    Front side: your hips are much more parallel to the wave then backside. More tucking the back knee in the bottom turn to square up the hips and leaning back /arching when cross stepping. With a more back arched posture the floaters off the top will be easier to initiate and execute as well (watch some old Tom Wegener or Tyler videos). The front side waves look zippier than the rights probably contributing to the tendencies come from.

      dang some great points! I’m going to look back at the video to pin point what you’re talking about. I’ll also check those guys out. Posture is huge with Longboarding and you’re right, my rights look so different from my lefts

    As always good stuff. Particularly liked when you backed off with the cross step to get trim control of your board. This seemed to give you time to attempt another move forward. Looking forward to the next video, as I continue with my stay my 14 day stint in quarantine in NZ. Only 6 more days to go, and than freedom to surf at my local beach Ohope. Cheers

    Something i notice about Joel Tudor in his recent world title win was he was never in a rush to get to the nose. He often would take a few steps up then if he wasn't happy he'd walk back to a little turn and reset his board in the right spot. Perhaps it's a little easier for him as he had a longer wave to work with. Perhaps you might of felt a little rushed in the lefts as they closed out most of the time. Other then that i think your going very well.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks Luke! Yea Tudor was so smooth in that comp! It is a bit different due to the wave he's riding and his experience. Waves here are quick so they will look different. I doubt Joel would even try to get to the nose on our waves haha! He'd probably take out mid length

    Brian - good video! The Chingona is on fire! My guess and just a guess on your front vs backside…your speed front side seems to be double what you are traveling on your backside…you do jump a little here and there but looks like you are rushing to the front because you are running out of time. Can’t wait for next week’s video!

    Great faded takeoffs. My guess as to what you think you're doing wrong: Your feet are often not perpendicular to the long axis of the board, giving you less control. An observation: Compared with videos of pro longboarders, your body looks more tense. Would loosening up help? Who knows? Thanks!

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому

      Yea the faded takeoffs were working this session! Wow you guessed the first half of what I'm doing wrong with the feet being "perpendicular". I think I will naturally loosen up over time as I improve... hopefully atleast lol

    Hi Brian, I am LOVING these videos! How does one began the first steps to cross step? Is there muscle memory involved? Do you think practicing on land is the best way?

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому

      Thanks Sherry! Well that's a hard question to answer... I'll be making a series on this next year. But yes, practicing on land is a great idea. Tons of muscle memory involved, but nothing compares to practicing in the water. Your easiest start would be to buy a 2x4 piece of wood and practice cross stepping on that. Than head out for a surf session and practice taking a step or two in the white water. That would be a decent place to start, let me know how it goes!

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому

      Thanks Samuel! I’m not the most well versed on longboards, but for beach breaks I believe you want a little more rocker and a pulled in nose. Point breaks I assume you want a flatter wider board? Maybe someone else can chime in on this

    • @samueltardif7943
      @samueltardif7943 2 роки тому +1

      thank you for the answer, I think my question was not clear it was not for the characteristics of the board but rather what type of wave is best suited for noseriding in general? maybe both ?!

      @@samueltardif7943 Ohhhh I see. Well i've never surfed a point break, but I imagine a point break is much better for longboarding overall. Beach break noserides can be epic tho! Both are fun I assume hehe

    Hey mate I'm from Australia, was looking at buying a longboard. What would you recommend? I can stand up easily and go across the face on a 7ft foam board but wanted to have a crack a longboards since the summer isn't producing the best swell.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому

      Awesome! You're going to love a longboard. It's going to feel big and weird at first, but you'll get used to it. If you see yourself trying to start cross stepping and noseriding eventually, I would buy a noserider. However, if you're trying to transition slowly into a short board, I would buy a hi performance longboard (lighter with three fins).
      There are tons of good brands. You're best bet is to visit some local shops and see whats available. If money is no option, check out the bing silver spoon bingsurf.com/collections/silver-spoon
      Also, size is important. This will depend on your height and weight. Contacting the board companies directly is the best way to get an answer as to which size longboard you should get. Check out Ben Considine's channel as I believe he rides an austrailian brand that is probably easy to find for you. Good luck!

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому +1

      I would agree, the new board does feel a bit heavier... but i'm not sure it actually is. It just feels a certain way when water is flowing under it..... hard to explain. Normally I'm surfing for 2.5 to 3 hours

    Great Videos! I’ve been trying to cross step on a 9ft soft top by surf tech. Not sure if it’s the right type of board? I’m 5 8 165 pounds..

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому

      Thanks James! Not the perfect board for it, but it's a start for sure. Good surfers can cross step on 7' single fins, so you can practice on almost anything. Ideally though you would want to be on a 9'4" - 9'8" traditional longboard.

  • @LenoxHillPartners
    @LenoxHillPartners 2 роки тому +1

    6:32 Looks like you paused slightly with your left foot on the first cross step to steady and set yourself up for better cross-stepping all the way forward, yes? (I'm goofy-foot as well.)

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому

      Kind of. More likley I didn't feel very confident in my balance so I slowed things down. Once I took my left foot off the back of the board to start the first step the board lost it's rail engagement for a split second. Placing the foot back down in front helped stablize. Ideally, when you lift your back foot to start the cross step your board should be dead still. This is achieved by making sure you trim the board and put plenty of weight on the front foot before starting the first step.

  • @natsmovies
    @natsmovies 2 роки тому +1

    on the front side cross steps, maybe you aren't facing forward and squaring your shoulders enough? Backside may make that more natural to happen, as you look back to the wave, but frontside you are turning towards the face too much?

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому +1

      Yes that's part of my problem for sure. Dillon just also messaged me on instagram saying that my weight is too far back, which is 100% true. However, not what next videos going to be about. It's actually more simple than that

  • @4Dcruz
    @4Dcruz 2 роки тому +3

    My guess is that you’re just hauling ass on the lefts. Too much speed, getting too far out towards the shoulder and just need to stall out or throw a little cutback maybe? It’s funny because i can only get on the nose frontside and never backside

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Esteban said the same thing haha! Yes I believe you are correct, I must naturally stall the board out better on rights than lefts. I really did try to slow down on lefts this session, but I'm still flying. I'll try even harder next time hehe
