How to carve a guitar neck by hand in two and a half minutes.

- Here's how to carve a cigar box guitar neck with just two simple hand tools - a half-round rasp and a spokeshave. I show this in real time, and including the set-up it takes just three minutes, all it needs is some sanding to smooth out the tool marks and it's done.
We use power tools in our workshop, but I think woodworking is about using the appropriate tool and technique, and for carving a guitar neck, we find there's nothing better nor quicker than doing it with hand tools.
You could use a 1/2 inch radius router bit to round over the corners of the back of the neck, but it still leaves you with a lot of work to do to get it all nicely rounded over, and a router won't deal with smoothly working into the transition of the heel / backstrap.
To get a fully profiled roundover with a router, rather than just taking off the sharp corners, ideally you'd need a large radius bit , something like 3/4" (18mm) so that would doubtless need a 1/2 inch shank bit and a big machine to take it, preferably on a router table. The set-up time with a router would be longer than our complete hand carved process, so we think that using a router is more bother than it's worth as it takes longer, it's noisy, dusty, potentially dangerous and doesn't do as good a job as doing it with hand tools.
" you got them ,there free" that made me chuckle .😄
Great vid, you made that look so easy
It looks easy because it is easy. The spokeshave needs to be sharp and set so there's not much blade protruding through the baseplate. You need to use long steady strokes with a firm pressure - it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it.
@@ChickenboneJohnhi John ,ordered a kneck of you week ago .Hope alls ok no reply on email .edinburgh Scotland uk ,cheers .
Excellent as always John. You have always made very informative videos I've watched for years. For myself I always use hand tools as feel is the way to go when creating my necks and some other components. As an aside is there a Boxstock this year John; i appreciate there is a lot into putting on an event like Boxstock. It was my first Boxstock last year and thoroughly enjoyed the event. I just cannot find or see any other events in the UK for like minded people like myself and my partner to meet up and attend, it seems like most CBG/Roots events are mainly in the USA. Also please could I ask where you can purchase the hand saw type curved rasp you used in this video. Cheers.
Boxstock is being organised right now, it will be October in Birmingham, we've just got to line up a few more people and finalise the date. I've checked and it looks like the curved "Microplane" rasps are no longer being made.
@@ChickenboneJohn That's great news about Boxstock in October, looking forward to it; I just hope the date does not fall at the last weekend in October as I am booked to go to the Goth weekend in Whitby where I play over the weekend. Thanks for the info on the rasp, I have got standard rasps which are OK but I may purchase one of those Shinto rasps.
@@ChickenboneJohnThnks for the kneck John be ordering a few more ,
Do you have any books?
Sorry. what we do is either in-person or online.
Where does one acquire a rasp such as yours?
Unfortunately, it looks like Microplane are no longer making them.
Damn! I’m thinking I’ll engineer one and make $um
