Red. Also no Legends Arceus is taking place about 600 years in the past as Cynthia confirmed in the movie made for Legends Arceus also the only way to play as the sinnoh protagonists in Legends Arceus is if they were hit with roar of time and spacial rend at the same time.
In Pokémon Masters EX, there's also a scene where Selene tries some I think Curry, and describes it, pointing out what was missing. It's a reference to what happens when you eat at a restaurant in the Alola games. It was really funny too. (Sorry if my English isn't the best, I have a hard time describing things like this)
I love things like those, it's on the same level of creativity as when in Ben 10 Omniverse, the reason for the artstyle changes was blamed on Celestialsapiens, I found both these things hilarious when I first found out about them
In Masters EX, a swimmer tells Ellio and Selene "If I keep on paddling, I might just make it to Alola for some battling". Selene sits there for a solid 10 seconds with that blank stare before finally saying "Hey, that rhymes!"
@@CraftingGummi what's funny is that while she's described as a bit of an airhead in the games her manga counterpart is a highly intelligent person who tends to overthink a lot
@@lightyoshimanI haven't read that but the way you wrote it makes it sound like one of those "Taking the character's inner monologue out of X scene" videos where the character has 10,000 thoughts but in reality is just staring awkwardly.
I remember a friend of mine back in High School trying to explain that Elio and Selene act the way they do because they're new to the region, don't fully understand the language and customs, and are just winging it the best they can. The fact that Masters Ex has them zone out before finally speaking up that they don't know how to respond plays into that so well. I wish I could contact them about it.
They don't exactly zone out I would say, Selene is just kinda... slow.. while Elio seems to overthink a bit trying to determine the best response he can give, taking the Elesa joke bit while Elio was trying to come with a joke of his own to answer Elesa's Selene was still processing Elesa's joke.
For me gotta love Hilbert/Black, the 1st canonically protagonist to have a legendary Pokémon mascot as part of their team and main story, and I love how Black in the Manga acts and is with Pokémon and interactions with N
I wouldn't say he's my favourite protagonist, but I definitely relate to him the most. Mainly his focus problem. Oh how I wish I had a Munna to help me think clearly. XD
@@joegreen3802yeah Kinda don't like how they dropped the consistency of his ability in b2w2 adventures, munna just become a deus ex machina instead of him needing to actually "solve a puzzle" first But sadly no protag beats gen 3's Ruby and sapphire is truly peakology Emerald was fun too ig
@@ghetoknight7801 Yeah. B2W2 started kind of rushing things like the following arcs did. (Though to me, ORAS was the worst with that.). I kind of wonder if that's connected to Kusaka's current health problems. Hope he gets better. Ruby and Sapphire was great, though I think I prefer the Gen 4 protags myself as I really just liked the group dynamic between the three, but that's just me. For a single character, I'd probably go for Gold. As for Emerald, he's fine to me, but I didn't really like him that much if I'm being honest. Sorry about that.
I gotta love how the adventures manga adapts and shapes their characters to better fit the story. Though i will say the gen 3 remakes was clearly a very rough time for them as they suddenly had to make up an excuse to bring Archie and Maxie back from the dead
yea, I'm really glad cause I feel especially in the newer games theres a lot of loose ends or storylines not fully explained (likely do to cuts and deadlines) and adventures really helps to fill in the gaps
@@LegoCat88 I think in the manga that's just what their nicknames were. i know Y's name is Yvonne in the manga, but I don't remember what X's actual name was.
I don't think any protagonist will ever be as awesome to me as Brendan/May. Settling a gang war, riding on the back of a rampaging Groudon/ Kyogre, becoming pop stars, riding mega Rayquaza into space to blast through a meteor and then battle a space virus, these are the two coolest people ever.
True I consider them the coolest but Dawn and Lucas do come close same as Rei and Akari in either case they fought personifications of time and space and the latter fought literal god
@Haku He got warmth from Charizard's fire, got his food from Venusaur, and got his water from Blastoise. He built his ice hut with Lapras. He also got electricity from his Pikachu. I would say the man was literally a self-sustained demon with just those mons alone. And Snorlax was...uhm...a cushion for some good sleep.
Fun fact: In the most recent event in Pokemon Masters EX, Adaman and Irida actually meet Dawn and Lucas, and it's confirmed (as much as it can be in a mobile game) that they aren't Akari and Rei. They have a conversation about it due to the space-time distortion that brought the two there in the first place
Masters takes significant liberties with game canon to sidestep weird implications, it’s entirely possible they’re going with the idea that Akari and Rei are both the completely normal ancestors of Dawn and Lucas with no time travel involved.
6:15 there’s actually a reason why May never reunited with Ash in Pokémon Journeys. May’s Japanese voice actor has a disease that makes it hard for her to talk properly. The creators of the Pokémon anime thought it would be disrespectful if they just went and replaced her so they decided to leave May and Max on the side lines. Unfortunate yes, but it was their way of respecting May’s voice actor.
Another fun fact for both Elio and Selene in Pokemon Masters is that both are heavily implied to be siblings. They both moved from Kanto to Alola, and have a pet Meowth. They also like to appear together too, unlke other protagonist characters. Sinnoh kid trio in Pokemon Masters are kinda weird. Dawn having Torterra and Wormadam, Lucas having Infernape and Flareon correspond to the player character's chosen starter. So if Dawn the player in BDSP chose Infernape, Lucas the assistant will have Flareon even tho he would have Torterra. If Lucas the player chose Torterra as the starter, Dawn the assistant will have Wormadam in BDSP even tho should would have Empoleon there. As a side note, Barry's Empoleon, a water/steel type is weak against grass type moves due to he started with a Piplup, which is actually weak against grass type moves.
Wow, i could totally see that, out of all the pair of protagonists, Elio and Selene are the ones who are more likely to be siblings, even twins, imo. They have the most similar hair, and personality.
There actually is a thing to settle the weirdness with the Starters for Masters. Dawn and Lucas hail from BDSP and changed out Starters in the postgame because the Grand Underground starts spawning wild Starters. Something similar happens during the game’s trailers where they both generally use one consistently from one to the next but then they suddenly switch when they’re hunting Legendaries for the final one.
its funny that Red specifically is known as 'the one that doesnt talk' when basically every other player character is the same not just in pokemon but tons of other games
@@SuperUmizoomi I don't think that's the case cuz he has been silent since gen 2 But it's possible too,but it's certainly not masters' doing as he's silent in every game he appears in
It’s so fascinating to me that the overwhelming majority of canon protagonists are the girls. Dawn, Serena, Gloria, Akari(?). While Ethan and Hilbert are heavily implied to be the protagonists (and in the manga they are, as is Brendan) it’s not outright obvious as it is for the ladies… and red.
@@HY0 Elio is implied to be the main one, tho it can be hard to tell as both Elio ans Selene are implied to be siblings there. Idk where did anyone find Akari as the canon protagonist fact from. If anything, I think Rei is main one as in the TCG Akari is shown to be sleeping with her Pikachu, but it is TCG, so eh. Tho some reason most in the fandom seems to have a fascination on every single girl outside of gen 1 and gen 2 is the "canon" protagonist, aside from gen 3 which is somewhat 50/50.
@@rocksterphang7985 Ah I see! The gen 7 one always tripped me up because of the whole co-existing element, although the idea of them being siblings is actually really fun haha
@Rockster Phang well with Gen 3 the parents of the protag don't change with your gender canonically Brendan's father is Norman which only happens if you are male as choosing May gives you Norman as the father and the rivals father is always the Professor the only thing making this weird is that in the anime May's and Max's father actually is Norman
Fun fact! The gen 6 protagonists are canonically 16/17 because Emma, who is 16, says you're older than her. But presumably you're still a child so most people just say 17
I like how Masters brought some canon implications to most of the player protags. Red - obviously Ethan - rivals with Silver Lyra - fought Red once Kris - encountered Suicune Brendan - his father is Norman Dawn - Lucas is Rowan's assistant Hilbert - met N and was the one defeated Ghetsis Rosa - friends with Hugh Serena - Calem states that she was very silent when they first met, a trait to all silent protags Elio - Island Challenge and knows Masked Royal's identity Gloria - beats Eternatus with Hop and the legendary dogs And I'll list other protags that aren't actually canon protag in Masters. May - Birch is her father Lucas - lab assistant Hilda - Battle Subway trainer and have never met N Nate - Battle Subway trainer Calem - Grand Duke Selene - did not know the identity of the Masked Royal Victor - Gloria is the main protag who saved the region
@@sarthakarora3212 actually its Elio that are canon character according to trailer. Selene just there because they dont know what to do with her story considering she never appear if you choose Elio. She still have the mc background stories cause they dont want them to be out of character
This also implies that canonically, the protagonists of the games are: Red, Lyra, Brendan, Dawn, Hilbert, Serena, Elio & Gloria. the Johto protags are a little weird as: Ethan & Silver are frenemies - implies that Ethan never got to the Indigo Plateau for some reason, but knows Lance. Clair blew him off by claiming he cheated and not giving him the badge? Lyra fought Red on Mt. Moon - implies that she handed Champion!Lance his ass on a platter during the battle after the E4. Suicune chose Kris as his partner - this implies that it happened sometime after the battle with Pryce, but before Clair's gym. Corrections are welcome
Hilbert in Pokemon Adventures, aka Black in Adventures, has to be my favourite interpretation of the character and my favourite Adventures protagonist, I love how he's obsessed with beating the Pokemon league and his sacrifices at the end of the Black and White part was so sad, but absolutely epic.
@@nellewoodruff6337 yes, I love that too, the fact he is so obsessed with his dream that to properly think he needs his Pokemon to eat it, that's a genius concept.
@@nellewoodruff6337 this made me wonder who would come out on top red ruby black or X as each are depicted as being battle geniuses black is the only one with a restriction which he unintentionally place on himself but even with it on he is still pretty decent fighter
I loved Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, so I think that the characters being blank smiled dimwits is hilarious. Makes you think: "these kids beat Necrozma??"
The Florian and Juliana thing is interesting because, as of the Scarlet and Violet base game, they are the first time since Pokemon Crystal that the opposite-gendered protagonist has never featured as an NPC. In most games since Hoenn, the other gendered protagonist is either one of your rivals, or an NPC in the local battle facility. Elio and Selene are the only protags to get a complete fashion redesign within their own generation, likely to showcase the character customisation mechanics in SM/USUM. While Dawn and Lucas got new outfits in Platinum, they just got winterwear with no change in hats or hairstyle.
The manga actually addressed the mid-Gen change for Elio and Selene, in a rather unique way. They were trapped in ultra space for months. Literal months.
I would like to point out a minor discrepancy, the names for Blue and Green are actually reversed. The girl is named Blue until the FRLG and Emerald. There is a very prominent translator note explaining this on the chapter Vs. Deoxys of Pokémon Special/Adventures
It's not a discrepancy in the video as much as a discrepancy in translation. As you know, Red and Green were released as a pair in Japan but Red and Blue were released as a pair internationally. As such, the rival known as Green in Japanese is canonically named Blue in English, because it wouldn't make sense to call him Green in a market that never saw a release of Pokémon Green. Since he occupies the name Blue in English, the female trainer is canonically named Green. This is true in the manga as well; the official releases use the same localised names for Red, Blue, and Green as their game counterparts. If you're reading a copy of the manga that refers to the rival as Green and the girl as Blue, it's an unofficial scanlation that directly translates the Japanese names.
@@oakgreenoak Yeah, I'm aware of that, but I still refer to them as Green (Gary) and Blue (Leaf), even after the translation notes stating otherwise, mostly because it's technically correct as well.
@@harrimat100 same. I personally cringe when I hear people call the Female protagonist “Green”. Blue just sounds more elegant anyways for her. Plus, as someone who consumes more of the JP side of the fandom, I cannot ever switch Green and Blue’s names. Beside, Red and Green are meant to be opposites (like the colors suggest) and Blue is the nice balancing color between those two. And, all characters up to DPP eyes are supposed to match their names, Red has red eyes, Yellow and Gold have yellow eyes, Silver has grey eyes, and Green and Blue have their color eyes so I don’t understand why the official English for the Manga didn’t keep their JP names… sorry for my rant, it’s always been a pet peeve of mine when it comes to these two
@@saitohajime9939Personally, I find it weird to call her Blue, since her starter in Adventures is a Blastoise, and this would make her the only member of the original Kanto trio whose name matched their starter.
I like imaging Dawn retiring from being the Pokémon Champion after it becomes too stressful for her and becoming a NEET before Arkeas finds two problems and decides to solve both by throwing them both at eachother.
From what I remember of reading the Sun and Moon manga (which was absolutely insane by the way) Moon was an pharmacist and also had a cool bow and arrow that she used to catch Pokémon. Meanwhile Sun… he wanted money. Yeah that’s his main thing. He had a good reason though.
Here's a quick summary of the protagonist counterparts Red - Red: typical shounen protagonist Leaf/Green - Green (Blue in JP): con artist and self proclaimed rustle queen Ethan - Gold: daycare worker who loves gambling and is weak to pretty girls Kris - Crystal: wants to complete the pokedex and has a unique style of capturing by kicking pokeballs Brandon - Ruby: coordinator who's vain to a fault and thinks battles are barbaric May - Saphire: has advanced wild survival skills and borderline superhuman athleticism from helping her father with field research Lucas - Diamond: kind-hearted comedian who loves eating Dawn - Platinum: sheltered but curious rich girl Hilbert - Black: absolute battle maniac Hilda - White: founder and CEO of a Star agency for Pokemon musicals Calem - X: battle prodigy who became a shut-in after breaking down from the stress of being famous Serena - Y: rebellious child who wants to become a Sky Battler rather than following her mother's footsteps as a Ryhorn Jockey Elio - Sun: always on the sigma grind mindset trying to earn enough money to buy back his grandpa's Island Selene - Moon: Prodigy pharmaceutical researcher looking for materials to develop an antidote after one of her experiments went horribly wrong Victor - Soudo: stoic weapons smith looking for the legendary gear (rusted sword and rusted Shield) Gloria - Shildemilia: professor Magnolia's assistant and genius programmer / technician looking for her lost Pokémon
I am surprised that you didn't bring up Sapphire at all. She is wild. (Yes Pun intended) And I am still surprised that they didn't use the opportunity to have May's equivalent be named "Ruby". It was the one time it wouldn't have been weird.
@@ghetoknight7801 Nope Ruby is Brendan's Equivalent. Sapphire is May's Adventures Equivalent. Maybe they arbitrarily changed it it some regional translations?
Bonus: Hilda and Nate are both pretty much confirmed to be the counterpart that joins you for Multi Battles in the Subway in the Masters EX universe. Irida and Adaman both call Lucas and Dawn Rei and Akari, meaning that the protag of Arceus goes by that name as well. Given their implied spotty memory, it is unknown if whoever was dragged to the past mixed up their Japanese name with a slightly different variant
In Spanish, Red also speaks when he switches out a Pokemon (which, yes, CAN happen). Similarly to the Full Restore situation, the game dialogue box says [Trainer Red: CHARIZARD, come back!]
I don't play Pokémon Masters, but I always stay tuned for the story events that release. I think DeNA did a great job at breathing life into characters that didn't utter a single word in their games. It just warms my heart to see characters like Hilbert being laid back and morally upright and Hilda being hot-headed and competitive, it works for them and even though it doesn't jive well with everyone, it's great to see a different and in some cases canonical take on characters we play as in the games.
To add to Brendan's various names, he's also named Orlando in the ORAS demo. Unlike the other names in this video, there doesn’t seem to be any special reason for this. I was honestly surprised they didn't call him Ruby, like how the Sun and Moon demo called the protagonist Sun, and lining up with their manga names.
I am absolutely confident that the player character in Legends Arceus _is_ Dawn or Lucas, specifically the one from BDSP. Supporting this are the parallel character select screens, the unused modern room in PLA that matches the player's bedroom in BDSP, and the simple fact that Arceus would likely choose an experienced trainer to save the world of the past. Three or five years after becoming Sinnoh Champion, Dawn or Lucas are sent to Hisui.
For legends arceus we can actually tell what region our character is from by the pjs they wear in the opening. And interestingly enough they’re from different region
I assumed Akari was from Alola based on her outfit. She also looked similar to my UM protag the way I customized them both, with tan skin and dark brown hair and eyes.
Here's a neat coincidence: in my playthrough of Sword, I also set Gloria's gym challenge number to be 303. I haven't even read the manga, my favourite Pokemon just happens to be Mawile.
For akari and rei, they are the only pokemon protagonists who (assuming legends arceus doesn't have a direct follow up) are statistically far more likely to be dead than alive in the modern games
I personally believe Rei is the protagonist of pokemon legendz arceus, if it does end up being Dawn and Lucas, if it was the player character then Lucas would make the most sense, if hes canonically the professor's assistant in diamond and pearl then It makes perfect sense that he would be tasked with cataloging all the pokemon in Hisui, he was a pokemon professor's assistant so he would have experience with that
I wouldn't really use Pokémon Masters EX as confirmation for who's the canonical main character, it's been confirmed that Masters is its own separate timeline, and because other animated media like Evolutions don't have the same protagonists as Masters (Lucas and Hilda are the Protagonist in Evolutions, While in Masters, Lucas is the assistant and Hilda is the Battle Subway partner)
And Pomas not only occurs in a separate timeline, but also some of the characters come from different timelines/universe. One of the most notable examples is Cyrus. Who is partnered with Palkia, just like the Cyrus from the RR Episode in USUM, and during the event where you get him as a sync pair, Cheryl says that Cynthia told her that Cyrus' plans were foiled in the Distortion World, but the Cyrus in Masters doesn't recall that happening. So yeah, using Masters as canon is a bit tricky.
@@lnightshadell05 they actually don't care about your comment unless pokemon masters shows how multiverse works or the anime creates a specific arc which could shut up for good every annoying fan who thinks anime and games shares the same universe.
I mean, some things stay the same across the multiverse, series a lot, sometimes a little. I'd so while you're not wrong, there are definitely things that PokeMas does that seem like they would be canon regardless. Like Ellio and Selene spacing out all the time; that feels like it tracks.
You're not wrong about Rosa being a mascot for Masters. She was one of my first team members, along with Misty, Brock, and Blue. I don't know if that was intentional or just luck of the draw. Since then I've mostly gotten Gym Leaders and other random characters like that, though I did also get Leon during this 5 Star event featuring him, which was pretty surprising.
Fun fact Ruby/Brendan in the manga does pokemon contest while Sapphire/May does gym battles which is the only duo that does it opposite to the other protagonists. Also they are the only canonical couple among the protagonists in the Pokemon manga.
also in Pokemon Masters you can see how Brendan and May feel something for each other, plus the RSE/ORAS games are the first to introduce two protagonists who interact with each other, so it makes sense that in the manga they are a canon couple
Also, it is a pity that not all of these characters appeared in the anime, Serena is the last one who's from the games appear in the anime, love to see them all appear as well as the counterparts who are already in the anime to go along with such, maybe in Horizons or a spin off of the main anime like Cronicles was but in the Journey's/Horizon's artstyle as well as be Canon to such
Meanwhile Ash's existence in games was FINALLY acknowledged in Pokémon Masters Ex. Oh my gosh for like so long I have been waiting for Red and Ash to battle. That "I'll be waiting" was all I needed to see. Also on a side note, Ash used to get roasted real hard because he never existed in the game lmao.
@@sarthakarora3212 Oh yeah in Gen 7 games, I think there's a very very blurred picture that's supposed to be Ash and Pikachu inside some wooden shelter or something. I barely remember. He should have directly existed in the game from the very beginning if I do say so myself. Like even Jessie and James have been officially in the games but they just get way too reluctant about Ash.
@@ShadowSkyX Oh yeah that form is still called Ash Greninja even in games huh? That's very interesting. The more I think about it, more absurd it keeps getting thinking how the anime writers made him lose Pokémon league purposefully.
I loved the memes when Sword and Shield was first announced to be the UK where Gloria was depicted as an ornery Scotswoman. Also Victor and Gloria; Victory and Glory, how did I never put that together.
It's kind of funny to me in a messed up kind of way that Dawn, the canonically confirmed, most itsy bitsy, literally 10 y/o little girl is the one that got drama with arguably the most deities (including but not limited to God itself and its immediate children) Like damn Satan there's a baby lost in your private circle of hell
Funnier yet is how they aged Serena down for the manga but couldn't really change her design. So you have this 12 year old girl who's 162 cm tall and is at least a B cup
One thing that should be noted about voice acting in Japan, when a VA retires or passes away, as a show of respect, their characters are also usually retired. They may show up a bit here or there, but will almost never have any lines of dialogue
"Until Akari and Rei came along, Hilda and Hilbert were the oldest confirmed Pokémon protagonists at 14 years old" ACTUALLY In X and Y, Shauna states that she is 16 years old, and she also states she is YOUNGER than the player character, which makes Calem and Serena _at least_ 17. Just a fun piece of Pokémon lore :3
It is very likely fake unless there is a source. Their ages have never been released. In the anime Serena is ten, and in Pokespe XY they are twelve. If they had explicitly set their age, Pokespe would follow it.
@@ghetoknight7801 People dont say that they are youger/older unless there is at least there's the one year old difference. You can argue that Calem/Serena are is just a few days older than Shauna, but maybe the game takes place just after their birthday and just before her bithday. In conclusion is most likely that they are indeed 17.
This literally does not exist, there is absolutely no dialogue of Shauna stating her age or that she's younger than the player character, in fact the only character in XY with a confirmed age is Emma at 16.
I love how Pokemon Masters gave us canon protagonists for each generation (aside from gen 7) being Red, Ethan, Brendan, Dawn, Hilbert, Rosa, Serena, and Gloria!
The way they’ve handled Elio and Selene, I’m not gonna be surprised if they literally were both the protagonists, because it seems both of them moved it to Alola and both reference the story events, tho Selene is more focused on the Island Trials, while Elio talks more about Lillie.
@@sssspider I know that part, I just meant the true player character I guess. Gen 7 was different in everything, including protagonists, so I guess I should’ve phrased it better
I remember there being a side thing in Sun and Moon where you have to bring Prof. Kukui his mask so the fact that Elio knows he's the Masked Royal might imply that he's the real protagonist of the games, or Serene is just super oblivious.
Seeing the thumbnail, It made me remind of the Shipping I did between Red and Rosa back in the day, It's just the calm nature of Red and the Active and crazy nature of Rosa would work well lol
Oddly enough, I've found quite a bit of Red x Hilda artworks when looking up PokeMas fanarts in Pixiv. Guess battle craze duos work well to some, though iirc Gloria is still the only cross gen MC that Red has interacted with in PMEX so far.
I don't think the "confirmed to be the canon protag" ones really count, as EX doesn't take the actual player characters from the games but from this version of events, after all Red and Blue are in their 30s as of Sun and Moon, so you couldn't have kid Red interacting with current day Kukui unless it's not the main timeline.
The naming convention for the first few gens was (and still is) super confusing. Obviously Red is always Red but many still believe Ash is Reds anime counterpart. Blue (Rival) and Green (Female Protagonist) are swapped in Japan to correspond to how Pokémon Green released before Blue. In addition many believe Gary is Blues counterpart and Green/Leaf are the same character in the Manga but seemingly different characters in the Games since Green shows up in Let’s Go but Leaf in Masters EX. Ethan is know as that in HGSS and Masters, Gold in GSC and the Manga, and Jimmy in the amine with an actual Gold existing…maybe(?). Kris is a nickname for Crystal which is used in the Manga where she’s also Lyra but Lyra and Kris are different characters as confirmed by Masters EX. Oh and apparently as Marina in the anime with (yet again) Lyra being her own character. Thank Arkoos that they’ve been more consistent for future generations where they’re know by their game name or Manga name
Which is kinda weird because ash existing in the games universe has been a thing since gen 7 Where in the demo, ash quite litterally mails elio And in the mart, there's a picture of ash So honestly,I've never considered ash to be red's counterpart
Gary is indeed Blue's anime counterpart and Ash more or less represents all the male player characters as his outfit changes to match theirs Leaf and Green are on practice the same character and are interchangeable in external media Lyra and Kris are different characters as they are the female protagonists of different games. Kris being the protagonist for crystal while Lyra is the female protagonist for the gold and silver remmakes
I did know about the whole "Whitely was a Plasma grunt" thing however. Not because I've actually read the manga mind you, but because I spend an unhealthy amount of time on Bulbapedia. As for the SV protagonists actually being named, I just call Florian Zero after the Mega Man character. I heard that there was an Area Zero in the game (same name as the location from Mega Man Zero 4), so I ended up. I tried to actually look like Zero and, uh, I couldn't figure out how to make it look right so I gave up quickly. As a result you're just going to have to pretend that Florian is yelling WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOOR when the AI gets sent on a time tour. I didn't have a name for the female protagonist though.
Scarlet and Violet had full character customization...except for clothing. You know the part that everyone cares about the most and which almost every other Pokemon game that has had character customization has featured.
Depending on whether you read Pokemon Adventures/Special in Japanese or English, Blue as we know him is green, and Green/leaf is Blue in Japanese (their eye color reflects this). Anyway, if anyone hasn't read Pokemon Adventure it's a darn good manga :D
The Rei/Akari thing is pretty weird, since theoratically they aren't protagonists. The character you select is a 15 year old Dawn/Lucas and based on that descision either Rei or Akari exist in the world as a counterpart and possibly your ancestor. Reasoning for you playing Dawn/Lucas are: 1.) Arceus send you from another time into Hisui 2.) In that time you had a phone (so modern era) 3.) You are a prodigy in batteling and catching pokemon almost as if you are a regions champion 4.) Leftover code/graphics reveal a 3d-version of Dawn/Lucas room 5.) Your character like ingo suffers from light amnesia and doesn't remember anything especially regarding time travel
one of the best facts of pokemon games is how the Johto protag, Ethan's, literally the only backwards hat protag in the entire game series- we need deff more backwards hat protags-
One thing to note about Pokemon Masters, its using multiverse (Hoopa to be exact) as its justification for all the characters showing up, so it really can't be taken as exactly canon, as these are just versions of characters, in some cases their adventures happen in ways not possible in mainline games (hell, even in this video you pointed out how Lucas and Dawn's starters don't match up with Dawn being the protagonist). The most obvious case is Cyrus is strongly implied to be from DP, and had no idea what Cynthia was talking about when she brings up what the Platinum version of him did. There's also dialogue from the protagonists that don't line up exactly with how things happen in the game, like Leaf traveling alongside Red and Blue, there's also Kris, and Lyra just existing together and traveling Johto alongside Ethan, or it being stated that after being defeated by Gloria and Hop, Eternatus managed to escape, leading to Leon in Masters catching it instead of the protagonist (which in Masters would be Gloria).
"Full customization for the Scarlet and Violet protagonists" I'm inclined to agree until you get to their clothes. Then you have the choice of short sleeves and shorts or long sleeves and pants.
something i would like to say is that in pokemon adventures, ruby was shown to have come from goldenrod instead of olivine, which I think is pretty interesting
I think both are accurate, Norman was likely the Olivine gym leader before Jasmine took over when he got demoted by the Pokémon League. But his family likely lived in Goldenrod because the school was there.
One thing I noticed recently is that the shirt worn by Rosa from B2/W2 shares the same color scheme as the uniform of Team Plasma during the events of B/W. It would be neat if this was an intentional design choice.
10:55 Also: 08/08 is red’s birthday, and Gloria’s 03/03 is yellow’s birthday! Those two, by the way, are canonically endgame as confirmed in an interview back in… I wanna say 2005? A nice cute little reference ❤
If you think about it the protagonist of Legends Arceus probably has a distant descendant existing at the same time they do since they are thrown back in time.
As a diehard PoMaEX fan, appreciate you bringing up the tons of cool details Dena puts in each character, especially canonically establishing protagonists!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but, hasn't Pokemon Masters confirmed who the cannonical Hoenn portagonist is as well? If I'm not mistaken, in PokeMas, we see that Brendan is Norman's child, hence, the protagonist, while May is Prof. Birch's daughter.
Correct. Brendan calls Norman Dad, so it's confirmed that he's the protag while May is the rival (though yes, we all know that May is treated much better than Brendan lol!)
I think Hilda and Hilbert were also confirmed for who is the protag as Hilbert and N know each other from the bw story line and Hilda was given the battle subway partner title instead, especially since she's a massive battle fanatic in masters ex.
@@shadowlugia2624 I LOVE Pokemas Hilda xD She's got just one braincell and it's busy battling. I love that dialogue that goes with Hilda like "Who's that N guy?" And Hilbert "You don't know after everything that happened??????" and she's just like "Ye, man, you know I just want to battle :3"
Great video Surprised didn't mention any of the Brendan and Lucas movie cameos Especially the 1 vs 1 with Magmortar and Rhyperior which is the closest we got to a cross generational battle between two male protaganists in the anime The first female one being Dawn vs May The first ever cross generational battle between anime protaganist counterparts would have to be Ash vs May
I don’t know if there are other facts that exist about the protagonist characters beyond this video, but I rarely ever see this subject covered. I would love a part two of this that covers everything else you could possibly find.
What I find funny about Red and Charizard is that I'd HAVE to believe that this version of him is from Origins specifically. Otherwise....That'd most likely be Blue/Green's Charizard.
I believe that the Looker Bureau confirms Calem and Serena’s ages at at least 17, making them older than Hilbert and Hilda even in BW2, and even pretty close to N in BW1
It doesn't I believe you and everyone else is getting it mixed up with the first encounter you and Looker have with Emma who refers to Looker as an old man during the encounter and get it mixed up with her also calling the player character old. There is zero dialogue saying the player character is older than certain characters.
the fact there’s even an argument whether the gen 6 protags are the oldest boggles my mind because…one look at them and tell they’re older lmao. they’re much taller, more developed, and more evenly proportioned than the younger idols. they’re obviously the oldest.
I was shocked when I found out that Legends Lucas is called Ray bcs I always call my character "Ray" in every game so that technically makes my character Canon XD (Only in my eyes tho ^^")
The fact that the main character from emerald was once named Sean is crazy cause Emerald was my first Pokemon game and I played it named Sean since... that's my name obviously 😂
If there’s one thing about Brendan is that I wish he didn’t have his dumb hat and instead had white hair. I always believed that as a kid he had white hair and a headband (which was further cemented with the Pokémon X webcomic by Recon Dye who drew the Brendan sprite with white hair)

I still have a Lugia and Turtwig from the TFG era, and I think they were a sick inclusion, even if they didn't succeed. The mobile game was fun to play when it was around as well.
Here's every protagonist with a confirmed age(from Bulbapedia): Red/Leaf: 11 (From Manual) May/Brendan: 12 (In-game program) Hilda/Hilbert: 14 (Confirmed directly from creators) Elio/Selene: 11 (Easiest one lol) *This is one i heard once but idk where so not 100% sure, Serena/Calem: At least 16 (Emma a NPC post game is 16 and she says you're older)
I find it... strange... That *GREEN* has her starter pokemon be Squirtle, a *BLUE* tiny turtle pokemon, Red uses Bulbasaur, a green...frog thing, and Blue uses Charmander, the RED colored starter. WATAFAK!?!?!?!?!?
Interesting. Did not know that about Hilbert and Hilda. I always knew them as 14 year olds, except in B2W2 where they were 16. I wonder why they changed them from 16 to 14 though, did they already plan to do a sequel set 2 years later and they didn't want them to canonically be the first protags to be adults going from 16 to 18??
fun fact two of the female protagonist are heavily implied to be related to each other in the manga Moon's origan was changed from her game counterpart in the games she's from kanto however in the manga she's from sinnoh and is said to hail from a high prestigious family her sister is also from the same family in the pokemon manga platinum dawn's counterpart is also in the same family
Pretty interesting! The portagonist's have more to them than I thought! I knew most of the facts, but some really catched my eye like with the BW2 female protagonist being a former team plasma grunt. Wow!
If you *really* want to be annoying (and I do) then May is the first trainer confirmed to not be a Protagonist in Masters. Brendan's dad is Norman in Masters, and May currently doesn't have her dad there (which would be Birch).
I want to imagine that the voice actors of Akari and Rei are just janitors or office workers that they pulled into the recording studio and were told to just make up some exhausted sounds.

im not gonna lie, the fact they adressed the Sun and Moon protagonists' blank expressions is one of the funniest things to me
In Pokémon Masters EX, there's also a scene where Selene tries some I think Curry, and describes it, pointing out what was missing.

Yup. Plus, they mistake the Sinnoh protagonists for the Hisui protagonists, and the former ones have no idea who they're referring to.
This is going to be running gag throughout Pokemon Masters EX now. All Hisui characters are going to mistake some characters with others
Masters takes significant liberties with game canon to sidestep weird implications, it’s entirely possible they’re going with the idea that Akari and Rei are both the completely normal ancestors of Dawn and Lucas with no time travel involved.
I mean, it’s time travel, for all we know they could have been thrown back in time after Pokémon masters take place.

Grass-types deal normal damage to a Water/Steel-type like Empoleon, due to Steel resisting Grass while Water being weak to Grass.
also i love how selene is literally T-posing in this Video
Wow, i could totally see that, out of all the pair of protagonists, Elio and Selene are the ones who are more likely to be siblings, even twins, imo. They have the most similar hair, and personality.
@Failed_Vestige_of_Exandria Torterra does still get ground vs Empoleon though.

This makes it even *worse* that you’re forced to go on a date with canonically 8 shauna.

Ethan - rivals with Silver
Lyra - fought Red once
Kris - encountered Suicune
Brendan - his father is Norman
Dawn - Lucas is Rowan's assistant
Hilbert - met N and was the one defeated Ghetsis
Rosa - friends with Hugh
Serena - Calem states that she was very silent when they first met, a trait to all silent protags
Elio - Island Challenge and knows Masked Royal's identity
Gloria - beats Eternatus with Hop and the legendary dogs
And I'll list other protags that aren't actually canon protag in Masters.
May - Birch is her father
Lucas - lab assistant
Hilda - Battle Subway trainer and have never met N
Nate - Battle Subway trainer
Calem - Grand Duke
Selene - did not know the identity of the Masked Royal
Victor - Gloria is the main protag who saved the region
selene and elio are twins. They are both protags in masters cannon, in the manga they are a couple who are both protags.

Could have sworn Norman was May’s father and Birch was Brendan’s
This also implies that canonically, the protagonists of the games are:
Red, Lyra, Brendan, Dawn, Hilbert, Serena, Elio & Gloria.
the Johto protags are a little weird as:
Ethan & Silver are frenemies - implies that Ethan never got to the Indigo Plateau for some reason, but knows Lance.

I like Pokémon masters, but they make almost every female protag’s personality ‘bubbly and upbeat’. It’d be nice to see more variety.
I like the idea that Red can only speak in Spanish but can still understand English, like Lopez from red vs blue.
For legends arceus we can actually tell what region our character is from by the pjs they wear in the opening. And interestingly enough they’re from different region

Who is partnered with Palkia, just like the Cyrus from the RR Episode in USUM, and during the event where you get him as a sync pair, Cheryl says that Cynthia told her that Cyrus' plans were foiled in the Distortion World, but the Cyrus in Masters doesn't recall that happening. also in Pokemon Masters you can see how Brendan and May feel something for each other, plus the RSE/ORAS games are the first to introduce two protagonists who interact with each other, so it makes sense that in the manga they are a canon couple
@@mellxw_ pretty sure end of oras also implies a potential romance with may blushing
@@TheHeavieKiwie they are many references to ash in the games but they are never straight to the point.
@@TheHeavieKiwieun and moon demo i think you could get ash greninja. The letter says -heavily implies- the greninja belongs to ash.

It's kind of funny to me in a messed up kind of way that Dawn, the canonically confirmed, most itsy bitsy, literally 10 y/o little girl is the one that got drama with arguably the most deities (including but not limited to God itself and its immediate children)
Like damn Satan there's a baby lost in your private circle of hell

@@zikadraws79 Pokemon: Platinum, the best of the Sinnoh games
Funnier yet is how they aged Serena down for the manga but couldn't really change her design. So you have this 12 year old girl who's 162 cm tall and is at least a B cup
One thing that should be noted about voice acting in Japan, when a VA retires or passes away, as a show of respect, their characters are also usually retired. They may show up a bit here or there, but will almost never have any lines of dialogue
"Until Akari and Rei came along, Hilda and Hilbert were the oldest confirmed Pokémon protagonists at 14 years old"
ACTUALLY
In X and Y, Shauna states that she is 16 years old, and she also states she is YOUNGER than the player character, which makes Calem and Serena _at least_ 17. Just a fun piece of Pokémon lore :3
? At least 17? If we're digging that deep who's to say the age difference isn't by a few months, or days?
Also I don't recall Xavier being 17
It is very likely fake unless there is a source. Their ages have never been released. In the anime Serena is ten, and in Pokespe XY they are twelve. If they had explicitly set their age, Pokespe would follow it.
Not to mention that if we're including Rei and Akari, they were confirmed to be 15 in game.
So I’m not the only one who doesn’t know if Eilo or Serene is the protag?
The way they’ve handled Elio and Selene, I’m not gonna be surprised if they literally were both the protagonists, because it seems both of them moved it to Alola and both reference the story events, tho Selene is more focused on the Island Trials, while Elio talks more about Lillie.
@@theownerofthisaccount2521 Lillie is the protag of Alola, Elio/Selene are just tagalongs.
10:09 is weirdly menacing as a child t-poses and staring into your soul.
The sun and moon protagonists canonically struggle with dissociation or as they call it “ultra spacing out”
Seeing the thumbnail, It made me remind of the Shipping I did between Red and Rosa back in the day, It's just the calm nature of Red and the Active and crazy nature of Rosa would work well lol
"Dawn is the youngest protagonist canonically."
Oof, makes what the internet has done even worse.
Which is kinda weird because ash existing in the games universe has been a thing since gen 7
Where in the demo, ash quite litterally mails elio
And in the mart, there's a picture of ash
So honestly,I've never considered ash to be red's counterpart
Gary is indeed Blue's anime counterpart and Ash more or less represents all the male player characters as his outfit changes to match theirs
Leaf and Green are on practice the same character and are interchangeable in external media
Lyra and Kris are different characters as they are the female protagonists of different games.
Heeeeyyyyy! I do the same thing with the manga characters after DPPt parts.
I too spend long, long, loooooooooong hours on Bulbapedia
I'd say something like citrinea, after the crystal citrine.
Scarlet and Violet had full character customization...except for clothing. You know the part that everyone cares about the most and which almost every other Pokemon game that has had character customization has featured.
IKR
Depending on whether you read Pokemon Adventures/Special in Japanese or English, Blue as we know him is green, and Green/leaf is Blue in Japanese (their eye color reflects this). Anyway, if anyone hasn't read Pokemon Adventure it's a darn good manga :D
I will try to read it, but how long is it, and where can I find it
The Rei/Akari thing is pretty weird, since theoratically they aren't protagonists. The character you select is a 15 year old Dawn/Lucas and based on that descision either Rei or Akari exist in the world as a counterpart and possibly your ancestor. Reasoning for you playing Dawn/Lucas are:
1.) Arceus send you from another time into Hisui
2.) In that time you had a phone (so modern era)
3.) You are a prodigy in batteling and catching pokemon almost as if you are a regions champion
4.) Leftover code/graphics reveal a 3d-version of Dawn/Lucas room
5.) Your character like ingo suffers from light amnesia and doesn't remember anything especially regarding time travel
one of the best facts of pokemon games is how the Johto protag, Ethan's, literally the only backwards hat protag in the entire game series-
we need deff more backwards hat protags-
One thing to note about Pokemon Masters, its using multiverse (Hoopa to be exact) as its justification for all the characters showing up, so it really can't be taken as exactly canon, as these are just versions of characters, in some cases their adventures happen in ways not possible in mainline games (hell, even in this video you pointed out how Lucas and Dawn's starters don't match up with Dawn being the protagonist).
"Full customization for the Scarlet and Violet protagonists"
I'm inclined to agree until you get to their clothes. Then you have the choice of short sleeves and shorts or long sleeves and pants.
I call all protagonists by their manga names, the best Pokémon continuity
Did you know, in Pokémon Crystal the protagonists' sprites can be color swapped on the map with a glitch? (Until the event with the Pokéball maker).
something i would like to say is that in pokemon adventures, ruby was shown to have come from goldenrod instead of olivine, which I think is pretty interesting
I think both are accurate, Norman was likely the Olivine gym leader before Jasmine took over when he got demoted by the Pokémon League. But his family likely lived in Goldenrod because the school was there.
The idea of Rosa being a former Team Plasma grunt actually sounds awesome! Though I didn’t think they’d let kids be part of their team.
One thing I noticed recently is that the shirt worn by Rosa from B2/W2 shares the same color scheme as the uniform of Team Plasma during the events of B/W. It would be neat if this was an intentional design choice.
12:17 i cry every time i see that hand
10:55 Also: 08/08 is red’s birthday, and Gloria’s 03/03 is yellow’s birthday! Those two, by the way, are canonically endgame as confirmed in an interview back in… I wanna say 2005? A nice cute little reference ❤

Surprised didn't mention any of the Brendan and Lucas movie cameos
Especially the 1 vs 1 with Magmortar and Rhyperior which is the closest we got to a cross generational battle between two male protaganists in the anime
The first female one being Dawn vs May
The first ever cross generational battle between anime protaganist counterparts would have to be Ash vs May
I don’t know if there are other facts that exist about the protagonist characters beyond this video, but I rarely ever see this subject covered.
@@Vandalieu It does. And I literally gave you the piece of dialogue proving such in another comment chain.
the fact there’s even an argument whether the gen 6 protags are the oldest boggles my mind because…one look at them and tell they’re older lmao. they’re much taller, more developed, and more evenly proportioned than the younger idols. they’re obviously the oldest.
I love what they did with Elio and Elesa's staring
I was shocked when I found out that Legends Lucas is called Ray bcs I always call my character "Ray" in every game so that technically makes my character Canon XD

The fact that the main character from emerald was once named Sean is crazy cause Emerald was my first Pokemon game and I played it named Sean since... that's my name obviously 😂
I always imagine Red/The protagonist talking to themselves when reading in game text not from npcs
If there’s one thing about Brendan is that I wish he didn’t have his dumb hat and instead had white hair. I always believed that as a kid he had white hair and a headband (which was further cemented with the Pokémon X webcomic by Recon Dye who drew the Brendan sprite with white hair)
I agree the white hair just made him look cool but now it's confirmed to be a weird hat
Pokemon adventures also reveals Brendan has a massive scar on his head from a Charizard encounter that's why he wears that hat
I thought it was a Salamence?

I still have a Lugia and Turtwig from the TFG era, and I think they were a sick inclusion, even if they didn't succeed. The mobile game was fun to play when it was around as well.
Fun fact for the Ruby sapphire protagonist in the adventure manga the two are shiped
