Intriguing conversation. I am an Italian-American, full Italian, grandparents are Straight From Italy on both sides. I still have family that lives in Italy as well. My grandparents lived well into their nineties. In fact, my grandmother was 99, and my godparents lived to be 101 and 104 respectively. Both of them are Italian. And all of them drink wine often. I still have relatives that are in their late 80s that drink wine with every meal. My wife's family is straight from Dublin Ireland she has 11 aunts and uncles they go to the pub regularly in their middle and late 80s. I'm just wondering how all of that lineage and all of those people in Europe that drink regularly have such fantastic longevity and health. Things that make you go, hmmmmm. Lol

I think that's a bit of a logical fallacy to assume that long life was caused 'by' alcohol consumption (or anything else that is technically a stress on the body etc). On my dad's side, both grandparents lived to nearly 100, grandpa had been an alcoholic and smoker for decades through most of his life. Neither he nor grandma ever regularly exercised or purposely ate diets trying to be healthy. But, I am quite certain that alcohol consumption (and more obviously smoking in the case of that grandpa) did not contribute to their long lifespan - rather would assume that if anything... had they both not drank, grandpa never smoked, both regularly exercised for health, and both ate diets purposely geared towards optimal health they would have both made it past 100.

@@kreculjkreculjcorrect - what I'm saying is there is no data to suggest that putting toxins in the body prolongs life. We do know fairly surely that toxins can reduce lfiespan, however. If I had to make a semi-educated guess on why some of our ancestors were able to live quite long despite unhealthy habits, I would have to guess that perhaps they simply had very robust bodies which were capable of dealing with that extra stress and still live long. Part of my concern with data collection here is that there aren't many people who care about their health enough to live their entire lives doing more or less everything they can for optimal health so the only large groups we can gather data from are everyone else. There does seem to be plenty of data suggesting that smoking and drinking are not long-term beneficial to the body, however, which is why it seems likely to me that avoiding toxins as much as possible may result in longer life than actively shoveling them into the body long term.

Don't allow this guy to affect you like that - it's your life and you're self-aware enough to do what the hell you like with it. He's an intelligent person, no question, but, for me, he's attitude is patronizing, and for a psychiatrist displays a distinct lack of a wider perspective of human life. I've been on the wagon for just under a year, so I have some empathy for what he's saying. I may go back to drinking when the year is up.....or I may not - I'll cross that bridge when I get there. But.....there is more to life than analysing everything through the lens of how every substance affects the human body on a biological level. He even mentions magic mushrooms - is he utterly dismissing the increasing research that is going on with the treatment of PTSD with controlled medically-supervised psilocybin intake? Goodness sake, he calls himself a psychiatrist - that is some serious stuff going on with those trials [I don't or never have done MR btw]. Don't get me wrong - I'm very firmly in the camp of looking at the detrimental affects of alcohol, I'm in the thick of it right now, and I am serious about it - but I have little time for his preachy, patronizing manner. Just my 2cents.

This is all well and good, but what is the actual practical impact?
Assuming one has, like maybe one to three beers, once a week, and nothing more.
There's a significant difference between being a habitual, everyday drinker and one who drinks only occasionally.
Obviously, everyday alcohol consumption is not good, but does that mean one should never, EVER have even a little bit, maybe paired with food at a nice restaurant or something?
Let's not blow things out of proportions if not necessary.

We are adapted to eat ripe fruit fermented by yeast every day since the ancient times. Body can deal with a beer or two like it's hard water. You'll pee it out, burn it as callories. The liver can deal with much more for decades as long as you dont lack some B vitamins and other stuff it needs to be happy.
BTW, cant you get resveratol from non-fermented juice?

Right! Just because it's not obvious now doesn't mean you aren't in the development stages of major health issues due to bad lifestyle choices. I have a friend who started eating healthier three or four years before being diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer, something that takes almost 10 years to develop before being a death sentence. She hadn't had a colonoscopy, so she didn't know there was a problem and it was something a better diet couldn't overcome. She was gone six months after her diagnosis.
Hey I'm no saint--I still have several beers/week but also exercise daily, haven't had fast food in over a year, cut way back on carbs (esp sugar) and bad seed oils and eat lots of healthy fats (nuts, seeds, olive oil, etc). I opt for grass-fed beef, pastured eggs and some organic foods when possible/affordable. Intermittent fasting (typically two daily meals/no snacks) has helped me be able to afford these healthier food options. Btw, I'm 63-1/2, take no prescriptions and am at my ideal weight...

Most likely, a better diet would solve the problems where u rely on alcohol.

I added a comment and it didn't render. So I have been a functioning alcoholic for 40 years. My daily consumption would make your guest melt down. At 59, I still hold down a job that requires a really clear and cognitive brain function, I go to the gym and I increase my strength. I have a beer belly and am not claiming to be the best 59 year old on the planet, but I have outlived many of my peers. There cannot be any RCTs on alcohol use, or probably any kind of trial, because it would not get ethical approval. What is reported is retrospective observational studies, which really are meaningless. They will show what you want them to show. There are so many variables and confounders in any kind of studies like thesethat they cannot be even considered as almost correct. The liver breaks down 1 unit of alcohol per hour, or therabout, in races with 2 copies of ADH. I have never seen any biochemical pathway that leads ethanol to become glucose, so call it out, show how acetylaldehyde becomes glucose and I will reassess my answer. Your guest is a scare monger with an agenda.

Also, there are varieties that don't have those defenses. Either way, I'm not sure how this comment relates to alcohol other than it maybe being turned into wine, to which there are many other fruits out there that will ferment just as well.

If he's going to drop in the Bible references, he missed out ones such as:
"Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses"
"Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do."
    "Wine gladdens human hearts".

10:35 I disagree with Dr. Amen's simplistic model about mitochondrial functions when it comes to various substances use. Yes for alcohol it is undoubtably the case and I don't think anyone should really drink because there is simply no proven health benefits to that substance, but cannabis and especially psilocybin/ psychedelics have such a wide range of therapeutic benefits that we have to be able to balance things out in the equation and realize that a minor altercation in mitochondrial function can be a perfectly good tradeoff for some people in specific contexts. Preaching total abstinence of powerful natural drugs is not only anti-science, it's unethical.
Saying "magic mushrooms suppress brain functions" is completely misleading and as stupid as saying sleep reduces brain functions. It temporarily CHANGES brain functions and brings you into altered states of consciousness that would otherwise be accessible via very deep meditation, neural beats, or dreaming. Psilocybin is renowned for promoting neurogenesis, the contrary of what he implies with "suppressing brain functions". Just because the brain starts working differently doesn't mean it's impaired, sometimes that's exactly what someone needs.
And lets not even discuss how the substance is non-addictive and has no lethal dosage. Lumping alcohol with such drugs is pure disinformation.
