As a 30-year short boarder who’s switched to long boarding during the pandemic, I seek variety in every session. I go for sweeping cutbacks, floaters, faded takeoffs, and cruising up and down the board for nose rides (think wannabe Taylor Jensen) - the latter being the newest skill given my previous type of board. I marvel at your commitment to working solely on one or two skills per session. My approach has always been to surf the conditions offered to me as a way to maximize enjoyment. Nevertheless, I enjoy your focused vlogs as they’re insightful and honest. Thanks again!
Welcome to the dark side 😉. Tommy from ten toes surf said that there are typically two types of surfers... those that can focus on one thing and those that don't. Gotta do what you feel best with... but yes I do like to be hyper focused on one method haha
LOVE your advice to say your focus goal while paddling into a wave! Always head out with ONE goal per session to work on... pumping for speed, floater to rebounding off the white-water, nose-riding, etc... and then reinforcing that while out... Definitely on parallel paths!
Every session, send some time working on: 1) Riding switch-stance. 2) No-paddle takeoffs. 3) Fin-forward takeoffs 4) And remember, you don't always have to race to the nose. Some waves just don't call for it.
Cool video, thanks! I went out for my first session in over 30 years and my first time longboarding out here in OCMD last weekend. I was working on a few things, such as body position, timing the wave, and popping up. You're right, when I was concentrating on the latter I was saying "pop up!" over and over to myself while I was out there. I finally got one good stand up and I was so stoked! 🙏🤙
Oh thats great to hear! Yea that's the method that really helps me stick to what I'm working on. However, I struggle with attemping more than one thing. I do better when i'm only working on one specific thing hehe
Hey mate, loving your channel and learning heaps from your videos. Been longboarding now for 2 years and just starting to take the first steps up the board. Currently surfing a 9ft soft top which has been great to get things going but not ideal to cross step on, so it's time for me to move onto a more ideal platform. About to purchase a Takiyama in the pink, so hopefully that takes me to the next level. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks Darren! Yea you will love the new board. It will take a few sessions to get used to it though. When I first got a dedicated noserider I thought i'd be a pro the day I started... not the case haha!
Excellent advice - stick to your goal for the day!! Too often we just get caught up in the moment and forget everything we were going to try. BTW - loved the fade turn about 4 min 15 seconds into your video.
Another cool vid. I always film my self and look for things to improve. at the moment I'm trying to work on generating speed by pumping and top turns. I'm hoping that if I can get more speed a big sweeping top turn will be easier. question. if thrusters help hold your board rail into the wave face, why aren't they used on a longboard?
Thanks John! Oh sweet... yes speed is necessary for some big turns. I always struggle with speed after a noseride. As for the tail, I have NO idea about the science behind it. All I know is a square tail is best for noseriding lol. Maybe someone more knowledgeable can respond
you should try this technique called " edging". It's going right to the edge for as long as you can without blowing it. then you just back off right until the very last moment over and over again.
Awesome tips as always mate. Do you feel that the change of board has helped too?. I am in the process of doing this now (8 month wait time to shape it) . The change I am hoping will allow me to mix things up to improve my riding.
Thanks Daniel! I do feel the new board has helped me quite a bit. Iv'e even heard a very good longboarder (the worm) say that the Bing continental would be a tough board to learn on. She didn't give a reason, but it's an interesting thought. I think changing things up is a good thing and teaches us quite a bit. There are things that I can appreciate about both boards now.
This is something I constantly think about when it comes to hanging ten. Is there a difference in hanging ten and nose riding? For me I don't consider hanging ten to be when both of my feet are hanging over the end of the board, and nose riding is when my feet are as far forward on the board without actually having my toes off the board. It's something my friends and I talk about constantly.
That’s a great question… and you can argue I didn’t hang 10 once in this video because my toes weren’t actually “hanging” . The way I think about it in my head is if both of my feet are on the nose, that’s a hang 10 in my book. But technically I’d have to get the toes hanging for it to be a true hang 10.
Thanks for documenting the journey. You are definitely helping others to progress as you do also. 🤙🏻
no problem! having fun doing it. Glad it can help!

Thanks Jack! yes that was a fun fade... it's getting a little more fluid with my feet being farther back, that's for sure
Nice waves! Clean and empty! Spring Lake?
Yes sir! Can't believe there was only one guy out with me haha

So you mean hang 10 immediately and than get right to a hang 5 as I'm about to lose it? If that's what you mean, ill try that today haha
Amazing aloha ❤
Thanks so much! fun one
