For those who are just breaking into the world of menswear, assembling outfits that are harmonious can seem to be a daunting challenge.
Start by assembling a base wardrobe of solid and conservative colors. Namely things in the grayscale, shades of brown, and shades of blue.
With that in mind, let's cover the fundamental knowledge you'll need to commit to memory in order to start experimenting, that is how to understand the color wheel.
    PRIMARY COLORS
Simply stated, primary colors are the foundational colors from which all other colors are mixed. In other words, you don't mix any colors to get red, yellow, or blue, they simply are what they are.
    SECONDARY COLORS
Purple, green, and orange. The secondary colors are made by mixing two primary colors together.
    TERTIARY COLORS
They're made by mixing a primary color and a secondary color together. These colors can sometimes be referred to by their own unique names, for example, the combination of blue and green can sometimes be called teal but in more simple terms, they can also be referred to by simply combining the names of the colors.
    COLOR TEMPERATURE
Of the three primary colors, red and yellow are said to be warm whereas blue is considered cool. It follows then that any combination of red and yellow will also, by default, be a warm color. Meanwhile, when cool blue mixes with one of the warm primaries, different things result.
    COLOR INTENSITY
Another word for color is hue and that's usually the word used when we're talking about the relative lightness or intensity of a color.
    COLOR RELATIONSHIPS
Colors also have relationships in terms of how they interact when they're kept separate.
    ANALOGOUS COLORS
Simply put, analogous colors are ones that are similar in temperature and are found close to each other and sometimes directly adjacent on the color wheel.
    COMPLEMENTARY COLORS
In simplest terms, any two colors that are directly across from one another on the color wheel are considered complementary.
Why is it important to understand color relationships in terms of putting together your outfits?
The answer is because color is the principal way that we can direct the eyes of others. The primary objective of any colors in an outfit should be directing the eyes of the viewer to your face and also making your face look as well colored and healthy as possible.
Tips on how to wear and pair your colors effectively:
Regarding the degree of contrast between a man's skin tone and his hair color, men fall into one of three basic groups; high contrast, which is most typically characterized by fair skin and dark hair though the reverse could also be true for darker skinned men with dyed or graying hair, medium contrast where the colors are different but not to a large extent, and low contrast either fair-skinned with blond or graying hair or dark skin with dark hair.
High contrast men can more safely experiment with wearing combinations of bolder colors. For example, pairing primaries or complementary colors together. Just don't go for the true hues of all of these colors when you're pairing them together.
A medium contrast man can, of course, wear a garment that is bolder in color but he should be mindful that if he does so, it will draw some attention away from his face. Again as with many things in menswear, confidence is key here.
Low contrast men are the ones who should be most careful in pairing together contrasting colors, really make sure that you've muted the hues of the contrasting colors if you decide to wear them as that's the best way that you'll be able to pull them off.
In conclusion, then, knowledge of the color wheel and the broader discipline of color theory is one of the most helpful and versatile tools in the well-dressed gentleman's arsenal. With this knowledge, he can be confident that he's put together harmonious outfits that complement his natural tones and draw proper attention to his face.

Technically, the (subtractive) primary colors, as used in the visual arts (ink, paint), are yellow, cyan, and magenta. But blue is close to (analogous to) cyan on the wheel, and red is analogous to magenta, so referring to these more familiar colors suffices for illustrating the concepts in the video.
Why is it really yellow, cyan, and magenta? Because yellow is the additive combination of red and green light, as detected by the respective cone cells in the retina of the human eye. Cyan is the additive combination of green and blue light, and blue light added with red yields the perception of magenta.
Thus the subtractive primary colors, applicable to opaque paints [they're opaque--so mixing them results in something less transmissive than the single least transmissive element in the mix], derive from the (additive) tricolor receptors--red, green, and blue--of the human eye.
BTW, people perceive wavelengths shorter than pure blue, (i.e. violet), because in addition to blue cones, the red-sensitive cones also have some sensitivity in this spectral region. However, the subjective experience of violet/purple/magenta/etc. always comes from varying degrees of stimuli of both the red and blue retinal cones.
    Now y'all'll be well-dressed and well-educated!

Knowing how to find the right colors for your skin tone would probably be a good jumping-off point; you can take a look at our video (and article) on the subject, here:

Watching the style they already use it's also important, that way you know if they would like something more conservative , comfy, or even something fancy ... then you can play with the fabrics and styles

Thank you for this informative video. How do you feel about the old saying: "Blue and green must never be seen", implying that one shouldn't wear both colours together?

    • @gentlemansgazette
      @gentlemansgazette  5 років тому +5

I must admit, it's not a saying I've heard! Even so, the various examples of garments showcased in this video by Raphael and me which feature both blue and green should indicate that we believe the colors can certainly be worn together. As we point out in the video, moderation and harmony should always be one's principal priorities (after fit, of course). Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@gentlemansgazette It's quite old I think - I remeber my mother telling me that her grandmother used to say it. Maybe Mr. Schneider is familiar with the German version (Grün und Blau trägt die Sau)?
The other day I was wearing a dark green jumper with navy trousers, more or less the same colours as the tie and jacket combination in this video, and couldn't help but think it was somehow 'wrong'...

I easily get a tan during summer so I suppose I have to take that into account. Like a squirrel.😁

I at work wear either a dark green, light blue, true blue, or navy blue polo with either khaki or black slacks. What sports coat color would be recommended to pair well? Up to two different coat recommendations is ok if one color won't fit well with all pairings.

Tangential but effective! I like this guy. But I didn't need his help to find my way into a teal suit :P.

Thank you for mentioning redheads, very little information out there. So is pastel blue mean between light and medium blue? Thank you in advance.
Oh and would have been nice to clarify where redheads fall with contrast. Myself have more towards a medium tone (especially when tan in Summer) and so would say fall around a low to medium contrast. Which explains why most bright colours do not look the best, though found out by accident a clear spruce green looks smashing.

I much prefer dark, rich colours, & honestly, I despise brown! What tips do you have for colours & combinations that will create/accentuate an ashen/pale sk8n tone? Mt go-to's are shades of black, dark grey, wine red, amethyst purple, & very occasionally ivory.

I'm very 'low contrast'--fair skin with hair and beard that are blond-white--but in some casual outfits I prefer a 'high contrast' look--say, wearing a black jacket and black turtleneck--it's somewhat distinctive looking.
