You can even see the respect in Nikki's eyes as Conan tells these interesting stories from his life.
After his split from The Tonight Show, I saw him on the traveling tour that he did. Never have I ever laughed as hard as I did during that show. To the point that it was starting to hurt from laughing so much!
In 1900 St. Louis was the 4th largest city in the US.. which explains why we hosted the 1904 World's Fair (and Summer Olympics!) Forest Park was created after the WF left town.. and contains one of the best (FREE) zoos in America, one of the best (FREE) art museums, the oldest outdoor amphitheater west of the Mississippi and other cool areas. You should definitely check that out if you come back
There’s actually a chart showing population of St. Louis by year at the history museum and population peaked in the early-mid 1900’s and has been steadily declining since. So you’ve got a city with fantastic historical architecture, all the great “old city attractions” like museums and zoos (all free!), and way more open freeway than people to drive on it. As someone who moved to a growing city with more people than resources and infrastructure, I sincerely miss that aspect of St. Louis.
I love how Nikki becomes the interviewer and takes easily to asking questions that draw out interesting answers from Conan. Funny the smooth way she and Conan switch roles and just continue without any interruption in the flow.
@@jd42305 While I agree, I think her brand of humor would be too abrasive for what most execs are looking for in a late night host. Also conservatives would probably review bomb the hell out of her show. All of this being said it could probably work on netflix.
The Gateway Arch conversation reminds me of a family story. My mother's eldest sibling lived just across the IL/MO border in Collinsville, IL, and on one trip to visit her sister, circa 1986, my father and she decided to take the elevator to the top of the Arch, where they stood next to (wait for it) one Orenthal James Simpson. She was effusive about how nice he was to her and the other tourists. She went on for 10 minutes about how great OJ was.
St louis also has one of the top zoos in the country, we have Blueberry Hill where Chuck Berry (the creator of rock n roll) played, we have the national blues museum, we have Grant's Farm which is basically another zoo that's owned by Anheuser-Busch, we have Union Station which has lots to do, and admission to almost every attraction is free.
From what I remember it was affiliates complaining about tanking local news ratings that got Conan kicked off the Tonight Show. So yes, keeping the affiliates happy was kinda important!
I'm kinda glad he chose the line he did, because his work is elevated by the collaborative efforts, something you don't get to see as much in Stand up cuz it's all you on the stage, whereas Conan loves to bounce off of other people so well. He has that classic routine of the other person saying something rather mundane by itself, but taking it and turning it into something absurd and funny. His work with Schlansky are still some of the best comedy out there, and Clueless Gamer with Aaron was the best too, glad that's back now!
Pretty sure my dream is to spend the day with Conan and Nikki in my city of St. Louis - hitting up the city museum maybe but better yet the science center. Conan would have a blast there and the history museum! Magic House would be hilarious with him too 😂
Forest Park is way better than Laclede's Landing (the Arch). On top of the huge park, it has one of the best zoos in the US, an art museum and science center, all with free admission.
I remember when Conan visited Kare 11 here in Minneapolis. They had him on the morning show - which is really REALLY early - and one of the anchors, I think it was Kim Insley, was obviously star struck by Conan. He gave her a hug and she had a huge smile on her face. Anyway they fired her when she got too old.
You can go kayaking in an old glass mine just outside St. Louis. It's called Crystal City Underground. The City Museum is a giant playground for adults. It's a misleading name. The St. Louis Aquarium is ridiculously amazing. There's a restaurant outside St. Louis in St. Charles County where John Goodman took Bruce Willis to eat. It's a hibachi restaurant called Shogun. It's my favorite restaurant. The St. Louis Basilica is an amazingly beautiful church that is amazing to go to. The St. Louis Art Museum, the St. Louis Zoo, and Grant's Farm (General Grant) are must go to places. The zoo and the art museum are in the same park (Forest Park). Grant's Farm is similar to the zoo but you drive in a tram to the center of the property and then explore from there. The park is filled with antelope, bison, and other wild animals that the tram drives through without barriers. You can feed goats, watch a bird show, watch an elephant show, ride a camel, see the Clydesdale Farm, and see some very old civil war antiques throughout the Farm. There's also an incredibly awesome park called Lone Elk Park where you can drive through a park filled with elk and bison. There aren't any barriers. There are also picnic tables that you can eat at with also no barriers. Do not get close when they're in the rut (mating season). They get aggressive. Just outside Lone Elk Park is the Wild Bird Santuary that has birds from all over the world including a Kookaburra.
St. Louis is great, but I don’t think most visitors find the coolest stuff. Arch is the lame first grade field trip. Forest Park or City Museum are the best tourist parts, but the food is amazing too. Recommend Pappy’s Smokehouse or any of the amazing Italian restaurants on The Hill. Just load up on ribs at Pappys unless you don’t like ribs. Salt and Smoke is another great bbq, but their best dish is their brisket, which is unlike any brisket I’ve ever had. Wonderful fat. If you like fried chicken and don’t mind it being a little too salty, I was addicted to Lee’s gizzards. St. Louis has always had an interesting music scene that doesn’t quite make it nationally most of the time or they move to New York to get famous (Miles Davis). Just remembered there’s a great German butcher called “G&W”. Stock up on brats every time I visit. Getting drunk on a riverboat is always fun.
I've been in the arch on the elevator, once it reaches the apex, the whole elevator, shifts to compensate and then you crap yourself...I rode the second largest wooden roller coaster in North America at knotsberry farm, people like riding in the end car because the back wheels actually leave the track, that arch scared me more
I don't think I've ever watched a clip of Conan where I didn't literally laugh out loud. Even moreso when he's just making it up 'off the cuff' as in this clip, and his podcast, generally. Maybe he's just got my particular funny bone on lock, but my opinion there's no one else near his level of comedy today.
Forest Park is great, can actually drive thru it for all those who are too scared to enjoy the city on foot. I would also add Tower Grove Park, and just Tower Grove, The Hill neighborhood, Crown Candy, the church made into a skate park, Coffee Cartel is cool. Downtown St Louis is great too. Old Rock House, Broadway Oyster House, Cherokee Street, the Loop is good but has gotten a bit too commercial for me tho. Union Station is amazing and it just put in a huge aquarium and observation wheel. Grand Avenue is great too, there is so many nice little breweries and river towns around the city on the outskirts. Great town worth a visit, best to consult the locals who aren't afraid to venture off the beaten path sometimes, ie the arch, the arch, or the arch. The Delmar divide is real, and a trip. I used to do delivery on Delmar so I've seen both sides. Good Live music scene there for original music, as I've played many venues around town. Shout out to Pop's Blue Moon bar, where I got my start an cut mah teeth
I really enjoyed hearing about that behind the scenes aspect of "old-fashioned" TV. That was cool. It's so funny how just the act of watching TV back in the day now seems nostalgic. Lol. That's so weird.
I was at a Chicago Cubs game maybe 15 years ago, and between innings (not even the 7th inning), they announce "CONAN OBRIEN." And Conan, wearing a suit, sprints from the right field bullpen to the opposite side dugout and disappears. He didn't stop to say anything, stop to wave, or anything. It was incredibly random, and then quite funny.
Seeing a picture of alf and Conan's hair would be magical. On saint Louis it is magical to go up in the arch. And when you go by that town you see it far away. My mom and I are separate times went up there. And being scared of heights is something. And looking over at a park ranger forced to read a book why you away back and forth. Well maybe Conan will go up there on your fourth trip.
Nikki literally does TV promos for St Louis tourism, but I guess the question caught her off guard. She's not wrong though, things are spread out, and they likely didn't want Conan traipsing back and forth all day.
Yeah but this is better honestly. And I think Conan prefers a laid back atmosphere like this to the rigors and strains of making a late night show, something he did for 28 years.
Conan did quite enough of the late night circus act over the years. The current format suits him quite well: it's more of a team effort than typical late night, and the setup fosters lots of wacky interplay between him and his fellow CoCos. Where current late night shows are concerned, I get plenty of solid laughs from Seth Meyers.
This 3rd (4th?) Act for Conan could aptly be named "Conan Unleashed." He cusses, tells crazy sharp jokes. He no longer fears the retribution of the networks.
I once watched a short documentary about Alf. Apparently the guy who created Alf and worked the puppet was so adamant about maintaining the illusion of Alf's realness, that he'd turn down certain gigs that wouldn't allow him to maintain that illusion. SNL wanted to have Alf as a host, but because the studio audience would see Alf as a non-real puppet in between sketches, the guy refused the opportunity. Man, on one hand I respect the guy's commitment to his craft, but on the other hand... c'mon dude. It's SNL for Pete's sake. Give the people what they want. They wanted Alf!
