  • The Bugatti brand is defined by the way its cars meld the mechanical and the artistic. Experience a once-in-a-lifetime moment honoring their originator, Ettore Bugatti, at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. These cars have never been gathered together in the same location since they raced together in their first year in 1934.

I've seen a loooot of different cars in person, from all eras, race cars, street cars, and none of them entranced me like this car did. I think it was the black number 3, Lime Rock Historics. Every inch of that car is worth looking at.

I LOVE the original Bugattis. Yo me they sum up everything that was pre-war race cars, but Bugatti did it better, with straight 8 engines, superchargers, and magnesium wheels.
For me though, it's the Type 51. I love the wheels.

Bugatti Type 59s used a version of the straight-eight Type 57's engine sitting in a modified Type 54 chassis.
3.3L Roots-type supercharged straight-eight, twin overhead camshafts driven by straight cut gears at the rear of the engine. (250 bhp)
4-speed gearbox. Solid axles with leaf spring suspension and cable-operated drum brakes. Ettore Bugatti was not fond of hydraulic brakes.
The Type 59s was handicapped by its weight, limited power, dated gearbox and poor brakes, compared to its GP competitors.
The frame was cut with holes to lighten it to keep under the 750kg limit.

It is a shame, because apparently it is a very good handling car. If only Bugatti managed to make the car lighter, then probably the brakes won't be much of an issue (less weight, less work for the brakes). Plus the horsepower deficit won't a such a big problem of it were lighter.

@@jcgabriel1569 the T59 is light enough, weight differences between them are small.

Thanks to my father, I have a lifelong affinity for Bugatti. But hearing the lady and gentlemen talk, I do have to say #firstworldproblems ... Events like Pebble Beach just seem to be self- congratulatory for being, first and foremost, rich, and a distant second about collectors objects. No actual enthusiasm here

You don't spend that kind of money unless you're enthusiastic about the brand. And lucky they do, otherwise these cars would rust away. We'd never get to see them.

Yes, it is quite a gathering of « rich » people in there but I am certain that there are also some « not that rich » in there both sharing a genuine passion for these cars. I do have 4 pre-war cars amongst which 3 racing ones and one roadster. I am and don’t consider myself rich although I am happy I spent my hard earned money on these toys. 😉

Nothing is perfect… anything interesting amongst the popular classes initially will attract others and at some point the wealthiest. These cars were initially kept by people with passion who were not rich as their value went extremely low to the point that some were destroyed and the metal recycled. It’s only later that the gentrification occurred which brought its lot of good and bad things. The worst thing is that most popular enthusiasts were progressively pushed out to let place to the wealthier. The good thing is that more means and ressources were allocated to restore and reproduce parts which became unavailable… There is always a compromise or two faces to a coin…
