Fantastic demonstration and championing of this fantastic feature. I’m even more excited that it’s being brought to iPhones in iOS 16.4 for telephone calls.
I've been using Slack and Google Meets through Safari and since those two don't have a voice isolation feature, and my neighborhood can get very very noisy sometimes. I love this new feature
Yepp, simply amazing. What impresses me most, is that the functionality while speaking is flawless too. On iMac no real need for a bulky condenser up to your face anymore. Absolute gamechanger, still like my mics but that's something I've never expected :)
Hey Chris, how did you capture the sound in your video? I'm trying to get voice isolation working on my M1 MacBookPro running Sequoia 15.0.1 but regardless which app and Mic I've tried so far, I can hear no difference at all.
Interesting! When you're using your mic, do you see an orange mic (or if your camera is on - a green camera) at the top of the screen to the left of your clock? If so, that's where the voice isolation option will appear. If you don't see that on the top bar, bring up your sound input page in settings and see if there's anything listed there. I have seen that some software can interrupt the core MacOS Isolation feature (Audacity for instance) and prevent it from actually applying to the audio being captured. I use it on both of my MBP (14" M3 and 16" M1 Max) and it works in all the apps I use for conferencing and recording. OBS, FCP, Zoom, Teams, WebEx, etc. - But like I said before, there are apps that simply don't use the feature and bypass the OS setting and capture the raw audio.
@@ChrisLeiter Yes, I see the option to activate voice isolation and I can choose it - there is a short pause in audio when i change it. But other than that, it simply doesn't seem to do anything (or at least not enough that I can hear a difference). But now that you mention that other software could interfere: I remember that I played around with some audio tools some time ago, while looking for a solution to the latency issues with HomePods and other audio devices. Maybe there is still something on the system which prevents voice isolation from working. Thanks for the hint!
Hey! Sorry for the delay, wasn't near the computer until just now. I tried every trick in the book, but it seems that Audacity takes the raw input and bypasses the Mic Mode that MacOS sets. So even if you configure the mic in system settings to be in 'Voice Isolation' mode, it still captures everything that the mode would normally filter out.
I recorded a call from Google Meet using both Safari and Google Chrome - Tested Voice Isolation and Standard mode and I can't see a difference. Voice Isolation doesn't filter env noise at all.
I suppose it may be how google meet uses the system microphone? What you’re hearing in this video is how it works for all of the use cases I’ve tested it on so far 👍🏻
I opened QuickTime Player, and when I hit "new video recording" or "new audio recording", I got a Mic or Camera icon at the top of the menu to the right of the clock. I click that and can select "Voice Isolation" or "Standard". If you're not seeing the option at the top of the screen, you may have too many icons visible in the menu. To change which MacOS icons show in the menu, go to settings -> control panel
Producers/Engineers BEWARE: I use UAD console into pro tools and was recording a singer and when she hit her upper register the audio completeky dissppeared . I turn iff everythjng swapped mics etc but it was this feature. I think ive got it iff but yeah its been screwing up my recording and i couldnt figure out why the sound had changed ubtil that note she sang was swallowed by digital sound fx like leaving the matrix. So many nessed up sessions.. So angry 😤
@louie1005 On the Taskbar (mines across the top of my screen) there is an orange microphone. Click it and it says protools with 2 Mic Mode options "Standard" 👍 and "Voice Isolation" 👎
You need to be using a supported app. I’m not sure which do or do not. Here’s an article from Apple that says all macs since 2018(!!) can use these modes: support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/use-mic-modes-on-your-mac-mchle82b42f0/mac
did u find a solution? I found a way which I couldnt check properly because I have krisp premium. But if you have time you can try this. Install the krisp, choose macbook's mic on krisp and then go to chrome, in the adress bar where you see the mic icon, choose the krisp mic. Here is what I tested: Even if I do not turn on noise cancelation on krisp, it works. I assume that in this way it uses mac's N.C. feature. I am not sure whether it will work for you or not. Note: to me Mac's N.C. works slightly better.
Well yeah, not exactly the kind of solution you’d use for a real production, but for a video call, or a quick demo talk track? It’s great, and built into the OS
I have the Elgato Wave XLR interface for my Shure MV7X and both Elgato’s included noise cancellation and the Nvidia Broadcast work great! I know that’s a pretty specific configuration, but that’s what I use for all PC recordings!

Thank you fir the video tho. No one was addressing this feature even existed. Wish id found this video months ago 😅
love this demo. practical
This was crazy..... Very useful video..🙂
This is the 2nd best 'Live-Noise-Suppressor' available… after Krisp.
But it comes for free with Mac, so definitely not bad not bad!
How would you compare Krisp vs MacOS Voice Isolation? What's the pros/cons? (Besides the cost and perhaps Krisp's new transcription feature)

Hi Chris, it works with Audacity properly? I cant see the setting of isolation option in bar, when I use Audacity.

I use my earphones for meeting. I prefer to use macbook m1's mic for better quality. Which mic should I use to get voice isolation....
what a time to be alive
Love this, thanks for the lovely video💌
Try it with screaming toddlers. Better yet two screaming toddlers. That’s why I only trust AI based noise cancellation lol 😂
😂 I will have to emulate them with sound from a speaker or something. Haven’t had two screaming toddlers in my house for a very long time 🤣
How to enable mic mode for quicktime player on Apple M3 Pro?.I cannot see it.

@louie1005 On the Taskbar (mines across the top of my screen) there is an orange microphone. Click it and it says protools with 2 Mic Mode options "Standard" 👍 and "Voice Isolation" 👎
Broooo that’s how I even got to this video at 3:15 am 😭
It happened to me and I just had to tweek the sound, and change the mic position and that fixed it
Is this feature there in air m2 ??
@@cod.creators all M series have this feature. I was testing on an M1 Max

Does it work with macbook air m1 ?
It should! I was testing this on my M1 Max MacBook Pro
@@ChrisLeiter thanks
i couldn't find the mic mode on my M1 macbook, can you help? @@ChrisLeiter
Is that works for all apps. How about zoom?
Yeah! It will work for any app. Some Apps like Teams have built in Active Noise reduction so you may need to disable one or the other.
