when i saw you declaring war on everyone i thougt wow he's got balls but when you declared war on eastern rome i my heart stopped for a brief moment xD
Imagine some frankish barbarian landlord being visited by the emperor himself; and the emperor going: "Hey; you wanna pay me; you know; like; 300 bucks so i break my alliance with the eastern roman empire?" *wink wink*
Won't mind at all. On a side note: I had never thought of skirmishing like that before. You decimated their entire army before the true battle began. That's insane. I would've simply rushed in and hoped for the best.
The "This Is Total War" achievement is INSANE when playing as either Roman faction. Especially when most of the map hates you. With every fibre of their being. It'd be interesting to see the "This Is Total War" achievement when playing as the Huns.
Great job on that battle. I tried two WRE campaigns on legendary so far and got beat bad. I did every Rome campaign on Rome 2 on legendary and Sparta on WoS on legendary but I was not prepared for WRE. Seeing this video I think I understand what kind of mentality I'll need and will give it another shot sometime soon. Thanks and please keep these videos rolling!
I was looking for anyone who ever even survived WRE and could give some pointers, and found this. This is the most epic let’s play I’ve ever seen to date and watched every minute of every episode from start to end. Crazy shit. I was hooked.
Back in the day when Legend was not only a masochist but also the most powerful version of hismelf at total war! Regardless love the content mate, keep it up and make sure you’re having fun!
I definitely aggree about christianity, but what really grinds my gears is that getting rid of it does not change the tech tree. That's a major overlook, especially since pentarchy see still blocks building of pagan teples for no reason whatsoever and the policies that disable your legacies become outright detrimental, but not getting them prevents you from finishing up the tech tree. It's a massive overlook on CA's part.
@@TheRealBrotherLance Rome starts with legacy technologies that let you build peak roman shit, like aquaducts, theatres, etc. They have a central tech tree branch that progressively disables these in exchange for christian monuments, like monasteries or churches. This is a hardcoded roman tech tree branch. So if you decide to keep rome as a pagan republic, and not go for the christian kingdom, you are not only stuck with a completely useless branch of you tech tree, that also blocks some other civic tech, but you also can't build your religious buildings in rome and a couple other cities designated as pentarchy see, because apparently a society that's overwhelmingly latin pagan would give a shit about this. It's an enormous oversight and I can't believe they haven't patched it.
Came here from the Warhammer Total War vids after hearing this campaign is abominably hard. Shocked to see him doing trade agreements and negotiating right at the start of this...
It's interesting that Christianity is a massive drain on the Empire in this game. Creative Assembly seem to be stuck in the nineteenth century with their historical viewpoint. Nobody listens to Edward Gibbon any more. Recent scholarship and archaeology has actually shown that Western Rome didn't decline all that much in terms of trade and prosperity before the 400s. It had reinvented itself multiple times and survived decades-long civil wars like the crisis of the 200s and constant ruler changes. What finally killed the (Western) Empire was more likely the simultaneous catastrophes of the Vandals taking over Northern Africa and the Huns invading from the north. Modern Tunisia was the breadbasket of the Western Empire (the game doesn't reflect this, having only two minor farms in that province) and the dual Empire's failure to retake it crippled its ability to keep its barbarian allies loyal. Simultaneously, the Huns drained the Empire's strength, and when Atilla died, the Germanic tribes had no reason to stay allied to Rome. Even so, each barbarian king saw himself as a continuation of Roman rule. Rome was not killed off in 476, and it was destroyed more by military action and disloyalty than economic decline.
Yeah the fall of Rome was attached to so many things at once, that blaming it all on a religion, one that was a major part of roman politics and life for about 200 years at that point, seems rather disingenuous
The Arabs did literally the same exact thing 2-300 years later but it's all about the vitality of the Arabs in that case. People can't see the connection. It was just Romanized border people in both instances who saw a chance and took it. The Germanics just happened to be decentralized and without their own religion that's the only difference.
I saw it said western roman empire and I was like "this is gonna be epic" then I realised it was this is total war and I was like "this is gonna be the best series ever!!" Great video (as always). I really hope you manage to beat this. If you do, then there really is no challenge you can't do.
It would have been more of a challenge if the dim AI had actually been behind its walls rather than stand still for half an hour getting shot. The wall is there to prevent them running back into the city apparently.
Legend of skirmish. My god that skirmish was very long but I enjoyed every second of it. I gotta say that was a brilliant battle, perfection can't be rushed. Looking forward to watching this whole campaign and you definitely earned my sub. Out fucking standing comrade
That s a real challenge ! I am glad you chose the more difficult campaign ! Bad army ; bad diplomatic, economic and social situation : Let s start this ;) i m waiting the nexts episodes !
Great stuff, can't wait to see how this goes. Also I have been watching your campaigns for a long time and this his to be the greatest channel for Total war stuff, good job.
It's interesting checking out your old stuff, I don't know if it's age, sound equipment, or lifestyle changes; but you sound so much more healthy and happy in your newer videos
Ok,i just saw your video and i got to say than even when playing TW series for almost 15 years now and 14 of maximum difficulty, i learned quite a lot and i ll try watch all of these.15 years someone would say would make me very experienced but also quite the slack,i just go in and hope i win cause i'm too good :S,cause ballsy. GJ man!
I'm only on episode 40 of the Huns (extremely impressive, btw); but immediately clicked this video when I saw it. I'm literally on the edge of my seat; Hollywood would do well to hire you. Unique strategies (and very intelligent too, imho). Looking forward to many more episodes in this BRUTAL campaign.
Never seen this play through of yours. Seems impossible to me to win while at war with the Eastern Empire but judging for the other comments I think you won. I’ve tried to win as Western Rome on the hardest difficulty doing a normal campaign like 5 times and lost every time. I’m not too bad at the game, but I have a lot to learn. Can’t wait to binge watch this.
When I tried the western Roman Empire on legendary it took up half of the total time I played Attila, at the time I had 164 hours on it. The most rage I’ve ever had in total war, so flipping hard. I did unite the empire again, after a few hundred turns.
You Would Think that some of these People would be legitimately Confused at an Empire miles away from them that they don't even border declaring war on them and that some of them might try to ease the tension with counter peace offers but...
8 years later this is probably still one of his best total war playthroughs ever
Yeah i agree
It's certainly got me coming back to rewatch.
Doesn't even think while declaring war with everyone, then doubts heavily if he wants to destroy fishing jetties.

The Western Roman Empire on Legendary?
You're a fucking badass.
Don't forget This is Total War
Yes it's not easy with no mods on Legendary dumbarse..
And declaring war on everyone.
Duesal Bladesinger anything less would be too damn easy for the man. He's the Chuck Norris of Total War.
This was the day when legend became a god...
+Kieran Witgen "GodofTotalWar coming soon.
+Tavi Sounds like an RTS title for the game God Of War.
I still watch this sometimes.... This is what solidified him as an actual LEGEND of total war...
I agree. Especially the first like 30 episodes are pure strategic genius

LegendofTotalWar
You will never get crushed, you may be defeated.
Kryos no, but I'm bound to eventually lose a hotseat or a head to head - if we can get any of them finished.
Wow - you decided to do it as This is Total War? Man you have some *SERIOUS* guts. *grabs popcorn* :D.

+Steel4 But the Huns get integrity bonuses per faction they're at war with don't they?
Bradley Moore They do. So, it'd be easier to get the Achievement as either the Huns or the White Huns.
Probably much easier with the Huns since they don’t have a huge empire and they start off with better troops.
