"This is real life, not a movie!" did not become a popular saying out of the blue. Movies have a penchant for making and playing by their own rules and these rules aren't necessarily grounded in facts and science. Cars exploding at the slightest impact, shooting at locks to break them open and never staying down long enough to be overtaken by the villain are just some salient rules that films have come to accept and abide. Besides being implausible, these moments also call into perspective our own rationalisation of inaccuracies and suspension of disbelief.
Movies don't give precedence to practicality for a number of reasons, but they also keep the facade up at times to assist the audience's perceptions. Sounds, for instance, are often played up or used where they don't belong to cue viewers in about feelings of suspense or danger. This video is a comprehensive compilation of thirty funny movie moments that we brush off which are entirely unrealistic and have little practical backing. Needless to say, they also serve as a cautionary tale of things to not mimic or pick up from movies because they could potentially put your health or life at risk (e.g. Jumping off of buildings into dumpsters.)

That point at 7:00 is so true! My mom and I were watching a TV show, back in the '60s, when a man entered a bar, ordered a drink, passed over some paper money, took a swallow, and was immediately joined by another man. I said, "Did you ever notice that nobody finishes a drink on TV?" "Yes," she said, "and have you ever noticed they pay for it with bills and never get change?" I'm glad you mentioned sounds in outer space. I've been a science-fiction fan since 1950s "Tom Corbett, Space Cadet" and "Space Patrol," graduating from comic books of the genre to novels, particularly the "Juvenile Novels" (now called Young Adult Novels) by Robert Heinlein. These books, regardless of their plots, realistically stressed the lack of air outside their "spaceships," "rocket ships," or space stations, weightlessness AKA "freefall," G-forces, etc.---in other words, all the things ignored by Hollywood. Movies produced by George Pal ("Destination Moon (1950)" [from a short story by Heinlein] illustrated all the real features and effects of space travel, one of which was the _total silence of the vacuum of outer space. As I told my younguns, "If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it, does it make a sound? No, it produces waves of air density which our ears interpret as sound. So, if a tower of something falls on the moon and there are fifty people there to hear it, does it make a sound? No, because there is nothing in a vacuum to make sound waves." Cheers! Stay safe, everyone.

#12 reminds me of a UA-camr I followed called Lockpicking Lawyer, he has a lot of videos of picking locks, in some cases he manages to break them in a matter of seconds... the technique doesn't appear all that difficult if you practice, I'm sure even a novice could crack most in a minute or two if they actually read up on it beforehand.
It honestly seems more believable for a protagonist to sit there for a few seconds (maybe a minute if you want to build tension) to crack open a lock rather than simply shoot it.

Mentions hearing explosions in space in 'Serenity' (despite clearly showing the scene in 'Serenity' where the opposite is shown to be true), and this is immediately before praising 'Firefly' (which is the T.V. series 'Serenity' directly came from) for also being scientifically accurate in regards to sounds in space.
    Yes, I'm angry.
Yes, you should be angry, too.
Yes, Screen Rant should be ashamed of presenting this video as a logical process of critical thinking while being illogically contradictory.
P.S. Sound CAN travel in space...you just have to have it interact with a solid object within a medium the vibrations can be transferred through in order to hear it....which is why there's ZERO sound during the huge space battle in 'Serenity' when viewed outside the ship, but the crew still hears the noise within the ship's pressurized interior.

Defibrillators don’t re start hearts. They actually stop the electrical current which the ecg shows. They stop the heart. This resets the heart which is why the heart restart. Unfortunately for flatliners they would not have survived. CPR also looks really gentle, because if they did it for real on a person it would kill them.

Actually people do sit up gasping for air from horrific chronic nightmares: it’s been happening to me for 22 years with chronic nightmare/terror syndrome. So should double check your FACTS before insulting real people.

    • @cyqry
      @cyqry 3 роки тому

      Different people have difference experiences.
Before starting medication, I used to suffer some pretty bad chronic nightmares and usually I would wake up in a sweat or sometimes crying, but rarely would it be in an upright position. Normally the nightmare was too fresh in my mind for me to even think of moving or making a sound... even if that meant holding onto my breath despite needing to gasp for fresh air.

There is something that is at least less common in modern movies... but was almost a requirement in early action TV shows...
There were many TV "detective shows" where the hero would literally be hit over the head and rendered unconscious at least once in every episode...
Then he would wake up a few hours later, with no concussion, and usually nothing worse than a headache that was easily cured by an ice pack...
Likewise, in many shows, the hero would quite frequently be jabbed with a needle and rendered unconscious...
But never seemed to suffer an overdose... or woke up before being thoroughly tied to a chair somewhere...
(As I understand it, both hitting someone just hard enough to render them unconscious, or giving someone the perfect dose of an anesthetic drug, are both sort of tricky.)

So comic book movie characters are inspired by the comics they are derived from. Comics go back 80 years. The artists drew the characters in tight clothing because they were basically drawing the human form in various poses. This sped up production without having to draw the action of clothing as it follows the action of the character. The first X-Men movie gave a nod to the bright silly uniforms as they donned more realistic (slightly less tight) leather.

I am baffled by people talking about realism while showing clips from sci-fi, fantasy, superhero and horror movies. Is it really how easily the glass breaks that is the most unrealistic thing in these movies? Is ear drums not breaking more unrealistic than the small man that turns into a 10 foot tall muscled killing machine within 10 seconds? Choose your clips better.

I think it does make sense, Because the movie is not called Guy Jumps Through Window Unscathed, it’s called The Fast and the Furious 32. All of the superheroics things are a given, and you should already be suspending your disbelief for those because you know that that those can’t really happen in real life. But a real-looking situation of someone being thrown through a window breaks the reality of what we know about physics, in that it’s too easy and they remain unhurt. A superheroic character is already beyond normal physics. But that doesn’t mean that the entire universe they live in is beyond normal physics.

Is glass supposed to behave differently in sci fi movies? The movies being sci fi or fantasy doesn't justify wrong physics

Can you turn down the music on your next video? I could barely hear your voice through half of this.
