In the Summer of 1986, the TOP THREE albums were Van Halen's 5150, Journey's Raised On Radio, and Boston's Third Stage, and NONE of them had ONE VIDEO on MTV to release for any song on the album for that summer, breaking a trend of albums only trending with videos since 1981 when MTV premiered, and so as someone who grew up on my music on Radio, not having Cable until I was 23 in 1991 when I got my first apartment, it was great to realize quality ROCK music could crack the TOP 40 like it used to be before MTV!

Having seen both versions play live, I can honestly say I prefer the Van Hagar version of the band. While Sammy Hagar may not have been quite the flamboyant front man that David Lee Roth was, he was a better singer and could hit notes that David Lee Roth could only 'dream' about (see what I did there?!). Sammy played a mean guitar himself, so to me that just meant a better overall total show. In fact, Sammy played several solos in concert while Eddie was playing the keyboard! The dueling guitars section between Sammy and Eddie stand out in my mind, as they climbed up into the lighting scaffolding to perform it! It was insane!!!

Sam helped get the band more mainstream with what I would call more pop/"soft rock" while Dave was more dance/"hard rock." It isn't all to be blamed on Sam for going softer, either. This album, "5150," is the first album on which SAMMY HAGAR replaced David Lee Roth as vocalist. Sammy arrived with credentials, having enjoyed a successful solo career (biggest hit: "I Can't Drive 55") and first come to public attention as vocalist for the band "Montrose" on their first two albums.

The comments on this one are really good. The changes Sammy made to VH were great and I was fortunate to see them live at Wembley in 1993 when they did the Right Here Right Now tour. It's the best live concert experience I've ever had and is still my favourite to this day. I adore One Way to Rock from that night and you can see it live on youtube. Seeing Sammy and Eddie jam away during the solo is something I'll never forget.

I was in the 6th grade in 1990, when I first heard Dreams which came out in 1986. My cousin was playing it in his car one day and I was ripped to bits. Couldn't understand the magic I was hearing. I fell in love with Van Halen and my cousin gave me his tape. It was the 5150 album on cassette. For the next 3 years it's all I listened to on my walkman. Once I got to high school I figured I'd listen to more of their albums. I bought FUCK and was officially hooked. All these years later, I like 5150 a little better. Then Balance came out when I was in 11th grade and it was everything I wanted. I fell in love with Van Halen and listened to them all throughout junior high and high school. 5150, FUCK and Balance. In these 6 years I discovered my other bands which would become my all time top favorites. Along with the mighty Van Halen, it's The Scorpions, Megadeth, Led Zeppelin, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains. I do love several other bands but those 5 or 6 are top. I'm sure I have a top 10. Their music means so much to me and I love them so much. When I listen to them frequently and I always find new things and new parts of a song that I end up loving so much. Well, Dreams started it all for me. 1990. 6th grade kid with a lot of imagination and genuine intrigue and wonder. After highschool I learned more about DLR and those first group of records. It was still Van Halen to me and I loved it just as much. I bought all the cd's , studied and memorized every thing and I love it all. I have favorites from both eras and even some dislikes from both. I was lucky to see them love in the early 90s. My first concert and a tremendous show.
Good reaction video you guys. I enjoyed it. They have such a brilliant catalog you need to get in to. ✌️ 🎸

With David Lee Roth you got an entertainer. 100% fire.
The Martial Arts, the backflips. High screams, charisma, fun and sexual, booze fueled energy.
Even at one point, Big Band showtoons. (That was an interesting phase)
He was the original, and he was totally right for their early juvenile party years.
With Sammy Hagar you got the inspirational songs about the power of love, the world as a whole, and even a bit of of naughty, but with more subtlety.
They are two COMPLETELY different animals, and for MOST fans they make for a divisive finished product.
At the end of the day, even though some fans may not like one or the other, both versions of Van Halen have something for everyone.

This is your 1st song with Sammy Hagar as singer, he adds something so special to the mix, and the songs get more emotional and deeper. I think maybe Eddie wanted to go in that direction already but DLR was holding him back, just conjecture, the split with DLR happened for SO many reasons it's easy to pile on more. You should try Love Comes Walking In, or the song Right Now.
