00:00 If You Only Had One Suit Introduction
It will be no surprise to you that here at the Gentleman’s Gazette, we simply adore suits! And, while it’s fun to grow a collection of suits, it got us to thinking: If we could only have one suit, what would it be?
02:17 Why You Need A Suit
With all those concerns aside, you should have at least one suit in your wardrobe. Throughout any man’s life, there are going to be some events that require a higher level of formality than the typical day might, and this is where having one classic suit is really going to come in handy.

    → Trousers Details
These are going to be dictated by comfort body type and personal choice.
    13:29 Cuffed vs. Uncuffed Trousers
    13:57 Pleated vs. Flat-fronted
    14:23 High-waisted Trousers

    21:57 How Much To Spend?
This is going to come down to your own personal financial situation but remember that investing upfront on quality can often pay dividends for the future.
It should also be remembered that a well-made suit doesn’t always have to be expensive as you can pursue the vintage route as well.

This could not have come at a BETTER TIME. I have an event this Saturday and am desperate to find 'the one suit to rule them all' (even though there's no such thing). I truly thank you for not only improving my sense of style over the years, but also for helping me find my true personality. Thank you...

      An event this Saturday?
Hit your suit store _today_ and see what they’ve got.
If it’s a big chain (Mens Warehouse, Brooks Brothers, Jos A Bank, etc…) you may not be able to get it tailored in such short notice, aside from maybe just hemming the pants.
If that’s the case and you need alterations, ask them if there’s a local tailor you could take it to.
It’ll be more expensive, but the turnaround will be much shorter, if you’re lucky.

I'm on the other end of the spectrum, as a retiree, I do need a suit occasionally for weddings and funerals. I chose a charcoal gray, fully canvased in tropical wool since I live in the south. My accessories are the center of attention; easily changed for the occasion. The challenge is maintaining one's weight to maintain the fit.

  • @Jessie_Helms
    @Jessie_Helms 2 роки тому +28

Dark-ish navy or grey, notch lapel, 2 button, side vents, flat front, plain bottom.
Dark-ish buttons, no bells/whistles (I.e. pick stitching or ticket pockets).
Also you can get flap/jetted convertible pockets, aim for that if you can.
You can wear them to basically anything and your accessories will determine how formal/casual your outfit is.
Personally I’d favor navy over grey.
If you go with, say, French blue, which looks fantastic, you can’t really wear that to a funeral, for example.
But black would be far too formal for most weddings, parties, and interviews.

He just brought his black 3 button suit on our cruise and while it worked for some of our photos, I can see where a dark navy 2 button would be a versatile choice for having the option to break it up for casual options. Can we do that or should there be another navy jacket for this? We coordinate a little and navy is my best color so...even better.

For first/second suit I'd say choose a navy suit ranging from midnight blue to a dark "mid blue", and then a "medium grey" erring on the opposite formality scale as your blue choice. I'm not a fan of dark charcoal/black suits - they look too sterile and they show lint and dandruff easily. With a charcoal/black suit it's easy to look like a service employee or Young Republican page boy.
I got a pair of a mid blue tropical wool and a dark "medium" grey, and still wear them the most. The grey is formal and standard, and the blue is a bit more fun and personal (but still formal enough for almost anything today). I feel like the opposite combo of a dark navy and a grey on the border of light and medium grey would accomplish the same thing.

A three-piece suit is almost always more versatile than a two-piece suit because three piece suits almost always come with belt loops. Sew on braces buttons, and it can be worn as a three piece with braces, as a two-piece with braces, and as a two-piece with a belt, all for a rather small upcharge.
Also, try to buy suits that can be mixed and matched. A versatile suit should also be wearable as a sport coat, slacks, or odd waistcoat. Overall, one suit can provide many different outfits when you buy wisely.

If someone was to only own ONE suit, I'd personally suggest that suit to be in either charcoal or navy.

I agree on the condition that the buyer actually intends to wear a suit on a daily basis. That is, outside formal events like weddings and funerals. The thing is, if you want to dress down a suit it doesn't have to be a suit in the first place. Nowadays you can get away with sport coat and chinos just about everywhere. If you only intend to wear a suit on special occasions, black (or perhaps charcoal) is the safest choice.

Call me frugal, or actually call me old timey, your suit was your Sunday best, what you wore for a job interview or a court appearance and not everyday. Otherwise it was sports jacket and slacks. At this current time I do not actually own a suit, I have a navy blazer and matching trousers that I have worn for many formal events, and of course I can go the full highland rig, kilt, sporran, argyle jacket and Inverness cape for meeting Royalty. The most formal events I have ever attended were a reception at number 10 downing street and I wore a cloth cap throughout the whole proceedings, bit of a rebel, and a reception in the House of Lords where I wore the full highland rig.

Gentlemans, basically I’m a very classic person thats like to put a little bit of my own perspective of modern in everything that I’m wearing. I found it hard to look as classic as you guys due to the fact that in my country (Bulgaria), there are very small amount of jobs and with that - occasions in which people are using suits. Nevertheless I am very grateful of your work and everything that you do for the community. After all we can still go with the suit-casual look, but not like the most of the people that look overly modern with superthight suit and shirt or something that looks very cheap.
    All the best,
    🧥👔

Agreed. I am very jealous every time it appears in a video, though I suspect it wouldn't look anywhere near as good on me, as we are different shapes.
I live in anticipation of the day I find the suit that suits me as well as that one does Sven. 🙂

If I were to only have one suit it would be a midnight blue is midnight blue tropical wate tweed with shall lapel, 2 by 3 roll 2 buttons and a tuxedo low button full fabric waistcoat.( Low diamond waistcoat and low and low U-shaped double breasted suit jacate overe it)
2nd choice would be a burgundy suit that looks black from across the room.

I really like charcoal because its just easy for all formal occasions but not black so can be worn more than just funerals, at least that's the only time I've ever needed a black suit.

If I had to pick one suit, it would be between my brown or blue tenth doctor suits (replica suits from doctor who) they’re both the same high quality cut but one is brown with light blue pinstripes and the other is dark blue with maroon pinstripes. If I had to pick one I’d probably say the brown suit because if it’s more unique appearance and higher versatility with different shirts and ties. I must say that the blue suit is a nice change occasionally and seeing it go would be truly sad, especially because it feels awesome to wear and run around in.

As a freelance musician, the plain black suit is the standard call. Nowadays with black dress shirt...ugh. Next is black tie. So it can double if need be. So my gig suit is a decent fused suit from a national chain whose cut just happens to fit me pretty well. Tux is the same source, but has notched lapels!!!!! :^0

I am a huge fan of double-breasted suits, so that's the style I typically go with. My first suit was a medium-grey double-breasted suit. It's the only suit I have so far, but I plan to get a navy double-breasted suit next.

It’s tough to have more than one suit because a genuine suit that is worth your money is always gonna be $1,500 and up. Similar to having more than one fancy watch or more than one fancy leather jacket. People who have kids usually cannot afford these things.

I have Navy and Charcoal Gray - one set each of Jacket + Trousers + Sleeveless dress. They're both single-breasted. For men I'd say Jacket + Vest + Two trousers.

  • @nathanieleisenman2487
    @nathanieleisenman2487 2 роки тому

Your FIRST business suit: navy or charcoal worsted wool, notched lapels, single-breasted with two buttons, two vents, flap pockets without ticket pocket, minor surface detail like sharkskin or pick and pick is fine but no pinstripes or other patterns and otherwise pick the conservative option every time you need to make a choice.
But your ONLY suit is quite a bit different than your FIRST suit. If it were your only suit, you'd want it to be more casual and able to work as a blazer or sport jacket which means different stying details. Still single-breasted with notched lapels, this time in a three-roll-two, one vent, slightly more contrast on the buttons, patch hip pockets, still navy wool with no pattern but this time something coarser and with more texture than a worsted wool.
But if you were really in this position, I don't see why it wouldn't be smarter to just get a navy blazer and grey flannel trousers instead of a suit. It'll never look out of place at a job interview for a job that never requires tailoring, much less at church, a wedding, or even a funeral. At least, it wouldn't unless you socialize with people who wear suits often, in which case you'll have more than one.

I'm a muscular guy and every suit I have tried is for pear shaped or straight shape men, if I even find a suit that fit at shoulders, it will look like a dress. Sadly it's very expensive to sew a new suit, so I have to forgo this, but maybe I just need one, if that's the case I can go with this expense
