- We all know that Mark Hamill played The Joker in Batman The Animated Series ----
but he didn't play the part ALL the time.
Did Batman and Robin actually play The Joker on Batman The Animated Series?
... Kinda.

A non-mark hammil voice coming out of that joker just feels weird
Weird yet familiar like that isn't you Joker is it? It doesn't hurt to have a different voice behind the chemical bath grease paint in my opinion it makes it to were the alternative voices can be ended and it will still make sense for Mark Joker to return
Sounds weird, too.
Feels dirty after listening to that.
Agreed
Imagine a parallel universe where Tim Curry actually voiced The Joker throughout BTAS and Mark Hamill tryouts were made public and people were saying how he doesn't fit the role and thank god for Curry for sticking around?
Imagine a Parallel Universe Where Someone mentions that There’s a Parallel Universe where there are Parallel Universes. Now THAT would be pretty damn Parallel.
Tbh i doubt that would happen. Curry's wouldn't have been as memorable cos he just sounds like Dr Frank n Furter.
@@you-5-iver804 Eh... It was kinda the first big voice role for Hamill, but whenever he voices a villain in show he also almost always uses his Joker voice. It's fine for voice actor to have similar voices for different roles. Most notable voice actors have two/three voices at best. Human voice range is just this far.
I'm mostly curious if Hamill loved more for just his voice or for the legacy of BTAS.
In that universe he’d probably play the role less post 2012
No hamill is objectively better. Maybe these takes of Tim curry were simply first takes.
“Melt like a gRillEd ChesE SanDwIcH” woah xD
The reason the show didn't use already recorded tracks of Mark in small cameos is down to SAG rules. If they use his voice in an episode, he needs to be credited. And if he's credited, he needs to be paid his rate for that episode. Which, even when you have a solid budget, is just wasteful if you're literally just seeing the character for a few seconds.
Thus, each time the Joker appears in a tiny cameo, one of the voice actors already appearing in the episode does the voice for the Joker, as they're already being credited.
I recognized pretty early on that Kevin provided the voice of the dream-Joker in the Forgotten and found it even more poetic, as one of Bruce's fears explored in that dream is that he might become the Joker. His image and voice literally morphing into his worst enemy is a potent image,
I was about to comment this. Bringing in a big name like that for a non speaking cameo doesn't make sense on a tight animation budget
Ironically the hallucination scenes were always made extra creepy to me when it was someone aside from Mark Hamill doing the laugh.
The fact that he was voiceless or had the wrong voice made him feel like a force of nature. Like a fever dream. Hamill can be terrifying in the role but there was still a comfort hearing his familiar voice that was removed in these sequences.
IT FINALLY MAKES SENSE! Having this video FINALLY allowed me to put it together! I was always confused: Hamill was stated to have gotten the role because of his performance as Ferris Boyle in "Heart of Ice." But that never made sense to me, because that episode, both in terms of airdate and production date, came AFTER several Joker episodes. Now I get it! Tim Curry fully voiced the character in those episodes, Mark Hamill came in later, and after Tim was out, Mark dubbed over the old ones before the season aired!
That was driving me crazy for years, thank goodness for this video. I guess sometimes you just need to hear it said outloud.
God that would've driven me insane.
Which is kind of fitting I guess, another cruel joke played by the clown prince of crime.
Yeah, but Mark Hamil got this part because of his turn as James Jesse aka The Trixter in the Flash.
Welcome to the asylume
@matthewrosenthal753 Not according to most sources, which specifically cite his performance in "Heart of Ice" as the reason he got to audition for Joker.
That Kevin Conroy’s joker laugh is just haunting 👻
not as much as the Loren Lester one
Makes it even sadder that he’ll never get to voice the Batman who laughs in a animated or just speaking role
I feel like Curry could've been great, but just wasn't given the right direction. But that's a bit of a theme for the Joker, Hamill seemed really rough around the edges during BTAS but in later iterations really owned the role. I feel like we could've seen that with Tim Curry, and I'd really like to see him have another shot at it. Hell, I could even hear him as Batman. He's got a string enough voice for it.
Personally, I feel like Hamill’s performance is stellar right out the gate. Even in the episodes where he’s dubbing over Curry it already sounds like he’s made the role his own. He definitely improves over time but I don’t think he sounds rough. If anything I think Kevin Conroy’s Batman voice is rough in the first batch of episodes. It sounds a lot closer to Conroy’s actual speaking voice then it would later where he really starts to hit that dark deep register we know him for.
Health wise, I don't see that ever happening for Curry. He had a stroke and is in a wheelchair now if I'm not mistaken
i heard he is recovering but problary would never be the same.@@succulentcranberry
Exactly. Wasn't given the right direction. Hamill is still better but not by much. Tim Currys would have been iconic but probably the most Iconic with better direction. But Mark hamill made the definitive joker voice. Perfection. I don't even consider Kevin Conroy as the most accurate batman voice. But hamill was that good. So was Conroy but Bruce greenwood in young justice just fits the character more to me.
@@KaiserUnique Hamill was pretty good starting off, then it became perfect
If it wasn't Mark I would be completely ok with Tim Curry as clown prince of crime he plays a great criminal and he plays a great clown
RIP Kevin Conroy, Arlene Sorkin and Richard Moll:(
It’s a weird, repeat of history, where after Bill Skarsgård played Pennywise in the remake a lot of people who wanted him to be casted as the next joker but I think that’s mostly coming from the fact that a lot of people didn’t like Jared Leto’s performance is the joker
Can you honestly imagine him in other Tim curry roles? Like Dr Frank N Furter, Darkness in Legend, Wadsworth in Clue, or Hexxus in Ferngully? Actually, I think I can totally see him as Hexxus….
I can totally see bill skarsgard playing the joker in a live action batman movie
7:12 whenever I read a comic with the Batman who laughs I hear this laugh and Kevin Conroy doing his interpretation of Mark Hamill’s joker 🃏
Maybe my imagination is going crazy here, but I think Conroy's Joker laugh sounds more like an evil version of Disney's Goofy, who was originally voiced by Pinto Colvig (appropriately enough, the first actor to portray Bozo the Clown) and nowadays by Bill Farmer.
Speaking of Disney, it would be a real treat for me to hear Jim Cummings giving a Joker vocal performance. Cummings is another one of the all-time greats, voicing Winnie-the-Pooh, Tigger, Pete, Darkwing Duck, and even Scar for one singing line in THE LION KING. He's often thought of as a more subdued voiceover artist, but people forget that Cummings's first role for Disney was as Lionel the Lion on "Dumbo's Circus," for which he used a high-pitched Brooklyn accent that could be said to evoke the Joker's lunacy.
I am glad Mark Hamill made a major impact with the Joker. Tim Curry's take is interesting but I am honestly not impressed with the performance.
To be fair I wouldn’t mind Tim voicing the joker as a joker voice on its self honestly it’s good
didnt he wind up dropping out because of illness he worked through in those first sessions?
didnt watch long enough. that was tim currys explanation.
Me too
GSP? Is that you?
I don't think Troy Baker gets enough credit for his work as the joker.
Agreed, he's actually my favorite joker voice actor
@@Toby-Draven He and Mark Hamill are definitely tied for me. With Mark retired from the role, I'd be totally fine with Troy as his replacement.
Both Mark Hamill and Tim Curry portrayed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the theater productions of AMADEUS. Tim Curry, in the London production, and Mark Hamill in the Los Angeles production.
To bring The Joker full circle I would absolutely love to hear Tom Hulce portray The Joker in an animated project.
His laugh as Mozart in the film version of AMADEUS was absolutely unique.
Considering Hulce’s role in _The Hunchback of Notre Dame_ which involved his character being clowned and crowned the “King of Fools”, it might make even more sense.
This is Hollywood's fault! THE JOKER! THE JOKER.
Uh?
what? lol
“This is Hollywood’s fault! The Joker! The Joker!”
ngl i like tim curry voicing him he sounds so good and funny while voicing it
While recording over a voice that's already been animated is hard, and it requires certain skills and techniques, it isn't impossible.
Dub actors do it all the time. Of course, it is more common in the rest of the world to dub american animation, but the US has dubbed it's fair share of foreign (such as japanese anime) too. Which Mark went on to do later in 2003 when he did the english voice for Muska in the dub of Castle In The Sky.
The joker gang were certainly something, I’d love to see a video on them
I feel like batman when he asked the mobius chair for the joker’s true identity
Mark Hamill "I am the joker your looking for" 😂🤣
Not gonna lie i did not know this was vee infuso with the new profile
I knew about this and it reminds me of the buzz lightyear of Star command pilot movie cause originally they were going to use the series buzz voice actor Patrick Warburton but managed to get Tim Allen to reprise the role for the pilot so he had also had to work around material made for Patrick Warburton’s way of speaking not his and he had to adapt how he said e like to try and make fit with the animation according to the making of the pilot
I’ve never once heard Michael McKean (Chuck McGill himself) voice Joker, it was surreal!
And I've never once heard of either of those two.
Michael McKean is best known for Spinal Tap and his comedic performances. He was Saul's brother in Better Call Saul.
Curry is a legend yet his voice just wasn't right for Saturday morning. Hamill's voice was more for cartoon.
I think Curry could have done a good Riddler.
This is Hollywood's fault. The Joker, The Joker.
Tim Curry has a great voice one that should never be messed with. Yet for some reason the voice he uses for the Joker sucks. It doesn't sound like Tim Curry. They should have just had him use his normal voice, accent and all. Would have been better.
Someone that isn’t mark hammil feels odd
Do I detect a New York/Brooklyn accent to Tim Curry’s Joker ? Sounds to me, a bit similar to Harley Quinn ?
I was thinking he sounded awfully similar to John DiMaggio
@@Morlok616I was thinking the same thing lmao, he sounds a lot like john dimaggio
Daily request for a discussion about Batman the Brave and the Bold
Are we ever getting a video about Joker from Batman the Brave and the Bold?
A voice like Nicholson or Hammil is the ideal voice for me
If mark would ever quit, I’d want his replacement to be Troy Baker.
If only you knew
@@crashybandicoot0136 Tell me, wise one.
@@Probably_Deadpoolhe did quit if you don't know but it's big news so you probably know.
I love Tim Curry, but that sounds NOTHING like him. For real, what was he doing to his voice to get that performance?
Honestly look up some of his voice acting gigs; Curry is shockingly good at chameleon-ing his voice. There have been multiple times where I was shocked it was him behind the role because of how good he was.
Ow we just need mark to play pennywise in some way, shape or form
Tim Curry Joker sounds like John DiMaggio
Never knew this, cool!
Sheeze… Curry sounds like Bender from Futurama.
I saw the fucking thumb nail THAT SHUT SCARED ME
Michael McKean was great! I would've loved to hear more of his Joker.
It's so hard hearing any voice besides Hamill's for the Joker. When the Joker robots fall over in Christmas With The Joker, the laugh you hear is also Tim Curry
FUN FACT: Michael McKean himself played an evil, fear-based clown in the _Star Trek: Voyager_ episode “The Thaw” and even costarred with Tim Curry in the murder-mystery comedy _Clue_ based on the board game.
We need to at least see Tim Curry play a live action Joker
Ya that would have been awesome if it wasn't for his current health
He's too old now. It wouldn't be much of a problem, though, if he hadn't had that stroke.
That would be interesting and kinda cool too
Yeah that’s never gonna happen. It would be cool if he played the role for like a quick reference or something
I feel like he could just voice another version of The Joker. I mean , he did some voice acting for Over the Garden Wall and he did great.
Only OGs remember when the subs were called Vee-Tards instead of Vee-Generates lmao
7:17 Batman Who Laughs prediction
Every time you say “clown prince of crime”, a bat gets his wings.
Wow. I didnt know this at all. It sounds like Mark Hamill perfected what Curry started.
Joker's Gang In bb would be cool( Video Make )
I like to see what’s your take on the 2004 Joker as I feel he is pretty underrated yet one of the most terrifying iterations.
Is it just me or did some of the Tim curry clips sound like John DiMaggio
If we grew up hearing Tim Curry’s Joker we would think Mark Hammil’s voice sounds weird.
I like to think in the alternate history Tim curry kept the role he would learn as the show went on how to play the role better as his own better knowing the character
IMO, Tim Curry's Joker sounds, in vocal tone and mannerisms, like Bender from Futurama, which is ironic given John DiMaggio voiced the Joker in the two Red Hood animated movies.
It reminds me of the old Hanna Barbara Batman cartoons. For sure...
Is it just me or do some of the Curry takes sound a lot more like Bender from Futurama than Joker?
Listening to Tim Curry's vocie as joker is kinda funny sounding.
Evidently Michael McKean's greatest terrifying clown performance is still "The Thaw" in Voyager
2:57 "tim plays the joker as if joker himself is the punchline, where mark played the joker, as if the joker is in on the joke, and his victims, are the punchline" and this is why mark hamill's take on the joker, results in an irreplaceable infamy, because that ideological angle, very much IS, The Joker.
The Clown Prince is very much Driven by the fact that all it takes for people to turn bad (allegedly ?) is for them to suffer enough and be warped and deformed by their endured traumas. The Joker himself is warped and deformed in his need to make others conform to this induced outcome, and 'realize the joke'. The Joker is neither the Joke or Punchline in and of itself, Joker is the comedian who sets up the joke and delivers (to) the punchline, to get others to react as desired.
Richard Rohan played Batman and the Joker (quite well IMO) in a few Graphic Audio productions.
6:52 I kinda like the joker’s version of him wearing a blue tie with formal suit, instead of tuxedo 🤵🏻
there's times where i think currys performance sound like the larry storch version and there's other times where he sounds like wayne cramp.
on a side note i always just assumed hail did the rat joker laugh but the scarecrow idea adds up perfect. as for the Loren Lester one that was great makes me wonder about the alt universe where we got him instead.
They should have used 90s Chris Tucker, “Batman! You got knocked the heck out! Ahahahahahahahahaha”
This put a smile on my face
“This is Hollywoods fault! The Joker! The Joker!”
I want that batman beyond video
In Be A Clown some of Tim Curry’s audio was used for an animatronic clown, and the disguise was clearly inspired by Pennywise. That being said the first few clips, sound like the Silver Age Jokers, specifically Larry Storch.
Rip mark Hamill
I kinda loved Michael McKean's silver age Joker as a kid, Loved that DKR Batman voice Michael Ironside did too.
He played the clown in star trek voyager ep the thaw in season 2 which was a good episode he was a bit creepy in it
I'm a fan of tim Curry but no lol he sounded too whinny
Not gonna lie tho, he played a damn good joker though. If you put that performance in a movie, it would rival Jack Nicholson.
Mark Hamill is the true voice of Joker and no one can top him
I'm honestly surprised no one tried to cast Tim Curry as the Joker in a different project not attached to Batman: TAS or the DCAU later down the line. Obviously, I mean before his unfortunate stroke in 2013. The man was a great voice actor, so I think he could've evolved the voice over time similar to Hamill.
This is Hollywood’s fault! The joker, the Joker!
🦇 👍
They should've had Tim Curry voice the Sliver Age Joker in "Legends of the Dark Knight" episode. Would've come full circle, plus his voice fits much better than the other actor.
Batman Beyond has a lotta of Jokers too and they were quite good villains lol.
You also have to realize that this is not cleaned up audio.
Definitely love hearing about Batman Beyond. Knew Tim Curry was originally cast, and at first was disappointed by Hamill, especially since he basically just used his Trickster voice from The Flash, however, Hamill as Joker just became very natural.
Michael McKean also played an evil clown-like character in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
I think that voice fits this joker better to be honest.
Vee infuso is more obsessed with the joker then batman I hope to see vee cover tmnt and other big series and some video games
1:59 😂
0:32 I can’t tell the difference
YOU FORGOT THE TWO LINES FROM LOBOTOMIZED JOKER FROM THE JUSTICE LEAGUE ANIMATED SERIES AT THE INSANE ASYLUM
LOOKED LIKE HAMILL JOKER AND SOUNDED SIMILAR
Makes sense since Tim played Pennywise
Might as well have Joker say “They All FLoooooooAaaaaaTttt!?!?”
This is hollywoods fault! the joker, THE JOKER
Honestly I like Tim curry version, kinda suits well with this design of joker.
Great video my man. Do you watch Loki? the Disney Plus show??
Tim curry sounds so damn good tho ngl
Tim Curry is a part of my childhood. He was in a ton of stuff I watched as a kid, and he was always the bad guy...and he was always very VERY good at being the bad guy. He could be scary! One minute he's a bit withdrawn, with some sense of ego of and sinister aura...then, he just goes full on evil...and YIPES. He will SCARE you. When asked about why he takes so many villiaous roles he said "Because...I get to have more fun!"
😂👍
do jokers gang and batman beyond =) long video =)
This makes all the sense when you look at Mark’s first three appearances as the character, especially the Christmas episode. There’s something just…off about his performance there
disagree on the christmas episode but something about the be a clown always seemed strange to me
@@doublespinkid2093 I dunno, Mark seemed more subdued than normal in the Christmas episode, which I kinda get as he was acting like a Mr Rogers style TV host in the episode but something overall feels off when you compare it to Joker’s Favour where the role seems to finally be 100% his and not hampered by having to fit the animations made for Curry
Hearing someone elses voice come out of TAS joker that isn't mark hamill is so freaking weird to me
I also recall reading somewhere that Mark Hamill auditioned to voice Hank Hill, is this true!?
The rumor is that Tim Curry's Joker was "too terrifying" for children, but I think the truth is just that it wasn't very good.
This is Hollywood's fault. The Joker! The Joker!
Side note, people rarely catch this but in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker's climax, Will Friedele mocks the joker an it's clear that for a moment he emulates mark Hamill's laugh for a moment. I always thought was an inspired choice because Mark's little chuckle into laugh is so distinct(I always just call it a Hyena laugh)
Nah, i actually think on darcy pedross for the btas joker.... Because i watched it dubbed
I like Tim Curry in other roles. This isn't a critisizem against him, but a lot of the lines he gave sounded more whiny. Especially the way he says "Batman". I do love Tim Curry's laugh as the character.
Maybe the thing about him being sick when he rocorded his lines is true cause he does sound more nasily.
This is Hollywood's fault! The joker! The joker!
