    one detail I liked and found SUPER foreshadowing was the part when the serpent spits out the axe into the boat, because when Kratos picks it up a little text appears that reads "eitr imbued".
    After a bit of searching, it turns out that 'Eitr' is old Norse for 'poison', and according to Norse lore, Thor battles jormungandr at Ragnarok, killing the snake but simultaneously being poisoned by it, causing him to die after a few steps after the battle. Hence I believe that we gonna kill him with our axe that contains the serpents poison.
    Also, Ragnarok has started, because according to lore the events are set off with the death of Baldur, followed by a long winter (Fimbulwinter; the dwarves and Mimir mention it). The gods knew this, which is WHY Freya made him immortal, by talking to all creatures, trees and stones telling them not to harm him. Mistletoe I believe was too young to understand her, which is why it was his weakness (might be wrong on that one).
    It would be awesome and hilarious if the next game had a section where Atreus meets all the gods and insults them, like in the poem Lokasenna.

      She passed by mistletoe because she thought it was too small and harmless. She thought it could never be made into a weapon. She passed it willingly so its her fault that it ends up being the thing that kills him.

    This game’s ending is how most endings should be, honestly. We already knew there were going to be at least two more games, and the way this game ended set them up perfectly. With Thor popping up at the end, I haven’t been this hyped for a sequel in...ever.
    It was pretty genius how throughout the game there were many hints that Atreus was going to be Loki. Not just that, but so many other unanswered mysteries too, such as who blew the Serpent horn when Atreus got sick, and how did Faye die, why did the Dark Elf leader mean when he said we made a mistake, etc etc etc.
    Baldur quickly became the most interesting boss the series has ever had. They developed him so well and he felt like a real character instead of a random CPU God that was just in the way.
    Easily my game of the generation with Bloodborne. Sony does it again.

    The theme of parents sacrificing for their children is all over the game, but the focus is mainly on Kratos and Freya. I think that Laufey's sacrifice was so tragic because of the reveal that she was the last full-blooded giantess. She (or her people at least) had the gift of prophesy, and she knew what her son would grow up to be. She knew he and her husband would face horrible and tragic things, and she couldn't be there. I can't imagine her pain, knowing she would die before seeing her son grow up into the person she saw in her visions. And how hard must it have been for her to keep her identity, visions, and fears to herself! No wonder the mural in Jotunheim showed her arguing with the other Giants. It would have taken her a lot of convincing to leave her people and to go live out the prophesy that would end with so much death and despair for her people and her family. It's bittersweet that we never got to see her as a living person because the lack of her presence is so obvious in how it impacts the main characters.

      Maybe her death was intentional. Having the gift of foresight, she knew that Kratos and Atreus needed a push to embark on this journey which would result with the start of Ragnarok and the end of the Aesir. Maybe, like Dr Strange on Infinity War, she saw that her death would be the only way so things can play out as they must. And then she gave her life for it.

    Atreus won't be evil. Baldur was supposed to be the most moral, most beloved gods in the Norse mythology. In this game he was an absolute madman
    They're inverting the mythology

    • @earendilthemariner5546

      Baldur was the victim. Freya took everything from him. Literally the ability to feel; that includes feeling anything. Pain, temperature, thirst, hunger. He wanted it back. Odin lied and said the cure was in Jotunheim but Tyr locked it away. Kratos at the end even says Baldur wasnt tracking them. He was tracking Faye, the giant.
      Baldurs lines in the beginning show he thought kratos was the giant:
      "I know what you are"
      "I thought youd be bigger"
      "They said your kind was supposed to be so much smarter, so much better than us"

      Kinda ironic that baldur didn’t even really mean to bite off more than he could chew with kratos. It was an accident that kratos was well kratos and not a giant as baldur thought, it makes sense too during the first fight that baldur is saying things like “I’m not my brother, I just came here for information but you had to act all proud.” Oh my god that makes so much more sense now.

  • @raythewriter00
    @raythewriter00 6 років тому +234

    I think they touched on Midgard's actual size in the game. Remember Kratos' conversation with Atreus about the World Serpent and his size. Atreus said that he was big enough to wrap around the world- their idea of the world...Remember by this time Kratos has done some 'real' world traveling that's why he said it was an exaggeration. Midgard is relative to the Norse view of the world that's why all the other Gods Greek, Egyptian, and Japanese all exist within the same timeline.

      Well they may take the franchise to different countries...and at the end of GOW 3 Kratos fell into the ocean...I'm thinking it took Kratos some time to get to whatever part of Viking country he's in. And Tyr did a lot of traveling based on the lore so...Kratos had to see at least a small part of the world.

    • @Alice_Longinuse
      @Alice_Longinuse 6 років тому +1

      RaytheWriter it doesn't explain how kratos moved to norse myth which cory barlog will explain in future . Also you need travel stone to travel to another myth to protected you from void which erased you

    • @ReversedPolarity
      @ReversedPolarity 6 років тому +2

      RaytheWriter Well... quite, well, not quite. The godly realms may exist in the same space separated as dimensions but not at the same time in every dimension or subrealm. Some subrealms have different times like Helheim. They also know what happens in other dimensions but I don't think everyone has the power to know about that and nobody is supposed to cross from one realm to another through Earth (I wonder why...). Mimir has some kind of special sight and he knows things, so maybe that's what it takes to know what's happening in other realms, like some sort of multidimensional knowledge. Although, I think every dimension is attached to a certain region of Earth and they affect those parts in their own ways because gods are celestial creatures whose powers of creation are part of themselves too, so killing a god from Norse mythology won't affect the Egyptian gods' influence on Earth, at least we can assume that, unless there's an even better explanation on how Earth is connected to all these realms and how those territories were established in the first place.

    • @raythewriter00
      @raythewriter00 6 років тому +2

      I kinda figured the same thing. Like in the last God of War the Greek world was destroyed, but no other realm was effected. So I wonder how they are going to explain the travel to other planes or whatnot. I mean they could use the Unity stone or some variant, but that would be too simple. Or maybe killing one or more Cosmic being will have some effect on existence as a whole... I don't know, but it would be interesting to see.

      They knew that the Jotun Guardian was hiding somewhere in Midgard, yes. But when the protective spell was broken after Kratos cut down the tree, it must have been Atreus's presence that guided Baldur to their shack since Faye was already dead. After all, he's part giant.

  • @rossedwardmiller

    Everyone talking about Loki being “evil” check 14:00 - it’s all about perspective. Kratos even mentions it in this game. While our characters are working against the gods, those Norse gods think of Kratos and Atreus as the bad guys. It makes sense that Atreus is Loki - he and Kratos will be the downfall of all the Norse gods in the upcoming games.
    He may turn against Kratos for part of a future game, but he’s already “evil” in the minds of the Norse gods.

      I was irritated as fuck when Atreus’s mindset shifted into this, “holier than thou” moral high ground. Then, after a few of his ignorant statements in-game, I started to level with it. Atreus is just a kid, probably no more than 11 or 12 years old. He’s been lied to his entire life, and his father starts warming up to him and letting him in after revealing his godlike heritage. It’s a lot to take in, within a couple of moments. Plus, his snap back to reality through his error in judgment was just as believable. Great characterization from Sony Santa Monica with Atreus.

    So next game starts with Thor kicking the living crap out of you, destroying the Leviathan axe and abducting Atreus. He takes him to Asgard and adopts him as his "new little brother" just like Modi had said. There, the story can play out a little like the myths; Atreus would be a combination of the Loki of the books (constantly trolling the gods, joining Thor in adventures, maybe developing some sort of Stockholm syndrome companionship) and Thor's servant Thjalfi, who was a little boy that angered Thor and had to obey him in everything he did. This would open the door to playing as Atreus both in Asgard and in their excursions into Jotunheim as well as switching back to playing as Kratos seeking help from Brok and Sindri to reforge Leviathan and rescuing Atreus. Eventually they would reunite and join forces once again at some point in the game, concluding with a massive boss fight with Thor.
    Anyway, that's my idea for GoW II :P

      @ReversedPolarity 6 років тому +31

      Just because Atreus is going to become Loki in God of War doesn't mean he'll turn out evil (he might not even be Loki, who knows...). In God of War, good gods (like Odin or Thor) are often seen as good because they restore order, but sooner or later, they oppress other gods, mythological creatures and people because they listen to imperfect prophecies of uncertain futures and they're afraid of losing the throne and their control over "chaos". The bad gods (like Loki) are often seen as bad because they're chaotic elements/rebels in a tyrant's paradise. That can be seen as evil to some people because they are either satisfied with a false paradise or they work with the tyrant, even though those rebels might just be protecting the everyday people they care (like Mimir or Brok or Sindri or Freya). That fits with Atreus role in all of this. He's chaotic like his father, but he's taught to be better, to defend those who feel oppressed by the gods that abuse of their power. Good and evil come in many faces, don't quickly judge a book by its cover.

      Luckily no. I had beaten all Valkyries from the moment they were available, so most of them the moment you got the chip. The hardest Valkyrie by FAR for me was the one that does the 'valhalla' move 3 times in a row. If it landed i would be as good as dead, that one was quite frustrating i must say. But getting past it, and then completing the campaign and THEN fighting the final Valkyrie? I was so much stronger that my few deaths to the final Valkyrie were no issue. My frustration was already out from that earlier battle :D

    Other small details I liked about the game came right at the beginning when you meet and fight the "stranger" (aka Baldur). The game gives you little clues and you don't even realize it. When you first open the door to the meet him the camera shot is right over the bag of Faye's ashes giving the subtle hint that Baldur is actually tracking a giant (Faye's ashes) and not Kratos. Then after the fight when Kratos lets Atreus out of the hiding spot under the floor. Atreus gets out and Kratos begins to close the floor door the camera pans down to show where he is hiding the Blades of Chaos.

  • @thebarboxgamer2211

    I honestly believe that they are going in a different direction than just Kratos creating Ragnarok. I believe Fayes gift of vision led her to find Kratos and I believe Tyr led Kratos to this land since he can magically travel to different lands. Ragnarok is a cycle never ending and in this instance Kratos was floating by and Tyr brought Kratos to Faye. Faye sees that Kratos is different and wants to be better and forsees a different ending to Ragnarok, hence why a huge part of the game is character change and being better. Kratos imo is the end to the cycle of children killing parents and the ending of the cycle of Ragnarok which will change what will happen with Odin and the Giants.

    Honestly this game is the only game in this gen that could be called a perfect game , i mean the story is great the characters are interesting as hell and the voice acting is epic and the music / graphics are crazy and hands down its the best hack and slash game in this gen , this game is truly the 2018 GOTY winner but since uncharted 4 lost 2016 GOTY to overwatch it won't surprise me if God of war lose this year GOTY , i know red dead 2 - Spiderman will also be great but in terms of gameplay - Story then im Sorry but God of war >>> Spiderman >>> Red dead 2 .

    • @ReversedPolarity
      @ReversedPolarity 6 років тому +1

      God of War has the perfect balance to be the GOTY of 2018, even though Spider-Man and Red Dead 2 are also fair choices. I'm sure their stories will be amazing as well, I don't play Spider-Man or Rockstar games just for the playability, they usually have decent stories too, and clever side stories. But this game is the game nobody expected, it was a bold move nobody saw coming and it's a game changer for the franchise in many ways as well as a HUGE package. I can't say the same for Red Dead 2 yet, but Spider-Man has some potential game changers this year. I won't be upset about any of these potential winners because they're all fair winners, unless a stupid candidate wins, like these things usually go. But from what I've seen so far, God of War deserves to be GOTY, it's just the full package - a great story overall, great relatable characters with relatable problems even though it's a fantasy world, the graphics accompany the gameplay, the gameplay is decent with amazing cinematic combos and options, the customization is a really nice touch, there's tons of side missions with very different levels of mastery and lots of lore and easter eggs to find and it's hard to get bored of free roaming (although I expect Spider-Man and Red Dead 2 to succeed better on that feature). Great options all around, but God of War's story is really something this year. The writers certainly know what they're doing with the lore and I want to see more of them in the future.

    The way that they broke down the little things has me so hyped. Not putting emphasis on the characters names and their mythos was an amazing idea, and having mamir n the dwarves tell u the backstory of each character in reverse made it even better n slower to figuring out. Like reading the myths they sound all heroic but wen mamir is telling them he's actually showing the cruelty behind their stories. It seems the route that they're going, atreus will not only be the successor but also the savior come ragnorok (possibly). And seeing as he has Kratos Spartan rage he may even inherit the blades of chaos. But I wonder if they'll reveal to them how their destinies were changed. I feel like that can be something else that challenges atreus approach to his godhood if he knows how powerful and cruel he really was/is.

    It definitely did feel jarring when Atreus became cocky so suddenly. The writers did the best they could, but it’s not surprising a level was cut somewhere along the line that made that more natural. The rest of the game is so freaking well written, that’s he only reason I kind of noticed it felt off.
    That whole stretch of the game until the end felt pretty disjointed compared to the first 2/3 of the game. For a 25+ hour game that was this great though that is still a massive accomplishment!

      There was a line in the game in which Atreus asked Kratos "Would you let me kill you?" and Kratos replied, "If it meant you would live, yes." It may not be foreshadowing, but it at least sets up the idea of Kratos being willing to sacrifice his own life for his son, someone who is good-natured and is the prophesied Guardian of the Giants (according to their mural runes). It's a legacy thing more than anything, which is my favorite kind of story ever. A passing of the torch, if you will.

    • @ReversedPolarity
      @ReversedPolarity 6 років тому +8

      Lester Robinson I get where you come from, but I personally don't mind Atreus actually becoming Loki because, in God of War, the mythology turns upside down. What you think you know about gods is tested to the limit because both good and evil have many faces and in God of War, the "good" gods seem often afraid of losing the throne they fought so hard to get to make a difference in their own way. The "bad" gods, like Loki is often seen, can be seen as either evil or, in a certain way, the rebel guys that don't tolerate tyrany from other gods.
      In my mind, Atreus might become Loki, but he's not evil, he's going to be a rebel who will fight back Odin and Thor as we know. Rebels are often seen as evil to those who already are satisfied when they could be the everyday people saviors, while some tyrants see themselves as good in their own image because they feel their reasons are justifiable, however radical they are... it's a philosophical dilemma on black/white characters.

    Considering modi wanted to take atreas to asgard, and Baldur was close too, it seems either Thor or Odin will take him in the next game. Think about it. Baldur was able to lock the bridge into asgard, and said the full wait of asgard would come crashing down on them. Meaning there was a way to asgard, but only certain gods could travel there. Baldur also saw himself in helheim in the illusions and the illusion him said, "the feasting, the drinks, the woman, were for nothing," because he couldn't feel anything for what his mother had done to him. This means Valhalla will be in the next games and my body is ready.

    It makes perfect sense that Atreus is Loki and frankly works really well for the future development. In Norse Mythology, the gods and everyone viewed Loki as an outsider and a devious evil trickster that constantly went against them. But in the perspective of the game, Loki is kidnapped by the Norse Gods, who may potentially kill kratos, and he takes revenge on them in the name of his father. Loki immediatley comes out as a good guy in our eyes.

It was all a backdrop. With one purpose. Evolving the relationship between BOY and DAD. That was the point. Everything in between was just part of their journey and this time the journey matters not the mindless slaughter of Gods. Even if Ragnarok came basically

      This game is a set up for future ones. They planned multiple sequels for this game so it's understandable not to delve too deep into it.

    Who blew the horn while kratos and Atreus weren't even at the lake of nine?

    I have a feeling that Atreus will be the one to kill Kratos. The game makes too many references to a son killing his father that I feel is foreshadowing of the ultimate demise of the God of War. Not to mention it would be ironic that Kratos dies the same way this series starts: at the hands of family. Bitter sweet if it ends that way.

      This won't happen because there all about breaking the cycle

    the next game should have the first mission where they are trying to figure out a way to hide the jotunheim tower again. while encountering a few bosses along the way and stumbling onto another entirely different quest
    also. kratos has to kill thor and take mjolnir considering all its heirs are now dead and that would be super dope👌 he is the son of zeus after all🤷‍♂️

    Possibly something the game may be leading towards is Ragnarok not being a world ending episode, but simply the end of a cycle i.e. the moment where Midgard is freed from the influence of the gods, much like Greece was at the end of GOW3. Ragnarok would be more of a rebirth than an end. Will be the end of the bloody Aesir though!

    I feel like what they should have included in the game is the blades of exile instead of chaos because it follows the storyline and it would fit with the current story since he left the Greek pantheon to then start a family. Dont get me wrong, when he said that he was going home to dig up his past to get a flame that would work in hel I about shit a brick. I mean he's got the old scars, the white skin, the mark around his body, even the marks from the chains so how come the blades couldn't stay the same?

    I wished he'd asked what Thor and Odin and all the other gods were doing while Kratos was killing BOTH of Thors sons and his brother

      That question is already kinda answered in the game.. Mimir says.. Odin will not interfere the journey as he know he has the upper hand..

    • @vilebuddha883
      @vilebuddha883 6 років тому +3

      It’s been answered already. Odin was betting on Kratos kickstarting Ragnarok earlier than it was predicted to because that way, Odin’s enemies have less time to prepare and it gives him the upper hand. It comes at the cost of some of his family members lives but he still thinks he’ll be able to change his fate thanks to Atreus and Kratos shaking things up.

      Crap, so Thor won't die from Jormungandr's poison? Crap. Well, he and Kratos can still die by each other's hands I guess...Kratos is doing a great job ruining...err, I mean changing everyone's prophesied fates.

    Hey Mr Hanson- fun fact about myself: I have a pet peeve about people (for instance in movies and television shows) pretending to drink out of empty cups. Otherwise you are awesome good sir.

    So, at the end, is the mother like a time-traveller and went into the future or did she just saw the future before she died?

      Rui Carneiro she was a giant and in the game giants are known for having visions of the future. She just saw it there was no time travel
