When I was playing the first God of War i was still in college. It was perfect for me at the time. I now have a family and kids, so yes, this is the perfect evolution.
Some folk in the games media are getting worried since the preorder numbers are low, but I personally think that's all due to no release date being announced, on every forum or comments section I see tons of people who are sold on this game
This channel is so underrated. i don't know many people don't talk about it much also the comment section isn't a toxic waste dump like Digital Foundry,IGN or Gamespot is.
Having played all God of War games this title has me so excited. Cory is brilliant, he did GOW2 and wrote the story for the PSP game “Ghost of Sparta” which are the best games in the series in my opinion. This video was great 👍🏽
He did? Goddamn. I love Cory Barlog now. GoW2 was my fave because it was actually the first that I played and I really liked the story, but I played Ghost of Sparta a bit and I actually went by Deimos when I was still an edgy teen so I'm really happy that he came up with the story. This game is in good hands.
Same here. Absolutely love the God of War series. The only game I have not played is God of War: Betrayal. God of War 2, God of War: Ghost of Sparta and God of War were my personal favourites. Just fell in love with the story, combat and puzzles in the game.
At first I didn't want anything to do with this new imagining of God of war, but the god of war fan in me must have it, just to see kratos be a bad ass as an old man.
I definitely agree here , Gow 2 and ghost of sparta ( alongs with the third ) were the greatests .. Cory seems to be so passionate about creating this new Gow .. soo i much details into it . I love and find very interesting Kratos relationship with his son .. it weirds but it kind of remind me about Heavy Rain and The Last of us with 70% of Gow .. game of the year in my opinion ! Really glad they changed the camera angle and gameplay although i always loved gow series for its world and main character development . This episode looks much more mature and this is fantastic as Kratos has been in a revenge mode enough for the Last 15 years .. time for new adventures
Cory Barlog always seemed like a hilarious guy to be around. I remember on the very first God of War during the making of featurette, he was always the funniest and most interesting one whenever he camera was on him....now he’s the director of the franchise. Awesome
It’s refreshing knowing that some studios still really care about quality gameplay and compelling stories/characterization over live service monetization.
The first game in the series where I absolutely will play this day 1. Not really into the earlier games, but this new take really shakes things up. I'm so stoked!
>first game >game I don't know about all that. >will get day 1 Second time I won't (GoW:A). First time I won't even get it used. YT has me covered. >really shakes things up It certainly shakes the baby, yes. >Swede >Dad Step-Dad of War:Cuckratos Edition must have been made for you.
>couldn't get into it You've come to the right place, then, friend. Ready to get good with GoW proper? Shall we start with GoW1? What's the precise run history, anyway? You at least cleared Normal, I imagine. >can't wait to play Watch, rather. Though I suppose you can "play" a movie (in a sense).
XxBUMGODxX I love my ps4 ,and switch. But also hope Microsoft learns from there mistakes and start making a lot of single player exclusives to give the other companies a run for there money.
First things first, Microsoft needs to stray away from their Trinity *(Halo, Gears, Forza)* and capitalize on the investments that they keep saying that they have. They almost did that with Insomniac Games and Sunset Overdrive, but they managed to drop the ball on that as well. It’s not too late for them, but it really is getting to that, now or never period for them.
6:46 Cory's talk about why he feels fatigue and how he views open world games of recent years, and why he decided not to - is very interesting and quite similar to mine. I am glad they didn't go with the OW approach here. I don't mind big areas and levels and maps but not every game should be an open world - and I feel like the more focused and linear - the better the games. Getting distracted, overwhelmed, frustrated with many options and confused - those are the things that makes people like me tired of OW gameplay and lost. You lose motivation and get detached as you veer of course and forget what the main story and struggle is all about. The pacing also lacks quite a lot eventually.
100% agree. Take new Assassins Creed. They just created boring sidequests and put them in this big big map. Sure, some people might enjoy just running around the world killing random crocodiles for XP, but I much prefer tight story with plots, revelations etc. On the other hand, The Withcer 3 was perfect. Side Quests were done just right, the pacing was balanced.
@@VideoByEdDy I disagree. In the new Assassin's Creeds, for the first time since AC3, they actually made interesting side quests that told you about the world, characters, and culture of that world. These quests had stories like Bayek helping out his friend by chilling with his kids, or particpating a festival to Sekhemet and finding out how people are taking advantage of this. Waypoint says this "the mode of engagement with that world is radically new for the franchise. Despite having a fairly limited set of gameplay mechanics, Origins requires the player to interact with its world in unique, even touching, ways-and the already striking world of classical Egypt is more beautiful for it. There is a mission in the first third of the game where some people are standing on the side of a dusty road by a cart. A woman is weeping, and a man hails Bayek. Bandits recently entered the area, and they disturbed a group of hippos. These hippos rampaged through the fields of the local village, and they ended up killing several farmers and villagers who were attempting to flee. In many games, this would be a mission to kill the hippos and exact vengeance. In Origins, we are tasked with finding the bodies of the dead, lifting them over our shoulders, and returning them to the cart so that they can be identified. Ultimately, this launches a significant side quest to rescue someone and defend the village, but this introductory quest has stuck with me. I’ve never been given such a mundane and yet communally important quest in a video game. There is another mission, near the end of the game this time, that is about raising political awareness. The average Egyptian in Bayek’s time in multiply oppressed beneath class, religious difference, race, ethnicity, and a complex interrelation between Greek and Roman economics and social dynamics that aren’t accurately accounted for in the qualities at the beginning of this sentence. We see this play out dozens of times in as many ways over the course of the game, but in this one particular mission it is up to Bayek to go recruit some farmers to help put political pressure on the ruling order. When he arrives to spread the good news, the farmer in question isn’t having any of it. He needs to burn his crops to fertilize his field; no matter what is happening now, he’s in trouble if he can’t grow anything and feed himself a year from now. So Bayek has to take out his torch and put it to the large flammable piles of detritus. Only then, when the work of daily life is done, is it possible to rise up. Bayek’s infinite free time as a Medjay, a protector, means that he can pitch in and do his share to help everyone in the long run. There are more moments like those, but it would be stealing something special to go through them all. I constantly mourn the fact that contemporary blockbuster games have very few ways for players to interact with the world around them. For the most part, we can choose to kill things or not kill them (or, maybe, throw things at people or not throw those things). It’s in this context that Assassin’s Creed Origins asks me to help care for the dead, to aid a farmer. The world of this game radically expands and becomes more engaging when the actions that a player can perform move beyond stalking and killing over and over again. And, to be clear, that is still the majority of the game, and a retooled combat system with counters, light attacks, heavy attacks, and all of the other things you might want from an action game, is here. You can fight in gladiatorial arenas. You can kill to your heart’s content. But the dominance of one kind of action is being nudged out of the way, a little, and with a great amount of care."
It would have been so easy for them to use this setting but use a brand new protagonist. The fact that they’re bringing Kratos back, and referencing his past and the things he did is amazing, it’s a deep dive in story I didn’t think God of War was capable of
I believe it would have been HARDER to have a new character. Reasons is GOW is a brand. Selling a new IP is a hard thing to do to the higher ups. its always more risk. Hench why we see soo many sequels. The team did the right thing tho. Making a new game with a series and moving it forward rather than recycling it with little to no new effort. Which is something many Studios dont get to do because "profit" is more important.
It seems that every game is an open world, rarely any of them provide a new experience or tightly written story. Most of them are also filled with meaningless side quest with vast empty map that serve no purpose.
Saif AlBarwani I've played some open world games myself and sadly this is the case in some games what would be an open world experience from your perspective
After playing this game numerous times and completing it's hardest difficulty I can say that it is one of my favourite games ever. The story, the combat, the visuals all make this game a real masterpiece. Nothing felt over used or exhausting and no boring mechanics. Leaving the double jump in the past and going for a close combat camera was a brilliant decision and I think probably the most important gameplay aspect. Il be playing this again for sure. After pissing off a few Norse God's that we hadn't met yet in this game, I'm sure we will see this setting again.
It is a craft,,one of the signs that the game industry is maturing is the fact that its becoming an art. No dout its not jus silly fun anymore, games are becoming deep meaningful and artistic narratives, without forgoing the gameplay of course, and that makes me very happy and proud to be a part of the gaming community. Cory deserves many praises for what he did with god of war. I never played a gow game before, but now i am a fan!
I can understand why people dislike the camera change. Nostalgia is a powerful emotion. Still, my favorite moments from the old GoW games were the close up cinematic shots/gameplay & the QTE's. (GoW always did QTE's right.) Now we get this new close camera angle & now I feel like I can feel every punch, every action. Just my two cents. Thank yall for the hard work making this game. I can not wait. EDIT: Push the game back to August if you need to!
I know the experience I'll take away the most is seeing Kratos back on my screen, to me there's never been a bad God of War game I love them all and I know 100% I'll love this one!!
Tajirinere Agboghoroma I completely agree with you. When he said that, it dawned on me that is exactly how I feel about open world games now. It becomes a chore as the "to do" list gets bigger and bigger and bigger.
Filip S "Putting effort into stuff"??? I play games for fun, not for effort. Besides, Witcher 3 is widely regarded as the pinnacle of open world gaming and should not be used as an indication of the level of quality for the rest of open world games out there. Most open world games think that throwing busywork at you around every corner is depth but its not. Well done on assuming the worst of someone you've never met. It says more about you than your amatuerish attempt at internet psychology says about me.
Much like the 10 year wait for FFXV, certain side quests within the game made me feel as if it would require a full decade just to complete the side quest and get back to the main storyline.
Are you not buying the game if it comes out in May instead of March? I’m just hoping it comes out by May since there’s no date yet. It can’t come out in June because that’s the e3 month and everything after that would push all their games back.
I've been a GoW fan since the franchise started and can relate to how they are trying to evolve the game. I'm 37 now and have 2 kids (9yr & 6yr) and look forward to seeing if old man Kratos and I have evolved down a similar path :-)
“Open world games felt like homework” I honestly couldn’t have said it, or rather, thought it better myself. Nowadays, there is a surplus of empty open world games with tedious side quests. Playing these games truly feels like a chore so games like God of War really felt like a breath of fresh air to the industry.
I love what you guys at Santa Monica Studio do, stay the way you all are. Keep making decisions they way you do. And thank you Sony for trusting and supporting Development Studios like this one all over the world. I have the feeling that we got a GOTY featuring Kratos comming our way in just a few days, even with knowing that this could be a different type of game, probably meaning less of a hack and slash and instead a more physical, meaty, consequential kind of action combat where you need to analyze enemy movement, physique, your positioning and each weapon type present in battle.
The way he explained the "open world craze", that's going on right now is exactly on point to my thoughts. I'm so tired of endless, pointless, side quests and trillions of collectables! I love the world design of God of War. It is linear story driven game but in open playing areas and secrets waiting to be discovered. The pacing for this game is absolutely perfect and if it was open world, it would ruin the pacing and make the game into an endless collectathion with stupid fetch quest's. Thank you Cory and the development team for this masterpiece! My favorite game of the year hands down and one of my favorite games that I've EVER played! Going back to beat it for a third time and possibly the most valuable game that I've ever spent $60 on. Thank you Sony as well for taking this risk and giving us this game. Please bring more of these types of games to the market. We are starving for them!
Cory is the best director any developer company could ever have, this guy actually CARES about video games,AND it is the most effective director, everything he does its top tier! i mean, what else can you ask for?
Damn I remember when i playedthe first GOW and i was stunned and that was when i was in high school. Now i have a family and I cannot believe the huge turn around this game made not to mention that I have stick to the Play Station thanks to this game!
Why Game Informer are so good at making interviews? this one reminded me of the interview with voice cast of Metal Gear Solid, I learned from it about MGS more than I ever did either from the game itself or articles, and really felt the atmosphere they had back then and get to know each one contributed in the franchise, the trick I guess lies in the simplicity of the interview per se, IGN for instance, so fancy and inflated yet never satisfying. Big thumb up.
Can’t wait. Just reserved the Stone Mason Edition today. Not because I love collectibles. Not because I love exclusives. It’s because I support the developers that give so much to deliver the quality I’ve come to expect. Here’s to you Sony Santa Monica!
I know I'm late to this but the trend in gaming is not slower, mature, linear stories. It's open world, "games as services", microtransaction traps. Cory is spot on in his analysis of what devs think gamers want and what we actually crave.
Artists need freedom to create, then they can come up with something truly amazing. Incredibly talented people at Sony Santa Monica and across the board at Sony
I can not wait for this! Seeing the changes shocked me at first, as a fan since the first on PS2, I can see this is going to be good for the series though
Franchise I can't wait you guys are amazing greatest game past present and in immediate future I I have one kid a boy and he is 8 I love this game from the bottem to the top of me heart.
The most anticipated game ever i have been waiting for this frm the day i completed all the god of war titles and was like wht and when will this game release i love this game from my heart its like a major inspiration to me as a gamer in my opinion best game series ever is god of war and believe that👊🏻🎮
Yes it did. One of my favorite games of all time. Video games evolve, so this style of games will probably not be as popular as it is now forever but that's what's so great about video games. They are always evolving!
I agree with what he said about open world games I'm still playing the witcher 3 and I got that game at launch. Also the witcher 3 is right now my favorite game of all time right now and I think this game might change that
Imagine a continuation on the norse world and at some point Kratos gets the opportunity to pick up Thor's hammer and there's this huge build up and Kratos is able to pick it up. I would lose my fucking mind if that happened
i just noticed at 2:30, the kid takes the arrow with his right hand (meaning it should be on the right side side im assuming) but when he pulls back its on the left side of the bow
His comments on open world fatigue are spot on. I love open world games (HZD, Origins, Witcher, Fallout, Skyrim) but the fatigue is real. Definitely appreciate that it's semi-open world.
He was spot on about open world fatigue, im a huge fan of linear narrative driven games, this is why im a fan of sony.
When I was playing the first God of War i was still in college. It was perfect for me at the time. I now have a family and kids, so yes, this is the perfect evolution.
stuntguy2012 huh?
stuntguy2012 wow you pathetic asswipe. Why didn't you properly spell out your racist comment? Too stupid?!
Basic as hell. Fuck kids and family but I still enjoy a great story lmao. No offense. I have a dog tho
SuperBabyMario0C this comment sent me through a rollar coaster of emotion
It's just ppl be like "now I have a family and kids" nah you always had family now you just have kids haha. Good luck. Not for me tho
This game will knock it out of the park, Santa Monica ain't fucking around !
Game Factory you mean naughty dog
I come from the future, you are correct.
This game is a day one buy for me!!
same here buddy :D
yep!
well tbh , it a pre-order really XD
Some folk in the games media are getting worried since the preorder numbers are low, but I personally think that's all due to no release date being announced, on every forum or comments section I see tons of people who are sold on this game
JD Marshall Indeed. Once the release date is announced the pre-orders will skyrocket.
Will buy It on day 1. Physical copy surely
This conversation got a lot deeper then I though it would.
I like that it did.
Mayan Era?
This would be the coolest thing ever.
No other developer has truly explored this topic. I would love to see something like that.
This channel is so underrated. i don't know many people don't talk about it much also the comment section isn't a toxic waste dump like Digital Foundry,IGN or Gamespot is.
Aloy Chloe Price Thanks, bud!
Aloy Chloe Price very true, its all about the game rather than a pissing contest over whos opinion is superior.

Love this new direction of gow.
PHILL SHIVELY too bad bro
PHILL SHIVELY to each there own.
I really hope this game delivers.
what's wrong about god of war 3 ?
Honestly It suck! its like they're reimagining it into the last of us.
They knocked it out of the park off the planet and yet they are inhumanely humble about it. Someone give this man and his team a medal.
Also cake.
Can't wait for this masterpiece
Cory’s glasses are great imo.
any chance you know what model are those?
It's Saul/Smoke by Ace & Tate :)
on point ty
It’s refreshing knowing that some studios still really care about quality gameplay and compelling stories/characterization over live service monetization.
The first game in the series where I absolutely will play this day 1. Not really into the earlier games, but this new take really shakes things up. I'm so stoked!
you have to play all of the games so you will get into the story its really entertaining and your going to get familiar with the story as well
>first game
>game
I don't know about all that.
>will get day 1
Second time I won't (GoW:A). First time I won't even get it used. YT has me covered.
>really shakes things up
It certainly shakes the baby, yes.
>Swede
>Dad
Step-Dad of War:Cuckratos Edition must have been made for you.
BigVEE I guess. Just for me.
Totally agree with you. I played a few of the old ones but never could really get into it. this new direction is more my speed.
cant wait to play it.
>couldn't get into it
You've come to the right place, then, friend. Ready to get good with GoW proper? Shall we start with GoW1? What's the precise run history, anyway? You at least cleared Normal, I imagine.

Watch, rather. Though I suppose you can "play" a movie (in a sense).
Come on Cory my employer needs ample notice of time off I'm going to be taken for this game
The scene in the E3 demo when he teaches his son to hunt is very powerful.
I can’t wait. In the meantime Il play shadow of the colossus remake.
me neither
-Albert
When is the release for that.
Kadeem John February 6th
Same here.
Alright you earned a sub, if you cover Spider-Man the same way that would be great.
The Amazing Lucas Ditto buddy! 😁
WOW! You earned the respect and even recruited the elusive and holy "The Amazing Lucas". What a feat! Pat yourself on the back, Game Informer.
Guess you're happy now :) !
You must be satisfied there Lucas.
The Amazing Lucas
Lmao seriously with Spider-Man ???? It’s not that great. But it is cool.
Feels great to be excited for this. Microsoft better get the ball rolling. Competition is good for us

Ransom Seraph such as bloodborne. Had a linear quest line with just the right amount of freedom.
Yep I tend to get detached and start playing something else, never finishing the OW game.

Here’s to a March release date 🍺🍺 dilly dilly!!!!
I got a gamestop+ just to get game informer and once i got this month.... I JUST HAD to look on youtube to see if there a video. THANK YOU!!!!
‘Open world games feel like homework.’ Couldn’t have said it better myself!!

I completely agree with you. When he said that, it dawned on me that is exactly how I feel about open world games now. It becomes a chore as the "to do" list gets bigger and bigger and bigger.
Filip S
"Putting effort into stuff"???
I play games for fun, not for effort. Besides, Witcher 3 is widely regarded as the pinnacle of open world gaming and should not be used as an indication of the level of quality for the rest of open world games out there.
Most open world games think that throwing busywork at you around every corner is depth but its not.
Well done on assuming the worst of someone you've never met. It says more about you than your amatuerish attempt at internet psychology says about me.
Witcher is not a chore I was sad because I finished the game I wanted more..and then came the dlc's and trully the shit hit the fun...
dimitris bam
Who said the Witcher was a chore??
Much like the 10 year wait for FFXV, certain side quests within the game made me feel as if it would require a full decade just to complete the side quest and get back to the main storyline.
I'm getting worried that there is no release date yet. I hope they live up to the promise of early 2018 release
Shaunak Deshpande god of war 3 was announced in January for a march release looks like this move would be the same
Are you not buying the game if it comes out in May instead of March? I’m just hoping it comes out by May since there’s no date yet. It can’t come out in June because that’s the e3 month and everything after that would push all their games back.
Sony Santa Monica just a few days ago said on Twitter that the game Is still coming out in early 2018, so no need to worry :)
Alex Townley but what does early 2018 really mean? May... April.... or March??
Shogun_Blade Z well it generally means Quarter 1 which is January through March.
Buying this game Day 1, everything about it looks so good
a starving african child Don’t say that!! Lol this looks too good to be bad
Wow Santa Monica devs talking about Zelda !
I cannot wait for this game! Once I heard Cory Barlog was back onboard for it, I had no doubts that this game will be amazing.
Man! the interview got DEEP towards the end
1:35 "Ops, Wrong way"
Soulnysta sego I thought the same thing 😂
Do u kno da wae
I really can’t wait until this game comes out this will be incredible. I want to fucking use the leviathan already.
Loving the concept the changes and the Norse Egypt would rock too I’m so ready
I've been a GoW fan since the franchise started and can relate to how they are trying to evolve the game. I'm 37 now and have 2 kids (9yr & 6yr) and look forward to seeing if old man Kratos and I have evolved down a similar path :-)
I always wanted a god of war game when kratos is a spartan general
I fucking love god of war !
This is the way to go for this franchise. I can't wait to play this game. I'm so damn pumped up.
Shannon is such a badass women, she has been on the game for so long, on a inside world where man have waaay more room, ruge respect
I love hearing smart passionate people talk. Why can't i allow myself to be like them?
can not wait for this game looks so good! I have been a God Of War fan since the beginning. seems like a really cool place to work as well
The call backs to previous god of war titles is what made the game for me.
This guy needs to be behind more games. Cause he gets why we play games. If more developers had people like him we would be better off.
Cory hit the nail on the head with his description of open world games for me lol
Corey made a good point about open world games
Why Game Informer are so good at making interviews? this one reminded me of the interview with voice cast of Metal Gear Solid, I learned from it about MGS more than I ever did either from the game itself or articles, and really felt the atmosphere they had back then and get to know each one contributed in the franchise, the trick I guess lies in the simplicity of the interview per se, IGN for instance, so fancy and inflated yet never satisfying.
Big thumb up.
Muhannad Ali We love you, tell a friend!
I can't wait for this to come out.
Can’t wait. Just reserved the Stone Mason Edition today. Not because I love collectibles. Not because I love exclusives. It’s because I support the developers that give so much to deliver the quality I’ve come to expect. Here’s to you Sony Santa Monica!
So when are we gonna beat the shit out of Wukong?
Cory managed to make a game look better then the trailer
I can't wait, I am a huge god if war fan. The day this game comes out I am going to buy it.
jesus christ, both of them are really smart about how they talk
I actually believe that this game is going to be great and I sincerely hope that it doesn't disappoint
I know I'm late to this but the trend in gaming is not slower, mature, linear stories. It's open world, "games as services", microtransaction traps. Cory is spot on in his analysis of what devs think gamers want and what we actually crave.
So tell me how in 8:42 of this video she says that Cory already is talking about more stories for future GoW games?! Holy sh*t can't wait!!!
Artists need freedom to create, then they can come up with something truly amazing. Incredibly talented people at Sony Santa Monica and across the board at Sony
He will found the fountain of the youth and keep living different ages... yessss
6:46 true dat.
I can not wait for this! Seeing the changes shocked me at first, as a fan since the first on PS2, I can see this is going to be good for the series though
the more cory talks the more i love him.
Any video that gets these 2 or anyone else from Santa Monica to talk about GoD I'm gonna watch the crap out of it!!
I'm so damn hyped for this game
Franchise I can't wait you guys are amazing greatest game past present and in immediate future I I have one kid a boy and he is 8 I love this game from the bottem to the top of me heart.
The most anticipated game ever i have been waiting for this frm the day i completed all the god of war titles and was like wht and when will this game release i love this game from my heart its like a major inspiration to me as a gamer in my opinion best game series ever is god of war and believe that👊🏻🎮
Really good interview very insightful!!
Corey’s gotta be one of the weirdest dudes in the gaming industry. But I kinda like it. Can’t wait for this game!
You should see his rapid fire interview if you haven’t. The dude is crazy, but funny
Haven't you seen that dude from the Game Awards? The one that screamed "FUCK THE OSCARS". I think he's weirder 🌚
Name one genius that aint crazy -Kanye West lol
Weird is good. Especially, for the sake of creativity. In that regard, it’s basically detrimental.
7:09 I couldn't fucking agree more as much as I adored The Witcher 3 in 2015 I just can't go back
Great interview!
I think that seeing God of War going Egyptian would be incredibly badass. I'd love to see that mythos.
The Last of Us really changed the gaming industry
And for the better
Yes it did. One of my favorite games of all time. Video games evolve, so this style of games will probably not be as popular as it is now forever but that's what's so great about video games. They are always evolving!
HOLY FUCK EGYPTIAN GOD OF WAR!! 😱❤️
I agree with what he said about open world games I'm still playing the witcher 3 and I got that game at launch. Also the witcher 3 is right now my favorite game of all time right now and I think this game might change that
Amazing game from a amazing studio can't wait will pre-order the collector's edition soon as it has a release date.
We love god of war!!... I LOVE GOD OF WAR!!!!!! keep up the good work guys
God of war in Egypt? Take my money.
Imagine a continuation on the norse world and at some point Kratos gets the opportunity to pick up Thor's hammer and there's this huge build up and Kratos is able to pick it up. I would lose my fucking mind if that happened
Reminds me of a mix between TLOU and Rise of the Tomb Raider.
i like this format
#dayonewethere
Cory is such an OG, love that guy
i just noticed at 2:30, the kid takes the arrow with his right hand (meaning it should be on the right side side im assuming) but when he pulls back its on the left side of the bow
His comments on open world fatigue are spot on. I love open world games (HZD, Origins, Witcher, Fallout, Skyrim) but the fatigue is real. Definitely appreciate that it's semi-open world.
An Egyptian era of GOW would be amazing!!
