm has improved vastly. The original was appalling! Enjomor, as you say, improved vastly. MUSA I think does his own machining and is outstanding. I notice also that the prices seem to be increasing...what's with that? You certainly need to keep your wits about you! As long as I can successfully continue to get them going OK without too much fuss, and the alternatives are 4x more expensive, I'll continue to look at Chinese gear
Put the split in the rod big end bearing in line with the cylinder instead of the cap/end of rod!!! This will auto align the caps. I'm building an inline 4 IC engine and there was no way to locate the main caps like in full scale practice, Well if I had a shaper, grumble grumble...... Also drilled a small hole in the split of the inserts with matching holes in the caps for hollow oil/anti rotation screws. PS building an old Coles Power Models Holt 75 kit that I have had for over 30 years, glad to get back working on it!
Thanks! I'll have to look at that.
Having an engine made by China is bad enough. They have no idea about material specifications or quality. As for Engineering design, they are clueless. All of those silly little brass gears are way too small and will wear out in no time if you get it to run at all. ...😮🤔🙄😳🇬🇧
Perhaps, my friend....but it's the price of admission. The manufacturer deserves respect for getting in contact with me within an hour of this video going up, where he says he will send me many upgraded and new version parts for fee. He didn't need to do that. Progress: Now I have the binding and water pump dragging fixed, the gears seem strong enough. Keep in touch
@ThomasPCGuruENGINES Fair enough...It would seem you've become their new test pilot. Interested to see what they do about those little gears and fixing to the shafts...Grub screws on the driving gears won't cut it IMO....🤔😳🇬🇧
I have a lot of sympathy for what you say, believe me :)
Bonjour Thomas, How lucky you are t have a wife able to translate chinese texts ! I would have liked to have your skillness because all my chinese engines have had monor or major problems, they are not tested before the sell. For example, I have one which has no cmpression and even my skill friends have not been able to rebuild its cylinder head with its tiny valves 😭 You are definetely too far from my home 😁 Amicalement, Raphaël
I would enjoy to work with you my friend. Other side of the world...
Similar issues, my HM-01 had near zero compression and I could never get it to run. Between that and watching fail videos like this I am kind of done with Chinese engines at this point. Moved on to vintage USA or AU made Stirling and Flame Gulpers and have not been stumped yet LOL
I find that Loctite is usually enough to keep those tiny gears in place if the set screw isn't strong enough. If you can get the shaft/grub screw clean and close to correct then the loctite will hold long enough to perfect the timing. Then you could go in with a dremel and put timing dimples in the shaft for the grub screw to grip.
If the shaft slips again I’ll try that, cheers! I used loctite but some other brand I'm suspicious of. The water pump locking up was the real killer
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES Yeah, you can't overcome hydrolock, no matter how hard you want to. I've used the loctite trick on a few small set screw locations on engines and other stuff. The loctite won't always hold forever, but it holds long enough to test before you make a permanent correction like grinding a flat or drilling a cross hole to pin things in place.
@@henrybangsberg2187 Thks Henry
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINESso why is the pump hydro locking? Mine did the same.
Hi Darren, missed this comment sorry. I think we need to make this an issue with the manufacturer. It is a bit of a killer. I will use a different pump if I have to. Been looking at your channel...respect, man. What you did with that big Holt model was AMAZING! Darren, d'y reckon us Kiwis and Aussies are more tolerant of Chinese hobby quality engineering because we just make do with a piece of wire, chewing gum and a dried seagull? :)
Wow, that thing sure is a fight and you seemed to give it one hell of a go, great try and thanks for sharing !!!!
Thanks, but I didn't actually get to run it in the video. I'm looking forward to it, though! The manufacturer noticed the video. I feel supported by him, and you guys

This was NOT bought from Stirlingkit or Enginediy and may not be under general release yet. I would recommend waiting until they have it
Thanks for taking the bullet on our behalf 😅 im sure you will get it going soon. But definetly a $1000+ nzd engine
I'm such a martyr...but thx for your support! I was feeling hard done by then was at the hardware store and noticed basic wheelbarrows are NZ$270-350. (a) considering the airfreight of this big lump, $1100 not looking so bad and (b) no wonder our houses are so f***ng expensive
@ThomasPCGuruENGINES yeah , everything reaches here turns out quite expensive . But I look forward to make it run or perhaps get your money back if it's too much of a hassle. Making a true diesel engine is harder than it seems in general
ABSOLUTELY what a challenge :)
Chinese copy engines illegally without having any clue That's why 90% of them arrive knackered. And their prices keep going up..
SO 6 years ago. I'm thinking MUSA, OKMO, Cison...vastly improved
Massively exciting to say I'm expecting a beautiful LIVE STEAM MILL ENGINE KIT from #Stirlingkit and another hi quality surprise from them! PLUS of course I will continue with this diesel. I just also want to say how much I love you like-minded dudes (and dudettes!) as a community, Flick us a hello comment!
Just turn the shaft
Turn of the screw? I'd be shafted
How did you tighten the spark plug. The space around mine was too small for a socket. Thanks in advance.
Try a smaller socket set, I mean, a set, of...smaller sockets. Also ask enginediy or stirlingkit they sell 'em
Hello Thomas, hope you are well sir, Quick question please. Would you happen to know if there is actually a new hit and miss coming out. It is supposedly by Retol, VM 01, vertical model, Thank you, Jerry
"Soon" they tell me at Stirlingkit. I'll get it
What is an I ngin ?
Opposite of a C wboy. of course. My kid knowledge shining through here
For goodness sake stop waving the syringe loaded with needle ...otherwise enjoyable and informative video.
Yeah I even distract myself when I watch that, it's not a good look....
Do enthusiasts start their engines every day? How do they wear out? They are all so very boss.
Nope, not every day. I have kids and still work I guess semi-retired. Kids are teens. Engines like these...the hit and miss last ages but I wouldn't run the harder-to-disassemble ones daily like Holt or harley models. Newer models are much better made
I bought a 173F diesel engine from Alibaba. The batstards put it in sn empty cardboard box with no packing materials at all. Box was just wrapped in packing tape. Naturally it arrived damaged. It was sent via ship so took months to get here. Was ofcourse damaged fairly badly. Seller took no responsibility and blamed freight company. Never again. By the way. Shipping to NZ usually costs more than the engine in most cases
.. that's brutal. I'm sorry about your engine, ...yeah I don't know about it, not sure yet. but thanks for the heads-up
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES I was thinking of importing them to sell. But that kind of put me off. The place I got it off had one of the cheaper options for shipping. I've seen other people unboxing these kind of engines and they arrive in a wooden crate/box. The company name was Hebei Tengka. So probly best to avoid them if you're looking to buy. I managed to fix it up in the end but had to buy a replacement pull start assembly. And the injector wasn't very good so replaced that too. Smokes a bit for some reason. May need to run a load to bed in the rings. Not too sure. But my spine is causing too much grief to be bothered trying to get it running an inverter generator as was the plan. There's a guy that has a channel Robot Cantina and he's done a few setup and experiment videos of that engine you're interested in. Have you seen his channel?
I have, I like. It seems there are just a few really successful channels and we all know them...anyway, undecided here...
Is it just me or is the shelf even with top of his head look saggy like curved from weight of all the metal models
Yeah...pls remind me constantly, I need a new shelf
We're here for the model engines and not your demented ability to create morbid or perverted cartoon characters
Nice use of language there, my friend. Of course, my channel partner does the demented and perverted stuff, I only do the technical stuff. Of course, I don't look at the boobies...if there are any...:) You guys are very patient with me
GOOD ,Thanks Jin
Hey Jin, hi, nice progress with #OKMOMODELS
I've been pining for the 3.6CC Retrol diesel myself. That engine looks like a hoot. I did just pick up a nice Stuart D10 w reversing gear out of Scotland. Now, if the mailman would just put his back into it...
That D10 is a fine engine - great choice - enjoy it! www.stirlingkit.com/blogs/news/vm-01-vs-hm-01-vertical-or-horizontal-which-engine-style-suits-you-best-stirlingkit for VM-01
Just after I canceled my order I was informed that they had one in their hands so I gave them my money again and it turned up in the mail about 6 days later. It required a good looking over before I did anything. A few bolts loose, grub screws missing, injector was loose, all water side fittings were loose and the diesel tank had swarf in it! It is fitted with heavy valve springs and I had trouble with the gearing slipping and loosing timing. Luckily the valves don’t clash with the piston. Grub screws would score the shaft and make it hard to dismantle. I’ve added a few steel collars now to beef that side of things up, haven’t had any more slippage for the last few days. The governor is not perfect and the engine wants to race away at times, I’ve made a different wedge now and have better control and have managed to slow the engine down a bit but still requires refinement. I added a decompression leaver yesterday but haven’t tried it out yet, I’m hoping I can hand crank start it, I think all these engines should be coming out with one fitted, it will assist in starting and stopping the engine when it wants to run away! An extra spring on the governor is next to be able to vary the speed. If you are after a ready to run, out of the box diesel I think a lot of people will be disappointed because so far I’ve spent all my time fixing all these little things just to make it run and not everyone has a lathe and milling machine in their back shed so they can make their own parts. Oh, and I cut a key way into the flywheel as well..before I even attempted to start it, a flywheel that size needs something more positive than just a nut done up tight to stop it from slipping. And the engine makes a MESS of your workshop with all that unburnt fuel getting sprayed around. The injector pump is 4mm dia, way too big for the engine. I think I’ve got a bit more patience than some and don’t mind the problem solving and machining up little parts to get the engine running, I’ve actually enjoyed the last week of tinkering and frustrations but I’m sure the way these engines are at the moment there will be a few disappointed buyers out there. Maybe that is why sales have been delayed…the slipping of the gearing needs to be addressed at the factory and the governing of the pump needs work… But it is a true diesel, fuel straight from the bowser and that is a first for mass produced miniature diesels. I’ve ran out of time before I need to fly back to work so I don’t think I’ll be able to make a video for a few weeks…we’ll see how I go.
Bloody hell Darren, I am green with envy FFS, will the gear to the long sideshaft hold up to those strong valve springs? Really interesting post from you my friend and do keep me informed. Many thanks
