Making Homelessness Illegal Pushes People to Other Areas

  • Steve lost his job in 2018. After being evicted, Steve tried to live in his car but ended up living in a tent homeless in Los Angeles's Koreatown. I first met Steve about a week ago when there was a large homeless sweep. He had moved all of his belongings to another street while police and sanitation cleaned the area. NIMBYs (not in my backyard) came out of a nearby apartment yelling at the homeless people trying to set up their tents, but they did not have anyplace else to go.
Cities all over the country are making homelessness illegal yet not providing support for homeless people to get out of homelessness. For example, Los Angeles is now pushing massive criminalization laws banning homeless people in areas throughout the city. Steve says making homelessness illegal will just move homeless people to other parts of the city, doing nothing to end homelessness, and he's right.
Homeless people have told me they welcome the cleaning. Still, homeless sweeps are poorly planned and displace homeless people causing trauma and making it harder for service providers to help people. The truth is, the city and country should allocate the resources they put into homeless sweeps to get people off the sidewalks into homes, but the entire system is broken.
Imagine once a week you have to pack up your apartment to move it across the street, then move it back. So often sweeps happen without posted notices, and belonging are destroyed or confiscated, including important documents, medications, and keepsakes like photos.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

In Colorado Springs almost a decade ago there was a local wealthy man with a large property that he opened up to homeless campers. His only stipulation was that they keep his property clean with provided dumpsters and that needles went into sharps containers that were literally within a 10 yard walk no matter where you were in the camp. Within months they turned it into a complete dump with needles EVERYWHERE. The owner warned the homeless that if they don’t clean up their mess they would be forced to leave the property. No one listened or showed any sort of respect to the owner, but yet we’re absolutely PISSED that they were being kicked out. I was one of the volunteers that spent a week cleaning up the site. Now I’m living in Denver and behind my apartments in a nature reserve there are homeless people everywhere and the whole place is littered with trash. Meanwhile there are dumpsters within a minute walk of their camp. Just because you are homeless doesn’t give you the right destroy this planet.

Turned into malls, condo complexes and townhouses. Not much left to rent, and what there is left,is " market rate.". Trump was going to round up and put homeless people in camps, with barbed wire, the whole nine yards. I don't know yet what Biden will do. They need to stop legislation that restricts tiny homes.
That is disgraceful. People need shelter from the cold. They need a place to sleep that is warm and dry out of the dirt. They need a bed and a place to put their belongings and be safe with a lock. Their little room with a bed a dresser. Simple. Shared bathrooms and showers on site.
This is much more kind, compassionate and humane than leaving people to freeze and have no bathroom or place to shower or sleep. People need to have a heart.
This is way cleaner and hygienic for the city too. It is way cheaper. It is more sanitary and looks far better than tattered tents and junk. It will save on police costs, hospital and other health costs by far.
It is way cheaper than paying people to run shelters too and cheaper than street sweeps and cleaning.
It gives people some dignity and a place to call home that is cheaper than other solutions and is merciful and compassionate.

This is what happens when you have a system that teaches "independence" and "individuality" because the government can swoop in "help" you. The concept of nuclear families, the concept of actual education on everyday things that most people are never taught (filing taxes, applying for work, understanding investing for the long term, etc.) is why this country has such a big homelessness issue. People are being raised in terrible households and usually without one of two parents because of the deteriorating culture in this country. It's only downhill from here

    • @letsburn00

The US has the least "swoop in" government of any advanced nation. The idea that it's highly interventional is an urban legend.
Meanwhile, an over reliance on nuclear families as the only way to live is not helping the homeless issue. People need to leave abusive partners. A pretty solid proportion of mental illness is caused by terrible childhoods, which is encouraged by one parent not leaving a terrible one.

I have a small fixed income. I live out of my car not by choice, but because I cannot afford housing anywhere near the ongoing medical care I require. I experience hostility and discrimination frequently. I also experience surprising kindness from strangers. I ruminate and worry about getting out of this predicament, but realistically? Many areas that high numbers of homelessness also have high crime and hurts business owners as well as makes it dangerous for the people who live in that area. Many homeless don’t want to get back in to society, However they want society to provide for them…. There is no clear cut answer. Having pod cities that is located away from the population. The city won't even let them stay there. They rather see the place rot then give the homeless a safer place to stay until they get on their feet. The housing crisis and the prices of apartments that are available are all over $1000 or more plus utilities. Now tell me how in the world will this get people of the streets. The homeless have a place to eat such as soup kitchen ect. But winter is coming and here in Northern Ontario it gets cold. And these people have no where else to go. Something needs to be done.If it is illegal its sad to say, but at least in jail you have all your meals and a warm place to sleep. 😥

It is shameful that there are no resources to help a human being doing it tough, but they have no problem finding a buttload of money for their wars and weapons to kill people with. We need politicians who can see how wrong this is, and who have the compassion to help rather than hurt.

My extra bedroom would be there for her. My sister would not be on the street. So I did pick the wrong family, and body to be this way. Many of us who are living this nomad life have no way out. So, we embrace it now until our cars quit then we wind up on the street. We lose a few of our group each year. I had a trucking company that went belly up in 2008 when diesel hit $5/galllon many of us lost our businesses. We gave 5 figures in taxes every year. But now after we gave into SSDI for years we have to live in our cars to make ends meet. 6 years now for me. And Congress gives themselves a monthly raise bigger than my disability check. What a slap in the face to us who are disabled and must dodge methheads and crazy homeless, Karens who call cops and label us drinkers or druggies when we do neither, and young untrained cops who wake us up when we are parked legally. Not an easy life when you can’t go to the doctor using Medicare only 80% coverage and are in pain all day and night. Gym memberships for showers. No one will hire you. Your situation will get worse when your car repairs are beyond your budget. Then you will be in the elements and be beaten at times. My big fat boy brother told me once if I became homeless he would abduct me and take me to his house if I liked it or not.
I am sick too. I can't imagine being sick and on the streets. I have a wheelchair I use when I need it. You are alone, a lady in a wheelchair and dealing with street homelessness. Your feelings ARE valid. Perhaps it is hard to not be angry and bitter when you know a perfectly good bed and bedroom is going unused at your sisters place as you freeze on the streets. I'm like my brother. If my fatboy brother ever was street homeless I'd find him and drag him to my place. My brother is huge and strong but if he tried to resist me I'd tell him you can enter my home with a fat lip or not but no street homelessness for you.
It's hard to believe a sister could be so cold to you. No one honestly deserves life suffering alone on the streets unless they are criminals, alcoholics and dope addicts who simply can't be trusted inside under any circumstances. Mentally ill people need help no matter what the cost. You deserve housing. Back in the day they used to put disabled people on a priority list to be quickly housed.

Then $450,000 each to people that broke the law and aren’t citizens? I really am on my own. This country is already done and doesn’t know it yet. I am old and do not understand how or why they screwed things up so bad. Cops used to be good, now you just never know as I have been lied to by them. They also don’t know the constitution or the laws. It’s difficult to deal with them when they are so robotic and scripted in their speech, quick to get physical. They are scary now. If I’m lucky a few more years. Honesty if this is life, it really doesn’t matter if I see more of it. So I don’t really fear death. Life is a lot of effort. People are too self absorbed anymore to help others in need. The lump us all into one category and don’t understand the complexities of homelessness. There normal homeless people who can’t work never had addictions and their old or even current families are selfish. I have met many that their families kicked them out for being disabled. That should be a crime but it’s not. Families can’t be charged for causing a person’s homelessness in this country. Although in Canada you can. I even looked into becoming Canadian. Things will probably improve a week before I’m dead knowing my luck, lol. I have met ones that can work but always have an excuse why they can’t. I met more that are unhirable. The stroke affected my short term memory so I forget what I just heard or just read or just learned so I must learn it many times until it becomes a longer term memory. Way different than I used to be. Long term works great. Very hard to find a boss that would be patient with teaching me the same thing all day long until it sinks in. I know people who became homeless because they let their do-nothing druggie felon friends hang out at their place all the time. No landlord wants that kind of trouble. Remember - you are the sum of the 5 people you spend most of your time with. My 5 people work, own homes, drive, stay out of trouble and out of jail, don't drink or do drugs, do community service, speak respectfully to people, and stay off social media. (Fakebook and the like) The community service I do directly concerns homeless, disabled and low income people. I see the ones that are disabled and low income and they don't hang out with the homeless people, who are usually on drugs or drunk and always looking for a flop house /trap house. A very large percentage of the homeless feel entitled and believe someone owes them something. Not all of them, most of them though. You can not help a person that will not help themselves. They have to stay clean (off drugs and alcohol), and want to do better in order to do better. No one else can do it for them. I have seen felons make comebacks and become rich, but they did the work themselves. No one did it for them.

Making Homelessness illegal.... as if it's a lifestyle choice. Something folks do willingly that politicians consider obscene or abhorrent. It's not a choice. Sad that politicians don't get that.

The best way to prevent homelessness is to give them a roof over their head and to hire them and give them a job before it becomes a problem. Now while you are still funding them, they are still productive members of society and giving back.

Safe zones around the city to camp for work. And bike and trailer programs so people can keep there stuff safe. And with them with out it getting stolen. And then even worse off then when you have a tent. I've have found having a cargo trailer did it for me. Unfortunately some one from Los Angeles moved to AZ. So when I got up the money for a car. And to build a cargo bicycle trailer in AZ. They stole it because of them stealing out there. So put me right back on the street, plus my cargo camp trailer for my bike. So at least I finished it. No when I go to a part of town, or new town I can take it on any bus, trolley, train or car to that place I could get work at. So you see it is needed very much.change drug laws.again also..hard time for smoking hard drugs..ten year in jail or a program in the system. Ten years it took me to stop.qorrying about sounds in my head because people stalk you to repeat hate at you. So you'll hear it in your head. And you won't be able to tell if they're there or not. So when then come and hurt you, you don't know when it's coming. These are the people on the streets right now. Bad in San Diego.. Haven't had a problem in L.A. but I'm sure it happening. Um Seattle had some too. So yeah these people are mostly black men, straight and some gay's do it to try and get a straight guy to be with them.

    Stop blaming the people

He doesn’t “lack the resources” he’s lying to make himself a victim. HE CHOOSES TO NO LONGER PUT IN EFFORT TO GET BACK TO HIS GOOD LIFESTYLE BC HE IS EXTORTING THE PUBLIC RESOURCES THAT OCCASIONALLY COME TO HELP THEM AND LIKES THIS NEGATIVE ATTENTION. Long term homeless people thrive off of negative attention and LOVE DOING INTERVIEWS for narcissistic reasons. Stop believing that they’re good natured or just “fell on tough times” millions of people are homeless in America not by circumstance alone, but by not being willing to be held accountable for their actions and improving relationships that could secure them at least an address and possibly help with clothing/a job. I’m so sick of seeing all of these people in the comments feed into their deception and manipulation. If he was an auditor then he should be forced to go back to doing at least that and then maybe switch careers when he’s stable.

Yes, many people are just 1 paycheck away from financial disaster, and may end up on the streets. But the majority of homeless are dealing with addiction and mental illness and cannot function in society. Cities like San Francisco put many in apartments at the start of covid, and they were so grateful they tore up their apartments and sold anything that wasn't nailed down. A total nightmare for landlords. You can provide "help" but if they don't really want it, they do not have the right to crap all over the sidewalks and walk down the street naked. Reagan set this up by dictating that the federal gov won't pay for mental health hospitalizations between the ages of 21 and 64. Like there isn't an issue in this age range...

I think shelters need to be mandated, after being forced to be financially accountable, have a program to assist with resources and drug rehab involvement.
But just living in tents publicly will never be accepted by the non homeless and should not be.
Its dangerous, dirty, and brings home values & lifestyle down. Folks pay taxes for a clean safe community and access to beaches, lands, etc where tent cities thrive.
Not to mention tent cities seems to me to do little to nothing to move anyone from the streets back into regulated safe community and this is really needed: especially for women.

I think this was a very good interview showing that anyone can become homeless an just how those who still got money to maintain their dignity looks down on others as if they are doing anything like this men said well it's very difficult when they don't provide the proper resources for those who are in need.I think as much tax that is taking out of people checks the government can do something to provide shelter just like tax dollars are taken out to feed those locked up in prison they can take tax dollars from residents to house homeless person in hotels to where those who do work wouldn't see pan handling anymore not saying he do but they wanted to just share that thought we as American citizens pay taxes to feed those locked up in prison why can they just take a few more dollars from all those residents in each city to assist with places they can go.If people buy a pack of cigarettes everyday that got jobs but are just fustrated then I feel it should be something concerning taxes from every resident that could help pay towards like a hotel building that's specific for people in his situation that can get themselves together to then find a job an then be able to have money saved to move into their own apartment or place of living.Thats just a thought that cross my mind we get taxes taken out to feed those that are in prison but cant get building to house the homeless it's not like the hotel will not be getting money that's what many hotels do for fire victims an flood victims for i believe two months for free plus the people I those situations get like a 2000.00 dollars debit card to assist them while either they are seeking work so it's still Difficult then but at least they got a better chance at improving there homeless situations just my own personal opinion I been homeless myself an it's really hard but I had to stay in the shelter in Dallas called the bridge I think it's one of the best homeless shelters that really support everyone all walks of life from those with addictions, just got out of jail,18 year old runaways, prostitutes whom needed counseling it really was like a multicultural type of homeless shelter I never seen any shelter be ran the way it's organized I wish you could do some interviews with those who stay at the place called the bridge it's a very well organized facility even for those with mental Illness they got a MetroCare clinic established at that shelter an security guards that works there for people protection it helps mostly single person an it truly helped me to get back on my feet I remember I has false charges put on my criminal record an the Judge since I was homeless ordered me out of that shelter to live in a group home until I completed the mental health jail diversion program so if they make shelters work like that I think it would help more people but I believe the Mayor is involved with having that shelter it gives those who get it of jail somewhere to go start they life back over they even had people who was just paying off tickets work with volunteering with the homeless to walk down tje street with 30 gallon black garbage to pick up trash so the downtown residents didn't feel as threaten with the homeless cleaning up the area where they lived along the streets I just felt like sharing my testimony some what when I use to be homeless as well

I Cant say for other countries but here in US, With all the resources and spaces we have here in US, the amount of new billionaires every year, No one should be homeless. It should be our given right as a human to have a shelter. It should be consider an essential and free to everyone of US citizen. The housing is more and more UNaffordable every year, the number of homelessness is just going to increase. The gap between the rich and the poor will become bigger and bigger and bigger until one day, there will just be Rich ppl and Poor ppl left. No more middle class.
