    This makes me much more happy about skimping out on the more expensive PM2s for my hard use case of slicing cheese, bananas, salami, apples, and the occasional amazon package.

    S30V is definitely my favorite steel. Perfectly balanced in all segments , I have it for a mini Grptilian and it's great

      I too have a mini grip in s30v. I agree it covers all of the bases well. No chipping and easy to sharpen

      There is a link in each video description to a Google spreadsheet of all the edge retention testing results. Some of the other things I've found aren't anything that can be put in a context like that. I will be doing some videos talking about such things with certain steels.

    I spent last weekend in the forest carving wood for practising my traps. I used my Shaman in s30v. Cut A LOT of hard dead wood. Knife was still hairpopping sharp Sunday night when I got back home. I was stunned!

    • @Outpost_76
      @Outpost_76  3 роки тому +1

      Wood related tasks act much differently on steels. Even some if the most basic stuff can last in the woods longer than you would expect .

    Knowing what we now know, I would love to buy Knives with no edge. Just put the primary grind on it. It would allow you to put what you want with no overheating. Thank you for another great test.

    • @danswaney3488
      @danswaney3488 3 роки тому +1

      My thoughts exactly... The overheated factory edge sucks... Starting out with a precise secondary bevel would be a bonus... 15 /15 vs 20 / 16 from Spyderco.

    Does the coating on the blade mess with the hardness test? Just wondering if it might throw off the hrc test. I like s30v personal. It makes a great edc steel imo.

      @@SRVandDtrouble the liners will show and when I did mine I powder coated the liners black. That being said I took the blade out marked the liners where I wanted them then took down the handle as a whole. If you have a belt sander and time you can do one as well. I can cover how I did it in a video and I'd be happy to do yours if you cover shipping both ways.

      While I have found some S30V from Spyderco to be around 59 hrc, I've tested way more the past year that have been 60 to 61 hrc. Even the softer S30V from them still performs just fine and I still use them to this day. I will have a direct test and use comparison on 59 hrc and this particular knife that's just over 61 hrc. That way the difference can be seen on more than one way.

      You have to attend the sale in November before Thanksgiving in person or find someone selling ones they bought there. If you watch the forums, groups and ebay in late November and early December you'll find them.

      S30V should have slightly better edge holding than S35VN which trades edge retention for toughness, about 1% less vanadium in S35VN

    Probably 61-62hrc or just not burnt like you said. Can't wait to see that s45vn. Personally I prefer 300+ and I'm guessing that won't be likely.

    From what I have seen with s45 it reminds me of xhp. Would be nice to see others come to similar conclusions. I think s30v on the pm2 especially shines in that 400/600 grit range. And s45 is more ideal for the finer grit ceramic sharpening Stones spyderco sells and most ppl use. .
