A few months ago we went to visit the incredible abandoned city called Slab City. It used to be a military base but hundreds of squatters came and made it their home. We went with our friend Justin Escalona and truly had a fascinating experience. We thought the place would be hostile and dangerous when in fact it was inviting and beautiful (in it's own way). Who are we?
Yes Theory are four friends from four different countries who constantly seek discomfort in order to grow. Ammar, Thomas, Matt and Derin met in Montreal, Canada in the summer of 2015 and bonded over their shared desire to live a life that challenged and excited them. Wizard is actually super cool - met him a few years ago as he just sits there and smokes. He’s super kind and he kinda looks like Santa Claus these days btw.

When I went there a dude stabbed himself and his guts were falling out and a helicopter came flying around with a spotlight (it was night time) and the dude didn't want to be found and they left. Idk what ever happened to him. I stayed there for 2 weeks
I'm a new Yes Theory fan but I just want to say how genuine and thoughtful you guys are and it really comes across in your videos. You are opening my eyes to some beautiful people and places. You are all amazing and keep up the great work. You deserve all the peace and success in the world. I guarantee some of these documentaries will outlive some of the stuff on National Geographic.

I've been there 4 or 5 times. The last couple times after Mr. Leonard Knight passed away. It was an honor meeting him and having a short conversation. Also, the locals I've met in Slab City have all been welcoming and nice. A must visit for anyone.
I was expecting a place of cannibal hillbillies and runaway criminals, but it just ends up being the burning man festival if it was a city
At Burning Man, the catch phrase among old-skool burners is "Safety Third!" which they said in the video. So definitely some burner mindset there. Love it!

Certified by a scoeity that claims that nobody is a little bit insane... but we all are, it's why he probs then said after "i'm a well-rounded person", i think we're all more so insane living in the "normal society" than we'd ever be living off-grid because people try us nuts lol and truth is we aren't supposed to live amongst so many people the population is too big, we just start to squabble or feel more and more closed in and on edge. My story of Leonard and salvation mountain. My wife and I visited in the late nineties out of curiosity. There were very few people that day, so we had Leonard pretty much to ourselves. After taking the tour, I asked him were he stayed. He then pointed to an old jeep wagoneer and stated that he couldn't get the rear door to shut. I asked him if I could take a look at it. He said please. I explained that I may be able to fix it as I had been a repairman on the assembly line at the Toledo plant. I asked him to get me a screwdriver and hammer. It seen his striker plate had slipped out of place. I adjusted the plate and the door closed as if it had just rolled of the final inspection line. He thanked me and said " God sent you to me this day" !

I personally felt visiting the city not because of its name but how awesome people are over there. When I read the thumbnail "NO LAWS" I expected this to be more kind of Purge movie; but it turns out to be completely different . Do not judge the book by its cover :)

I think it is totally in incredible for one man, 80 years old, decided to do one thing, such as this, In order that God be remembered. His reward is truly great.

I've been been to Slab city and stayed a few nights. There's definitely laws. It's a little bit more relaxed than the rest of the country if you're in your own little backyard because there's no designated police force specifically for the area, however, the sheriff usually does a drive through at least once a day. And as far as the junkies at night, you're fine if you stay in your own space and keep to yourself. Place isn't as bad as some people (who've never even been there) make it out to be.

they only saw/experienced the touristy side of the slab. there's a lot more to it that isn't as peaches and cream. People are always burning each other out for example. (setting camps on fire). I could go on, but I'll leave it at that...
still a pretty scary place to be, especially if you are a female.. I wouldn't be surprised if the women who choose to stay there are regularly sexually assaulted.
Just because you see happiness occur during the daytime and the touristy side of the town, don't forget there's other parts of this town, and I'd hate to see what happens in the evening or in the drug areas.
Unfortunately this video didn't interview any of the women and didn't ask anyone about crimes they've witnessed or if they have been a victim of a crime, as I'm sure they'd talk about regular assaults, robberies, sexual assaults, rape, etc.
With no telephones, police, medical services, etc... if you are raped, injured, assaulted, robbed, or murdered, then you better be OK with that because there's nothing you can do about it because you are on your own. No police or ambulance will come for you. So you better be able to defend yourself and/or willing to kill or be killed.

I don't think its so black and white. It's nuanced. There is good and bad everywhere. Yes Theory just usually focuses on positive things, so that's reflected in the video. But you're right it is good to acknowledge both sides.
Something tells me Raven didn't mean to erase male sexual assault victims. They do exist and deserve as much sympathy as female victims, but I think people focus on women because it is much more rampant and visible in society due to various reasons. it's an easy mistake to make.

Last year I visited Salton Sea, Salvation Mountain, Slab city and their library not knowing is was a lawless city. I had an incredible time with my friends and the art was beautiful, beyond anything I have ever seen. I definitely recommend visiting their library btw, to who ever is reading this, you will not regret it!
Edit/Update: While Corn is no longer full time care taker of the Lizard Tree Library it is most certainly still open. Go see Zoe and say hi!

There is a small town in Tennessee called Iron City. They have tried to establish a police force on two occasions and both times the police car was stolen and flipped upside down in the Shoals Creek. This place is just under a 2 hour drive from my house and my ex-girlfriend grew up there so we'd travel out a couple times a month to visit her old family and friends. The place truly is awesome. On a couple of our drives down there we found traders and we would trade some of our possessions for theirs (they didn't accept money). These trades often included something of emotional value or earth value, definitely a great experience.
Not even my dude. Diamond, gold, silver, copper are just some examples of precious metals. This is what I am referring to when I say earth value. I'm conservative/centrist and very capitalistic.

That is the premise of this town, they realize that there are no laws, and if there are no laws, people have a full understanding that when they do something to another person, they have to take it into their own terms, hence why I think everyone there just prefers to be friends and avoid making enemies, you dont want to have enemies in a lawless world, cuz we all know where that ends

I remember visiting this beloved slab city once a year with my dad. I got to meet the man who created the "Love Jesus" hill and have met many of the locals who lived there on and off over the years. I've never met such wonderfully nice and down to Earth people anywhere else. It deeply humbles me to see that other people can get the same sense of satisfaction that I once did years ago and that this place has picked up quite a reputation for its welcoming and kind vibes, despite seeming abandoned.

That's because California doesn't have places to lock up the crazies so they run free or the state has to find places away from the rest of society for them to be so they don't bother anyone . I nickname those places " Uranus". Btw , I am also " certified" w/ papers to prove it therefore I am authorized to use the term " crazies" as I see fit 🤯..
