This makes Dale’s death even sadder, when DW said “oh I hope Dale’s okay..” after the wreck it wasn’t a commenter talking about a driver, it was DW talking about a close friend.
Bingo. DW was the only one in the booth that understood how hard Earnhardt hit the wall.
I was thinking the same thing as I watched this, it was the most honest, real, and heartfelt moment in network sports, hands down!
They weren't that close. Dale was a nutter
@@default123default2 Yes they were. They became really close in the 90s. Stevie, DW's wife, used to give Dale scripture quotes, which he'd tape to the dash of his car on race day.
Dale also gave DW a rocking chair as a retirement present and they had a 1 on 1 interview before the 2001 Daytona 500. You don't know your ass from a hole in the ground!
DW's wife gave Senior bible scruples before races including that race
The light in DW’s eyes as he recounts these stories says it all.
Being able to see DW's facial expressions adds something invaluable that the plain audio can never convey. An absolute character.
You want a really good one listen to him on the scene vault podcast. He goes reeeeaaaalllly in depth with it and then they got Bill Gardner the Di Gaurd owner ( half) anything DW related is great!
i can't just listen to the podcast i have to watch it.
I hear ya but tbh Im just too busy to sit and watch the longer in-depth stuff. Got things to do. Gotta git er done!! LOL

Check out DW going for a ride in a V8 supercar round Bathurst. Its a blast!!
This man and all the older drivers are what Nascar is lacking today
Its what everything is lacking these days, NFL, UFC, NHL, public schools, even the hood
its the drama between the drivers that made it entertaining
I know when you’re right!!
I agree
It lost its roots... got big, became too much about money, everyone got media trained and it lost the magic it had.
I havent watched a Nascar race in ten years but I could listen to legends and vets from the mid 80s to 2010-ish talk about what the sport used to be all day.
Me too... There is Damn near every race from the 90s on UA-cam
yup
I actually just started watching NASCAR again this year. I can say it hasn't gotten any worse than when I quit watching it but unfortunately it hasn't improved. I think they need to go back to actual off the lot cars modified instead of space-age aerodynamic fiberglass covered race cars they run now
@@racejunkie566 Exactly !
I feel the same way as you do when it comes to NBA. Can’t stand watching now but I could watch guys from the 80s and 90s era sit around and talk for hours
DW has his moments, but we cant deny this man is a legend.
Love these old Nascar stories. Nascar definitely hit its peak in the 90s.
And pretty much died off in the 2000’s sadly.
Didn't just about all of the good stuff?
Happy Thanksgiving hombre.
As did so many things
Loved this video
@@ThomasWilliams-uq9lo 2010s more so
Junior and DW both had Budweiser and Mt. Dew for sponsors. That’s pretty cool.
I wonder if you could have both as a sponser at the same time, one beverage during dinner one beverage for the rest of the time
Also the 88 number
Bro I totally forgot about that it was ment to be
Both drove for Rick Hendrick and both drove Chevrolets.
Michael Waltrip also had Pennzoil for a sponsor at one time and then DW drove the #1 Pennzoil. Also, if you go back and look, Dale Jr honored DW with some of his old school paint schemes.
when Darrell got to drive for Dale in 1998 he had a new lease on life and proved he can still drive with the right equipment...
imo DW took better care of the car then Park, i think they should've kept DW in the 1 car

Dale earnhardts walking away stories are really funny
5:37 when he goes No Listen is the funniest thing ever. You can tell DW is down to earth and loves talking about the old days. Genuine guy.
We need like 5 more episodes with DW. Keep capturing the history of the sport guys. Nobody else is, and the work yall are doing is preserving an era of the sport that some people don't even know existed
Yes, we need to document all these stories as told by who was there.
indeed.. legends
Stuff like this is great as one day these older legends will all be gone & so many will have never experienced it.....
DW is quite gracious and candid, which is all you can ask for such a figure as he. Such good stuff.
Mike: Dale and Michael ? Explain that.
Junior: yea, do that. 🤣
When I think of friendships Dale Sr could have, Mikey ain't one of them.
Couldn't believe Dale dumped Hornady in favor of Michael when the team went to cup
Ironic, cause Dale was the one who approached Mikey and not the other way around (all the way back after his wreck in 1990). Don't know what the older bro would react seeing his #1 rival interacting with his brother, and I never knew that Hornaday was the one with the short end of the stick
i want to point this out, D.W. is already teary eyed even the mention of Dales name and not in a bad way...thats HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT Earnhardt made and left in this sport. its more than just stories and words spoken...Dale was the competition and the one you had to beat any given sunday...and is missed in this sport - Still. Goodspeed D.W. and i'll be here to listen anytime you want to speak about Dale Earnhardt.
Probably literally calling Dales death has alot to do with that
Growing up watching these men race was the best part of Nascar to me. As a kid born in 79 watching the 3 car Dale and 8 car Jr were my 2 favorite. Me and my dad would sit in front of the TV and cheer on. Never got to go to a race to see it live. But it was good enough for me as a kid. Thank you Jr and everyone who contribute to telling us all the great stories of some of the Nascar History.
I don't care what anybody says, DW is a cool guy.
Everyone says that NASCAR was better in the old days, one DW quote from this interview explains it all! “If you beat me you take bacon off my table” fills you in on the passion and commitment the older guys have. The younger guys don’t have the issue of not being able to eat if you have a bad finish!
Do you really think dw wasent eating as well the week after not running so well after a race in 80's??? hahha get a grip old man
@@mitchbrown6652 Doesn't matter.. That's the attitude that they approached racing with.
@@bucky13 no
This is the man that made me love NASCAR in the 80's.....Thanks DW you made a lifetime fan out of me...
I'm getting a whole new love for ol' Jaws. His person to person personality is so much more likable.
I miss the old nascar , for the ones that wasn’t there! It was bad ass racing and that’s all it is to it , BADASS
Me too. They were enemies when the green flag dropped, but would drink beers together and vacation with each other’s families.
Poor Darrell..he looked like he was about to cry..
He's an emotional guy. Part of his great character.
One of my favorite interviews, concerning, Dale Sr. & D.W. Really ties their relationship, together.
Thanks Jr.!🤜🤛
"I thought I was dead"Now that's an old school driver right there ✌️
I always thought Dale was a bully on the track. I was glad when Jeff Gordon came along and started pushing back. It made for the hay day of Nascar until Dale died. What a great rivalry. Love the inside stories.
Dude was called The Intimidator. You don't really get a nickname like that by being nice on track
Earnhardt was a total bully. If he was currently driving, and pulled his crap against today’s drivers, they would have put him into the wall the next race.
@@donjeffries9190get real man, there ain't a driver on today's track that would equal a pimple on Dale Earnhardt's butt
On the track or off of it
Certainly not you!!!!
@@donjeffries9190 lol, sure they would.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dream on. Had Busch and Shrub acted like they do with Dale, they'd have had to quit.
The modern era drivers will never be what guys like Sale, Darrell, Neil, David Pearson, or Cale were. They could take a tenth place car and win with it. And they could drive rough with the very best. Modern day NASCAR drivers aren't even close. And never will be. The best days of stock car racing are long gone.
Man I have been listening to 99% of the podcast you guys did and not for nothing can't get enough of this one get this guy back man he got stories to kill bring him back soon. Love the podcast you guys doing good job can't Get enough.
me tooooo😀
Like Larry Mack says there's only one Darrell Waltrip and thank God for that
Darrell has a great memory and a passion for the past! Love hearing his stories about Dale Sr!
I was 11 watching the 2001 Daytona 500 at my birthday party as a fan of Mikey. Everytime I see DW I just think of him saying after the wreck “I hope Dale is ok” with tears of joy and sorrow in his eyes
Every time we hear a story about Dale its special - He is so missed
Nope!!!!!!
@@donniereese9271 Why are you here? Classic Donald,
Why? For the drama? You love cruel people?
I was never a Waltrip fan until he started in TV. He is a real racer that still has the fire. I miss him on Fox! I could listen to his stories forever. BOOGITY, BOOGITY!!! LET'S GO RACIN BOYS!
Every sport needs a prominent figure that has a polarizing love/hate relationship with their fans. Dale was the archetype of that idea without ever taking it into consideration. He just wanted to be in Victory Lane after it was over.
I heard so many times from people that they "loved to hate" Dale Earnhardt. And all of those were heart broken when he got killed. He'd kill you on the track, but he'd help you get there. He was special.
Well said! I was one of those people who couldn’t stand Dale Earnhardt but the sport was never the same after we lost him.
You're right, a great human
I was a mark Martin bill elliot fan so you can imagine how little Iiked Dale, but never in a million years would I have wished harm on the man. I just wanted my guys to beat him on the track
He drove like a prick
Miss DW in the booth. Him and and Jr in the booth on NBC would be great.
LOVE the DW stories, thanks a million! Since Darrell mentioned your Dads' jet here decided to reply. Quick note to Dale Earnhardt Jr., I'm the inspector that did the pre-purchase examination on your Learjet when you traded it in for the Cessna. I had them park it right next to my desk and spent hours sitting on the divan reading the logbooks thru the France family years and your family. Can't tell you in words what a thrill it was sitting in there reading the books. For everyone reading this and listening to these stories, that jet was in immaculate condition, a real testament to the years of professional maintenance and loving care it spent it's life in. Several of us seriously looked at buying it and leaving it just as traded-in and selling charter flights to your many fans. Imagine riding in the Earnhardt jet to a race, could not get any better than that!! Always wondered if anyone in the aviation community approached you about doing that. Anyway, God bless your family and have a safe New Year!!
The joy in Jr. when they talk about his dad is awesome and undeniable, we miss him too
i cry every time i see Dale sr. hold back 40 cars by himself on that sad day for the world.
Need to have about 5 drivers or crew members for a group story telling time...I can listen to this all day.
So good !
Beautiful woman and nascar fan! Can’t complain!
Caliente
This is gold.
The story he tells about driving the 1 is amazing you can see the emotion in his eyes and love in the way he tells the story
This series with Darrell has been an absolutely phenomenal treat! Loved it
I personally could listen to this conversation for days, I love the wayDW brings life to everything he says, what a great interview, thank you jr and crew, and thank you DW for sharing wisdom that was earned not bought.
The DW episodes on the DaleJr download are the best !!!! Very interesting and entertaining 👍
Smiling and cryin the whole interview! Thanks Dw ! Please do more of these with dale jr ! its important nascar history!!
Get Cale Yarborough on the podcast he probably has a ton of cool story’s
Is he still alive?
@@hunnerd4566 Yes. He doesn’t do many appearances because he expects to be paid to go anywhere
@@joshjarnagin3161 Wow that sucks. He can’t give anything back to the sport they made him rich and famous? That’s really sad!
@@joshjarnagin3161 Seen him about 20 years ago. Can confirm the money thing.

The transition from never go to my outside to Christmas every year at 5:45 is so fast
Loving the DW interview. Can't get enough of the old school drivers and their stories. It would be great to get Cale, Bobby Allison, Harry Gant and as many other old school guys to come in and interview them.
@Seven Deuces Thanks for the heads up, hate I missed that one. I'll have to search and find it.
Mark Brown If you search for "nascar driver reunion" in UA-cam there are several older ones there. Some real funny stuff!

Harry Gant has been on the podcast already.
I love hearing the "back in the day" stories! Thanks guys!
Two Dales - the one you loved and the one you competed against.
Really loved the video of your grandmother speaking about you grandfather and your father..I lost my father shortly after your father passed and I would often think of how you handled your grief and loss...and then...I watched you at Rockingham and so on ..when you got out of that car in Daytona , man I cried for the both of us..god bless young man

Such a big smile on my face listening to DW.
I could listen to these stories all day. Hearing about NASCAR history from those who lived it is an honor and a privilege. Thanks for sharing these fascinating stories!
These men are NASCAR Legends because they built the sport into what it is today. Man I miss watching their great races. Today just doesn’t have the same energy it used to.
I could listen to DW tell stories all day
1995 All star race was the beginning of the end for DW
I think it was the 1991 Pepsi firecracker 400 when He flipped on the backstretch at Daytona. Yeah, he won a few races after that but he never really was as competitive after that race.
JR....... This one knocks it outta the park..... Your show is awesome.
Jr... one of your best shows yet! Thanks for bringing on DW
Dale Jr. - love your show man - you're the perfect host for these interviews and I always finish them laughing and with a smile. Keep up the amazing work!!
Jr. is one of the few that if you didn't know him & he walked into a bar you'd have no idea how set he is......one of the most down to earth "celebrities" out there 👍
Absolutely Love these shows with DW. THANKS 🙏
Love to hear DW’s stories from the past!
I can watch these type of talks with DW for hours and never get tired of them.
Best story to date!!
You never know it to listen to him now, but DW was as badass as Earnhardt once.
DW was a character, if I recall he had to clean up his act for the Tide ride
DW might be the greatest guest to date. All stories had me looking up these races on UA-cam.
Hey Junior... I just want to say thank you for doing what you do. I get so much joy listening to these old stories. Having done a little short track racing back in the day every episode takes me back to similar stories and characters in my own life. These stories are all played out thousands of times over at each of the little short tracks across this county. The names and the places might be different, but the stories always seem to remind me of someone I know or raced against. I just love listening/ watching these. You do such an awesome job at taking us all along for the ride. Thanks again!
One of your best videos ! DW keeps me wanting more of his stories👍🏼
thank god for these vids. expressions, laughter, smiles.. i cant get enough.
Thank you Dale Jr. for your channel.
love the both of you drivers - both my 2 all-time favorites right here - DW and Dale Jr. what a fabulous episode.
My favorite show so far Dale Jr. I have questioned why it has taken so long for Darrell Waltrip to be on the show, but I am so glad that was able to happen. DW is the closest ambassador to Dale Sr in my opinion. DW is a strong connection to the old school days and tells awesome stories as well know. He is as real today as he was back in the day! Great show guys!
These PRICELESS TREASURED STORIES ARE HISTORICAL AND PURE SOLID GOLD🙏 Jr don't ever stop doing these Priceless Treasured Stories that are TREASURED BLESSINGS AND PRECIOUS MEMORIES 🙏💞🤗💞🙏
Man, I miss 90's NASCAR.
Man I miss DW, he'd was my first driver i rooted for in 1987 . The look of disgust on his face when he talks about k mart car. They saved him as well, and put a lot of marketing dollars behind it and him. But he was ready to go prior to his team closing, last race He won was what 1992 ?? Great stories from as great man. Keep this up grab more late 80s and 90s drivers!!
Watching the videos brings back good memories. As an Australian, My last vacation was in 1994 in NC. I was crewing a late model driver ( Chrissey Oliver) for 2 meetings at Hickory Motor Speedway and Tri County Speedway. Met Chrissey when she came to Australia and raced in the USA team in dirt speeway. I worked on my nephews sprintcar. As a big Dale Senior fan, Met Kerry and Kelley when they raced late models. Also spectator at the Coke 600. Great memories.
I bet I watch these, and listen to the 2 part DW interview podcast at least once a month. I haven't figured out why until just recently. DW's story telling ability, and intimate knowledge of the history, combined with Jr hearing the stories about his Dad. I just can't get enough. I wish you'd have DW back. That man is a national treasure, and a critical link to the sports history.
Man the memories are flooding back Pocono Mountain Speedway I believe it was 1984 1985 and 1986 I want to say it was called the Mountain Dew 500 we were in Infield all three years it was spectacular thank you DW God Rush Dale senior Neil Bonnett and Davey Allison
First time I went to Pocono was in the early 90s, saw Dale Sr. win both days races! Won the Busch race on Saturday! Never will forget those 2 days there, I still have a small notepad that I'd brought with me and took notes of the entire race of where Dale was and what was going on! Dale took it from Jeremy Mayfield in the last turn on the last lap! Went to see him at Bristol a year or two later and he crashed inside the first 50 laps and went back out just for the points, rode around the rest of that day with no fenders or hood on the car! It was all I could do to set there and watch the rest of that race, knowing Dale had no chance of ever winning, yet, I thought if Dale can get back out there and ride just for the points, I've got to stay and see him finish the race too!
Absolutely incredible stories and emotion from DW as usual. I would expect nothing less.
Love all the stories about your dad and you my two most favorite drivers of all time
Dale and Darrell, two of the best. Going off topic. The Pettys, Henrecks, and the rest of the old timers are close to passing. I don't see a long term life for NASCAR. My opinion.
No other Podcast,Compares to Jr’s. Priceless,Keep up the Good work.
Love hearing these stories!
Love the old stories!!!
I know it has been a year now. And some how I missed this one. So nice to see these kinds of stories. Love love love it. Thanks jr
More legends telling stories the better. They won’t be around forever. Great episode.
I was never a fan of DW but both Part 1 & Part 2 were the best interviews. I really had a number of laughs and appreciated the great stories. I'm looking forward to you having DW back again. Keep up the good work on the ole race tracks. Even us west coast Canadians like what you are doing. I'm a history buff as well on ranches here in British Columbia and Alberta.

Great interview. It’s so wonderful that you are able to relive your fathers life through the eyes of others. Kc
Darryl is a good man, very funny, I could listen to him and Jr all day long 👍
Its been years since I could have anything to do with racing (watching it or viewing videos) after Dale Earnhardt passed. After the passing racing did not have the meaning it had when Dale Sr was racing.
Dw was great on this ! One of the best ones yet.
Interviews are gold,good work.
I could listen to DW talk all day.
Was never a NASCAR fan, but I was always a DW fan. His interviews were the best part of some races. I learned more about racing by accident listening to him than I ever did on purpose listening to other drivers.
Awsome show loved the full pod cast part one and two can’t wait for his return and part 3 👍🏼
Dale Earnhardt knew how the game worked long before the rest of the bunch even understood what was going on . You can't fault him for that
I can listen to these stories over and over again.
DW was my favorite growing up, but DaleSr was respected and loved !
