I have to mention the "In Tapu Fini's Mist" episode from Sun and Moon-where Mallow got to make peace with her deceased mother and Litten(now evolved) got to reunite with that Stoutland-and the goodbye moment between Ash and Brock at the end of Diamond and Pearl. That was the end of a 13-year era at that point.

Watching Ash, Misty, & Brock going their separate ways, & Ash realizing even with them gone he's never truly alone.
Wasn’t that sad! For starters, Brock traveled in almost every single region with Ash, and we saw them again in Alola, like three times, Once in Kanto. And the were the last 10 episodes of Journeys or whatever.

I thought Ash’s Revival would be higher on the list. Pikachu’s attempts to defibrillate Ash make it all the more heart wrenching because of Pikachu’s desperation to save Ash but also the fact that Pikachu knows how to defibrillate someone meaning he’s had to do it before and doesn’t want to see another friend die.
For me the most emotional moment was when Ash and his Pokemon were lost in a snowstorm and tried to make Pikachu enter his Pokeball but instead Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle and Pidgeotto came out and everyone embraced

The moment in Pokémon that made me cry was in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, when Lucario died, I actually shed some tears.

@@hopstew7756Probably because the movie didn't get a wide western release. (After the 4th movie, the movies went straight to DVD, event Pokemon are given through GameStop instead of in theaters like in Japan.)

Butterfree's goodbye & Ash "dying" in the Movie always get me
Im a grown man but I legit cried in two occasions in this series.
When Mallow tried to reconcile with her dead mother's soul since the last words she told her mother before she passed away was..."I hate you".
Also when Mohn's memories came back and his entire family cries out of joy for finally getting the father back in their family.
Surprised the ending of SM isn't here. That scene with Ash, Kukui, and Burnet hugging each other always gets my nose running. Ain't no surprise Burnet and Kukui had a kid next time they saw Ash. He really did change their life.
I agree with all of these especially Pikachu’s Goodbye I always remember crying every time I watched that episode as a kid and even though I already knew Pikachu was going to stay with Ash I still always cried especially when that song The Time has come plays and we see some flashbacks of Ash and Pikachu’s adventures as of that time but I also cried of joy when Pikachu and Ash reunited at the end
While I agree with all the moments on this list, I will say that Sun and Moon had a significant number of emotional moments, not just Stoutland and Litten which is still heartbreaking. Here’s a few that stick out to me: Mallow’s relationship with her mom and how she reunites with her mom in the mist. The ending of Sun and Moon as a whole since Ash now treats the region as a second home and treats all his companions there as family. And even though it happens in Journeys, the trauma Lusamine, Gladion, and Lillie went through when they eventually found the father and them accepting Nihilego into their family. 😊
And as a resident XY anime enjoyer, while I am definitely biased, I do think (A) Serena’s emotional breakdown in front of Fennekin and Pancham that led to her cutting her hair to let go of her past unfortunate moments in the contests (B) Clemont shutting down Clemont, (C) Bonnie crying as she sings Squishy’s song, and (D) Greninja leaving could also count here.
Been watching the series for years, so I've cried a couple of times with some of these scenes. See ya later, Ash.
Throughout my time watching Pokemon, Pikachu crying always breaks me. It did when I was a kid watching the first movie, and again during the reboot movie “I choose you” and it still does everytime I watch those scenes as a 28 year old man 😂.
I've been watching Pokemon for years, I've cried a few times but no episode made me cry more than One Journey Ends, Another Begins..." Seeing Litten taking care of Stoudland was very heartwarming and Stoutland trying to teach Litten Fire Fang at the time was amazing. But during that episode even I knew Stoutland's time was almost at it's end... Even seeing Nurse Joy talking to Ash about the old Pokemon's condition but not being able to hear cuz the door shut after Litten went in showed that they don't want young viewers to outright hear whats going on but the expressions and body language was more than enough. Then Stoutland passed away and left Litten so distraught and it made me cry ugly.
This episode also reminds us that Pokemon are living beings too, not just pets and partners. If you remember the Pokemon Tower's in various games then you'd understand completely.
Seeing Ash cradle Celebi’s wilted body made me cry so much when I first saw it. I never imagined Pokemon would kill off such a cute creature like that 😭
The episode with Mallow apologizing hr deceased Mom, and the reunion of Lusamine's family with Mohn are one of my tear jerker episodes.
Each and everyone of these moments made me cry. Some made me cry harder than others, but each one had a hard feeling in my heart. I think Lapras leaving for the first time was sad as well. I really hope that Ash will be seen again in the anime. It just isn't the same without him.
No honorable mention on Bulbasuar's "death", Piplup doesn't want to say goodbye (along with Dedenne), Pikachu turns to stone, Lucario's Death, Bonnie says goodbye to Tyrantrum, Pikachu wants to be with Ash (I Choose You movie), & Mallow reunites with her mom?

What a beautiful yet sad list...each of those episodes really hit with no punches pulled! But the one who really got me was Litten and stoutland...in a way it reminded me of the lion king! Both Simba and Litten cried out for the one they loved the most and both had moments where they saw them in the sky...also that episode came right as I lost my Best friend so it really hit me
Pikachus good bye was sadish , I just knew he was gonna reject it and come back to ash because most Iconic character leaving? the show wouldnt be the same
I was going to really think Litten and Stoutland's one was gonna be #1 since that was probably the closest I've ever felt to crying in all of my 24 years watching Pokemon since Season 1.
But Pikachu's Goodbye was also a very close 1st in my opinion on this list so I'll accept those both as the #1 and #2.
Some really sad scenes for me, and I've probably forgotten a bunch:
- Stoutland's death in One Journey Ends, Another Begins, and his attempts to teach Litten Fire Fang despite being on his deathbed.
- Memories in the Mist: Mallow and her mother
- Any time a Pokémon was released was extraordinarily sad, but there were some that hit much harder than others. I won't get into Pikachu since he was never released, but Butterfree, Charizard, Arbok and Weezing, Togetic, Goodra, and Greninja seem to arouse far more emotion than Primeape, Pidgeot (who thank goodness returned), Lapras, Squirtle, Vulpix, and Ambipom.
- Just as much as Ash dying, watching Pikachu get slapped again and again by his clone, and still not retaliate. He was turning the other cheek the whole time.
- Celebi's death in M4.
- May saying goodbye to Manaphy, even though the movie overall was far from my favorite.
- Latios' death in M5 to save Alto Mare and form a Soul Dew
- Lucario's death in M8
- Top Down Training and the entire Hearthome Tag Battle arc culminating with Tears for Fears. The amount of abuse Chimchar endured was so heartbreaking, and you could tell it was on the brink of death because Paul refused to heal it or let it rest, and had Torterra, Elekid, Ursaring, Murkrow, and Weavile attacking it mercilessly. Tears for Fears was even more sad, because of all the flashbacks.
- Also, I really wanted Brock and Holly to find love with each other, but Holly left without saying goodbye because she wanted to get stronger for Brock.
- Memories are made of Bliss, Piplup was so heartbroken to leave his friends, especially Pikachu.
- Team Rocket murdering Marowak, Cubone's mother, in Origins. In the Kanto games, NPC's in Lavender Town talk about it a little, but seeing it live in Origins, really really sad.
- The whole Fugitive arc in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
- After defeating Rayquaza, you say goodbye to your partner, and return to being a human. Needless to say, choosing to remain a Pokémon and being with your partner again is one of my happiest moments
- Gengar fails to lift Ninetales' curse on Gardevoir, but finally after he admits his mistakes and pleads Ninetales finally lifts the curse and Gardevoir returns.
Your eyes use tears.

IKR. I saw Mewtwo Strikes Back when I was younger and the moment where Ash “dies” was so heartbreaking and seeing all those Pokémon crying makes me cry too! 😢😭

The song to Pikachu’s Goodbye makes me cry all the time bc it reminds me of my dads death. His goodbye, it was heartbreaking
It's always the sad moments that are some of the most iconic moments of the Pokemon series.
Man-I still tear up over Celebi. That one was rough.
Yeah, and not only having Ash cry, but EVERYBODY else crying over Celebi too (Pikachu, Misty, Togepi, Brock, Sam, Diana, White, Towa, Suicune, and ALL of the forest Pokemon); that's worse than too much, it's hardcore! 😭

End of the battle with Leon was the only moment that totally made me cry. The moment after Pikachu sees all he's past and current pals and afterwards when original theme starts to play during the battle hit me so hard. Still can't watch that episode without crying out loud. Such an amazing moment.
The show have done a good job handling emotional themes including death, parting ways with friends and Pokémon and dealing with losing. I would also add The Right Hero for the Right Job with Bonnie trying to free Zygarde from its control and when Clembot sacrifices himself, Memories in the Mist which covers the death of Mellow's Mother, Chimecho's departure, Chimchar and Tepig's backstory when they were abused, Do I hear a Ralts? and The Homecoming Crown! when Lillie and her family reunites with their father.

Looking back on Ash and Pikachu’s many adventures in Pokémon some of the most memorable and saddest moments for me are Bye Bye Butterfree, Just waiting on a friend with Ninetails, Pikachu’s Goodbye, the Death of Celebi in Movie 4, Lucario’s Sacrifice, the Revival of Ash in the first movie and in the movie I chose you when Pikachu speaks to Ash saying that it wants to be with him always.Thank you Ash, Pikachu, Misty and Brock for being a huge part of my childhood over the last 25 years and best wishes until we meet again 👍❤️
Whoa Whoa Whoa!!! The episode from Sun and Moon; Memories in the Mist, where Mallow see her mom's spirit and Litten sees Stoutland again isn't on here?!?! That one was really slept on because I cried my eyes out to that!!!

17:35 is the best ever scene as it makes us not only emotional but there is a mixed feeling which is unexplainable....probably the best ever parting ways of any ash and friends , signifying the end of an era

Fun fact! I met Litten’s English voice actress Lisa Ortiz at Youmacon in Detroit a few years ago and she told me that her friend adopted a cat around the same time as the recording of Ash obtaining Litten.
All of those farewells to former friends defintiely made me cry.
But there was also one that had this girl talking about seeing the stars all the time and while people thought it was due to the Unown being evil, it was in reality because she was friends with a Cleffa and while they didn't really flat out say it, it was clear the Cleffa had died and became a star.
I cried at anything remotely cute as well, like Pinsir and Heracross acting cute in Journeys, but that's me being sensitive to anything adorable nowadays and basically being broken after multiple family tragedies in multiple years in a row.
I swear almost all of these made me cry at least once. Another good one I think was Dawn’s Piplup not knowing how to part ways with Ash and Pikachu and Brock
Sometimes it can be hard for us to experience something like these.
The only episode of the Pokemon anime series that I cried from was season 22 episode 17 (Alola Region season 3). When this video here is complete, I was hoping to see that episode on that list but in the end, Kanto got the fame of having the most tearful moments. My heart was pounding when I was getting close to the #1 spot but Kanto wins this list. Despite that, I was not disappointed about it. Still, season 22 episode 17 was still a tearful episode. I wish that episode was on that list.
There are a lot of moments that I'm surprised got shafted training from Amber 2's death, everyone dying at the end of the 8th movie, Clembot's death, Alain abandoning Marin after Chespie falls into a coma and many more. But the one moment that should've made this list was the entire premise of Memories in the Mist where Mallow is reunited with the spirit of her deceased mother whom she abandoned before her death after she was repeatedly hospitalized by an illness. To make this episode more depressing, Ash and Torracat are reunited with Stoutland's spirit, giving us full confirmation that he did indeed die.
I think the four scenes that got me were Stoutland’s death, Luxray’s death, Mallow’s reunion with her mother, and Ash’s story coming to a close
Bye Bye Butterfree tore me up back in the day.🥹

SM Ash leaving Kukui & Burnet should have been #1 or at least an honorable mention especially when they surprise him with a new baby

For me, and I feel like this isn’t getting any love here, one of the saddest moments I’ve watched was in Pokémon Heroes when Latios died sacrificing himself. Seeing Latias cry got me

A poor kid freezing outside and Luxray sacrificing himself to save his trainer...
When we see it half frozen but looking so peaceful despite he died, when the kid was saved but saw it's Luxray dead frozen, my heart sank.
And when we have in memories Ash's pokemons refusing to stay in their pokeballs to help Ash surviving the cold together, nore heartbreaking when that kid lost it's Luxray.
Serena cutting her hair, Mallow's backstory and Dawn crying after losing lots of contests should all be there
The one part from Zoroark Master of Illusions where Zorua is with her Mema but the mother that cared for her decided to not move and I literally bawled my eyes out bcuz it reminded me of my father and I. I loved it so much and that sweet moment really stings me.
I can not believe Mallow reuniting with her mom is not here. It was literally one of the only episodes that actually made me cry.
Some of these moments I first saw when I was young, most others more recently in preparation for Ash's departure, but this whole list got me misty-eyed for showing people's true bond with their Pokemon and others. Also, I figured Ash leaving Pikachu would be near the top if not at number 1.
The episode where Lillie, Gladion, and Lusamine find Mohn made me cry many tears of happiness and relief. And I cried even more when they invited Lillie the Shiny Nihilego into their family. 🥹
That episode focusing jessie and wobaffet in sun and moon was also very emotional
Togepi and Manaphy both imprinted on Misty and May, so its like mothers saying goodbye to their children. Ninetales in Just Waiting On a Friend is based on the true story of Hachikō. The ep of Meowth learned to talk, don't forget he learned to walk o his hind legs to.

Mallow’s episode in Sun & Moon about her mom being reincarnated as a Shaymin not being here is criminal! Also the episode with Lillie, Lusamine and Gladion reuniting with Mohn was a tear jerker. 😭
I thought the reunion episode was a tearjerker episode was tearjerking too, especially because Mohn didn’t seem to recognize them at all!
Mallow meeting her deceased mother and both the mother and daughter thanking each other for being a part of each other's lives gets me teared up every time.
I have my qualms about the order of some of these, because while I did SOB with stuff like Bye Bye Butterfree and Bye Bye Pikachu (Agree on that for #1 though) or Ash "dying" in the first movie, I was like 6 at the time, Ash becoming the world champion broke me down sobbing AS AN ADULT

I'm kinda surprised the episode where Kiawe was undergoing a challenge for Tapu Fini or the episode where Hapu became the Island Kahuna did not get mentioned at all.
Starting off, the old man who gave the challenge to Kiawe in the first place had recently passed away not too long before Ash and Company arrived on the island. This old man was Hapu's grandfather and was the previous Island Kahuna.
A few episodes later, Tapu Fini gives a test that can only be completed when the new Island Kahuna takes her place. Tapu Fini temporarily brings back people who have died that were close to the Protagonists. Stoutland comes back to teach Fire Blast to Torracat before giving the goodbye that it wasn't able to give before death. Mallow's mother had passed away when she was little and the two of them were able to have one last conversation and Mallow was finally able to come to terms with what happened. And lastly, Hapu had to face her grandfather again where she learned what she needed to in order to become the Island Kahuna and complete the test. That episode hit me in the feels just as hard as the #2 entry did.
