      I am the same way. I also hate how arbitrary a balk call can be. One pitcher can make the same move in one game and get no call but then do the same thing the next day with a completely different umpire crew and get called for it.

      BALK RULES! IMPORTANT!
      1. You can't just be up there and just doin' a balk like that.
      1a. A balk is when you
      1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the
      1c. Let me start over
      1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that.
      1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that.
      1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense?
      1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it.
      1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about.
      1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X.
      1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse.
      1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic...
      1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of
      2. Do not do a balk please.

      I know exactly what a balk is, I know that a catcher can balk, did anyone know that? As someone who was an umpire in the semi professional level. I would have never called that, it was absurd and that ump wanted the Dodgers to win it’s so obvious and blatant. That ump needs to go back to Umpire school because he sucks and is bias and there’s no place for that in any sport.

    • @Neelo5000

      This is extremely validating as someone who has only ever casually observed baseball. First time I ever heard of a balk was on a jomboy video, I tried to look up what it meant and immediately became confused. As far as I can tell, if the pitcher randomly exists incorrectly while on the mound then it’s a balk.

    • @laynierae2396
      @laynierae2396 11 місяців тому +26

      @@misterhat6395 haha okay so the players on the bases can sprint to the next base at essentially any point. They are held back because everyone can throw the ball much faster than they can run. So the best time to run is when the pitcher is winding up to throw the pitch, as everyone is focused on that and the catcher (who can see everything and all the runners) has to wait until the ball is all the way to them to try and throw them out. But it's shite if the pitcher can do his whole windup and then say SIKE and flip around and throw the runner out. So essentially once he starts his IM SERIOUS TO PITCH HERE windup, he cannot just stop it midway or even partially to "trick" the runner. A balk is basically saying the pitcher was too far in his IM PITCHING windup to abort.
      It's like in football (soccer to some places), during a penalty kick. You cant sprint up to the ball and pretend to kick it and say JK JK got you flinching, and then do it again. Hope that makes any sense lol

    I was at this game! That whole inning really deserves a breakdown, it was wild even before the balk. It started with 3 convective walks, including a 9 pitch at bat that started 0-2. 1 run scored on a sac fly, then Outman hit a ball to the wall that somehow wedged in between a fenced section and the pad halfway up the wall for a ground rule double. If that ball doesn't wedge, the balk run likely scores before this video even starts. The Dodgers ended up sending 8 men to the plate and scoring 3 to turn a 7-5 game into 8-7, all with just a single hit!

      Because it’s very hard to command and is a worse version of a change up unless you have ridiculous control of it. A splitter is exclusively a swing and miss pitch, so it’s pretty useless unless you’re in a 1-2 or an 0-2 count. A change up can be thrown for a strike consistently and used to induce ground balls
      Also, it puts way more stress on your elbow from the grip. No 11-year-old should be throwing that, and you’re very lucky if you never got hurt

    • @mikel2d384
      @mikel2d384 11 місяців тому +2

      @dleeliv it’s not a terrible call. Had this conversation with someone else too and I think the easiest way to explain it is this. Break up the knee bend from the step off as two different actions. His first action was the knee bend, his second action is the step off. Imagine then, if after his first action (the bend) he decided to come set (or perform any other action). The illusion is that the knee bend is an action to disengage the rubber which enables the pitcher more freedom (pitchers can even pick off from the rubber even if they aren’t set) so the motion of that knee bend is indicative that the pitcher is about to do something, only he doesn’t. It’s clear he tries to quickly cover it up by stepping off - in his defense that was his best option. It was unnatural move and is something he never does. Runners can see this as danger to them and is therefore deception. Any movement from Stanek that isn’t coming set means there could be a timing play on them.
      It’s the right call, it’s just not the most egregious example of a balk. It’s a shame, but not an ump show call.

The jerk Ump told the kid that it was up to his coach to explain it. The Ump went on to call a balk on the next 3 consecutive pitches. The kid rightfully lost it and started cussing out the Ump. A lot of parents got upset, including ones from the other team. Kid got thrown out. His coach ended up getting thrown out. The worst thing of the whole situation is that my nephew's team wasn't very good so they were already losing the game by a bunch when this all happened. The knee was a motion toward home plate prior to stepping off. Aka start stop balk.

      Hopefully this will help you understand the actual kind of ways a balk occurs.

    If a pitcher was allowed to twitch, or bend his knee like that without having to pitch the ball, the pitcher could just stand there twitching trying to bait/confuse the runner into stealing when really the pitcher is going to step off and easily pick off the runner. Worst case the pitcher would have confused the runner enough to not even attempt a Stolen base. Thats why the balk rule exists. Without the balk rule, there would be no stolen bases. And you would be seeing pitchers do some really weird ish before they actually went into their wind up.

      He bent his knee to lift his foot in order to step off. Explain how you step off with a peg leg and no knee bend. It's ludicrous. Every step off starts with a knee bend.

      The balk keeps baseball honest, the alternative is incentivizing pitchers to get better at faking out runners and batters rather than pitching the ball. There are lots of ways to fake people out, the balk rule is there to catch all of them

      As an Astros fan, this is absolutely, 100% the correct take. It's a balk. It shouldn't be, but it is. You can argue that in that moment in a tie game with a runner on 3rd it's the wrong call from a "spirit of the game" application, but it is a balk.

    That was a balk all day. Jomboy, the pitcher doesn't have to intentionally try to deceive the runner or hitter for a balk to be called. He clearly bent his back leg before he took his foot off. What is the baserunner key was the back leg, and he takes off as soon as the back leg is moving, then the pitcher steps off and picks off the runner. BS...a balk is a balk, the rule is in place for a reason, and dude balked, period.

    I help coach a 3A baseball team, and during a game, which was officiated by an ump that we've never seen before, called 3 balks on our pitcher for the silliest movement. So I can say that without a shadow of a doubt, I have no idea what is or isn't a balk.

    Honestly the worst part is the balk rule is just about deceiving the runner. But the runners are on second and third here, they obviously aren’t going to run so how on earth would he be deceiving them here? And yes technically it’s a balk by rule but just barely. This ump probably calls this 1 out of 10 times just because it’s so slight he probably doesn’t even see it most of the time.
