Movies can be a great way to provide a dramatic retelling of real events and bring these amazing historical stories back to life. But sometimes they can play somewhat fast and loose with the details, brushing aside actual historical fact for more entertaining creative flair. This means that they can really blur the line with what is true and what is not, giving us false information and making us believe something that is in actuality completely inaccurate.
In this video we will take a look at some of the biggest and best movies based on true events that are shockingly inaccurate. This will include movies leaving big pieces of information out, making up romances that never actually happened and just completely making up new characters. These are some of the most popular movies that you may not have known were feeding you false information. So prepare to get out your history books and look back through some of the best true non-true movies around!
What was your most shocking inaccurate movie? Were there any you missed? Is there a historical/true event you wished they made a movie about? Let us know in the comments below and make sure to follow us on social media and to subscribe to the channel for this and more interesting content!

Why is Bohemian Rhapsody not in the list?!!!!!
To save it for part 2?
David S 😂
There is so much to the Queen story that one would need a series of movies to tell the story of the legendary band. One HUGE error is that the band was actually touring when Live Aid happened. Back in those days it was common that a rock band would spend a month or two in the studio, tour for a year, then take 6 months to a year off before going back to the studio again to repeat the process.
Where’s Lincoln? They never mentioned his Vampire hunting.
cos maybe thats completely fiction with a touch of reality(Abe lincoln)
The Vampire Hunter thing was written in Lincoln' diary
Because this is a list of least accurate. That movie was spot on
Maybe it’s not in this list because it’s exactly what happened
The events of Alien Versus Predator are completely different from what happened in real life…
This is 100% true! In real life, the squabble between the two aliens was because of one eating the other's lunch! ...When it was clearly marked!
And he keeps showing pictures of The Lion King but he did not put it on the list. Why?
@@dlb4299 ummm, seriously?
NavelAviator Hey if you leave it in the fridge for over a week it goes into the community pot!
Oh you didn’t go anywhere near hard enough on The Imitation game. They made a huge establishment of 10,000 people, look like the work of a backyard guy in shed.
It’s rare for any movie to actually tell a true story, as opposed to stories swirling about in a screenwriter’s head. Chances are a true story movie only tells part of the real story, and could be as minuscule as somebody with this name existed.
Bohemian Rhapsody is completely bull**** too. Almost nothing happened the way the movie shows
Ikr. Probably the most accurate thing about the movie is there is band called Queen
@@MrKingvenom77 After the fact that the characters existed, they lived in a specific time period, and did music.
Yeah, but I wouldn't be surprised if Brian May thinks that's all how it went down
They basically manufactured all the conflict in the film.
@@Altmetalpunk Brian May said more than anyone to not to confuse the movie with real life. He corrected many details & showed his support for the movie as well.
Blood Sport!!! Dudes whole life was a lie then they made a movie "based on a true story" about the guys fake stories of his "real" life...
Pearl Harbor needs to be on this list!
Can we also mention that the machine Alan Turing helped to create was actually named "Victory" and not after his childhood friend/crush? And that the British actually built 100's of copies of that machine and still didn't crack the German's codes with 100% reliability like they seem to show in the movie?
Don't get me wrong I love this movie but i'm surprised bohemian Rhapsody isn't on here. Most of that movies isn't real.
Fun Fact: There are more planes in the ocean then boats in the sky.
@@UnbracedChimp27 what happened
@@TRAILERBOLTS It is a true statement; all aspects considered
you can't prove that.
@@RoverIAC yes I can
This comment section made my day much better. Thanks for that.
Never knew The Revenant was based on a true story, even if only partly.
"based on a true story" *proceeds to create a whole new story from scratch*
The imitation game also does dozens of incredible (and respected) women who tirelessly worked at Bletchley park a disservice by omitting them to include a cringe-worthy ‘fight the patriarchy’ subplot. There’s a sad irony in there.
This is an oddly strange and small list, as far as inaccurate movies about true events goes- it's pretty much a majority of them that aren't completely right. Could easily have a series just on this subject alone lol
based on a "true" story. Yes it was based on a story. That is true.
Haven't watched it yet but I better see Pochahtas on this list
Edit: I have been satisfied
I'm a big fan of Alan Turing and in spite of its many flaws I love the Imitation Game. But the portrayal really does inaccurately portray Turing as the arrogant brilliant jerk. He was certainly brilliant, one of the most brilliant minds in history, but he was painfully shy and what people sometimes took as rudeness was just his almost autistic lack of comprehending basic social customs. If you are a fellow nerd I highly recommend the book that the movie was based on: Alan Turing: The Enigma. The author is a mathematician and he does an excellent job of explaining the importance of Turing's early mathematical work (before WWII) which had huge significance for mathematics, philosophy, cognitive science, and as the theory that established the foundation for programmable digital computers.
Turing was an undeniable genius, but he was a bit odd. He didn't want people to use his tea mug, so he locked it up - not in his desk, like a normal person, but with a heavy chain and padlock.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based on true events. The movie is true to the extent that a woman was once murdered in Texas by a crazy man. No chainsaws or massacres were involved.
That was "inspired" by true events not "based" on true events.
@@davidwiley4953 The ORIGINAL film was marketed as being based on true events to attract a wider audience and to act as a subtle commentary on the era's political climate; although the character of Leatherface and minor story details were inspired by the crimes of murderer Ed Gein, its plot is largely fictional.
Awesome video 👌
I'm surprised Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't on this list, cuz damn that timeline was inaccurate
You are gorgeous
I like to call this type of Hysterically accurate
Does Fargo count? It's based on true events that never happened.
Really? Knowing that messes with the movies to an extent, some movies like Fargo or chainsaw massacre or Blair witch are awesome to me for the element of truth factor...such a shame
I like to imagine that The Greatest Showman is the story of P.T. Barnum, as he might have told it himself.
When you’re so early there’s no fake mr beasts
Bro, never, and I mean NEVER EVER disrespect the epic racoon known as Meeko!
No "Bohemian rhapsody"?
Ironically, the Enigma code was cracked by a minor thing. At the beginning and at the end of the messages the special greeting form would always be used (you know, the one with the 2 H)
That, and all naval messages followed a set pattern of listing the time, date, latitude, longitude and weather conditions.
I'm okay with some changes being made for a film as long as characterization of real people is accurate, the main events are accurate and credit/blame is given accurately. That's why the extra action in Argo is okay but ignoring the Canadian contribution is not.
Argo is pretty much a fiction from start to finish. It's a fake CIA promo film and anyone involved in it should be deeply ashamed of themselves. Many people, to this day, believe this crap was true.
3:41 the greatest showman. Never even heard of the movie, but as soon as you mentioned the word _diversify_ ...I kinda guessed it was all fake
James O'Neill I saw the movie on Disney +
I honestly love the movie, and I get that it isn’t as correct, but they literally show PT Barnum as being manipulative in various ways??
It’s unfortunate when the movie is bad, too. Then, accuracy was sacrificed for quality of story that was failed to achieve
I watched Cool Runnings probably about 20 times in my school years. Considering that I had no idea it was even based on a true story at all until now, I'm pretty impressed.
Last time I was this early, I lost an eye.
I notice that Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is not on the list. Confirming that he was, in fact, a vampire hunter.
me: 13 comments can i see?
youtube: no
This was actually an ok Screen Rant video!
This is the reason I haven't watched Captain Phillips to this day.
2:30 - leaving like just for that mention, thank you
Almost every movies that starts with ''based on real events'' should be on the list.
Hi. Two you missed (at the top of my head) are Gladiator and The Untouchables. Two great movies full of inaccuracies.
Yup. Good call.
Yeah, people need to realize the phrases "based on (or inspired by) a true story" is the film's way of saying they are using real names, places, or events from history with proper citation, but under no obligation to be accurate. That's what documentaries are for!
Anybody else getting two unskippable ads every 2 min? What the hell?
As someone who has been to Bletchley park twice Alan Turing did break the enigma code with a lot of help the team who broke the code was very large but there was no communication between the different huts
I went to Bletchley on a school trip so i actually got to use the enigma machine
Came here looking for Braveheart, U-451 and The Patriot.
Left feeling 33% happy....
Who had no idea that the greatest showman was inspired by a real story?
Another sucker born every minute?
Really? I'm sorry.
Enemy At The Gates deserves an honorable mention, and it's a shame too, because the true history of the events that took place was much more interesting.
Outlaw King", the Netflix movie about Robert The Bruce is more historically accurate and just as gripping as "Braveheart". Its main miss is that Edward II wasn't actually at the climactic final battle of "Outlaw King".
For a musical based on real events Hamilton has a surprising lack of slaves
Lol
I wish you had reduced the number of films here and gone more in depth on some of them. Pocohantas and 300 are obviously not historically accurate; the creators of 300 made it wisely known that they were making a comic-book movie, not a history film. Braveheart has been critiqued so many times that it's accuracy is largely known to be a joke. See the History Buffs take on Braveheart for a true look into how bad it really is. It would've been nice to hear more about Captain Phillips and The Imitation Game, and maybe do Lincoln also since they over-glorified him in that movie (even though Daniel Day Lewis was phenomenal as always).
Braveheart- the Battle of Sterling Bridge... without the bridge. o.O
Make a Screen Rant of the original Wonder Woman movie (1974) with Cathy Lee Crosby.
Glad Argo was on this list.
So true, funny how it seems
Always in time, but never in line for dreams
Head over heels when toe to toe
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound
I bought a ticket to the world
But now I've come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh I want the truth to be said
Im a history student, and Braveheart hurts me soul every time I see it
I was very shocked about the greatest showman
Watch bohemian rapsody pitch meeting 😂
Shrikant Joshi yeah yeah yeah.
Whoops! Super easy, barely an inconvenience! Historical inaccuracies are *tight*
I knew Cumberbatch wasnt Alan Turing! :P
That makes them a historical fiction.... and done
"The movie Re-writed the Stars"
OOOOOOOOH
I likes movie P.T Barnum more than real life one
this was fun to watch
300 and Troy were made for us ladies... All you need are sandals, loin clothes and swords!! “Save a horse, ride a cowboy” 🤗
Would a Pocahontas, John Smith relationship more similar to Logan and Laura relationship without romance been a little more closely accurate? Because that sounds like a good movie.
I’d give a bit of leeway to Pocahontas. It was based on John Smith’s memoirs, which were grossly exaggerated.
Hugh glass is part of the dunder family. Hes born in Scranton
The amount of adds in this video is absolutely unholy
Hold on why does the real guy from. The greatest showman look like Mr bean? 😂😂😂
I live near Jamestown Virginia where the events in Pocahontas occurred and want everyone to know that we absolutely have white water rapids and diving off waterfalls is a popular passtime. /s
I’ve never been this early 👀
It's pretty funny that many comments throw the book at Bohemian Rhapsody, which was mostly exposed by ScreenRant.
How about 1984? I was there and it wasn't that way at all.
The Revenant was a biopic?
I need a Pitch Meeting for 300
Perfect Storm. (Spoilers) No one comes back alive and they lost contact with them. All they know is they got lost and never came back 🤷♀️
What about the Anabelle universe ???
I'm more surprised. I will defend 300 as that's not just based of the actual event but instead a Graphic Novel.
I'm more surprised at Braveheart, now knowing that the Title "Braveheart" goes to Robert the Bruce instead. Still haven't seen it either, I think everyone knows he dies in the end but I've never gotten round to see it.
Hollywood always adds, changes or omits the real story.
Movie:Based on true story
Also movie:Kosovo is independet.
Proud albanian❤️🇦🇱
@@Mp-bu7zx Ok im proud Serbian
VALKYRIE = MASTERPIECE 👏
This is Cooper; revisited
Exaggerating real events are soooooo unbelievably TIGHT!
Poor Pocahontas had it so bad; she was manipulated, kidnapped, assaulted, kidnapped again.
Raccoons are “the work of the devil”?!? Don’t tell Rocket Raccoon! 😢
When Pochahantas and 300 get on before Bohemian Rhapsody🤔
Never been so early....
Fun fact: Everyone else including me who is commenting right now hasn't watched half the video yet.
damn ur right 😂
300 is based off the graphic novel that’s why it’s different
Yep. It makes me face palm whenever anyone brings up 300 being historically inaccurate. Frank Miller was (is?) a huge figure in comics.
Where is James Cameron's Titanic? There are plenty of historical inaccuracies, excluding the main two figures never existing.
Is lion king based on a true story
There are WAY too many advertisements in the middle of these videos.
Wait a minute.......where's "Fargo"?
Wait, that will be on the most accurate film list, lol.
I like the new narrator
Im perfectly fine with seeing Gerry Butler in a loin cloth rather than metal.
"THIS IS....."
How about U-571. The story of how Americans captured the enigma machine from a stricken German u-boat… except it was the British… and the enigma code was broken before the Americans joined the war efforts… other than that it was spot on. 😂
Do a Noah schnapp video
Does Hamilton count as a movie now that its on Disney+
Is it just me or does he say "math genius ALEC Turing"? WTF? 2:15
Now do Titanic
300 isn't horribly bad, the parts with the war rhinos, the phantoms and the trolls happened only after Leonidas sent Dillios back to warn the other Greek city states. At the end we see that the story is told through the perspective of Dillios mobilizing an army. He has no idea what happened after he left. He's just telling a propaganda tale in the style of ancient Greek epics Leonidas becoming more like Perseus or Heracles than the man he left at Thermopilae.
