  • We are truly in the midst and full swing of a social-media driven society. Although the development of it has been subtle, its impact has been phenomenal. Nearly everywhere you look, you see a hashtag, an @ symbol, or a QR code to encourage us to open up our smartphones and log in to our social media accounts. If you even log out at all in the first place!
And what is even more subtle and at times even straight-up denied by a good majority of people, is how much social media has influenced our appearance. How we present ourselves, what we aspire to be, and even what constitutes as attractive. With trends coming and going sometimes within a blink of an eye. Basically, when you take a selfie, you don’t just want to look attractive. You want to look impossibly attractive. Some resort to specialised third-party apps to improve some features or even erase them completely. Turning an element of reality into something that can be seen, witnessed, and even believed, but never truly experienced. We become avatars in a sense. Wearing digital costumes to hide our true selves.
Within such a polished imperfectly perfect digital environment, however, sometimes the unordinary does break through mediocrity. Someone who challenges what we view as “normal” or “acceptable”. Someone who may go as far to say that instead of trying to look as good as possible on social media, he actually wants to look worse, in order to portray a far more honest representation of humanity.
One such man you may come across, goes by the name of DavidHenryNobodyJr, an ever changing, ever evolving and ever captivating character played by performance artist David Henry Brown Jr, from New York City in the United States. David has really made a name for himself within the digital world, sharing countless clips and images of his bizarre and extravagant costumes, each with their own unique theme, to an audience of over 120,000 followers on Instagram alone!
Just to visit his Instagram page and explore his collage of strange faces, masks and props is enough to make some of you go: What the heck am I looking at here?!" Well, that is (hopefully) where I can help. After meeting him, watching his mini documentary and learning his story as well as his ambitions as a creative, there is so much we can learn from him about just how limitless artistic expression can be as well as a great deal we can learn about ourselves and the current world we live in.
Welcome to another video, everybody. Today we’ll be exploring the mind of DavidHenryNobodyJr.

Reminds me of the Little Baby’s Ice Cream commercials
Honestly as soon as he came on the screen I got the sense it was a commentary on consumer culture and I kinda feel like his work is brilliant. He’s putting a lens on how absurd the whole thing is and how it feels to be the outsider. I also just like bizarre and surreal art
Also the waiter getting waterboarded by champagne… honestly it pretty much describes being in the service industry

I wonder if it has been considered that David's falling into NFTs is just another broader commentary on consumerism culture and how it inevitably will corrupt all of us (probably just a sad man who is being taken advantage of by grifters, but I truly hope for the best for him)

Bold, bizarre, provocative, confusing, ugly, and beautiful. Just my kind of art. It makes you think beyond the "What and Why". It adds a certain edge of "Because and Of Course". It also ignites the phrase "Ok... that's a thing I can't unsee... but I kinda want more."

While I certainly do hold much of David's work in high regard, I can't help but feel his involvement in nfts is counteractive to the core themes of his work. I understand from his words on it that the decision was financial, and I can't blame him for that. Money is necessary to live unfortunately. However, I also feel that there is a noticeable lack of self awareness as he earlier described his current work as being able to live off art without conforming (unlike many of his friends). To me anyways, this is conformity. My joy for art made by myself or others is purely from the fact that it is an expression of humanness. Selling the hypothetical ownership of a work or generating imagery with ai removes the humanity from art. It turns art into a commodity, a product to be produced. As I said, I do love David's work. Considering that, I really am sorely disappointed to see him take the route he's taken as of late.

His early social experiments are actually pretty funny & smart, especially the red carpet prank. I just couldn't help but feel the more art he made, particularly the gross instagram stuff, that he started to embody the same aspects of consumer culture he was against. I know this happens to every artists, especially the ones that taste fame, but after the 100th post of taping gross food to your face or being another New Yorker harassing pedestrians in a crazy costume, we have to admit that there just is no message at that point. It honestly seems like he's simply resorting back to his days as the class clown :/

The environmental impact argument was valid and it was heard and it was fixed. He has only minted work on Ethereum and Tezos, which are Proof of Stake chains (Ethereum was converted from Proof of Work which was the more energy intensive version, energy usage of that chain has been reduced by 99%, Tezos was always Proof of Stake) and minting a piece has the same carbon impact as sending 3 emails. Just so you know that's been addressed. Hosting an hour long video on UA-cam has a bigger carbon impact.

i started the video excited. just yesterday i started wanting to learn of more performance art. i love it. but as the video went on i only felt sadder.
first it was him befriending an ai "artist"
and then came the nfts. the nfts are what got me though. i've always seen performance art as something implicitly almost. anarchist. not exactly, but a bit. or at least something implicitly left leaning, as the whole purpose tends to be making a statement on how society reacts to situations or to reflect what society is. and it feels almost hypocritical to engage in something so. capitalist. i understand it brought him out of a rut, but. it's odd. it feels paradoxical to me. a performance artist engaging in nfts. something that melts down the society performance art reflects. idk. it's interesting yet saddening to me.
not excited to comment this as i expect cryptobros to be real excited to tell me how wrong i am but. idk i figured i'd throw in my thoughts. maybe others will feel similarly.

"There is an additional algebraic structure in the vector spaces of bubbles that are bubbly. The antisymmetry feature of fermions functions as an electric charge value of flying monkeys. And that's understandable. I anticipate that I will have more to say about this to demonstrate a knowledge of orgone accumulators, regardless of the economic ramifications. Never waste time on discussions that make no sense. The only real difference between us and probiotic iguanas is liquid nitrogen. It's well noted that the free home delivery of Planck constants is more effective than the surface emission of Lagrangian formalism. Quantum harmonic oscillators of classified documents are so important in promoting the bonding and friendship of poodles. All of it was predicted by sea bottom silts consisting of rubber chickens. Relativity makes it inevitable that when you bubble, all the world bubbles with you. Everyone should own a waffle maker filled with juicy quicksand."

i never thought i'd give a dislike to one of your videos since so much work and compassion goes into the making of these and you also do so much uplifting of contemporary smaller artists, but the inclusion of david nobody's gushing endorsement of nfts and ai art without any discussion of how these two industries fuck over independent and smaller artists (not to mention the environmental damage of nfts) was extremely unfortunate. I know this is a complicated subject matter and it may have been out of place to mention the negatives of them since sadly they seem a large part of Nobody's philosophy, but i don't think its responsible to portray these things as positive. it just feels hypocritical to the content of the other videos on this channel

The haters on social media, hiding in their comfort zone, are living in the matrix, as far as I'm concerned.. What are they afraid of, and do they truly understand the discomfort they're feeling and why they're feeling it. David's art holds up a mirror to consumerism/celebrity worshipping society. We need that. More than most of us probably realize. When it comes to nft's.. an artist has to survive. Why not use this medium.
