This version of the song, which appeared on Linda 's 1975 album (and not released as a single), was the template for the Foster/Houston collaboration. Whitney heard Dolly's version and didn't like the song, she said she didn't know what to do with that country song. David Foster who was not familiar with the song went into Long Beach to get a copy. The record store did not have Dolly's recording, but did have Ronstadt's album Prisoner In Disguise. Foster said as soon as he heard Ronstadt's recording, he knew what they could do with the song. I am not a musician, but my friends that are, say the arrangement was the same taken directly from this recording, they just played with the melody line. When Dolly heard that Foster/Houston were using the Linda's recording as a template for theirs, she called David to give him the final verse, which Linda did not included. Foster had to add another 45 seconds to the arrangement. Another note is the Dolly wrote the song as a ode to mentor farewell for Porter Wagner (when leaving his show). That is the different of intent of the songs. In the Bodyguard the song was used as a song about romantic love. Ronstadt's version is bluesy and she hangs on the world "always" as opposed to Dolly or Whitney who hang on the world "I'.

Linda did this song many years before Whitney Houston and I would lay money on the theory that WH listened to this version and was heavily influenced by it in the way she sang it. This is my favorite version, as I think she has the most beautiful voice on the planet. I disagree that she doesn’t make it her own. But, in any case, it’s nice to see someone react to it. 🌺✌️

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. She has had so many hits such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc. Ronstadt also did two great duets, "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) & "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). The Eagles were her backing band till they went out on their own & she has covered a lot of their songs.

Elvis wanted this song but his agents wanted Dolly to give in it's rights too and she declined since it had been a #1 hit for her and knew it's worth. She gave it to Linda but she didn't release it as a single, and Dolly had success with it once again in the 80's and later by Withney Houston.

This was included on her 1975 album "Prisoner in Disguise".
Dolly Parton and she were close friends even at that point, Dolly had not broken through to the mainstream yet and to have her work covered by someone as influential as Linda was at this point was a big help to her moving in a more populist direction, in the liner notes on the original album there is a a note Dolly wrote to her thanking her for recording the song.
This is the version that Kevin Costner suggested to Whitney Houston when they were looking for a song for "The Bodyguard" and served as something of a template for her take on it. Linda's rendition is somewhat of a blend of Dolly's and Whitney's and beautifully performed.

Costner actually brought her Dolly's recording. Robin Crawford Whitney's BF set the record straight about who brought her Ronstadt's recording; in the open letter she wrote after Whitney has passed. Also, Foster told the story of how he went into Long Beach to get Dolly's record by the record store only had Ronstadt's album with her recording on it.

First of all do not compare these artist! They are incredibly unique! Was Houston or Parton able to be as Vera as Ms Linda? The answer is no. Please do research
