What's crazy is that Star Ocean 2 is universally considered the best of them, and one of the great all-time PS1 JRPGs.....and is the only one not available for modern consoles.
I know it was released on the PSP, as I have a copy for both the PS1 and PSP.
there is a version available for ps4, however, it is only available in japan.
i know people like to talk about remaking games and such if any star ocean was to be remade it would be star ocean 2 and would love to play it.
I think Resonance of Fate is Tri-Ace at its finest in the aspect of innovation.
Story wise it is, game mechanics wise its clunky and difficult to play.

Critically underrated game. Such a gem. Loved it on X360.
It's pretty fun, I've only played 8 or so hours so far. If only the pc version had better performance I would have played even more already
Played it on ps3 but then decided to get on ps4 because I sold my ps3 and wanted to play it again, I got the platinum trophy for the 4k/HD edition on ps4, loved it still want to go back sometime on harder difficulty, I really liked the funny moments it had, was my sense of humour.
lol I had guessed that as well although I love the game. I'm still hoping for a sequel.
The customization (costume) for each character was quite big for a JRPG. 😁
I almost cried when you said Star Ocean 2 is the best of the Star Oceans, and you're right- it's not even up for debate.
I grew up playing Till the end of time, but man I have replayed A second story so many times.
I would pay premium price for the remake to port to Switch like First Departure did. Such a great game.

Resonance of Fate's combat system really isn't convoluted or "hard to understand" in my opinion, but it's incredibly unique so it requires some initial time investment. In my experience it really doesn't take more than a few hours of concentration to understand it pretty well, so I feel like you're really missing out on that one by not putting in the effort to understand it better. I think it's one of tri-Ace's best combat systems and easily one of their best games. The music, style, combat system, humor, and presentation really come together to build one of the most unique JRPGs in the last few generations. Extremely underappreciated title.

Agreed as well, I loved Resonance of Fate combat system, characters, music, story, it's a unique game.
Love Infinite Undiscovery on my X360, it's really a hidden gem just like it's title, no one discovered it
I know Resonance Of Fate is a Tri Ace game (my only game from them) and I quite enjoyed it. Sad to see it's the worst in your opinion, I know it's a hard and convoluted game but so far it's been pretty alright. You have to play by its rules though or else you get rekt over and over.
Resonance of fate was quite interesting, you'll never see any other rpg like it but imo it lacks the exploration and quite short for a tri ace game. I really like the weapon upgrade mechanism but yeah it's not for everyone

@Ainz Own Goal you basically have to run long lines right next to the enemy hitting them with scratch damage until you can almost one shot them with pistols.
Jumping in the air and raining bullets when next to the enemy is an ideal way to shoot like 8-10 times in one turn.
The problem with SO Integrity and Faithlessness was the lack of traditional cutscenes and dialog character portrait close ups while they talk, otherwise it was a fun game for me
No, the problem is that it's a SO game, and thus had to be compared to the rest of the series. As a game on it's own merits, it's slightly below average to decent. As a SO game it's lazily-produced garbage and barely recognizable as being part of the series. There really wasn't even much of a point in calling it SO since they removed or butchered so many of the elements that one would expect from such a game.

Yeah because I think Tri-Ace either was lazy or rushed SO5 projects while how dare they used little girl as cannon fodder during entire of the game ?!. SO5 is such short game since SO series usually 100+ hours ,but this game can be done within 20 hours or so.
the seraphic gate is one of my favorite parts about tri ace games. especially in the valkyrie profile series where characters there are totally unhinged and spout random nonsense
My fav Tri Ace game is Star Ocean 2.
The plot twist is what is most divisive about End of Time. Aside from that, it's a gorgeous game with a fantastic soundtrack and one of the few that raised the bar on early voice acting.
The twist hurt, but what I hated most if that running out of MP kills you and foes can do MP damage. Suddenly, your tanks drop in one hit...
I don't see what the big deal is with the twist. I thought it was actually very creative and refreshing instead of the usual endings we get in most jrpgs.
Some say it ruined the series, but it was my first Star Ocean and it didn't have any negative impact on the games I played after it. 🤷♀️

I played till the end of time about a year ago and man do I love that game. Cliff is really cool. Your #1 choice is very well deserved as well.
I think Lightning Returns should count. The plot involves a woman collecting souls for the afterworld in a Norse Mythology setting with attacks mapped to each face button...it's literally Valkyrie Profile.
If only it played like VP though.
So glad to see Radiata Stories on this list. So many characters to recruit even Valkyrie as a secret character. Each NPC had their own daily routines so they were always on the move instead of staying stationary. Plus has to be played thru multiple times to get every character. Story was great, gameplay was great, was all around underrated.
Radiata Stories is amazing. One other aspect to the game I really enjoyed was how the main town felt alive with the NPCs all having their own schedules and routines. At first I thought it was overwhelming, but in the end I got really into learning about the town's areas and inhabitants. I used to know where each npc was at any time during the day. I think you could recruit a lot of them as well. I need to play the game again since I haven't played it since its release.
Man, this really makes me wanna go back and play the Star Ocean series. SO2 is probably top ten for me on best RPGs. I really wish they'd released them on the PSN store.
"Tri" means "three"... as in Triangle (Three angles).... It's pronounced "try". So yeah, they called themselves Tri-Ace cause they are the three aces.
A fun Fact: in SO2, one of Ashton's Moves is actually _called_ "tri-Ace". Nothing like inserting the name of your company into the game as an actual move that is voiced.

@@Asmodea01 That much I don't recall. It's been quite awhile. All I remember is him screaming "Oh the almighty Tria.... TRI-ACE!!" over and over again until I promptly unequipped the skill because hot dang, him pausing battle every few seconds got annoying fast lol.

"unique" is one way to describe the Star Ocean 3 plot twist, I've heard it called a lot of other things 😋
I think you can get 1st departure on ps3. Not 100% certain though. Glad I still have my ps1 SO2 discs bit and I wish I still had Valkyrie Profile.
I enjoyed this video, tri ace was one of my favorite rpg developer from back in the day. you should consider doing a working design or a Nis America next.

I loved Tri-ace back in my ps1 days, their games had amazing secret/end content, VP is still in my top 5
Loved ALL of these that I've had a chance to play. Still waiting for Valkyrie Profile 3.... even VP2 was absolutely gorgeous with the resolution bumped up via emulation, so I can only imagine it could be like with today's tech. Hope they find some way to bring back story-based Einherjar leveling and afterstories like VP1 though... that was one of my favorite elements, but had so much more potential, but instead was GONE in VP2.
There is no good or bad game. what there is is experiences. and each one will have their own.

Resonance of fate is a lot better than most games on this list IMO, people just need the will and capacity to invest 30min to learn the combat mechanics.
And then fall asleep as they understand that the game revealed all of it's cards in the first hour.
@@cidlunius1076 Not really, you cannot beat this game only knowing how the combat works, you have to master it to some degree, that's one of the fun parts of the game, trying and improving the guns and the battle strategies. You can learn the basic rules of pool in half and hour but you can't play well only knowing that.
too bad about fate of resonance I love that game but valkyrie profile games are honestly the best in the tri ace library

Thanks for the love to my favorite RPG dev! Feel like your preference of the VP games comes down to what you value - what makes the original special for me is how it can make you care more about a character in 5 minutes than Final Fantasy can in 50 hours, and 2 doesn't have that aspect at all. i do agree that VP2 is mechanically the most impressive game they ever put out though!

Sadly Anamnesis got shut down in JP after a good run. The NA version didn't even reach a year since it was so F2P friendly and Square couldn't monetize it like mad.
But, I really enjoyed 5, as the combat system was fun to see all the cast in combat, and not just a few at once.
I also enjoy Star Ocean Last Hope more than Star Ocean 3. The 'twist' in Star Ocean 3 just infuriated me personally.
I hated that too. but I still prefer 3, though.

Not gameplay likewise ,but I do agree that SO3's story plot may have cause the fans unpleasure. and was similar to Matrix. I prefer S)3 because I am no fan of SO4's characters and don't really like battle system.

I really wish they released Star Ocean: Second Departure on the switch like they did for Star Ocean: First Departure.
Damn Valkyrie Profile Covenant Of The Plume got very low on the list, wasn't expecting that, especially since Erick likes strategy RPG's. I don't even like Strategy RPG's at all and Covenant Of The Plume is the only one that I managed to enjoy and I enjoyed it so much that I played through it multiple times to get all the endings and played through some of the Seraphic Gate. It's a lot easier if you send everyone on your first playthrough as you can carry equipment and plume abilities over in new game +. Don't feel pressured to not use that plume, it is there for a reason, if you get stuck, use that bad boy to give yourself an edge, you need to get all 3 endings anyway to unlock the bonus dungeon so take advantage of the plume!
CotP is real gem and I can only agree since I also played through the game mutiple times and did a portion of the serpahic gate. The funny thing is, all of this happened 10 years ago and I can´t remember going through all 3 routes. A few weeks ago I tried to revisit the game because I thought that I had only finished 1 route and was surprised to find a file with a midway save through seraphic gate - videogame amnesia seems to be a real thing
tri-Ace in japanese is writtenトライエース (to-ra-i ee-su), so it's actually pronounced as "try".
I think that even the Japanese themselves misunderstood the pronunciation of "Tri" in their native language. Even in the game Monster Hunter 3 Tri, they relapse into the same problem. For a Westerner, the acceptable pronunciation would be 'tree' from the word "Triple". For a native spanish speaker, the same pronunciation also applies indeed.

That post-game mockery of the main cast in Valkyrie Profile 2 absolutely killed me. I died laughing.
Star Ocean Till the End of Time or Second Story both deserve to be remake as long it's not rushed like how they did to Star Ocean 5. I love Star Ocean The Last Hope but my complain is that I can't switch targets which why they decided to only does manual target instead auto target.
Cant agree more, we need SO3 again, anything else after that did NOT feel like start ocean at all.
If you can read katakana it is very easy to find out the pronounciation of company names and other terms. And it is completely correct to spell it "try ace" because it is written as "torai e-su" in Japanese. :)

tri-ace games have mostly been published by square enix but in the case of resonance of fate they were not involved. good video, many game i didnt knew about.
Star ocean the last hope is awesome! It’s one of my favorite jrpgs on PS3.
It's easily the best battle system of the star Ocean series.
It was great, i loved it but still couldve been better. Soo many missed possibilities. SOTST still better for me.
Erick, have you seen the game Fallen Legion Revenants? It's an indie game published by NIS that clearly built its battle system from the VP template. I'm a huge fan of it and was curious if you tried it.

I have recently been playing the SNES version of Star Ocean, thanks to a translation and I cannot believe that the game touches such a current theme as a pandemic. Jeez!, Tri-Ace was ahead of its time by almost 25 years!
The original Star Ocean for the Super Famicom was so exotic to me that immediatly catch my attention (very different than the common RPGs and suspiciously very similar to Tales of Phantasia for the reasons that now we all know) way back in the 90's. Since then I've been closelly following tri-Ace games and made my favorite RPG dev. Also made me a big fan of Motoi Sakuraba's music. Great video man 👍
Currently I'm on disc two of the 1999 star ocean the second story. My team is renas story with rena claude celine Ashton dias and noel so far I'm about to end up getting chisato. I'm literally playing the ps1 version on my ps3 and I'd honestly say that even though it came out in 1999 it's still one of the very best RPGs I've ever played and I even believe it's better than almost anything that has come out since. Definitely a game that will stand the test of time. Catching Bill's up right now but when I am able I'm getting a psp to get the remake of star ocean 1.

To be honest you can't really go wrong with tri ace. Personally I had a BLAST with resonance of fate. I thought it was sooooo silly how every time you shoot or attack your character flips around like its crouching tiger hidden dragon. I think you do as many flips as bullets you shoot LOL.

Till the End of Time's plot twist made it a very very memorable game.
For the wrong reason. I loved the game until that plot twist. It was ridiculous!
2nd story is one of my all time favs. I have 2nd evolution for the psp. But it’s not the same without the English translation errors with the characters battle dialogues
The problem I have with Tri-Ace's later games were their lack of post game content. Star Ocean Second Story will always take that #1 spot. You can spend hundreds of hours (not including endings) playing it and still have not discovered everything. The post game Pyramid dungeon was like a whole different game itself. It was freaking insane! PS1 Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean 3 comes the closest.
Every game after, didn't have that level of depth.
I've played a little bit of Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean 1, and I'm enjoying the latter a lot more so far.
The last JRPG that I played was Exist Archive, a PS4 Tri-Ace game.
I liked it, recommend if you like Valkyrie Profile.

Am I the only one who loves Star Ocean 5? 😭 it wasn’t overly bloated like the 3rd and 4th entires, and was really fun to me. I never had any troubles with the difficulty, or camera...

Infinite Undiscovery was one of my favorite games and the only 1 I got all the achievements on the 360

@@theflyingninja1 no they do, they all use symbology and the same spells, they are all connected by the seraphic gate, and i think infinite undiscovery there are is some cross over with the plot and the post game.
Resonance Of Fate is still my favorite steampunk style RPG. The game had a very unique and "challenging" fighting system and took a long time to finish for me (90 hours). It ranks up in the top 3 Tri-Ace games for me. But Star Ocean TTEOT and Infinite Undiscovery and Valkyrie Profile still beat it out with better pacing and streamlined combat systems.
My 2 favorite games of tri-ace, valkyrie profile 2 this is amazing a masterpiece my second favorite game of all time and star ocean till of time another masterpiece a little underrated in my opinion.

I had to choose between two games back in the day to buy with my meager allowance Valkyrie Profile and Suikoden2 I picked Valkyrie Profile and bought a guide🥰 Love it the portraits were so cool for the characters😀 “Come to me Dark Warriors Battle Awaits Us!”was always my favorite line in the game
I don't really remember the pronunciation, BUT, I remember that Chisato from SO2 have an skiil that she call's Tri-Ace, mayba that is the right way to say the name of the company. Great video, thx!
Frontier Gate was missing in this list, one of the best psp jrpgs and was made by Tri-Ace.

I bought Valkyrie Profile 2 last year because of how good you said the game was. Luckily I bought it then for around $20. Now it's worth more than what I would want to pay.

0n SO5 they really phoned it in on the world building too. This entry should have expanded on the galaxy with different worlds. There also werent any real options for OP gear in the bonus dungeon. Infinite undiscovery felt more like a star ocean game than S05 in gameplay and world building. S02 was easily the best in the series, maybe even a top 10 JRPG of all time.
Awesome list! I tried to get into Valkyrie profile, really did, but got to a point where the fire just faded. I seem to have that issue with many of tri aces series. Same thing with star ocean second story. That’s my favorite tri ace entry and although I’ve finished it once, I never got that feeling to play it again. Unlike Xenogears or FF7 or 8 where I’ve started it multiple times and every time is awesome. Awesome video though!
you've had most of my favorite tri-Ace games here, it's a real shame that only Star Ocean the last hope and Resonance of Fate are the only ones with an HD/4D remaster though, I would love to see the other three Star Oceans with that especially #2. Radiata Stories though really suffered from being dropped just months before the PS 3 launched though, but honestly it's one I'd love to see on Steam the most (the play style was great to let little kids play it, mainly the under 12 set) next to all the Star oceans with that HD remaster.

Well I heavily disagree for Resonance of Fate, but I mostly agree with the rest, I especially agree that Star Ocean 2 and the 2 first Valkyrie Profile are the top 3.
My few gripes with the 5th star ocean is that I couldn’t put people on standby, could hardly see after characters started getting higher sill moves and I felt things at one point where happening a little too quickly. It’s okay.
Switch to the character in battle and hit down on the d pad to put them in manual. Then they'll only do what you control them to

Star ocean 2 has 80+ ending ? its a fav jrpg and never knew that im guessing its base on who ends up with who ? i usually just play the relationships normally which is why i never notice

My pick would be Valkyrie profile ds. I actually liked how the difficulty jped randomly. Felt idk...normal to what real life would be XD unpredictable keeps things interesting. I finished it a few times. Tho I took my time. Saved alot, and quite a few times I would restart from a save point lol. Sacrificing my teammates to become god like and the feather skills gained and the music and animation for each weapon plus the dark story. Man...it is my fav rpg hands down, outside of old school Pokemon lol
I have to admit when Star Ocean the Second Story showed up and you had a moment of silence I was thinking that that's all that needed to be said. But then you said that it's not up for debate I totally choked. Yes! Best Star Ocean game ever.

Star Ocean 2 is probably my favorite game ever. I played it so much. Even won an art contest in middle-school for drawing Ashton.
If there's one game i wish i could erase from my memory and redo blindly over and over its the original Valkyrie Profile though. Just the story/ambiance/music/Characterization, everything in it is an absolute masterpiece and emotional roller coster.
I heavily disagree VP2 is better than the first. Going 3D didn't do anything for it and most of the charm of the original was gone. Story was ok but kind of predictable in some way considering we already knew Lezard from the first game.

Valkyrie profile 2 perfected the Combat system VP Lenneth Lacked. It's a real time but also turn based system. It has the classic tri-Ace difficulty spike but also allows the players some ways to overcome them, though it requires grinding. The story is also excellent and it's as cynical as the first game with a twist of great tragedy. The story is demanding a sequel but sadly there's still none. VP2 is the greatest RPG that never was.
