The Innocents with Deborah Kerr has always been one of my favorite ghost movies. Several film versions of this Henry James novella have been produced, but all fell short--until this one. I am pleasantly surprised at how good this is, and I think it does an even better job than my old favorite.
I just learned the great actress Diana Rigg died yesterday,September 10th 2020, at the age of 82. This woman was one of the most amazing actresses and has performed in many movies and shows. I first saw her in the Avengers acting alongside Patrick McNee. Loved the series. She married James Bond in one of those movies. For more modern roles a couple roles was one in Doctor Who and also a part in Game of thrones. This lady had an amazing career and was highly respected. She will be missed. RIP Dame Diana Rigg. You'll be missed by your many admirers. As you watch this movie please give her a moment in your thoughts. She played Mrs Grose in this movie.
amen--Diana was KILLER! Loved her. Did you know that the Avengers creators were trying to think of a name for her character and a guy said M appeal--for male appeal---and thus came Emma Peel.
I believe she played Emma Peal (?) With another character, John Steed in a TV program, "The Avengers"? Back in the 60s I'm 77 now, no longer a teenager but if I remember right, that's a correct guess? It was a fun intriguing series!😊
I really love this movie. Back in the day, when recording films from tv on VHS tapes was cool, my parents recorded this one for me. Still have it! Still love it.
I decided to watch this without reading the comments. For the most part, I have faith in old movies because the quality in acting feels so much more authentic to me. And this movie did not disappoint! I have heard of the novel, always wondered what the title itself meant. I have never read the book, seen the movie, or any of its versions. I look forward to watching The Innocents now. If this is the version of the original and I find it this good, then I have a lot to look forward to. I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone but I do want to share my sentiment for the children. They were innocent the whole time. And I want to say I am so impressed by the little actor that played Miles. The ending was stunning...and unexpected.
Omg, my heart. Great movie and the acting of the kids specially the boy Miles is superb, excellent. His acting is so intense. Enjoyed the movie thanks so much.
I love this version! First, the children are EXCELLENT. Particularly the boy who plays Miles. He's charming and creepy all at once. You really believe that a creepy man like Peter Quint is in his body! Very good job with him and Flora's dynamics. I think it was a good idea to make Mrs. Walker a widow (the nanny was originally a young girl about 20 in other versions) but Valerie Bertinelli plays the part very well. She plays naive and knowledgeable very well. It is very possible that Mrs. Walker feels guilty about being attracted to the dashing Mr. Goff--women often feel disloyal to their deceased husbands in the Victorian Era. Also, you get the feeling that Mrs. Walker's husband was maybe not interested in the physical side of marriage, so Mrs. Walker might have been repressed. So the question still remains, are the children haunted? Or is Mrs. Walker just having psychological problems? I love, love, love the amazing Diana Rigg in this. The setting of Bly is also beautiful--a perfect setting for a sinister story. The actors who played Quint and Jessell were spot on, I thought too. Very nice effort. (Check out the Innocents with Deborah Kerr she was amazing as the governess)
The children.. They're superb actors.. Giving such sinister looks and smiles believably, even when they're not of age to understand these gestures.. Wow.. The boy especially, he deserves an award..
...not of the age to understand these gestures? Ummm... I’ve encountered plenty of kids who certainly could do them, & did understand...we used to call them “hams” for being adept at expressing themselves on demand. Loved the spotlight.
@@Chimonger1 I should hope you're right, that children currently acquire a knowledge and understanding of sexuality at an early age. Any who don't will suffer like those in bygone times, enduring feelings they can't understand.

Hi TVTerrorLand, I almost never comment, but the quality of your rare and hard to find (sometimes nearly impossible to dredge up) offerings compel me to say: YOU ROCK! You have greatly enriched my life, thank you.
It’s actually the story told in Henry James ‘Turn of the Screw’, with the best film version being “The Innocents” made in 1961 with Deborah Kerr. Unlike the garbage version produced recently by Netflix under the name “The Haunting of Bly Manor”, neither the original book, nor the truly terrifying 1961 movie contain the obligatory gay/lesbian agenda foisted on the paying subscribers of Netflix.
I absolutely loved this movie! The special effects aren't great (it's a TV movie from the '90s, go figure), but if you can't look past that you're doomed to hate any low-budget movie. Exceptional acting in this movie, especially from the two children! If you have no imagination of your own, or can't appreciate the art of using uncertainty to create fear, you'll probably hate it. I think it's a stellar adaptation of a brilliantly crafted novella. Thank you so much, TVTERRORLAND, for uploading this!
Heeeyyyyy, I thought that The Haunting of Bly Manor was an original story, only to find out there's an old, better version of the show out here. Glad I stumbled on this.
I saw this when it aired on TV when I was a child. It scared me so much it gave me nightmares. I immediately went to find the book, and then I re-watched it, despite the nightmares. It's one of my favorites.
I was just diagnosed this week with COVID-19. I practiced all the safety protocols as I was tending my very frail, ill parents, ages 91 and 98. THANK YOU! I saw this movie as a young teen and my mind was blown, I've been looking for this for decades. Fascinating, the idea of corruption: villains turning victims into villains.
Well..yes no happy ending ..But that's the way life turns out sometimes....This adaption stuck to the original story by Henry James. At least with the ending..Miles dies of a heart attack....from the strain of being separated from Quint...Some adaptions make it seem as if the Governess was responsible...by smothering. him to death...or pushing him down the stairs...That is not the ending in the James story...The true ending is the one shown here.
I am poorly in bed with m.e. thankyou for taking my mind off myself. I have teddy and kitty on my bed. Its lonely being poorly. But my guardian angel is nearby,
The thing that chilled me the most was how the little boy that played Miles could act like a grown man, in mannerisms, and mentality, it was scary to me. And the way that Valerie Bertinelli's character, Helen Walker, was unnerved and slightly afraid of the boy at first, that's how I would have been around him too, if I had to be a nanny to such a creepy boy.
This is sad. She recognized the children had been sexually abused and wanted to free them from the spirits trying to possess them. I was not expecting this...
For a creepy tv movie.. Its a lot better than some I have paid to go see. I thought Valerie Bertinelli did very well!! And that Myles was a creepy little kid!! Very good actor!
Well, Valerie Bertinelli was pretty popular back in the day, but like many actors and actresses today, she never could really act. What I mean is , in every role they play themselves, unlike a Tom Hanks or Meryl Streep. Whether she's playing this role, or Barbara in One Day at a time, she plays the role exactly the same. She isn't who I would've cast, but she wasn't terrible.

I love this kind of movies and enjoy them very much...honestly,I enjoy with every single second of this one, even the whole cast, every thing is really fantastic 😍❤
The problem with this telling of this classic is that it comes right out and admits there are ghosts. The genius of the book and the original movie, The Innocents, with Debra Kerr, is that it never does. Mixed with extreme innocence, religion, and sexual repression, is this back story, so that you’re never truly sure if the ghosts are real or if the nanny is imagining it all. The innuendo is part of the creepiness. You’re never sure how innocent anyone really is. I knew it was going to be rough when they had the main character be a widow. It’s a good effort, and maybe one you can like, if you haven’t read the book or seen the original movie.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. If you haven't seen it, The Orphanage (2007) is an excellent film. It's Spanish language, but you should be able to view it with captions. I loved it!
but I could throw up at how many times I've seen a boring movie, or read an even more boring book, about some young girl who is a governess out in the country and either there is a ghost, or she falls in love, or there's a maniac. Fail.
Deborah Kerr could deliver an intense performance alright. She was amazing in Black Narcissus too. Not a patch on the woman who played Sister Ruth mind you!
This is a really enjoyable film based on Henry James's novel 'A Turn Of The Screw'. Henry James was the brother of the famous philosopher and psychologist William James. William's ideas centred on how we know the world (epistemology). In this film it's ambiguous as to whether what the nanny is experiencing is real or imaginary, and that's what makes it so eerie. Henry and William shared similar interests. Henry James has been described as a novelist who wrote like a psychologist and William James as psychologist who wrote like a novelist. They both were very interested in spiritualism and attended a variety of séances. They were very aware of charlatanism but also in those occasions which defied ordinary explanation and which challenged them to ask what is reality and how do we know what we presume to know.
Well done remake of the innocents 1961! I always thought it was an eerie movie! I would of never known it was the same movie if I didn't watch the whole thing!
I remember recording this on tv many years ago. It was a great way to spend weekends when there just wasn't anything to do. Thank you for sharing & bringing me back : )
I love reading the comments to determine whether or not I would waste my time watching it or is it worthwhile. With these comment so mixed up, I could not ascertain the value of this movie. So I am going to give it a try, and next see if I can view "The Innocents" as many comments indicated it was a classic with that wonderful actress, Deborah Kerr. However, I have one serious complaint with those whose comments are vulgar. This is offensive to me and should not be allowed to post. I'm sure I'm not the only person who abhors uncouth language, when the same thing could be said in a polite way.
Regina Maraist You cannot go by the opinions of others because that's their personal opinion and everybody has different tastes and opinions so opinions don't really matter except your own opinion... Well, that's my opinion anyway 😁😁😁😁😁😁
I totally agree if those who are inclined to such speech, should avoid sites that cater people who aren’t expecting as much it would be less agravating
I am a big fan of Turn Of the Screw, and usually derisive of adaptations. The Innocents is wonderful, a personal favorite. And I have to say that I did quite enjoy this version. Especially for a T.V. movie. In the end, well done!
Wow great movie. I usually don't like scary movies w/kids in them, but this was pretty good. The boy/Niles great acting on his part too. TY for sharing,
A lot of people here compared the movie to an original from the 1960's; But, I never seen the original. Therefore, I'm basing this movie on its own standing. I thought it had some pretty decent old actors in it from back in the '70's-'90's. Not bad for an old movie. Thanks for sharing.
Ok, I went and looked up the supposed original "The Innocent (1961)" film and watched it. One, its black and white; two, the movies, though they differ a bit, are too much a like to really say that the older one was better. I think people go on how they felt when they seen the first movie (the original - the innocent), which most seen as a kid or teenager. This is sooo unreliable and here's why - My generation was the first to see the most frightening shark movie ever "Jaws " and the most scariest zombie movie ever "Dawn of the Dead". Both, came out when I was just a young teenager and we seen them at a Drive Inn Theater. Drive Inn Theaters don't even exist anymore now, sadly... love the experience of seeing scary movies outside away from home and in the car. Atmosphere really helps in these movies. Also, now that I'm older and have seen tons of both shark and zombie movies, the famous old scariest ones are well, quite frankly no where near as scary today. Back then, everything being seen was so new and seemed so realistic. Yet, now you can watch them and see just how fake Jaws the shark was when he was up close and personal, LoL . And of course, the zombie movies, as all movies, have come a long way too. So, there you have it. Most movies are not as good 25-45 years later as they were when they came out. Now, there's an exception to this rule with some movies that are more intellectual than visual, like The Who done it kind of investigative movies, etc. Most of those would probably be just as good today as they were back when they first came out. But, most things that involve a visual effect, especially in the paranormal areas, need to be closer to the last decade. Personally, I liked this movie 'The Haunting of Helen Walker' better than the one before. Because, it is in color and the acting and all was, I thought, better in this one. So, there you have it.
The story, narration and exposition of this film are psychologically insightful. It's not surprising that it's originally based on a novel by Henry James and not on a screenplay by some tv-screenwriter. The acting is good too.
The original film, The Innocents, was a masterpiece in every way. A great deal of that is due to the direction and the acting and the delicate subtly of the elements of the original story - are there truly ghosts or is the character of the governess a very suggestible woman who knows very little about children. This version, while very well photographed and in color, just can't live up to the 1961 film. People today are generally not so educated and demand direct spelling out of all detail.
Yes, this version of the story is a bit more explicit, but still quite effective. I wish the 1959 teleplay with Ingrid Bergman was generally available; caught the live broadcast and know video exists. The Turn of the Screw remains the only ghost story --if, in fact, a ghost story it is--to actually frighten me.
I love the Deborah Kerr version, and the novella, and will forever see this as the ghost story James himself said he intended it to be. I saw “The Innocents” for the first time when I was 12, I watched it with my mom. I think it’s what started me on a lifelong love of ghost stories, especially the old classics.
To all those who are feeling ill and lonely; my heart breaks for each and every one of you.
Sending love and best wishes.

It's not a remake. They're both based on the novel Turn of the Screw.
My favorite era for a scary movie.The castles,clothing,music....perfect for 😱😱😱!!! 👿

I loved it!
Filmed at Englefield House near Redding, west of London. Good show. At 1:01:23 I would have been out of there and no turning back. Creepy!
It's a beautiful movie to watch. Thank you
The boy Miles is so talented at this young age.
A real good horror movie .... . I never read silly comments . I just watch the movie . Thanks for sharing
The Innocents definitely scarier, but love all period pieces so okay I guess. Thanks for posting.
Deborah Kerr was excellent in The Innocents...(another good horror movie to watch)..with your heart pounding!!
Iris Acheson Miles and Flora
but I could throw up at how many times I've seen a boring movie, or read an even more boring book, about some young girl who is a governess out in the country and either there is a ghost, or she falls in love, or there's a maniac. Fail.
Deborah Kerr could deliver an intense performance alright. She was amazing in Black Narcissus too.
Not a patch on the woman who played Sister Ruth mind you!
quite possibly one of the creepiest thrillers Ive seen. Love it though! Oh My these kids are fabulous actors.
Am here 2020 and I know someone will be watching this by 2021
This is a really enjoyable film based on Henry James's novel 'A Turn Of The Screw'.

I remember seeing this on TV many years ago. now I get to enjoy it again!!
Well done remake of the innocents 1961! I always thought it was an eerie movie! I would of never known it was the same movie if I didn't watch the whole thing!
I remember recording this on tv many years ago. It was a great way to spend weekends when there just wasn't anything to do. Thank you for sharing & bringing me back : )
I enjoyed this movie. Thanks!
The costumes...cast....wow ! The music and set are stunning as well and have the late Diana Rigg on ensemble
+Regina Maraist You are not alone, although I have been guilty two or three times. Manners are in short supply nowadays.
Hopefully you dont get teased or made fun of. Every time I post a comment, all I get is crapped on
Regina Maraist You cannot go by the opinions of others because that's their personal opinion and everybody has different tastes and opinions so opinions don't really matter except your own opinion... Well, that's my opinion anyway 😁😁😁😁😁😁
I totally agree if those who are inclined to such speech, should avoid sites that cater people who aren’t expecting as much it would be less agravating
welcome to the internet.
I am a big fan of Turn Of the Screw, and usually derisive of adaptations. The Innocents is wonderful, a personal favorite. And I have to say that I did quite enjoy this version. Especially for a T.V. movie. In the end, well done!
if that's a lake, my yard is a farm

Wow!!! Loved the movie alot!!! Thanks for sharing!!! :) Totally awesome!!! :)
I love Valerie, she exudes sweetness and honesty I could never see her as a villain she is just too kind in heart.
The actor who plays Peter Quint in this film is the voice of Frodo Baggins from The animated Lord of the Rings film in 1978.
Yes) great actor and musician Christopher Guard =)
Poor Miles, the evil he must have seen. That ending is so sad.
Excellent movie. Well written.
I have seen other versions, but not this one, and Valerie is in it, I am a big fan of her, so this must be a good movie. Thanks for uploading it.
The original I thought was a Henry James novella, no?
So this is from 1995? Wow! I remember that year so well!
"The Haunting of Bly Manor" was a remake of this movie "The Haunting of Helen Walker" ("Turn of the Screw") Both movies were very good.
Good movie, good acting, nice story to it👍🏼👌🏼
