  • Let's un-box the new R18 Benz engine from Microcosm. We will look at its features and design as well as attempting to start and run it for the first time.
    This engine has a very interesting design and is patterned after the engine that powered 1886 Karl Benz Motorwagen, commonly referred to as the first motor car. I hope you enjoy the video, Thank you all for watching, commenting, sharing and for subscribing. You guy's ARE great!

    I don't have a clue why this popped up in my feed but I'm glad it did. Very satisfying to watch and I can't quite imagine why but thank you for your time.

    The R18 looks like another little work of art. Keep plenty of oil on the slide valve and make sure that no dirt gets in there because it is a pain to lap them back in. I'm hoping to get my hands on one soon.

      Hi Henry, I have noticed that it let's you know when it needs oiled because the mixture will start to lean out. I can't wait to see your video when you get yours 👍

    - I’m so glad you bought an R18, Steam!
    What a beautiful little machine!
    I have seen the machinist-made Benz Motorwagen engines over the years, and when I saw Jin had made one, I was really excited… only a matter of time before I will have one of my own… I just love it!
    Might be my favorite review you’ve done yet. Applause!!
    Still hope you pick up and review one of Jin’s V twin engines in the future. I have the R29 Knucklehead, and you’d love it.
    love

    Nice video Matt ! That pull and run made up for some of the other problem childs that most people are going to experience at one time or another. They're just finicky lil turds and sometimes a fella just needs to crack a cold one and ponder for a minute. Important thing is though you provide a basis to start a troubleshooting process. Its always always one or both of 2 different scenarios. Fuel and spark, enough of both at the right time along with respectable seal or compression. Over time you begin to sense what direction is the most rewarding payoff.
    Each design obviously adds some intriguing elements..
    Appreciate your time..

    10:04 My M-17b loves to be nearly completely choked off to hand start, but on zippo fuel, I can usually get it to go in a half dozen flicks. Bet this one is the same way.

    Nice model, I’ve seen the full size thing, the whole cad shakes, I wonder whether the massive flywheel causes some weird gyroscopic issues!

    • @steam212
      @steam212  10 місяців тому +1

      Until you said that, I never once gave any thought to the gyroscopic effects of a flywheel that size running 90° to the drive wheels. WOW, thank you for the thought and the curiosity that it sparked. Now I need to know more.

  • @TestECull

    10:56 That valve is going to be a nightmare to get right on the production floor. This thing'll probably want a lot of oil in the fuel to seal it, more than your usual brew has.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Рік тому +1

      Hi C6, I have been oiling it externally and it seems to be doing ok so far, but I just read a comment suggesting that we try steam oil. I think that would seal and lubricate for much longer than the 30 weight oil. We will definitely keep trying and figure out what combination works the best. Thank you for your comment and thanks again for watching 👍👍

      Hi Gary, their way of thinking in 1885 was and still is fascinating to this day. The use of a slide valve instead of a conventional valve and seat (like the exhaust) is what I find the most amusing. Thanks again for watching and commenting Gary, you guy's are GREAT 👍

  • @TestECull
    @TestECull Рік тому +2

    6:57 HAve you ever put zippo fuel through any of your microcosm engines? That stuff is about the only thing my M-17b runs worth a damn on. Seems to absolutely love the stuff and will putt away quite literally until the tank is dry on it.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Рік тому +1

      I have ran a couple of engines on lighter fluid and marvel mystery oil before, it does seem to work really well but the exhaust gives me a headache for some reason. I'm sure it would be no problem with the doors open but this time of year it's too cold for that.

    • @TestECull
      @TestECull Рік тому

      @@steam212 probably the MMO. That stuff gives me a headache on its own and I hate it for that reason. I use sae30w motor oil instead. Three squirts from a pump type oil can in the little metal fuel can and shake vigorously.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Рік тому

      Hi Nick, the 6cc Enjomor is a good little engine to start and learn with. It is big enough to get a good view of how it works and still small enough to enjoy on a shelf. If you have time to look through some of my other videos I took a new one and modified it, I showed the steps along the way. If you were to order one from Stirlingkit.com and used discount code steam212 I can save you 10% on anything from their site. Thank you for your interest in the hobby, watching and commenting 👍

    Hey Matt, I just got this engine and it seems like it has very low compression. I also notice the slide valve has a leak even with a oil seal on it you can hear it hiss and bubble out the side of it. The longest I've gotten it to run was about 20 seconds. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @steam212
      @steam212  9 місяців тому

      Is it stalling due to starving for fuel or over fueling (do you need to choke it with your finger to restart it?)

    • @Kevin_Dyke
      @Kevin_Dyke 9 місяців тому

      @steam212 Not usually, I choke it once when first starting. I think it's just a tinkering with the mixture that is still some of the problem. Bit it pops pretty much every time I drill start it.

    • @steam212
      @steam212  9 місяців тому

      @@Kevin_Dyke I know the one I have was very sensitive to any adjustment on the carburetor. But after figuring out where the throttle was the happiest the mixture adjustment was much easier

    • @Kevin_Dyke
      @Kevin_Dyke 9 місяців тому

      @steam212 I ended up getting it going. I found out the spark plug gap was too small, so the plug was fouling out alot and getting flooded. I got the carb mixer settings perfect now, and it runs great now. Can't wait for your next video!
