I've been playing THPS since 2000. Most of these I intuitively figured out on my own, but I had no idea the game penalized you for hitting the same rail. That is is some fantastic advice, thank you.
So much muscle memory that I now need to break! Started practicing these techniques today, and I'm getting the hang of it. It's super hard to break those old habits like special grinds and manuals.

love the precision of language with “address” rather than “fix”, the presentation was more thoughtful than video essayists and technical tutorial youtubers who ought to be paying a lot closer attention to that sort of thing
This is a fantastic tutorial, thank you for making this! This remake is my first real experience with Tony Hawk, while I got solid at most of the basics, things like double grinding, double manualing and different special trick tips (that being air specials are way more useful) I didnt really know much about, thank you!
That shoulder buttons to spin has been hardest for me because I'm so used to just holding the direction of my flip trick to keep a 180-360 going. When grinding, this also gives me a wider variety of grind tricks. But I've been able to hit 1 million without that or any specials of any kind, just making good use of gaps and the short manual/grind times as mentioned here. These extra tips are looking to take me to the next level! Thanks man!
This is my tip for balancing. Example: Your balance is starting to run out in your manual or grind and the meter is heavily in one direction when you jump out of it. The next time you go back into that grind/manual/lip push your balance to go the opposite direction hard before you start the trick and you will never insta bail soon as you try to do that trick again.
Grew up on THUG1 and 2, then THAW. THUG2 was my childhood. My skill capped at 200k. Then THPS1+2, since I’m older and better at video games, I reached 600k. After watching this and practicing relentlessly the last 6 months, my best combo is now 24mil. I have 2 skate parks left to get the secret score on. These tips changed my world. Thank you Andy!!
What I would love to see is basic combos that are easy to practice that eventually lead to bigger, more complicated combos. Its easy for Andy to show these combos because he has so much practice and time into the game, break it down a bit to make it easier to digest. Dude is amazing at the game but when you are capable of doing an 800k combo without trying, you are obviously God like tier to my beginner tier.
Wow.. The whole time I was playing I was relying on special grinds and manuals. I feel silly now. Thank you. Now it would be great if you could upload tip videos for each level like good lines that can go forever and stuff like that.

Having been playing TH games since I was.. 5? Meant I knew most of these instinctively just by repeated bailing. I'd avoid doing most of the balance penalty ones without really thinking about it, but didn't really have a concrete confirmation about how the mechanic works until I watched this. Excellent.
I think it wouldn't look good if it said at the beginning "BTW, don't use the awesome looking special grinds and manuals we added in"... but yeah, it would work as an advanced tutorial or stuff like that.
I'm in the same situation. I played THPS a ton when I was younger and always used dpad to spin. Today I've just been doing some free skate sessions and brute-forcing against my muscle memory using R1/L1 to spin. Feels like I'm relearning the game all over again, but hopefully at some point my brain just switches over.
Eventually you get used to your finger pressing on L1 every time you jump, plus it adds to your multiplier. I sucks at tying to spin with R1 tho I only is L1
I've been playing THPS for nearly 15 years and I find it the best to combine special grinds and manuals with airs. For example in THUG Pro there's a special manual called hot rod which is pretty much essential because it gives you additional speed.
I think a tip you missed but mentioned offhand, would be to always spin. your specials and regular tricks are worth so much more if you can throw a spin on them, even when doing a kickflip or single flatground trick, make it a 180 trick at the very least. I notice you do that all the time in your lines, but didn't specifically mention that, just the 540 specials =)
Very cool. I was wondering why in all these “high score” videos players were not using special manuals or grinds. I am in the million point club but now with these tips I am hoping to get something higher!
Lol yeah, it's not just a case of knowing what to do in the abstract. You also need to be able to implement it. Some of this tips are quite easy to master though and will benefit you tremendously (for example the game penalizing you for grinding the same rail twice or manualing more than twice without an interceding trick, revert, grind or wall ride).
This was such a straight-forward, to the point, informative video. Seriously top tier. No bullshit or filler or pandering. It's sad that this type of content is RARE now on youtube, but I just want to let you know how much I appreciate the no BS approach. Also thanks. I just bought this game after rocking THPS 3 on my 64 last year lol. Stoked to get into er.
I think this advice is good, *_but_* , the problem you're understating is that people have to be able to maintain speed and air by maximizing wallies and maximizing the initial tricks to boost their base score. That means being exceptionally good at acid dropping, reverting, and timing the wallie. It works really well if you can do this and you'll score hundreds of millions, but most people can't (like, 99.9% of players, which is why all the high scores exponentially increase towards the top 50 ish players). It's incredibly hard, just try to wallie with the consistency andyTHPS or prevzzy do. Personally, I think most people would be better off keeping their special grinds/manuals, taking your advice when it comes to everything else, but not trying to revolve their strat around wallies and consistently getting big air. It's just too damn hard for the average person to do. ...but trust me, I'm trying to get down my wallie better so I can do it ;). My record right now is a 10 mill combo, granted I use special grinds/manuals and get to the point where they're both used up a lot quicker than you! :P
How do you rewrite years of muscle memory? I want to follow your advice but I've been turning using the D-Pad for ages. It's hard to remember to do turns with a special combo when I'm so focused on doing the button combination to do the combo. How do you do things so seamlessly and multi-task your button inputs? How do you even train that? I remember playing in a game with you once and you just mopped the floor with everyone there. I don't need to bust out 100m or anything, but I'd love it if I could at least have fun against all these people playing THUGPRO for the last ten years! I feel like I'm terrible at a game series I LOVED as a kid.
Just got back into thps... I can remember playing with you multiple times back in the day on thps4 also thug 1-2. Doubt you remember (aSS) Special-K also (aSS) Ken. Great video btw... need to regain that muscle memory.
You know what playing THPS1+2 reminds me of? Playing the original THPS2 with the Sim Mode cheat enabled, except this time around you can actually combo. Just thinking about the cheats menu on THPS2 took me back to the 2000's.
Sim mode is definitely accurate 😂 On launch day I had a play of the game in store and struggled to even get the sick score on 'hanger'. For context I 100% thps2 earlier this year with every character and by the end I could 100% hanger, challenges and cash, in one session. It took me about 4-5 goes to do all challenges on the easiest level in the game. I'm used to the physics now but the fun cheats are the only things missing from this remake. The graphics are nice and all but there's no disco mode.
not gonna lie.. this helped.. and i been playing from 1.. Main thing i learn that im doing is im using. S for grinds and mans, i need to make them air, i guess air is the only thing for points and the rest you need to just keep going and not milk anything.. Im the type of guy that jumps on and off to the the 2x bigger and bigger but it looks like that hurts me. also i LOVE milking grinds and your saying not to do that at all.. ill try tonight.. ty

@andyTHPS I was watching some old THUG 2 videos for nostalgic vibes. I was wondering do u have any knowledge on who done the girl character combo on the demo?
Last night I finally got the Streets 17.8 million Secret Score. It took me nearly 40 hours of play time (spread out through 3 months of play), but I kept improving. I was getting 4 million, then 7, 10 million, then 12, after that 13, then 14, and soon 15, then 16 million. But last night, I beat the threshold and I know its because of the tips in this video that helped me to improve. However, now I'm dreading the Philadelphia Secret Score.
I never understood how people keep comboing after going for some ramp tricks... I try to manual as soon as I’m approaching the ground but it always end my current combo to start a new one. What am I doing wrong ? Thanks in advance for helping a noob out 😂
You have to revert right when you hit the ramp, then manual. Right trigger on controllers should be the button. There is a tutorial mission on reverts to get better clarification

Well put mate. I agree
"We're supposed to spin with shoulder buttons?"
"Always should've"
Been playing since the very first ones, I get decent scores, never knew grinding the same object penalized you that bad. This is good stuff.
Ok sure, i'll do all of that!
*cries in the shower*
I can't use R1 and L1 to spin... It is burned in my muscle Memory for about 20 years now, to use D-Pad xD
You know what playing THPS1+2 reminds me of? Playing the original THPS2 with the Sim Mode cheat enabled,
except this time around you can actually combo.
@@byz88 Disco mode on the N64 with an Expansion Pak looked incredible at the time lol
not gonna lie.. this helped.. and i been playing from 1.. Main thing i learn that im doing is im using. S for grinds and mans, i need to make them air, i guess air is the only thing for points and the rest you need to just keep going and not milk anything.. Im the type of guy that jumps on and off to the the 2x bigger and bigger but it looks like that hurts me. also i LOVE milking grinds and your saying not to do that at all.. ill try tonight.. ty
Very informational and great tips. Theres some I can work on to get better, I really like your channel not only because of your skill but you have a great attitude and seem very humble ^^
I was looking for this video so much thanks
I dont know too much english so i dont understand it all but HELP ME A LOT ANYWAY
1:26 this man just casually smacks an 800k combo like it’s nothing. Insane.
My god I wish I watched this video before I started playing... did all challenges on first 5 levels using analogue stick, I didn’t even know what the shoulder buttons did.
They should have put one of your songs in this video game. One of Activisions little mistakes of making this game, lol. Hopefully they update this game adding one or two of your songs in the game.
Holy shit my mind is blown and I've been playing these games for 5 years now
I do have precision problem with analog, but I have way more trouble with dpad. Dpad has never worked for me in any game.
I have a ps5 just got this for free on ps plus. How would i change it to the dpad settings instead of using the joysticks and any other changes that would makes this easiest. Please update
hello golden god. Use your d pad instead of the analog. Thanks.
I just hit 4 milli and wondered how the hell the top score is 1.2 billion. Definitely using these tips. Great video!
Omggg. Thank you for the tips! I never know how to make my scores higher. 😩😩😩😩
"You could also use a guitar hero controller or a steering wheel" lol
My god. I've been doing it wrong all these years!
I’m already capable of getting 3 mil combos and this has opened my eyes to even bigger possibilities. Thanks to you I am now woke af
Oh wow. Got to say the grind and manual tips are awesome. I probably could win now
From the legend himself. Thank you for this.
I played this game for hundreds of hours and didn’t know half of these tips 🤯
Awsome video very understanding of how the mechanics work etc
Thank you for these tips! Subscribed!
Jesus Christ, I've been playing Tony Hawks since PlayStation 1 in this man. Just shattered everything I know about this game in like 2 minutes
I've been doing D-Pad spins for 20+ years and this video gave me more than enough reasons to change that immediately, appreciate the quality content!
Did it actually help? Because I can’t tell if it’s worth getting accustomed to or not.
Rule Number 1, never play the remakes
Reject the Antichrist and his Mark! (666)
O_O
@andyTHPS I was watching some old THUG 2 videos for nostalgic vibes. I was wondering do u have any knowledge on who done the girl character combo on the demo?
would love to know too, possibly just another dev
Last night I finally got the Streets 17.8 million Secret Score. It took me nearly 40 hours of play time (spread out through 3 months of play), but I kept improving. I was getting 4 million, then 7, 10 million, then 12, after that 13, then 14, and soon 15, then 16 million.
But last night, I beat the threshold and I know its because of the tips in this video that helped me to improve. However, now I'm dreading the Philadelphia Secret Score.
this is the THPS 1+2 masterclass! Thanks for sharing, before my next stream i'm going to practice these strats and up my game!
There is a tutorial mission on reverts to get better clarification
is andyTHPS really playing this with a DualShock 3 controller or not?
yeah
Bro, ive been playing this game since the DEMO DISC days!!!! And you just taught me SOOOO much, all casual and shit like you didnt just blow niggaz MINDS with these game changing tips lol... The L1 and R1 spins are gonna take a LOOOOOT of muscle memory re-working tho... Im bailing left and right 😆 but it does feel WAY more responsive!!! Once i get used to it, ITS ON!!!! Lol
Thanks for the no-nonsense video too bro
I cannot get used to using the bumpers to spin, fuck.
Wow! I've been playing Tony Hawk games for at least 15 years now, and I still didn't know most of these. It'll be hard to get rid of some of my (apparently wrong) habits, but I think it will be worth it. Thank you so much!
