- Today I'm showing you some of my favorite extraordinary reverbs - verbs that inspire creative new ways to send your signal into the atmosphere. These verbs are not for the faint of heart, but for those brave souls who will venture into uncharted reverberation territory to find new sonic landscapes. One of the bonus features of reverbs with "evolving" sounds is that they discourage wanking. Yes, yes, I'm fully aware you can play as fast as you do. But the only way for you to actually HEAR the auditory miracles these things pull off is to *stop* playing for a bit, so you can hear them. I think that's a real gift to music.
Fantastic point. And this is coming from a self professed 80’s wanker. In a lot of the music I play these days (modern church music) I don’t need to try to be Edward Van Halen. So having more spacious reverb really forces me to slow down.
@@MrSpeed-lt8gr Different effects can impose a shift in focus on players. Whenever I hear from players who feel like they are in the doldrums, and need a kick in the arse for their playing and development, I will often recommend getting an envelope-controlled filter (autowah) of some kind, or a pitch-shifter/harmonizer. Autowahs push you to think like a drummer, syncing the sweep to the beat and general rhythm. Pitch-shifter force you to think about melody structure and movement more. Wanking of any kind sounds simply awful with either of those.
Again, not to come down too hard on wanking. Sometimes one has to fill up space and time until a *really* good musical idea pops into your head and fingers. But when you want to go beyond wanking, it's good to have circumstances that force you to practice being creative and expressive even when you play fewer notes.

I used to have a blueSky and a Hall Of Fame 2 on my board but decided to sell my HOF and use only my blueSky. Best decision I made (mainly cause I use more delay than I do reverb).

I like the way he shows so much respect and appreciation for his peers in the business. Reminds me a lot of the ethos of the craft brew industry where there is general agreement that more people making good beer helps grow the whole market. Plus it's just cool to be part of a community of people who love the same stuff.
I guess you could say, Josh is like the Jim Koch (of Sam Adams) of boutique pedals --- the PR guy for the whole industry/community.
I love the Afterneath, but also love the Meris Mercury7 reverb. I think the classic Jeff Buckley album Grace would not be the same without all the reverb, especially the beautiful and haunting classic Hallelujah. What a song.
So Real was also like a love song dedicated to reverb. The whole album is amazing. I saw Jeff play a solo show in Cambridge, MA, just him, a tele, and a Twin, and it changed me.
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room wouldn't be the same without that massive reverb on that thump in the intro riff
Oh-oh, dangerous topic for me. Non-ordinary delays and reverbs are my kryptonite. Josh, your channel (and your good vibes, humor and smarts, and love for pedals) are top of the line, elegant and educational, love it all! See, JHS pedals are expensive to import to Brazil (where I live), but I gotta have them, for the love that is put into them. Thanks endlessly.

I bought a Carl Martin Headroom Reverb because the demo had someone playing that song to absolute perfection.
The Old Blood Noise Dark Star is my personal favorite reverb pedal. I've written full-blown songs around it, making it absolutely necessary to remain perpetually on my board. That, to me, is what makes a pedal truly special.
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room wouldn't be the same without the reverb filling the space between John's chord stops.
The Verve's A Storm in Heaven is so much soaked in reverb that you could almost wring it out of the record and drink it up...
My favorite reverb is the Strymon Big Sky. I made the investment (it's a bit expensive) and never looked back. I think it will be the only reverb I will ever need.

@@davidmbeitler Dont think and get it. You wont be disappointed. DONT get it if you're only going to use basic reverb settings you can get from a more simple pedal.
Get one..... get it now.... yes its expensive, yes it probably has more tones than you'll ever need, but it sounds amazing, I haven't had a bad experience with it at all.....

I couldn’t vouch more for the Old Blood Procession. Years later and it’s still my most inspiring wild card pedal. Every sound is so beautiful and being able to hold trails is magic.
This Mortal Coil- Song To The Siren. Definitely wouldn't be the same with out the reverb.
I have to say how impressed I am that Josh puts out all these great, informative videos on pedals. He is more than just a fantastic builder, he is also a huge fan and historian on all things that make guitar sounds!
Pearl Jam's 10, the use of reverb on that album gave it its mystical feel...

I agree. Master Slave, Garden, Release, Oceans, Porch crazy middle section, all benefit from it.
They hated it so much though, that VS was completely dry by comparsion.
And when they remastered Ten, they removed most of the Parashar's work.

The Neunaber Seraphim is one of my favorite Reverbs. I love the ability to go from my more “normal” Reverb sound to the shimmer verb by just holding the foot switch down for a couple of seconds.
Totally. I use that in my rig too. The ability to turn the shimmer on and off with my foot is why I went with that pedal.

Loved the Dark World! Also, I own a Boss RV-5 and I think that the modulate setting is amazing.
Agreed, I've the RV5 for the modulate and the DarkWorld is the pedal I want so hard. Sounds amazing!
I got the Slö the day it was released! Love that thing so much.. I haven't really figured out a good setting for Dark that I'm happy with, but the Rise setting is fun
You're right that the RV-500 covering all of them and much more... I"ve had it for 5 years and still discovering new ways to use it... Biggest bang for the buck reverb, IMO...

I bought a gfi specular tempus recently. It was a lot of money for me (a student) but I am super happy with it.

Agreed, I have the Polara and the Orange/Yellow delay they make, and I love both. The sound great and have amazing build quality. Definitely punching in above what you pay for them.

Personal fave reverb EQD: Ghost Echo. I'm not into complex reverb myself, I like pretty and simple... :)

The TC T2 reverb is on my board and I love it, quite unconventional sounds as well as great atmospheric stuff, it’s awesome.

Love my Context, too! Its input does overload pretty easily, so it sits pretty near the front of the effects loop.
I really like my Strymon Flint! The plate is my personal favorite...

Love the Afterneath, big fan or EarthQuaker's stuff...but that Specular Tempus! I've always loved the reverb on Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser.
The specular tempus is the greatest pedal I have ever owned....I will keep it forever...so intelligently designed!!
my favorite reverb on any album is the effect John Frusciante used on After The Ending off of The Empyrean. There's some crazy non-linearness that I don't quite understand but I love anyways, as well as just the space that it provides and the emotion it conveys
My fave reverb out of the ones you played? Well, even though I own and adore the Afterneath, I'd say it was the Caroline, hands down. That sub-layer of grunge just grabbed me, as did the runaway filth with the 2nd switch. Great vid, Josh.

I enjoy my Wash (V2). I want to pick up a Stargazer and a Moby Dick.
A Black Mile to the Surface by Manchester Orchestra has the best verb on it!

Have you checked out the Boss SP-1 Spectrum? Its sort of spendy but I heard that Keyboardists used them. It's my favorite guitar pedal.
I'm a guitarist and very mediocre keyboard player. I liked to use the keys to add a nice pad to some of my bands 4 track recordings back in the day.
The first time I plugged my el-cheapo Casio keyboard into a pedal my first question was "why didn't you try this sooner, dummy!"
An MXR 4 knob flanger was my favorite pedal to mess with. Took a bit of tweaking but the end results were worth the effort.
Besides the obvious flanging it made a great chorus and doubling pedal. At a certain setting you could hear two almost distinct instruments/voices.
It even emulated a steel drum sound pretty nicely. I still kick myself for selling it. Thinking of buying a new one but afraid it won't be quite the same.
I love the Meris Mercury7. I had my eye on it ever since it came out and eventually got one. I highly recommend it. It's got (only) two algorithms, but they're wonderful and it has kind of its own sound. I like that.

@@leepshin Are you joking? $200 is standard fare for a reverb pedal. Strymon Big Sky is $450+, and the Blue Sky is around $250 used. Eventide Space goes for $300+.

The album that the use of reverb really got to me was Led Zeppelin 1. Back in 1969, this thirteen y/o kid was completely blown away. I know that by today's standards, some may scoff. Perhaps, this is just one of those cases where 'you had to have been there' for it to make sense. Great video! BTW, The way we look at horses? What a stellar piece of music! Thanks for the turn on.
I'm stoked to look into the Seymour Duncan Silver Lake. The Auto-Swell setting on the DL4 was my favorite so this seems to be my cup of tea. Also, the OBNE PROCESSION on the trem setting is my favorite from that pedal too. Love my Hardwire Supernatural Ambient verb. The plate mod and shimmer settings are amazing.
Song that comes to mind is "Pretty Girl at the Airport" by The Avett Brothers. The reverb on the vocals makes the song all the more melancholy
I have a Peavey SRP-16 reverb from the early 80's that still gets a spot on my board. It has a massive amount of selections and has all I ever needed in a reverb. It was designed to be a rack mount reverb in a pedal format. My only complaint is the colour they chose. Its Pink lettering on an eggshell background and is very hard to read. Fortunately, I've become so use to it, I can manipulate it without too much trouble.

Bought a RV-500 recently; cheaper than it's multi footswitch competitors and has some really unique features and sounds. Unfortunately not the most intuitive, but definitely a pedal tinkerer's playground.
one awesome intuitive thing about it though, once you get used to the menus, patch, control, save etc, the other pedals in the line, like my boss dd 500, as well as the boss ms-3, have the same menu layouts. So, once you can use 1, you can quickly use them all, and with the save patches, footswitch accessibility, and amazing MIDI recall, once you spend all that endless time perfecting your tones, they can be recalled live so easily. A lot of work up front, but amazing like Josh said, these pedals will do any sound on this Video. Keep tinkering, I promise you'll love it.
I have other pedals I love, but when playing live, I set up those sounds in the 500's for ease\y recall, and it never disappoints!
Afterneath and the OBNE procession are 🔥🔥🔥🔥
The Mooer Ocean Machine falls right into this category. It even plays itself!!
I've got the Walrus Slo. It can add some great sounds to any song me and my guys are playing. They live how it sounds too! I'd love a Ventris someday.
The Police Secret Journey from Ghost in the Machine was one of the first times I remember hearing an ambient reverb effect that wasn't early Pink Floyd
The Caroline Meteore reminds me of my Premiere spring reverb - really gritty and if you crank up the amount of reverb, the reverberations seem to smack each other into overdrive. Very unique sound. Thanks for another cool video, John. Er, Josh.

The Offspring setting sounds really nice, wish it was a standalone pedal.

Really want that Afterneath, just knocks my socks off every time I hear it. I currently satisfy my ambient sweet tooth with the limited edition blue Astronaut+ by Shift Line paired with the Flashback II. It's my main pad combo during church time. My always-on reverb is the Immerse by Neunaber. I'd like to use that more for ambient, but until I get another reverb to do the heavy lifting, it'll stay where it is. Great video, man. You had me drooling the entire time!

Shout out to Digitech Polara, it's pretty cheap, great build quality, its stereo, and the halo setting sounds incredible.

Cool episode again. As for albums with great use of reverb, Tom Waits "Mule Variations" is brilliant, as is Joe Henry's "Reverie," which was recorded basically live in a room with the windows open. I don't personally own any reverbs that do weird sounds, but the Catalinbread Talisman is an impossibly good plate emulator. I like to combine it with other stuff to create all sorts of cool sounds.

that dude Eric Haugen does a bunch of demos on Marc Ribot, Tom Wait's guitarist (and HUGE part of his sound) they're amazing. Marc Ribot is a genius.
The Particle Verb on my Line6 M9 is something I'd call extraordinary, specially with an expression pedal. I can spend hours and hours with it.
I’ve got a Keeley mod workstation, and with the expression pedal on the plate reverb, there is a phenomenal feedback effect that adds a little distortion. It sounds really cool.

Reed Tard Eh, two of my three amps(all tube) have no reverb. Maybe that’s a personal problem on my part but regardless, there are still a significant amount of amps on the market with uninspiring or nonexistent reverb. Besides, sometimes a song may call for more than just the typical spring sound which unfortunately can only be achieved by this digital witchcraft.
