Is shocking how little the JRPG library is on the PS4 (and PS3) compared to the PS2 and PS1 ones.
well, its mostly because the passage to HD made most japanese company gone bankrupt during the 360 and early ps3 era... north american dev teams were hitting homeruns and were using realistic graphics that became popular while the japanese were more varied yet, less apreciated.
@@charlestrudel8308 I have also always thought that JRPGs with 3D models lose all their soul. Perhaps with the exception of Nier, FF, DQ and Persona where the artistic style is more defined. All the rest look very generic.
@@franciscobutte i would say that you are completely right, Falcom and its trail series has a generic character design indeed for example. but thats because the company doesnt have that much budget and is concentrating its effort on something that no one else is doing, sadly, players wants graphics above all else and so, we have started to get just that above all else too.
@@charlestrudel8308 i think the cold steel games look amazing on ps4, especially considering how huge the games are. just started the final dungeon in part 4 and 4 looks especially good. i could care less about realistic graphics if i can have rpgs that huge, with that insane level of character and world development.
@@Jack_80 the overall design is great, but that kind of graphic could work on a 360 or a ps3 if the company had more budget. so yeah, falcom is limited by budget on the graphic front. Not that i care, i find it great as is. (keep in mind that my old pc that cant run most game 2017 and later can easily run cold steel 3 and 4 at 60 fps / 1080p resolution.)
Man, you have a pretty interesting content. Keep the good work and continue to bring us the jowels of jrpgs.
Nice! I've seen a few of these before but others were completely unknown to me. I'll add them to my collection.
Great video Erick, always love to learn about new jrpgs to try to collect if i can. take care!!
thanks for the video 💛✨ I really wanted to play first three games. Now I'm definitely gonna try them
Been waiting for a list like this. I love finding hidden gems and really been wanting more ps4 games.
One thing I love about compile heart is that some of their games have interesting battle systems. Is good for me because I suck at telling if a story is good so gameplay tends to be my main thing.
Damn, I haven't heard of any of these except Crystar but I haven't tried it yet. Thanks for your videos, they help inform me of what I missed and want to check out
PS4 has many JRPGs available, even if most of them arent platform specific to just Playstation. I'd also add Blue Reflection and Lock's Quest as well as very obscure or generally unknown. Lots of good stuff in here. Crystar has gotten expensive and The Witch and The Hundred Knight 2 is I believe VERY low print and getting expensive as well. Great list of options here!
Hey Erick, great video!
After seeing that dog, I have to call the legitimacy of Crystar's entire plot into question!
How can you be forever sad with a fluff monster like that sitting around waiting for cuddles?!
Keep up the great work Erick!
And go hug a dog! ;-P
Good stuff! I’ll definitely try Crystar first, it looks extremely good
Got Dark Rose Valkyire and Demon Gaze II on the cheeeeep at Gamestop during one of their sales. Glad to see you say nice things about them I have yet to play em.
Glad to say I own a good portion of the games on this list.
Ya know, Idea Factory gets a lot of flack, but they really have stepped up their game in the PS4 era
Love the Summon Night series after playing 5 on the PSP. Still have yet to play 6 but it looks great
im impressed, some of these I legit never even heard the title of. Crystar looks very intriguing to me
wish more JRPGs would try art styles like Tick-Tock Travelers instead of the generic 2D anime art for conversations, emotionless 3D models in battle style that so many are. Feels like the Okage of the PS4.
some of these games look good, thanks for the video man
You gotta make a part 2 of this video!!!
I was just looking at mistover. It looks so good. Definitely giving that one a looksie
been waiting for this topic for a while
After seeing this video I'll probably grab Lost Child. I was always on the fence due to its art style, but it looks like a cool game.
I got a recommendation from some guy on 4chan. I said I want a game similar to SMT Soul Hackers, and this was his recommendation. Bought it (for the Switch), finished it, love it!
Love your videos
I just noticed that I have not many jrpgs or rpgs for my consoles but for handheld (3ds, DS etc) have tons and tons of rpgs :'p
I knew for a fact that Crystar would be here. This game is a fun time and stands out among other action RPG's.
Watching this makes me wanna go back and finish Crystar.
I have some of the games on this list, but for the ones I'm missing, I'll definitely check them out because of this video! thanks!
Out of all the games on this list, Crystar has the best story/lore/world building, if you're into it's themes. Collecting all the memoirs of the dead might be a pain in the butt to do, but reading all of them after I finished the game, and all it's endings turned the game from a 6/10 to a solid 9/10.
@@demariogoss9732 I reY I really liked the first playthrough. But I was turned off by learning I had to play a large portion of the game a second, third and I think even FOURTH time to unlock the rest of the story. A lot of the reviews said on top of that that the payoff wasn't worth it. So I gave up. Almost picked it up again before I remembered that. Still, it was an interesting game and I'm glad I did give it a try.
@@LoneWolfAudio0524 Yeah. Not gonna lie, that part almost had me quit the game until I started basically skipping 99% of the enemies, and going to the boss.
The game is fun until it forces you into a situation where you have to deal with it's repetitive nature to 100% complete the story.
The game did get a tad repetitive here and there with the long stages, and the enemies and bosses were not really all that challenging. Heck if it weren't for the great music and story I would have given up, worth it though imo.
Summon night need to revive its swordcraft history saga
Yeah
There's a reason why Crystar is so expensive! It's good. For you collectors out there, go for the PAL version and save some money.
I snagged the american version on play asia for cheap, I was surprised it was still there when I bought it. Really hard to find game.
Glad I grabbed that one when I did that's for sure!
Is it really that expensive? I literally have an unopened copy on my shelf.
Ok, so it isn't unopened (damn you Gamestop) but nobody has ever played the disc so, near mint I guess?
@@mightymanatee5342 Yeah it's worth quite a bit even opened. I think later down the line this game will explode in value. Not 100% sure though, just speculating.
Definitely good obscure picks. I have every one of these, except Summon Night 6 & the last digital one you mentioned. I recall when Summon Night 6 was pre-orderable on Gajin's site, but I already had too many things pre-ordered at the time, or I'd have that, too. That looks OK. Of course, they're all on my backlog, so I've yet to play them (except The Lost Child & Demon Gaze 2, which I put aside). I might check out Crystar soon, as that looks good, & maybe Witch & 100-Knight 2 & Dragon Star Varnir.
Crystar is a very good game, but it's a solid "play for the story, not the gameplay" affair, so make sure to go into it with this in mind.
Dragon Star Varnir is also a very good game, but it has a REALLY annoying micro managing mechanic, that will lock you out of some endings if failed. It also permanently locks out one of the playable characters, if you pick what seems like the sensible option in one of the visual novel segments.
@@user-xu2pi6vx7o - indeed. I'm finer with that. Getting into it, actually.
how do you find out about some of these games? i always find there's at least one game in each of your vids i've never heard of
You can't hate those weird JRPG names tho: Dragon Star Varnir, One Way Heroics...
I always wonder how they find them. They're so cool even if they don't make any sense! Like "Infinite Undiscovery".
Ah yes the dinner dinner game
Crystar and Dragenstar Vanir are great Games. Dark Rose Valkyrie only played a bit yet but seems to be Fun. But i wonder that there is no Akiba Strip 2 or AKibas Beat on the list. Both are great games and now we got an Remake from the first AkibaStrip Game for Ps4 and Switch.
Dragon Star Varnier is pretty expensive in the UK and Summon Nights 6 can only be bought digitally in the UK, unless you play imports.
A couple of those games I own Crystar and Demon Gaze but i've yet to play either game game yet.
Got the giant collectors box for Summon Night 6. Took a year for it to be shipped from when I ordered it from Gajinworks. Huge amount of stuff just like their old releases. Not a bad game although getting the platinum is a real pain.
Dark rose Valkyrie,i know that artstyle anywhere! thats the same artist who did Oh! my Goddess! never thought i'd see this in a game!
Its a shame most of these are only on PS4/5 though but thats in the title.
Btw, i tried to find The Lost Child on Steam but could't find it, another name perhaps?
I did find Mistover on Steam. might give it go if i truly have nothing else to do but considering the massive amount of awesome games coming out, i still got plenty to play.
I have most of these, all of which are pretty decent. Two that I'm surprised weren't on the list was Xuan Yuan Sword : Gate of the Firmament and Sword and Fairy 6.
I hadn't heard of those two so i'll be looking into them. Thanks for bringing them up!
@@Lazrael32 no problem. Apparently Xuan Yuan Sword is actually a spin off of a long running series of RPGs that were only in China/ Hong Kong, and Sword and Fairy 6 is part of that series as well. The series itself was often compared as a "Dragon warrior type series" , but also has a lot of Chinese folklore/ historical fiction type elements involved. They are subtitled in english, which I don't mind, but some might care about that. These two titles were the first to ever be released on a console btw. The rest, from what I understand, were PC only ( mainly due to mainland China had banned consoles from early Nintendo era up until the release of the Ps4) I hope you enjoy them if you decide to check them out. :)
@@Disfrigginguy sounds really interesting. Chinese folklore is usually a lot of fun! Thanks again!
Xuan Yuan Sword : Gate of the Firmament looks pretty good. It was also released for PS4?
@@mangasystem7011 indeed it was... it was released sometime in 2017. Incidentally Xuan Yuan Sword 7 is releasing next week.
I played Dark Rose Valkyrie and like I thought it was fun. The combat made the game for me.
Is number 2 really that easy? I’m really curious to try it, it looks “different”.
I really want to have Crystar in physical, but it's really expensive now. Such a shame.
I know dark rose valkyrie is on sale right now~ I just picked it up.
It's a great game that's also very hard with a deep combat system.
I wanna play summon night 6 but I grew up on summon night swordcraft story on gba and like thr battle systems to Don match up and it doesn't seem like the general tone does either so it's hard to convert myself
Summon night 6 isn't very good.
I'd definitely add Metal Max Zero as I never heard anyone talk about that game (it's not that good, so that might be why). Also Zanki Zero, but that is a little more popular I think.
can you do a PC game specific list?
Summon Night 6 and Dark Rose Valkyrie are two I'm always trying to find here in Brazil but it's impossible since it's not the kind of game people around here play. So I'm considering importing them. Though I did play a bit of SN6 in PSVita, and I must say I found SN5 to be better, idk why.
Destiny Connect Tick Tock Travelers looks very nice Game that I am going to got on my Nintendo Switch Thank erick for the recommendation 🙂
hope one day summon night 6 come to pc, in my country his price is more expensive than a release game psn version , the physical is the price of 3 release games sad
got a copy of summon night 6 on vita
I am convinced Dark Rose Valkyrie is a comedy, i was laughing through the entire story and the interogation system is a total joke, i love that the guide online says the best way to solve it is to save and then take photos of the clues you get and the reload until you figure it out. I just gave up and accepted my fate that is the bad ending. Also i put 90% of my stats into strength and apparently optimal leveling is putting 100% into strength.
I tried Dark Rose Valkarie. I couldn't get ove the fact that the weapons look ripped straight outta God Eater XD
Only one I played on here was Dark Rose Valkyrie. Mixed reviews probably is fair for the game. The real issue is that all the things you see: the day/night, the traveling, the battles, the social simulations, quests, and especially the traitor sequences aren't very well executed, and they don't exactly synergize well either. Fighting is pretty good though, I will agree. Story wasn't that good either imo.
It also has fanservice that wouldn't be out of place in an ecchi series. Damage to your armor makes it come off, so your characters could be fighting in their underwear. That could turn people off who aren't a fan of the extra fanservice.
The best thing about the game is it's seemingly always on sale for 5-10 bucks on PSN. And it's by no means bad, just feels like a lot of wasted potential.
It's always on sale cuz nobody wants to buy it full price. Dark Rose Valkyrie is only a bad game because it's combat is poorly explained, and trying to understand it is far more frustrating compared to just button mashing with it. They've made complicated systems before, but they were very refined, and extremely fun when understood like Cross Edge, or Record of Agarest war, but this game ain't it chief.
Erick, I already put on my notifications up and I got it late. I dont know why.
I need to finish Crystaaar
That's what i'm talking about! Thank you Erick! My wallet is ready
Man Dark Rose Valkyrie was great, auper hard and annoying to get specific endings but the art and coice acting was fantastic. Would love to play more games with similar artstyle
The devs made more games ike it for PS4 like Fairy Fencer and that idol one.
@@triniking1234 I played Fairy Fencer, imo its one of their best games :) But the idol one never held my attention and it was overly grindy even for me, im not into idols anyhow.
summon knight 6 is still rare it's not even on the ps4 store. at least it's not showing up when i search for it.
Im really interested in Dark Rose Valkyrie now.... Now where have i seen that artstyle before.... Btw thanks for the list
@Minh Le you mean Kousuke Fujishima? No wonder it's so familiar, with me a big Tales of fan
Friendly advice: if you play only for the story you'll have zero problems. If you want trophies, though, get some pills ready.
He is most well known for his Manga series: You're Under Arrest and Ah! My Goddess(which is my favorite manga/anime series of him). Kosuke Fujishima is a legend :)
@@gorillabuttons6731 ah, it's okay cuz im not concerned much about trophy
@@gorillabuttons6731 I remember having my doubts about the final boss on very hard, but then without grinding and with some buffs I oneshot him with the protagonist using Zorc Mission in the first round. Also on easy you won't be able to get 5 stars with all the girls in one playthrough because the rewards for missions dedicated to girls "favor" are also reduced.
Have you ever done a video with Yakuza: Like a Dragon?
I like that game. But it seems like instead of using it as a spinoff series it was so popular that all yakuza games will now have the rpg gameplay. Can't we just do both? Sigh.
@@Lazrael32 Well, I think I've heard that they're giving Judgment a sequel which will have a more similar gameplay stye to the original Yakuza titles.
The Lost Child wasn't released on Steam.
Dragon Star Varnir... the game where, not only could I barely see the enemy models because they kept blending into the background but the artstyle was inconsistent, the story was illogical, the battle system was "experimental" like most Compile Heart games (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I didn't really enjoy it)...
On top of all that, you're punished for fighting battles by a particular system that tracks "time" based on how many battles you fight. So, in a similar but even more extreme way to ANOTHER DUMPSTER FIRE OF A GAME INVOLVING DRAGONS, you have to try and finish the game by avoiding every optional battle. If you want to get the "true ending" anyway.
Yes: I did do that, in case you're wondering.
Correction, The Lost Child was not released on Steam
Mistover looked interesting, but on Steam it got rather bad reviews. The worst part is that a year ago (june 2022) the game was removed from all digital stores so it's not possible to get it anymore unless you already purchased it before.
Crystar was okay, I liked it but it got very repetitive.
Dragon Vanir was great look wise. I enjoyed Charlotte's story from it tho
Yeah, someone shouted out Mistover, cool. I think I'm in the extreme minority that likes that game.
It's punitive and grindy and possible to ruin a playthrough... so yeah, I get it.
On the other hand the combat system is basically Darkest Dungeon x Radiant Historia. Which if that sounds good to you, first of all good job, second maybe try it out.
Just keep in mind the whole rogue-lite adjacent dungeon crawler thing, which again, also probably of niche tastes.
Also; Crystar does look interesting too. Maybe I'll give that a go.
Am currently playing Dark Rose Valkyrie and dang it that game is brutal, it doesnt help that the dev pretty much abandoned it.
Abondened bruh
The hardness is what makes it so good.
@@buckroger6456 yeah i hate it when rpgs are too easy, with no harder difficulty options. ff7 on ps1 is a perfect example of these. i enjoyed it as a kid when it was my first rpg, but replaying it years later it was overly easy and the only time i ever lost a battle was in the battle arena and maybe once or twice fighting the ruby and emerald weapons. overall it was just way too easy to find it enjoyable.
ff12 was one of my favorites because it was very challenging. i was all excited to buy the remaster to play it again, only to find that challenge had been completely removed from the remaster. it went from being one of the more challenging rpgs i've played to the easiest. in the original no matter how good you set up the auto-battle, when you were fighting bosses you'd have to jump in and manually make moves with your party or you'd die, in the remaster you can set up a basic auto-battle and literally auto-battle your way through the entire game, with no option to play it with the original difficulty. makes me so mad when they do stupid shit like that.
@@Jack_80 and that's what bugs me about a lot of these new jrpgs. I just finished Witch Spring 3 on switch and while I enjoyed the game, it was just stupid easy.
Last year I played Omega Quintet on PS4 and that was beyond old school hard. One of the few games that made me work for the platinum.
Destiny connect plot is really complex and some battles are very hard, i dont think it is for kids.
I'd offer Akiba's Beat to this list. Yeah the dungeons and battles are a little repetative, and the side quests are just "kill this many monsters". The art style cuts lots of corners too. But I found the story really quite interesting, and the characters have a fair bit of personality. It's also fully voiced in English, and to a pretty high standard. I heard it called a porr man's Persona 5. It's super story heavy. Like REALLY story heavy. But if you're into that like I am, it's worth a play.
I gotta disagree. The story was predictable and boring because it literally repeated the same plot point for almost every party member, the gameplay was excessively repetitive, and the characters were more tolerable than actually good. It's the only JRPG that I outright hated and regretted buying. It was also forgettable. I'll give you the part about voice acting, but there's literally nothing else about the game I think is even remotely good.
@@MoostachedSaiyanPrince And that's precisely why I included it. Because that's the reaction I imagine a lot of people had. And it's not that I disagree. But what can I say? It captured my interest, and despite its many shortcomings, I saw it through to the end. I've given up on more highprofile RPGS, so for me that says ... I'm not sure what it says about me actually.
@@LoneWolfAudio0524 My reason for disagreeing that it could get a place on this list or any other list like it as that most of the games on this list can usually be described as pretty good. They have some shortcomings, but are worth playing through despite their faults for the most part. I really don't feel like I can say that for Akiba Beat because it's the only JRPG I came away from and felt a long lasting and scathing hatred for it afterwards. Which is an impressive feat because I also ironically found it fairly forgettable. I pushed through to the end despite realizing that I didn't like it sometime around the 4-5 hour mark and even then, I only beat it out of obligation to get my money's worth out if it as I was pretty broke at the time and was in denial that I'd wasted my money. I would literally never recommend playing this game to anyone under any circumstances. Sure, it is an obscure game, which is the subject is for this list, but the rest of the games are pretty good despite being obscure, while Akiba Beat is obscure because it sucks. It technically fits on the list if you're just going by the title, but it doesn't fit with the other games.
@@MoostachedSaiyanPrince That's the posative power of agency. To like, or dislike whatever one wishes. I felt the same way about Dragon Warrior XI. Tried it twice now and just Can't. And I spent full price on it. And most people would agree it's one of the better RPGS on the system. I got even saltier towards it after finding out it was getting a same console re-release, and that I'd have to pay considerably to upgrade it. Also have not played Persona 5 yet. So maybe I just have a soft spot for the underdog ... or the dead underdog. Either way, I rather thought my suggestion would be buried under all the other comments. I played Akiba's Beat on PS Now. so maybe that helped my disposition towards it.
More recommendations for Xbox please.
Thanks for your videos. All are awesome, I see even the other platforms, because I love RPGs 😁
I’d literally just deleted about four of these from my wish list because it had got out of hand. Time to add them back on...
I know of all of them
Uhhhhh Crystar aside, I wouldn't touch any of these (half of them look like the same game anyway). But Crystar does look interesting, wishlisted that for the future. Never even heard of that one before
Excellent game with a wonderful story!! It can get a little repetitive in the last 3rd of game as you have to repeat the last 3 levels 3 times, each time the story changes, but some people really disliked this aspect. Otherwise I highly recommend it.
Crystar looks Intriguing,,but 1OO$ worth it? :O
i tried number 1, and while i do like rogue dungeon crawlers, like mystery dungeon, the number 1 on this list isn't my thing.
Early Squad
Lost Child is a dungeon crawler? Nice.
It's not very good though
@@Shiro92224 Awww, too bad.
Must not be allowed to post links. My previous comment was removed.
As a neat bit of trivia related to this list, Crystar, with a 9.6 is the highest user rated PS4 game on MetaCritic. It beats out games like Ghost of Tsushima, Witcher III, and God of War.
well the Summon Night series is STILL unknown in the West considering we got only a few games
if that wasn't the case, then the series wouldn't be obscure/unknown lol
the only reason it's obscure/unknown is the fact they barely made any sort of marketing in the West
i just did a search for summon knight 6 on the ps4 store and couldn't find it. unless it's actually spelled night and that's why, pretty sure in his list it said knight though.
Did everyone remembers Ever Oasis? A JRPG that existed on a 3DS anyone?
I have it in my collection. Have not played it.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII on PS4 has heavy RPG elements and NOBODY talks about this game.
Glad i got most of these used. I am certainly not gonna support censorship
I love Crystar to bits, but it is absolutely a mindless hack'n slash.
I broke my Logitech g700's left clicker, from all the mindless clicking in this game.
PC ports still good as PS4 originals as I always played...
Speaking from an outsider to these type of games... I get why a lot of them are 'sleeper' titles. A couple resonated with me, but majority of them I don't think will ever be LEGENDARY sleeper titles like the PS1 Era. There's far too many of these type of games being released for PS4.
With that being said; I'm a HUGE rpg fan and own all the classics for all eras.... but these titles here seem like generic counterparts of what's actually deemed good.
That's my opinion anyways; everyone plays a game differently. But I don't see any of these titles selling for 'used' status for $600 a decade after release personally.
Literally tried to buy crystar on amazon like 2-3 weeks ago from the company for $46. Someone stole my crystar and replaced it with a cheap a** phone case and not the price shot up to $70. I'm fuming and none of my gamestops have it
Be patient and ask your GameStop to check their internal system for copies nearby, also you could punch random zip codes in until you find one and then go to your nearest store and ask them to have it transferred. It took a few weeks but I ended up with 3 copies
@@Nanoha3972 I'm super dumb, I forgot that was an option. Thanks bro
Pretty sure Mistover is a Korean rpg.
It is indeed.
Comment.
None of these games ascend to legendary status. They're all just middling to ok.
Makes me wish for the PS1/PS2-era where classic RPGs were coming at us thick and fast.
Crystar deserves so much better than the gameplay that it offers
Hmm, honestly though some of those games kinda suck, that's why they are not popular. The only real very good games in this list is probably the witch and hundred knight 2, demon gaze 2, and summon night 6. The rest are kinda meh, at least in my opinion. Maybe the lost child is good in some ways as a dungeon crawler but i liked stranger of sword city and demon gaze more and also labyrinth of refrain coven of dusk was a very good dungeon crawler.
Interesting list, but unfortunately I personally think most of these games are pretty mediocre or bad :(
The best one is probably Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics, but the original One Way Heroics on PC is better IMO and MUCH cheaper.
P.S.: Small mistake, The Lost Child was not released on PC
what no metion of the cold steel series boooo boo i say
They're not that unknown, especially not since IV
I enjoyed Dragon Star Varnir but the battle system is one the most boring mechanics I've ever seen. The story ok, graphics ok the system to aquire new skills is great but that battle system is boring asf even with the 3 layers.
Devour is broken. And this game has the most beautiful "bad ending" I've ever seen.
@@gorillabuttons6731 As I said besides the battle system was this a good game, devour is a little broken but idea behind it was pretty creative. The mc is pretty boring but the witches are good especialy the younger ones. I played all ending as well and I agree.
First person square move dungeon crawlers isn't apealing for the vast majority. It's more niche than neptunia games... that's why...
Erick would you make a best hentai rpgs video?
Summon Night 6 is brought down by its horrible english dub though. Its a good game otherwise though.
Nothing wrong with fan service
I played Summon Night 5 and 6...and they were...awful...
Lost Child is just straight up badly designed. There's nothing "hard" about your MC getting one shot with a crit while defending at full health, and there's nothing hard about the other forced character being actually useless because the MP costs versus growth are ridiculous, there's nothing hard about the game having the worst skill acquisition system ever designed. I can't see why this game is on any lists that don't include "worst" in the title.
Also, anybody looking at Summon Night 6 should know that it's a fan service game, in the purest sense of the word. It also heavily spoils other games in the franchise, so yea.
🙃 obscure
It's a shame Sony censored some of these. Better to grab them on PC for the uncensored versions.
Whatsup with all these mediocre fan service bland jrpgs these days? Its diluting the rpg genre
Presumably simple economics. There is enough of a market to make low budget games profitably so developers do it
Thats fair, the big budget realm is far riskier and jrpgs have lots of competition from other genres these days
They're cheap to make and easy to produce, meaning more profit. Especially for Compile Heart.
