Abridged entire purpose is to be humorous, so taking off points from it because it lacks the same intensity or sentimental value as the original kinda didn't make sense to me too.
definitely should've compared scenes that were taken seriously in dbza 😅 edit: to people who think you can compare whatever to whatever, you are correct. you can compare them as entertainment options. However in that competition, people aim for the same goal, allowing for critique on their ability to do so, which would be interesting to hear. When you compare things that aren't trying to do the same thing, you are basing it solely on what you already decided they were competing for, and that isn't interesting. Literally look at the scores in the video, they ended up nearly exactly flip flopped because one liked the original/kai runs more, and one liked abridged more. It makes the video uninteresting. (No, I didn't end up watching it in full, I skipped around to comparable scenes because I noticed the pattern after a few minutes. @@takamiya2194 But then it becomes emotional when Krillin dies and Goku turns into a Super Saiyan, when 16 dies they make the Gohan scream emotional, when Future Trunks finds Future Gohan dead it's emotional, when Goku says goodbye to Gohan it's emotional, Goku's training with Gohan on the Hyperbolic Time Chamber is wholesome, therefore emotional. I don't even know why you bothered to make this comparison at all considering abridged is a condensed version specifically designed to be funny and not remotely serious. And yet it's still more accurate to the original japanese a lot of the time.
Seriously it's a parody they're supposed to not be serious. He needs to stop and think. hmmmmm what does parody mean? But no he doesn't he just 1 to 1 compared the parody to the actual show
Being a parody does not invalidate the artistic credit of DBZA. And what does it matter that it's being measured up against the original? Should fanfiction not be compared to its source material? Should parodies not? Y'all seem mad just to be mad
i slightly prefer the abridged version during the first beam struggle. the reason is because, if you watch The Worlds Strongest, they have him do a "Kaio Ken times Three and a half". so it creates this anticipation for when he actually unleashes the x4. it's great payoff
@ Ngl the Z movies with the exception of Movies 9 & 13 always have some inconsistency with Z that make em impossible in the timeline, they’re more retellings of sagas or fights instead of having a plausible placement in a timeline (In my opinion, at least)
@ I dunno, felt way more like a joke relating to the scene just being the Kamehameha vs Galick Gun but with Wheelo instead of Vegeta I don’t think TFS really intended to connect Abridged with the movies to that extent, else they’d reference the films in the main series more that just… DBZA episode 31 with Dead Zone (technically)
SS2 scene took pretty much direct inspiration from the Japanese version including a remake of the song in English. Huge homage, but also because it's newer the sound quality is great. The internal Monologue from DBZ made it a lot worse imo. Tbh it was clear he was in complete shock by the look on his face. No words needed.
Here’s the plain truth. The original series will always be the greatest, because of how much it impacted us all. All in all…. Abridged did it better. They were able to keep the emotional moments that needed to be kept, while entertaining us FAR beyond what the original series did. Abridged was also able to fully explain the full story effectively in 60 episodes. Particularly the Android & Cell saga, the voice acting in Abridged was quite literally better than the original. Side note: Comparing an Abridged series that was purposely made to be a comedic version of a show with the original version of said show, only to penalize the Abridged version for being comedic is an extraordinarily flawed and biased experiment.
While i Don’t agree in The sense that i prefer dbz, i do also think that this is unfair cuz from a storytelling perspective the original series always is better than a parody that doesn’t take itself seriously a Lot of the time and removes multiple storybeats
Ever since Nappa was introduced abridged was just simply peak. also Piccolo hesitant? Piccolo was planning to kill them both all along. and he never did give a signal in the none dubbed version. You seem to forget that Piccolo and Goku were arch nemesis at the time. Piccolo did not know about the other Sayings until later, and actually assumed until Raditz told him otherwise that the fight was over. Goku would be revived and they would fight again for the world.
I feel like it’s a bit silly for knocking off a comedic parody for being comedic but at the same time I think it’s silly people trying to act like the comedic parody is better than the manga and Kai.
Abridged wins for me just for fact that android 19 voice is better and the added humor touch perfects scene. Normal kai version Android 19 voice sounds worse then cat claws on a chalkboard. Kai makes it to soap opera Abridged makes a adult swim enjoyable cartoon. Kai way to serious and frustrating Abridged is relaxing and enjoyable.
@@KeyReviewsOfficialI think what would have made more sense was for you to pick Z OR Kai to compare DBZA against. There’s no real consistency to what equates to cherry picking between Z/Kai, especially when it comes to characters with different VAs between the two dubs. The inherent biases really diminish this video, especially not really touching on things that make DBZA such a beloved parody.
What I noticed about team four star, I remember thinking they weren’t as funny when they got to the android arc in high school. But as I got older and rewatch the series. I noticed they were trying to somewhat make an official series by adding more awareness to the plot holes or being more accurate of what should’ve happened in the original series instead of joking all the time. It felt like they were trying to make improvements more, rather than be a funny parody show anymore. So when I realize that, I actually appreciated the abridged more! They took away jokes like muffin button away completely, and didn’t even bring them back for one episode after a certain point, they moved on past it. 🎉
I still prefer Vegeta’s voice actor in TeamFourStar than Chris. I’m proud to say that. The moment Vegeta is in the water after getting punched by trunks, realizing his blood on his hand and yells rage! I feel like the team four star voice actor nailed a lot of good moments like that.
I think even Sabat himself once said in the past that he would consider having Lanipator be his successor as Vegeta if anything were to happen to him. Gotta respect Chris, he is at least a bit more likeable than egotistical Schemmel.
25:33 It's the same song, it's just DBZK uses an English Version while Abridged uses the Japanese one, infamous for "Tokusentai! Tokusentai! TOKUSENTAI!" literally translating to "Special Squadron! Special Squadron! SPECIAL SQUADRON!" Which I personally enjoy more than the "Ginyu Force is Cool" used in the English Dub of Kai. 1:10:47 If Tamashi vs Tamashi was used behind the original dub, I'd give it the point just for the yell. Also I'd argue SSJ3 is slightly more iconic than Gohan's SSJ2, considering it's why the running joke of "screaming for half an hour to get stronger" primarily stems from, alongside the fusion reborn version. 1:14:40 Another thing in favor of Abridged that once brought up may even retroactively change which you prefer, but the goofy nature of Goku and how his goofiness shines through in every other serious scene in the series elevates this even further. Goku is his normal self in Z, only putting his desire to fight when he knows if he doesn't everyone dies, however in Abridged, this moment is a baseball bat to the gut because it comes out of freaking nowhere for Goku. Not so much that it feels out of place, but just enough to show he realizes his mistakes and finally for once in his life acts like an adult to save his son. It hits so much harder than in the original because of this and I'm pretty sure every time I was the 3 Parts of Episode 70 this scene always brings me to tears. 1:20:49 *In TFS Perfect Cell's Voice because funny* Wait a fucking second... Those numbers don't line up. How do you have 30 points total and the friend have 29?? WHAT THE HELL IS THE POINT?!?!
Abridged brought a generation who got into DBZ, but Abridged, whether they do things better or not, is too self-aware to be taken seriously in my opinion. Even though i go back and watch Broly Abridged a lot. It’s too damn funny.😂 For me even though it’s chaotic, but i watched Ocean dub Saiyan-Namek and then OG Funimation all the way through. Old heads! Where y’all at!? Sidenote: I like the enthusiasm of your videos. Not enough people who cover this stuff has positive vibes. haha Keep it up brotha!🐉
Abridged definitely gives more Early Dragon Ball vibes with the comedic focus lol, albeit way more referencial to other media and in more of an “”””adult”””” tone Also, thank god you didn’t include the “too soon” joke on the second clip
I actually grew up watching abridged. I started watching it late season 1 and always loved the show. Most of my experience with normal dbz was from the games, so I'm very biased.
@ I’m not saying dbz doesn’t have comedy. I’m saying that some scenes like goku letting Frieza power up bc he was gonna give him pizza(with stuff crus) or when goku first death with the special beam canon had made the tone to be more lighter and with some comedy behind it unlike the original
@snintendog bro what. Dbz did an amazing job at making the emotional moments emotional while also giving actual depth and story to the characters portrayed. But dragon ball z abridged just absuletley butchered the characters and turned all the moments that would normally be serious to overly comedic.
I admitted several scenes were funny to me, and I actually like the abridged series, but to me, it's obviously not better. I mostly didn't want to make this video, but I had a lot of people asking for it, so I decided to do it as just a fun video. But also this video could just be used to see a side by side comparison for the dbz and abridged if you skip my commentary so 🤷♂️
If I had to put it a way it would be this, Season 1 of abridged had funny jokes and stuff but it felt more like UA-cam poops, just jokes not real feeling or writing just funny well written jokes, but then the namek arc and forward tfs nails it so good freaza feels real Evil while being funny, jokes in combat, almost gave it realism, then in season 3 tfs flies with story telling, jokes, emotion, this makes you really like these characters.
The biggest reason I dislike Kai's version of the Kaioken x20 scene is that whole heroic speech about Chichi, Gohan, and the future of Namek at the beginning. I think my favorite version of this scene by far is the manga. He's standing there getting his butt handed to him by Freeza while using the x10 Kaio-ken and wonders if his body could even handle a x20. He's just kinda like, "Well, if I don't then I die. If I do, I might die. And if I do and he's not lying about only using half of his power, we're all dead anyway," before launching the attack and it failing. I love how it's just this desperate, "Please let him be bluffing this time."
in your final flash scene you of the original DBZ with falconers track you still had cell screaming "Oh Shit" instead of "Whats this" best version of that scene by far
Schemmel was a hypocrite too by saying that TFS was disrespecting the original source material until the 2019 Funimation audio leaks came out with him and the other cast going off with homophobic and NSFW jokes through their voices lol.
i enjoyed this vid alot but just a suggestion, it seems a little unfair to put both dbz and dbz kai against dbza, as well as picking either a moment from z or kai against abridged because where one official version may fail the other version could have an edge against the one abridged version
That's fair. I did want to include the winners for some scenes from my dbz vs kai videos, so that's why I did it that way, but I can see what you're saying.
Yeah, and also, some people consider Kai to be different enough to be separate from the normal dbz, and consider dbs to continue from Kai while the normal dbz is followed by GT, and that's why GT stopped being canon to some
Abridged is just plain out funny and og Z is more serious and has more set out story. So if you like comedy take abridged if you like serious anime then lean towards Z/kai
The thing about in abridged is that if you only watched DBZ, I can see how it would be funny and seem better especially during the saiyan saga. Now if you watched DB, then seeing characters like Yamcha and Tien getting wrecked was like, oh shit. They weren't playing when Radditz said they were stronger than him. That power level jump was no joke back then.
About 15 minutes in and what I can see so far is that being a DBZ fan without seeing The Abridged version may leave you to attached to moments in the original series to really appreciate how good the Abridged version is. That being said I can understand your points narratively speaking. However I feel the entire analysis kind of throws out that this is an Abridged show and meant to be completely ridiculous. It feels like both are being judged by the same standard when they really shouldn't be. Yes they're the same Source material but the end result is very different. In a video like this you have to judge these scenes not on which series did them better necessarily but compare them based off of their own Merit for example Dragon Ball Z the original series is so serious that trying to take plot points and judge them from a bridge is kind of difficult. Abridged should really just be judged on whether it was done well and stayed faithful to the original story while keeping the story funny and honestly seeing if it aged well, which in my opinion both aged very well.
I'm judging the scenes on which one i liked better while giving you my reasons. For me the saiyan saga and some of the frieza saga aren't really that good to me but like I said in the video the cell saga is where the abridged series starts to get really good and that's where abridged got a lot of points from me
I think you are both pretty biased, there are scenes in this where z is better and your friend likes abridged more, and scenes where abridged is better and you like kai or z more. I also wish you adressed some of the less iconic scenes that tfs made better; such as krillin sparing 18, vegeta's death to frieza (and really most of frieza vs the namek team), or gero's death.
It makes no sense to compare a series to it's parody, especially if you're just going to side with the main series almost every time simply for NOT being goofy, like what is the point of this?
regarding the ginyu force intro... its LITERALLY the same song. in fact, the Abridged version uses the version from the actual japanese OST, while kai redubbed the vocals of the song. abridged just uses a shorter clip of the song
What a bewildering comparison. I don't really like Abridged at this point but I think it's pretty unfair to compare a goofy stupid parody that sometimes moves the plot forward to the actual show. Especially given early TFS' much more limited editing, mic quality and VA experience and you're comparing it to KAI, let alone old Z.
I was gonna go through and state different points in the video and just say some quick little quote about them. But to sum up this entire video: “Well no shit Sherlock it’s supposed to be funny” Also this guy has some very good reasons for liking the original more, many of which I agree. I suppose I’m more biased towards abridged because I’ve watched it more than the original due to it being so easy to access.
I have to say, the Abridged version gives the Super Saiyan transformation a greater sense of gravity. Goku, usually a dim-witted character, is depicted with a serious intensity during the scene, and that contrast really makes the moment.
I’d say season 1 of abridged is pretty rough, I loved the jokes as a kid but they may not land on someone who’s an adult. There is definitely pay off to some of the jokes later on but there’s no doubt Kai is the better experience for the Sayain Saga. I’d say Namek saga is pretty neck and neck, I love the frieza fight in the abridged, especially frieza vs. Goku, they wrote them to work off eachother so well. Now after watching S3 again of abridged I’d say I 100% prefer watching it abridged Vs. Kai. The amount of jokes that are packed in and the emotional pay off at the end of the Cell games is one hell of a ride. Also android 16 is Goated, so hilarious. this is a fun topic to explore though for sure
At 23:28 you said DBZA used a different song but in actuality it's the exact same song, look it up. The only difference is DBZA actually used the original Japanese lyrics to the song while Kai removed all lyrics and added in "Ginyu Force rules" instead of "Tokusentai". If anything, I find the DBZA version to be more faithful than the Kai dub
I've enjoyed these comparison videos. I'm also a big fan of the original DBZ, but felt some of the comparison choices were strange. Comparing the weight of the original storyline to a parody favored the original heavily. I also feel you missed the opportunity show where DBZA added a lot of character, dialog, and exposition where the original did not. They added to 16's backstory, and had a lot of epic one liners from Piccolo, the cyborgs, and cell. "What's a Kami? It mean god... Now bow" and "Does Gohan know you let him die?"
@TreFKennedy it doesn't help how dishonestly he keeps switching audio in the original dub to empathise a point to no avail. It just dishonest. Other better newer dragonball youtubers out there are a lot more honest than this one.
@@kylerayner9167 What usual bias? For the DBZ side, I used the winners from my previous comparisons for many of the scenes to go up against the Abridged ones. As for the title, it’s just reflecting what the video is-comparing the official DBZ/Kai scenes to Abridged.
Paused at the intro, really hoping for Android 16 and Cell dialogue, as well as Vegeta’s final flash vs cell, and pretty much all of Tien. A nice bonus would be the DBS scene they did with Trunks vs merged/degraded Zamasu
Setting aside the blatant cherry picking and unfair representation, cutting off parts of abridged, making the moment look way less funny or impactful. Two big examples from what i've seen is Krillin's "...YEAH! ...WOO!" at Yamcha's fail, and the *ENTIRE SECOND HALF OF POINT 11!!!* "-oh... i'm sorry, i'm usually far more composed. I'm just a little bit *absolutely livid."* Emotions aside, i ranked up to what i watched 1. Abridged 2. OG 3. OG 4. Abridged ...i can't help but notice you left out piccolo's death????? 5. Abridged 6. Abridged 7. Abridged 8. OG 9. Abridged 10. Abridged 11. Abridged I stopped watching because of editing, and cuz it took you 9 entire segments to give any ground to abridged, especially the Chiaotzu one. Of all the ones to be humble, at least give it this one, like you have the same seriousness and tone in Tien, and chiaotzu's part was executed with perfect timing.
Ok, I know you're a dragon ball channel primarily. But can you please do more of these abridged vs Original series Videos? Especially Sao Abridged vs Sword Art Online. I'm really curious how you'd compare and contrast the two like you did with dbza and dbz
I'm just gonna say it. Your friend is everything wrong with DBZA fans. They want DBZA to be the canon version because 'haha, running gags' and 'omg Piccolo's such a better dad!'
Good Video. If you ever think of remaking this or fixing some mistakes please do future gohans death and future trunks reaction to finding him i feel like both could be close in comparison.
Dude, why is the music so loud when you are talking and explaining your decisions? Also it feels like you are very biased against dbza where the point of dbza feels to me like a play on the original we all love with humor that normally would not be there. The point is not to make the scenes more impactful but to make the scenes just an enjoyable in a different way.

The fact the Parody is more loyal to Toriyamas work ALONE should wave red flags.
The special remix TFS made exclusively for the Final Flash is amazing

i slightly prefer the abridged version during the first beam struggle. the reason is because, if you watch The Worlds Strongest, they have him do a "Kaio Ken times Three and a half". so it creates this anticipation for when he actually unleashes the x4. it's great payoff
Wasn’t World’s Strongest (the abridged one) done years after?
@@evilchild1851 it was. but it evidently takes place chronologically before the Saiyan Invasion
@ Ngl the Z movies with the exception of Movies 9 & 13 always have some inconsistency with Z that make em impossible in the timeline, they’re more retellings of sagas or fights instead of having a plausible placement in a timeline (In my opinion, at least)
@@evilchild1851 my only point was that the Kaio Ken time 3.5 was intentional. to place it chronologically before the Saiyan invasion
@ I dunno, felt way more like a joke relating to the scene just being the Kamehameha vs Galick Gun but with Wheelo instead of Vegeta
I don’t think TFS really intended to connect Abridged with the movies to that extent, else they’d reference the films in the main series more that just… DBZA episode 31 with Dead Zone (technically)
Bro didn't credit GT in the intro...
Dang I forgot GT 😂
I genuinely believe Android and beyond Abridged are legit better than the OG series.
Freeza Saga dbza >
Absolutely not.
hell no
@@TheIrishRushin You for sure haven't even watched it. It's better for the fact that they have the benefit of hindsight
@@toasterowens8916 no it's absolutely not.
Gotta come in here and say my piece: I think Lani's "Galick Gun, FIRE!" is my favorite delivery of that attack, period.
Yea, a parody is "better" than the original. C'mon now guy 🙃

Is a much better way for Goku vs Vegeta’s first fight to end.
Goku would be revived and they would fight again for the world.
i mostly prefer the original/Z but the recoome fight was better in the abridged, the wrestling style commentary was perfect.
i love dbza but oh my god i will NEVER forgive tfs for the generational damage they’ve caused the entire db fanbase😭😭
I feel like it’s a bit silly for knocking off a comedic parody for being comedic but at the same time I think it’s silly people trying to act like the comedic parody is better than the manga and Kai.
Like comparisons like this only work against old Z Dubs
Breaking news: Abridged is a humorous twist of a action anime and isn’t as dramatic or serious as the real dragon ball z 😮😮😮

This white boy just loves his kai doesn't he? Although I'm visibly salty over the choices, his friend calmed the nerves with his superior taste.
😂 abridged is good but not better than z/kai
So when I realize that,
I actually appreciated the abridged more!
They took away jokes like muffin button away completely, and didn’t even bring them back for one episode after a certain point, they moved on past it. 🎉
Please do not take this the wrong way but when you popped up in the beginning my first thought was,
Hey look it's, totally not mark abridged.

Nah abridged made it more funny, but also made it more weird
To be fair, the song that plays when the ginyu force arrives is the same in kai as it is in the abridged. TFS just used the Japanese language version
“With additional comedy”is probably the best way to describe abridged.
Given Toriyamas original vision of a serious comedy.... sorry but TOEI butchered DBZ and DBZA Salvaged what they did.

@@KeyReviewsOfficialI agree, abridged is for the humor, if you want everything else watch DBZ or Kai
@@KeyReviewsOfficialbut perfect cell in abridged was perfect
Totally not biased.
If I had to put it a way it would be this,
Season 1 of abridged had funny jokes and stuff but it felt more like UA-cam poops, just jokes not real feeling or writing just funny well written jokes, but then the namek arc and forward tfs nails it so good freaza feels real Evil while being funny, jokes in combat, almost gave it realism, then in season 3 tfs flies with story telling, jokes, emotion, this makes you really like these characters.
Sean disliked this video. 😂
Yeah, and also, some people consider Kai to be different enough to be separate from the normal dbz, and consider dbs to continue from Kai while the normal dbz is followed by GT, and that's why GT stopped being canon to some
Both are Good
Do you know if you'll go over the z movies as well as buu for comparing as well?
Abridged is just plain out funny and og Z is more serious and has more set out story. So if you like comedy take abridged if you like serious anime then lean towards Z/kai

Ngl… a lot of this is DBZ Kai glazing…
How
This shit sounds like it was Written by and ai
For me the saiyan saga and some of the frieza saga aren't really that good to me but like I said in the video the cell saga is where the abridged series starts to get really good and that's where abridged got a lot of points from me
@KeyReviewsOfficial that's fair still watched all the way through, thought it was a pretty good video
If you’ve never seen abridged you have to watch it.. it’s fantastic
I never would expect him to do the Dragon Ball Abridged opening
Lol I just wanted to include it in this video
I was hoping you'd compare Cell's introduction between the 2. Abridged gives cell a very sinister entrance, compared to Z.
TFS shouldn't be compared because it's made for the sake of comedy, even when they get serious
they're not trying to replace the original dub
I was gonna go through and state different points in the video and just say some quick little quote about them.
But to sum up this entire video:
“Well no shit Sherlock it’s supposed to be funny”
Also this guy has some very good reasons for liking the original more, many of which I agree.
I honestly prefer most of the Abridged voices to the Original voices.
TFS made Goku what Toryama wanted Goku to be
I've enjoyed these comparison videos.
Honestly, you’re comparing apples to oranges here, abridged underplays all pivotal moments because that’s what and abridged show will do.

@@kylerayner9167 What usual bias? For the DBZ side, I used the winners from my previous comparisons for many of the scenes to go up against the Abridged ones. As for the title, it’s just reflecting what the video is-comparing the official DBZ/Kai scenes to Abridged.
