I saw this opening day. Xmas Day 1993. Hands down the most gratifying Batman movie theater experience for me. It's somehow an opera without singing. I'm glad I was in my 20s when this and the animated series came out. Not sure if I would've appreciated this as much as a kid. When the Joker came out for the first time at the decrepit World's Fair, the audience gave the biggest applause I've ever seen at a movie theater. I know you don't dig his origin. I personally love it
The early Bruce timm Batman movies are all top tier to me in their own ways. The mask of the phantasm is the best, return of the joker is just legendary, subzero is so heart wrenching , even mystery of the batwoman is amazing
"The abscence of their humanity is what robbed me of mine. And now you come by night, to stop me? To preserve their way of life?! Batman you are a cad..."
I think the movie implies that Bruce thinks if he didn't stop being Batman to Mary Andrea he could've saved her father and feels personally responsible, as if his parents are punished him for being happy
I respect your opinion Vee, but for me Phantasm will always be number 1, no other Batman movie has made me feel the same as when I watch that film. I know it's not a perfect film in practice, but for me it feels like a perfect film if that makes sense. Thanks for the shout out man. :)
Agreed when you watch phantasm as a kid it feels like an Epic, as an adult just as much but I remember I did not feel the same way I did watching Batman begins as I did phantasm for the first time
I love your videos dude. You're the ultimate batman authority. That being said, I'd really love to see you review all the animated Spawn movies. There's a connection to batman in the Spawn comics as well that would probably give you a ton of material.
@anikejulien7273 never heard of Spawn? Oh, he's an interesting one. There was a story that wasn't technically canon where Spawn and batman teamed up. But batman threw a batarang into spawns face, just because he could, and Spawn used an old shoelace to tie his ugly mug back together. Again, the story isn't canon, but that shoelace made it into Spawns main story and becomes a huge plot point.
Sub zero is in my top 3 , Barbara only being in her batgirl out fit for a short scene isn’t a problem because of the great writing . If you haven’t seen it you should
Mystery of the Batwoman is Phantasm compared to batman and harley quinn. Paul Dini was badly needed for that one. It was like if bruce timm was little kid again who just found his dad's playboy.
36:40 Betcha Never by Cherie is one of my favorite songs because this movie, gives more of a spy vibe to Batman but also fits Batman’s relationship with catwoman which is why I made an AMV for them using that song!
I've seen the show and a one or two of the movies. Since I love the animation style and the way this version tells the stories/shows the depth of a character, I will definitely be writing down recommendations from the commments. When watching the show and the movies it really clicked for me why I felt the dc universe, especially batman related characters were so engaging. I dont know if there's a name for the story telling technique they used, but I love it and the characters! Thank you for these videos. I have no one to rant about this stuff with, so it's nice to hear someone do it to me while I agree or disagree internally lol.
Kevin Conroy *IS* Batman for animation and video games. Dietrich badger did a decent job when the series went the comedy route. The various other voice actors in the animated movies were okay.
I don't disagree. But I wish they used Jeremy Sisto more than once as the voice of Batman. He voiced him in JL: The New Frontier. I also like Rino Ramono
Had mask of the phantasm on VHS owned it for many years until I accidentally gave it away not knowing how much it would be worth now especially with the comic book that was included and subzero was a solid movie and batwoman good movie to great video V
Saw this in a theater. (It was almost released straight to video, but I'm glad it wasn't. I'm glad it got to be a "real" movie.) Haven't seen it in decades, but I'll never forget it. I was very impressed by PHANTASM's breathtaking visuals, but the story was not my favorite. Too violent for my tastes back then (although the opening fight scene and chase are excellent) and too many flashbacks. In retrospect, the Joker was the best part of the movie. The frozen smiles on his victims genuinely unnerved me, and his pre-Ace Chemicals incarnation left a deep impression on me as well. That version is actually more frightening than the clown, in part because he never speaks, except to make a growling noise at Andrea. And the fact that most of the time he's sitting in the car or just standing there, waiting. Very suspenseful.
These animated films (up to and including Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker) are BY FAR the best Batman films ever committed to tape. Better than the "Dark Knight Trilogy", better than Tim Burton's "Batman" flicks, better than the 60's show, and better than my favorite version of Batman... Ben Affleck in BvJ and ZSJL. They have the best Batman, the best Joker, the best soundtrack, the best stories, the best... well, everything. Put simply? They're animated cinematic perfection, each one a little better than the previous ones. "Sub-Zero" and "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker" are tied as my favorites. The only Batman story that even comes close to matching these is "The Arkham Trilogy" of video games.
I dont know if it’s a controversial opinion, but The Batman is not only my favorite Batman movie but one of my favorite movies in general. It’s one of the best movies period, in years.
Betcha never. I was trying to remember the song that was in yhe batwoman movie. Amd now I can't grt ut out of my head. It was Betcha Never. As for me, I love all of Bateman movies because they all shows different aspects of the caped crusader and how he is unique in the world of superheroes. But as i wayched some of the bat lore I come to realize that of you look at it from a different post of view, Batman is a pretty dark and psychotic superhero and has bigger issues than the villains he fights. Ill leave thst there for now. All in all it was a great review.
Mask of the phantasm is a very good movie, that adapts a very bad comic (Batman year two). Sub-Zero is ok, but basically just a pretty long episode of the series. I liked the gimmick of Mistery of Batwoman ( they even hired a 4th actress to play BW so we wouldn't guess wich one was). They're basically Helena Bertineli (specially the version from Arrow) Renee Montoya and not Barbara Gordon version of Oracle (or a Felicity Smoak?) so they were basically the Birds of Prey, and a better version than the live action movie.
Shredder isn't a pushover in it and it gave us the scariest versions of Joker and Harley there animal forms it might not be my favorite animated Ninja Turtles movie or animated Batman movie but it is one of the better cross overs in years
@@emperortrevornorton3119 it is a really great movie though it's really difficult to beat the first Ninja Turtles movie or be in the top 5 Batman movies
Batwoman here and The CW Batwoman feel like drastically different characters and neither of them good and all the ones I would rather see, were never in the TAS time line.
Mask of the Phantasm was alright but I think that movie is more about the origin of the Joker ( Sure that the movie is mainly about how Batman & the Phantasm 1st met but the main focus is on the Joker & his past before becoming the Clown Prince of Crime ).
I disagree. The Joker's origins are merely hinted at in that movie. The Joker is far from being the focus of the movie with his relationship to Batman not being explored nearly as much as Bruce and Andrea's or Bruce and Batman's.
@@robertfrazier6563 but he only gets three scenes in the flashbacks and two of them are just different perspectives of the same scene. The one thing I never liked about the Batwoman costume, is that the costume has a belly button. On the upside, you can argue that some of the tech of the Batwoman costume, eventually goes into the Beyond costume (i.e. the mask).
Mask of the phantasm is one of the best movies I have ever seen, fight me.
I won’t fight you, I’ll fight beside you
I'm sure that no one disagrees with you
Agreed
If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword!

Mask of the Phantasm is the only one that actually felt like a movie. The others felt like feature length episodes of the show.
there was a comic batman animated series, called the return of the phantasm,
Mystery of the Batwoman is Phantasm compared to batman and harley quinn. Paul Dini was badly needed for that one. It was like if bruce timm was little kid again who just found his dad's playboy.
Even the title of Mask of the Phantasm is genius. Bruce is the real Mask not Batman, whose mask is Andrea well just look at the title
I actually don't mind that joker was once a grunt in the mob. It would add to his origins of why he doesn't like taking orders from anyone.
36:40 Betcha Never by Cherie is one of my favorite songs because this movie, gives more of a spy vibe to Batman but also fits Batman’s relationship with catwoman which is why I made an AMV for them using that song!

I did some research and there's a reason we never heard her again. She died November 11th 1999
Mask of the phantasm was not for kids 🤣🤣🤣. However that is what made it beautiful and awesome
Mask of the Phantasm, Mystery Of The Batwoman, Sub-Zero is my order in turns of favorites …🖖🏾

Does anyone know what the animation style for The Batman Animated Series is called?
It’s a angular style, look up timm style on tv tropes for more details
@@AndreNitroX thank you!!
I do like the idea where Batwoman has multiple women behind the mask. It's a way to throw off people trying to find out Batwoman's secret identity.
I’d say heroes definitely do go down on their girlfriends.. and we don’t all wear capes lmao
