Inside VETERANS ROW: Homeless Vets Outside Los Angeles's VA

  • Most have of us have seen the unsettling images of American flags fastened to the outside of tents at a homeless encampment called "Veteran's Row" in Los Angeles. It's the type of photo that sticks with you in a haunting way. At least it did for me. It's a stark reminder that tens of thousands of men and women who served our country sleep outside homeless every night. No one should be homeless, and most certainly, no veterans should not have access to adequate housing.
On July 4th, I decided to go visit Veterans Row to hand out socks and make new friends. It was overwhelming in several ways. First, I have walked into homeless camps all over the country. Homeless people are generally nice, but the homeless vets living outside the Veteran's Administration in West Los Angeles were extremely welcoming.
Rob Reynolds's passion is to support homeless veterans navigate services to get the help they need. Rob is a member of AMVETS-CA Post 2, but the two times I visited, Rob was not like any social worker I have seen. Both a veteran and formerly homeless, Rob understands better than most what his brothers and sisters are going through and what they need to get out of homelessness.
This is a powerful interview. I didn't know any of the backstories on Veterans Row, and to be honest, I am still learning. Rob is extremely knowledgeable, and he is working to influence positive change. This video was not planned. After talking a little to Rob, I felt what he was telling me needed to be heard by as many people as possible, so I asked him to go on camera. Invisible People will be doing more to help tell this story in the near future.
Bureaucracy kills. I know of no other place that screams of bureaucracy than Veteran's Row, which sits outside of the Veteran's Administration's approximately 400 acres of land. Granted to the United States Government in 1887 by Arcadia Bandini de Baker to house wounded veterans, the land and rundown buildings have been through decades of controversy.
    From LA Magazine:
Over the decades, the site fell into neglect while VA officials opened up the land to commercial and non-profit use. In 2013, a federal judge ruled that the VA had misused the area by allowing non-veteran related tenants on the land, including the laundry facility for Marriott Hotels, production set storage for 20th Century Fox, and a local soccer club. Brentwood School, a $40,000-a-year K-12 private school, was faulted for running a 20-acre athletic complex on the property.
These problems persisted years later. A 2018 federal audit found that more than 60 percent of the campus’s land-use agreements were illegal or improper, citing a dog park, Red Cross offices, a Shakespeare festival, and a parrot sanctuary. That same year, an operator of a parking lot located on the property pleaded guilty to bribing a VA official with nearly $300,000 as he pocketed $11 million in unreported revenues.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Homeless veterans, two words that should never go together. Most people are happy just saying " thank you for your service" and then forget all about them. The fact of the matter is that people simply don't care. There are billionairs in the US living in mansions, how can they watch war veterans living in a tent on the side of the road and not do anything about it? Disgusting.

They had a HudVash program to get veterans housing, and it turned into a big joke, we veterans faced people with no idea what the hell they were doing, dropping the ball and really bad service. Up yours pogue. As a 100% combat vet from Khe Sanh I saw my share of shit.
Volunteered at The Vietnam vets homeless shelter. I counseled many vets and a big responsibility was finding house less vets jobs. Over time I saw and learned who was disciplined enough to get up off their ass to find work. ( see my previous list above). It was a chore to get them to even go , much less get a job. Very disillusioned to see fellow vets not help themselves . Understanding the different services one can understand what disciplines they learn. Marines are very disciplined ( including me) as no one is going to do it for me. That’s what I was taught. Find out for yourself, ask your fellow street vets what branch they were in.
      Take a poll.
Ashamed of myself, sure, both my Purple Hearts can attest to that stupid comment.

I couldn't see why homeless vets existed until I almost became one myself. I was short-notice honorably separated (served 6 yrs) right after a rare disease diagnosis IN THE MIDDLE OF oncology (cancer center) appointments. Yes they were aware but stated "we can't hold everyone that's getting seen off base". But the fact is all health insurance stops unless you re enlist, get a prior disability rating, or retire. They gave me NOTHING. The disease is so rare and "new" that most hospitals have no code for it and because military doctors didn't know what it was, they honorably discharged me as if I was perfectly healthy saying "they didn't know I was going to be put on chemotherapy". Its standard to get tests done before chemo treatment and they discharged me without 1 phone call to check in on my oncology care. I had to either make the decision to go in debt to continue treatment......or halt all treatments and just get to working with no disability ratings, no care.
When you're discharged with no health insurance, paychecks stop suddenly, and have to find a job asap.....it's a major risk to pull from savings in case you need to move or can't find work right away etc. Health insurance premium is worth a full month rent, car bills, phone, and groceries. Do I want to be homeless or do I pretend like I'm healthy.....🤦🏾‍♀️ military Healthcare is insane. I have tumors, chronic circulation problems, anxiety disorder, chronic fatigue, and more. No Healthcare whatsoever.

Thank you Mark for highlighting and bringing attention to how poorly our veterans are being treated which is just shameful.
Thank you to the gentleman you interviewed for speaking truth to power and the outreach work he is doing. Excellent interview!

Most of these people spent 2 or less yrs in military, had mental issues before service, just so easy to blame VA, military is voluntary, not to blame for your homelessness, these "vets" most, we're the biggest complainers in the military too, never learned personal accountability!! Yes, I'm a Soldier With 20 years!! I have earned my opinion.

because the cheating president in Washington DC is too busy using it on illegals and forgiving student loan debts-ya know the ones who made all the sacrifices..ones we didn't get a choice in the matter. As a Veteran I paid my student loan.
