Given how many movies are released every year, it’s only natural that every so often, movies with similar plots are released. There’s only so many different stories to tell, of course there’s going to be overlap! But the really strange thing is when movies with identical plots or themes are released in the exact same year, sometimes only a few months apart from one another. Sometimes this can be a good or bad thing. It can either draw more attention to your movie and get more people to turn out to see it, but the risk is if your movie is the worst of the two, then you’re never going to hear the end of it!
There are famous instances where movies with very similar plots were released at the same time. Some of the big ones include A Bug’s Life and Antz in 1998, Volcano and Dante’s Peak in 1997, Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached in 2011, etc. The list goes on and today’s video is all about examining those movies with similar plots and deciding which one came out on top. There might even be ones you didn’t realize were the same thing, like Megamind and Despicable Me, so check out the video now!
And once you’re done, be sure to leave a comment telling us which pairing you thought was the best and any other examples of movies being released in the same year with nearly identical plots! And be sure to hit that big like and subscribe button for more awesome movie content like this. Thanks for watching Screenrant! Let’s get started!

My friend and I accidentally saw the illusionist when we trying to go see the prestige since they were in theaters at/around the same time and the whole time we were like “where the hell is hugh jackman” lol
But the movie was amazing.
I haven’t seen the illusionest
Is it good?
@@benjigoldstein8843 it's very good
@@CubamusPrime kk I’ll see if I can watch it
Benji Goldstein yeah it actually is a really good movie, less “dark” than the prestige but still a great watch!
Megamind is so underrated
True,.
Yes, it's a Me-TRAH-city 😄
B...B..B..Bad to the bone!
Absolutely!
Ive been asking for a MegaMind pitch meeting for weeks
William Fichtner is NOT Peter Stormare.
Lol. Immediately went to comment this. Who edits these videos!? There are silly mistakes like this in almost everyone of this type.
But Peter Stormare was in the movie :D
@@yesyesyesyes1600 Yes! And well worth the mention for sure :)
Thank you...was going to say the same
Also "adaption" is not a word.
Totally forgot TOMBSTONE 1993 and WYATT EARP 1994 telling exact same story of the ok corral gunfight. TOMBSTONE wins tho!!
This comment makes me think of Knocked Up haha
They was released over a year apart, they talked about movies that was released with less then a year apart, mainly the same year. But yea your right TOMBSTONE is the better of the 2.
Not on the same year?
Between Megamind and Despicable Me, the former is the stronger of the two films. Its humor has more layers and is more accessible to adults.
I think everyone who watched both movies likes megamind more. I even saw despicable me first but still liked megamind more. It's just awesome
Megamind was even better than The Incredibles.
@@melontusk7358 Glad you agree.
Despicable me the first movie to make me cry laughing and cry from a heartwarming ending
My kids don't think so and prefer Despicable Me, especially those little yellow Minions. So if kids outnumber adults for these movies, then Despicable Me is stronger. (even if I respect your opinion as an adult, I suspect our opinions don't matter much)
I remember Deep Impact & Armageddon and Volcano & Dante's Peak.
You guys totally forgot Hercules and The Legend of Hercules
And there’s also the god awful Hercules reborn Released by the studio asylum . I have seen seen all 3 I did like a legend of Hercules only because Scott Atkins is one of my favourite actors
I see no similarities.
Imagine if Star Wars had a copycat back in 1977 like maybe "Space Conflict" with an evil bad guy all in black who uses a "light sceptre" as his weapon. 🤔
How did you miss Tombstone and Wyatt Earp?
Because nobody wants to watch Wyatt Earp. You're a daisey if you do.
My first thought!
@@jeffmerz5367 it wasn’t bad... it just wasn’t as good as Tombstone
Wyatt Earp was WAY BETTER then tombstone. Tombstone is like a Disney movie. Wyatt Earp looks more accurate and not as cartoonish
@@KevinDaUnicorn I agree it was a good movie, but I don’t think it was better than Tombstone. Tombstone is still quoted today
In my head: Ashton and Mila recreated their respective similiar movie roles. "Hey, remember how we were both in movies where we had a FWB situation? Lets have that!" "But what if we end up falling for each other?" "That wouldn't happen, those were just movies". BOOM! Married with kids few years later. :)
Made me chuckle
Damn, Jackie
Megamind is a hidden gem.
Two novels, The Tower and The Glass Inferno, which later were combined into The Towering Inferno, almost became their own films with identical plots.
You missed a three deep sea movie event. In 1989 we got Deep Star Six, Leviathan and The Abyss. I remember seeing each one at the drive inn (remember those) . Me and my wife talked about how someone had a deep sea script they were trying to sell and after each time they left a meeting somebody called a writer friend and said "make us a deep sea movie with some kind of monster". Of the Three, The Abyss is by far the best.
Arrival (1996) and Contact (1997) - OK not in same year but close. Both based on Carl Sagan novel.
Yes, three deep sea movies, and two movies about alien contact.
Agreed on both.
Very nice catch👍
@@billr3053 No. Arrival was based on a short story by Ted Chiang.
I never thought The Illusionist and The Prestige had the same plot. They’re both about “magic” but that’s about it. Very different movies.
exactly
The Illusionist lost me when they used obvious computer graphics later in the film. Whereas in the Prestige the illusions were obviously done practically.
@@keithgoreham1463 They even created new Hugh Jackmans to murder over and over.
Very different but still somewhat notable that 2 movies about magicians in that era released in the same year.
@@TheVampireAzriel Omg
Little Big League and Rookie of the Year. Both about young boys who go into the world of Major League Baseball, one as a pitcher, the other as the owner. Oh, and one was Minnesota the other was Chicago.
How about a three-fer with An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, and Wolfen all being released in 1981?
You totally missed the Y2K craze of 2019/2000 there were no less than 5 similar movies. Bless the Child, Lost Souls, End of Days, Stigmata, The Ninth Gate. Gabriel Byrne appears in two of the films one as the hero Priest (Stigmata) the other as Satan himself (End of Days) all are pretty good films I'd personally recommend
5:11 - That ain't Peter Stormare, it's William Fichtner. But Peter was in the movie too so, yeah (he's the guy at 5:16).
Also, what? Dante's Peak was more successful than Volcano? Up until right now I believed it was the other way around. What a wake-up call. And to think these two inspired an epic and yet to be released to the public series called Scorcher...
thank you. I was hoping someone would mention this. William Fichtner is a good actor in his own right and deserved some cred. :D
@@thealohaperspective _Armageddon_ was packed full of celebrities, so it wasn't practical to credit everybody in a short segment about multiple movies (I don't know why they even bothered with more than just Affleck and Willis).
@@user-vn7ce5ig1z He could've at least named the correct actor at the end of the list.
"Who left the fridge open?"
Scorcher...memories
K9 is literally one of my favorite movies. Love turned and hooch too, but K9 will always be my favorite of the two
Weren’t there two Robin Hood movies in the same year? Costner and Bergin in 1991?
Maybe they didn't include it because it wasn't released theatrically in the US? Although since it did get a theatrical release in Europe it probably still counts. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves won in the box office though making 390 million compared to 15 million for the other film. Bergin definitely did better on the accent though.
@@SB-ep2gh Yes! Costner's accent was atrocious. (BTW, did you see "Robin Hood: Men in Tights?" In response to Prince John's question, "And why should people listen to you?" Cary Elwes, as Robin Hood replies, "Because, unlike some other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent." Priceless!) Stay safe.
@Michael Enquist Yes! (And they prove it with a song and dance routine!)
Did anyone else notice that friends with benefits and the other one stared two people that where in the 70's show? Further more, those two where lovers most of the show.
And now they are married together with kids
They played lovers but weren't actually lovers until much later, Mila was underage for the first three years of that show. Aston was married to Demi Moore, before the show ended.
And they're lovers in real life
Fun fact they’re actually together because of those films. They started a friends with benefits relationship together and then fell in love.
The female lead were in a black swan
Is it going to be hard to make a movie with nearly the same plot as another and release it in the same year?
Actually it's going to be super easy, barely an inconvenience.
The fun fact is thst both megamind and the despicable me franchise gave us a lot of memes
Marvel & DC fans know “the Prestige”, as the movie where it’s Wolverine vs Batman while “the illusionist” is known as movie staring The Hulk/Bruce Banner.🤣😂
There's nothing ironic nor coincidental about it; studios just snaps up popular actors, so _everybody_ will eventually be in an MCU or DC movie.
@@user-vn7ce5ig1z especially not coincidental since Nolan directed Batman and has a habit of using the same actors in his movies apparently. But it is kinda funny because it's Marvel and DC competing for the "Prestige".
@@connielingus8385 he definitely loves Michael Caine and Anne Hathaway
Not to mention when DC and Marvel did Amalgam Comics, they had The Dark Claw: Wolverine and Batman combined.
@Anders Maarup *Alfred
Dante's Peak featured an invincible dog and the strongest tires ever manufactured by humanity. Oh yeah, and James Bond and Sarah Connor are in there somewhere.
And a grandma sacrificing herself to save her family. 😨
@@CanItAlready That's the main thing I remember from that movie... Grandma hopping in that acid lake to push their boat!
You forgot to mention this video and Mr Sunday Movies’ “Are These 10 Movies The Same” video from four weeks ago.
Amazing video, i had the chills when you mentioned the illusionist and the prestige. I watched them back to back in 2009 in one day. Those days. I love Edward Norton and Christian Bale.
What about Top Gun and Eagle both were released in 1986?
Who won that round?
You mean Iron Eagle?
Top Gun and Iron Eagle, agreed.
You can not compare Navy pilots to Air Force pilots. They would kick your ass if you mentioned that loud.
Besides the young colonel's son was a maverick. And the pilot in Top Gun was just called MAVERICK.
The young teen pilot wanted to rescue his father. The other one just wanted to rescue his career.
One movie was setup in the middle sea, the other one in the indian ocean. Both had scenes at home, but it was not the same state afaik. You could also include The Last Starfighter into this discussion and you would be perfectly right :D
I was trying to think of a way to include The Last Starfighter. Perhaps with the movie Enemy Mine. Both movies I liked.
But I can't wait to see Maverick. Too bad Corona pushed it back to next summer.
Man, you forgot a huge clash : Dangerous Liasons vs. Valmont !!
Technically they released in different years but I'm pretty sure they were within 6 months of eachother.
But Dredd and The Raid was always one of my favorite "competing scripts" moments.
Literally the same ass movie
I've noticed these my whole life, and I've always wondered why they happen? Does one studio get ahold of another studio's idea and just try to outdo them? Or is it a complete coincidence because people are that predictable?
Exactly, I've always noticed it and found it so strange.
Deep answer: Collective consciousness
The more obvious answer is the right one.
"Friends With Benefits" gets a 69% RT rating. Nice.
Nice.
Nice.
lol
they just drove past it without even saying nice
Nice
"Movie who have the same plot" also " these two movies are nothing alike " which one is it ?
Answer: screen rant is a terrible channel held up by the back of Ryan George
The synopsis might sound similar but the treatments are different 🙄
Yes. Movies having the same "Plot" is not accurate. "Premise", "idea" or "subject" are better ways to describe it. Often these movies take different directions with the actual plot... but granted, not always.
Robin Hood (Patrick Bergin) and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (Kevin Costner) both in mid-1991
What about Fast And Furious?
Those 10 movies are near identical
No way man, there was one that had not one but TWO differences...the one in Japan with a totally different cast. What's that one called again?
Shanghai slide???
The last time I was this early-
Wow, I have never been this early
👏🍪
I have always assumed film twinning happens by multiple producers/directors/writers going to the same conventions and catching the same pitch meetings (no pun intended.)
I don't care what they box office says, Deep Impact was a MUCH BETTER movie than Armageddon. Not even close.
Much agreed!
I agree
Agreed
Hard agree! I also find The Illusionist much easier to rewatch & enjoy than The Prestige like both are good but one is just less intense.
Deep Impact was a TV mini-series it was never in theater's, there may be a cut version that is movie length but it is not a movie.
Awesome video 👌
Great video. I enjoyed it.
I'd say you missed two sets of great films and tbh I'm surprised not to see them here. 1987 Lost Boys vs Near Dark and 1979 The Warriors vs The Wanderers. All four classic films and in my opinion the lesser grossing and least well known were arguably the best.
C'mon screen rant. Where is The 13th floor/the matrix comparison?
Two 1999 movies about humans living in computer simulations.
The Prestige had Wolverine, Black Widow, Batman and Alfred in it. The Ilusionist had the Hulk. And even though they were released a year apart, Late For Dinner (1991) and Forever Young (1992) both dealt freezing people in the 40’s and waking up in modern times!
Man, you totally forgot to mention Michael Clarke Duncan when you were talking about Armageddon. normally, I would not necessarily bother with name dropping any particular actor, unless they did a phenomenal job and had a..."deep impact" on the plot itself, however, since he passed away 8 years ago, I feel it is only fitting to actually bring the light actors that people may or may not know have passed away.
That was William Firchner not Peter Storemare in your Armageddon cast
Stormare was the cosmonaut though, just wrong scene shown
I JUST posted a comment about that, then I saw yours
so this is how "the Mandela effect" came to fruition...
You missed 'Missing In Action' with Chuck Norris & 'Rambo: First Blood Part II' with Sylvester Stallone. Both films have very similar plots (because they were both based off of the same exact script that was floating around Hollywood at that time), both were made around the same year 1984, however MIA was rushed into the theaters ahead of Rambo 2, while Rambo 2's release date was moved to july of the next year due to reshoots. While both films did make a profit, Rambo 2 made more money at the box office than MIA...
MIA got sequels too IIRC (unless all Chuck Norris movies simply look like sequels as he tends to play nearly identical characters ?)
I had forgotten the illusionist existed! Thanks for the reminder!
B-b-b-but I thought Paul Giamatti was beloved by everybody. 😕
5:11. That is not Peter Stormare, that is William Fichtner Buffalo native! 😂😂😂😂
NICE! I WAS TOTALLY NOT EXPECTING THIS!
There’s also the two incredibly similar Truman Capote movies around 2005.
@@kgamzz26 Really? Well, I sure will give them a re-watch!
You missed The Matrix/ Dark City and A Stir of Echoes/ The Sixth Sense
White House Down was my favorite. Probably one of my favorites.
“Im fookin thirsty!!”
Hey there! I think you forgot The Matrix and the Thirteenth Floor. Both about simulated realities. You got a great selection though!
I was surprised not to see CAPOTE (2005) and INFAMOUS (2006). Released less than a year apart, both tell the very specific story of the writing of Truman Capote's breakout "true novel", IN COLD BLOOD. CAPOTE, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, was the "winner" of the two, as Hoffman took home the Oscar for his portrayal of Truman Capote, but Toby Jones's turn in INFAMOUS was as good, IMHO, and I think that film had a stronger supporting cast, including Sandra Bullock as Capote's friend and researcher Harper Lee. INFAMOUS is certainly less known today, but really, both films are top notch.
There were also two films about Hitchcock, of which Toby Jones played in one. Toby's dealt with his relationship with Tippy Hendren during 'The Birds', while the other film starred Antony Hopkins and was about the making of 'Psycho'. Toby, though a very fine actor seemed to play second fiddle to the other two films that got more recognition.
How fitting, you got confused with the box Office numbers for Friends with benefits and no string attached, the later was released on January and FWB on July
I was expecting 'The Matrix' and 'The 13th Floor'
If they included made for tv movies, there were 3 about Amy Fisher. One for each major network at the time.
Edit: Just read that two aired the same night, lol. I did see all 3.
Billy Crudup and Jared Leto both starred in movies about Steve Prefontaine in 1997/1998.
Ikr
Ah yes, the Long Island Lolita. So many memories. Wasn't the most popular the one where Alyssa Milano played Amy?
@@retluoc
I'm not sure but that version was from Joey's p.o.v., so it made him look like a victim that never had sex with Amy. Noelle Parker's version was Amy's side and Drew Barrymore's was from a NY Times reporter's account of the case.
Two aired the same night, but I didn't look up to see which one had more viewers. Of course, that wouldn't mean it was a better film. Joey wasn't an innocent victim like he was portrayed in the movie.
They were all trashy, if memory serves me correctly, not necessarily terrible trash, but kind of fun trash.
They're up on youtube, maybe I'll give them a watch again, lol.
Dante’s Peak and Volcano were some of my fav movies as a kid lol. Boffem!!
Oh honey, you got the theater release date for Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached mixed up. I know, it's confusing!
I saw No Strings Attached for Valentine's Day is the only way I remembered. 😂
The Matrix and The Thirteenth Floor in 1999, and Chappie and Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. Both have the same premises. Matrix and 13th floor were about living in computer generates universes, and Chappie and Avengers 2 were all about transcendence to and from conscious free will of robotic main characters. I.e. ...A.i.
What about EXistenZ?
Also similar to 13th floor/The Matrix in that the world isn't what it appears to be.
And it goes as weird as Inception, because at the end you aren't quite sure if they are back in the real world or not ...
What about Deep Star Six and Leviathan? Hollywood didn’t just do this 10 times.
I’m a fan of 19th century magicians as well. The sound track to the illusionist is amazing
I loved Ants. It was interesting, maybe that's what got me into Game of Thrones and Tudors
Ants is what got you into Game of Thrones? Lmao. Never thought I’d hear that.
I worked on Antz, but GOT? I don’t see it. It was just an animated flick for 12 and ups. Whereas A Bug’s life was skewed 12 and under. The only thing dark about it was the personal life of the star, Woody Allen.
This has always happened in Hollywood for decades. Two movies developed and released concurrently with the same premise. I won't say "plot", because "premise", "idea" or "subject" is more accurate. Often these movies take different directions with the actual plot... but granted, not always.
Steve Jobs told someone about A Bugs Life, and the guy went and made Ants because of that.
Batman v Superman and Civil War had a similar plot too. They both had a criminal mastermind plotting to get two famous superheroes to punch each other.
You guys missed Logan Lerman starring Percy Jackson & the lightning thief And Sam Worthington's Clash of the Titans...
Same premise... The former was the modernised version and was released in Feb 2010... However the latter was sticking to the ancient Greek mythical setting and was released in April the same year...
Deep Impact is far superior to Armageddon in my opinion. It's also more emotional and serious for the theme.
I think you should also add lists of all the movies with your videos
There was those Steve Jobs movies too, dunno if it was the same year. I do still talk about The Prestige to this day.
I might be a bit late with this but you missed The Sixth Sense and Stir of echos
I knew you would forget Capote [2005] Phillip Seyour Hoffman and Infamous [2006] Toby Jones 😜
I think they didn't include them is because even though they dealt with the same subject but were released in two separate years. I re-watched both the other day and found Infamous was so much better, imo
I thought it would be included, smdh.
Along with Tombstone and Wyatt Earp. Even if they were a year apart, they could've mentioned them.
The Book of Life & Coco....
I remember a bunch of these because I worked at a movie theater from 2004-2010 and still got free movie tickets from manager friends up until about 2016...
I was always confused how there would some how always be two very similar movies at the same time and one was usually better.
The prestige is on another level. The illusionist doesn’t even compare
I would also like to name Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation and James Bond: Spectre. Both were released in 2015, are spy action thrillers, and share most of the locations (Austria, Morocco, London). Not sure about the box office, but MI5 is more entertaining by far!
I've always found instances of synchronicity very interesting.
Agreed.
In 2004, there were the movies First Daughter and Chasing Liberty. Both were about a president's daughter seeking normalcy and shenanigans outside of her sheltered public life, while befriending and falling for their uncover secret service agents.
I already know Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down are here
Edit: first one was both of them 😭
I've seen AntZ, but strangely, I've never seen A Bug's Life and yet have zero interest in doing so.
Hehe.. Friends With Benefits got a 69% rating
Can’t believe you missed Aquaman and Black Panther. You could do a whole video about that.
I thought I had seen the Illusionist.....I just realised I had confused it with the Prestige
5:11 he says Peter Stormare and shows William Fichtner ''they were both in prison break people wont tell the difference''
This is the first time I'm even hearing of Mirror Mirror.
Yup...... Had no idea that movie even existed
Funny Part, because Ashton and Mila made exactly the same Movies but weren't together in one, they wanted to test the Movie Theory and started the Movie plot in real life and the Rest is History =D. That Fact makes the two Movies even more cool.
Yeah, that's the weirdest part about it. K&K were a couple on _That 70's Show_ but not in real life, until they were.
"Armageddon" is simply Die Hard in Space
Does that mean Hans just floats instead of getting dropped off that building lol.
@@rogermazuca4582 not necessarily, but it would be much more hilarious if Bruce Willis's character says Yippie kaiye before exploding the asteroid
I remember my dad and I going to see The Prestige and accidentally seeing the Illusionist.
The clip they used from Armageddon was not of peter stomare but of william fichtner. Do they not know actors properly or have even watched the movie. It feels like they are just using reviews of similar movies from the same year.
DEEP IMPACT is by far the better of the two doomsday films - much more moving and not as reliant on cgi and special effects throughout. Want to compare casts? Besides those you mentioned, DEEP IMPACT also featured Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave, Oscar winner Maximilian Schell, Oscar nominee James Cromwell, Jon Favreau, and Blair Underwood.
The Raid and Dredd - Apparently written without knowing of each other. - Both good movies.
A little too close for comfort...both films had villains who skinned people. But yeah, both great...
You forgot about This is the End and The World's End, both comedies about a group of friend surviving the end of the world.
My hats off to you for having strength to say “69” without immediately say ”nice”
Did not see them but i remember when you showed it
The Prestige and The Illusionist couldn’t be more different. No- they don’t share a plot. They only share that the main characters are magicians/illusionists.
And some of my favorite childhood movies... Cannonball! and The Gumball Rally (1976)
Observe and pursuit the mall cop perfect name for a movie bring both characters together.
Fear Dot Com and the Ring were also basically the same movie that both released in the sa same year 🙂
That one's a bit of a stretch. Incidentally, I was just thinking about _FeardotCom_ recently and how it was still in the early days of the (mass) Internet and how it seems so dated now.
I’ve noticed this before that very similar movies are released the same time. Since these movies take years to develop and produce does this mean competing studios are aware of what their competitors are developing and make their own version?
They were similar but the plots and themes of The Prestige and The Illusionist were very different.
Impossible not to include Tombstone and Wyatt Earp. Two movies about 19th century magicians? Sure. But two movies specifically about the same historical figure six months apart
