Wow! You gotta love the guys from Novation! This update implements EVERYTHING I ever wished for. Basically, five years after the first release, the BS II now becomes a whole new beast and more powerful than ever before. It was a great monosynth before, but now it is simply amazing. But, off course, there's already people complaining about the update process. OMFG get over it! It's simple, reliable and only takes a few minutes. After that, you can still deinstall chrome and delete your google account again, if that's what you want. No problem whatsoever. Thank you Novation and happy 25th anniversary Bass Station!
Bought one over 5 years ago when they came out. It was a good decision; great synth, especially for the price. Nice to see those new feature - the variable keytracking and looping EGs are particularly cool.
Edit: Customer service has sent me a new Bundle Code this morning, thank you! This sounds great, but not giving a direct link to firmware updates ridiculous. Especially with this "Bundle Code" requirement to register your product. I assume this was on some Ableton Live Lite piece of paper that I threw away two years ago when I bought my BSII? I have contacted support, hopefully I can get a new one.
Thanks Novation for these great new features on already an older instrument. BS2 is serious value for money! One big thing I miss on the BS2 though: save sequences per patch! When I started using the BS2 I was creating a lot of nice sequences and sound ideas during a couple of hours. But unfortunately, after a while I just realised BS2 only saves 4 sequences in total, where I really thought it was per patch. I lost all but last 4 sequences, and so a lot of potential hit material disappeared into space!! :p
It couldn't physically store more, without losing some of the patch memory instead (less slots), but it seems like something that maybe the librarian, or the "component manager" could provide.... maybe.
Yeah, I guess it's because of the memory limitation. The librarian would not give any solution that's usable for live use, unfortunately. The moog sub(sequent) 37 stores sequence per patch, only one sequence per patch though, but that's enough. Everytime you have a nice patch/sequence combo, you can save it and you still can flip sounds on the same sequence as well, like the BS can. A BS hardware 'memory hack' would be really great. It's possible on synths of more than 30 y/o (polysix: kiwisix / pro one: MTG turbo CPU /...), so I guess it might be possible on the BS2 as well, but unfortunately I'm not the one that will be able to make this happen :)
Yep. The DSI Mopho stores one sequence for each patch too... which is a great little synth, apart from the lack of knobs to program it with. For live use, I guess that's much less of an issue.
Paraphonic Mode is just Mindblowing 🤯 How does it work? Did Novation surprisingly find two unused Oscilators 😉 Or is it just the separation between Osc1 and Osc2?
Just a separation between OSC1 und OSC2, like in Arp Odyssey or Novation Mono Station. Try it in combination with the ringmodulator for interesting sequenzes like in NINs track "the hand that feeds you"!
Its great Novation are keeping this hardware going with new updates. Maybe design some new faceplates for it as well to keep it fresh? I am sure people would buy them. You have a knack for good design.....how about a Supernova faceplate.....that was one awesome looking synth.

Could we have a manual, or failing that a video tutorial, on using Components with the BSII? The help information provided basically just lists what each button is for without any further explanation, and they don't all do what I'd expect them to do. I'm sure it makes perfect sense - to people who know how to use it already. I've used all sorts of sysex librarians and patch editors, but this one is a puzzle. Usually, someone bothered to write a decent manual. What's the basic workflow? Are we supposed to send the entire bank back to the BSII after making any change, or what? I'm mostly interested in the standalone Components but hopefully there isn't much difference.
Sorry to hear that the tutorial content isn't providing you with the answers that you're looking for, thanks for your feedback on this. Essentially, Components can be used to create and store Banks of Patches for Bass Station II. When you create a new Bank, the 'Replace' button can be used to access the existing Novation Patches available on Components and Patches that you have created and saved to Components, from the 'User' tab. Using Components you can save Banks locally to your computer and to the Cloud, for access anywhere, from any computer. These Banks can be edited; Patches can be renamed and organised using Components and will need to send the finished Bank to your Bass Station II using the 'Send Bank/ Send Bank to Bass Station II" button before you can access them on your hardware. We will look into creating a video or documentation that explains this further.
Thanks. I'd vote for a manual, but a video would probably still help. Maybe with some index links in the description. I've looked at the Help and Tutorial again, and I don't see anything about needing to send the entire bank back, but I do see something that appears to say the opposite: "All patches can be sent to and received from your Bass Station II individually". I guess that is true, strictly speaking, but it gives a false impression of how we're meant to use it. I'd particularly like to have seen more about how to reorganise and rename patches, and be talked through using each of the buttons that relate to a patch. I'd assumed Send might just send it back to the same slot, for example, but instead it asked a question I didn't feel confident I could answer. Some hover help text on the buttons would be useful too. Terms like "Send", "Replace" and "Edit" could all use a few words of explanation. People might go a long time between using Components, and forget what they meant.
Anyone else having problems updating to the latest firmware? Chrome can see my BS2 but when I try to update the firmware the BS2 enters BTL mode and I get the following error in chrome "Error Something went wrong when starting the firmware update. Please check the connection and try again." I can only get the BS2 to connect again if I power cycle the BS2 and restart chrome. Trying the update again and it failed. I have disabled all my my extensions to rule those out as the cause. I'm connected directly to my computer via usb no hub. Update: Finally got it to update after using another PC and getting a timeout error. After one of the failures I left the BS2 in BTL dismissed the error and tried again while it was still in BTL mode. The update then went through.
I was not able to do the update through Chrome. Installed Opera and it worked without any problems. It seems like you have to make some changes to the midisettings in Chrome if you want to use that browser.
In portions of this video where we explain the transformative features that we've added to this synth, for free, you're hearing both. Bass Station II does not feature a reverb.
".. value from 0:7 where 0 is no error, and 7 represents an error of maximum approximately 1 semitone. " (i.e. half step, for Americans) - that's way too much. We want a subtle detune, not a synth that automatically plays the wrong notes!
Dear Novation, in case you're reading this. I've just discovered this video because i thought an osc drift would be nice and googled about it; and you have that miraculous habit of reading our minds and putting out firmwares before we realise we need them. So i still need to figure out how to firmware update, and then check that Error feature myself yet. BUT. Judging by this video, this artificial error is wa-a-ay too far off. A pair of descently detuned oscillators in a unison patch sit 8 to 12 cents apart (up to 20 if you're into dark DnB, but i said 'descent'). A drift is normally something a lot more subtle than fine tuning, usually fractions of a cent. So if you're considering to make another firmware update for the BS2, please reduce that error magnitude. Asking that, i assume, it's just a matter of programming; that hardware allows precise control over what comes up as the red digits. In case i'm right, can i please ask you to do the same to the LFO1 and Envelope Mod knobs for the oscillators? I love those knobs, but only the first 2 or 3 values either direction are useful, beyound that the modulation just blows out of proportion. Please make them react exponentially to knob input, or if just reduce the range several times, so that one knob value change would make less change in sound. Thank you.
@@NovationTV Dear Novation, How are guys holding up over there? Hope you use that sittingathome to your benefit, like i do, and after it's over we won't think of it as anything more than a temporary obstruction. I'd like to update on my comment above. The oscillator error is fine. E1 turned out to be perfect for me and i find myself even using E2 sometimes. LFO 1 knob is also ok. Well, if you cut that magnitude in half, i think everyone would benefit; but i could live with how it is. Now the Modulation Envelope knob - it's completely unusable. As in, when moving to value 1 (out of 63) it's already pushing that pitch way outside any melodic neighborhood. I understand, different musicians have different perspective on beauty than me, but who in their sane mind would possibly need to bash across their oscillator so heavy like it does with 63?? I tried doing drum sounds, and i didn't come above 20. (With 25 i got that splashy sound you get in some goa trance, and it's hardly usable anywhere else). So back to my request. If you're considering another firmware, please cut down that Mod Env knob AT LEAST ten fold. You'll uncover an entire layer of expressiveness by that. Thank you.
Oh man. I really should have gotten a BS2 instead of a Microbrute. At the time though, I didn't know Novation was so good about listening to its customers.

Chrome can see my BS2 but when I try to update the firmware the BS2 enters BTL mode and I get the following error in chrome "Error
Something went wrong when starting the firmware update.
I had problems with last update, tried for 6 times, and 7th it worked.
I was not able to do the update through Chrome. Installed Opera and it worked without any problems. It seems like you have to make some changes to the midisettings in Chrome if you want to use that browser.
It doesn't work for me too.
Should i do something when the screen change at the start of the updating process ?
Mine worked after 10th try!!!
Are we hearing the Bass Station II or the Strymon Big Sky ?
In portions of this video where we explain the transformative features that we've added to this synth, for free, you're hearing both. Bass Station II does not feature a reverb.
Nice, but ...the Bass Station II Librarian software & firmware updater 1.1 still updates to the old firmware... ;-) How to install the new one?
You can update to v2.5 using our Components content manager here: components.novationmusic.com
@@NovationTV Ah ok! I did'n know its existence. It worked, Paraphony is really great, it's like having another synth now. Thank you.
@@massimomagrini4452 Sorry you had problems finding this, Massimo. It's great to hear that you've now updated and are enjoying the new features.
I really think the osc error function should be able to be more subtle that is
SOoooo COOOL !!!!!!!
Sequencer step lenght would be great also..
Somehow the camera is weird. But looks like a nice synth!
Thumbs up Indiana USA.
Now to correct those Ultranova anoynces....
Please bring microtuning to the Peak!
NICE....
No! 🙀 I don’t want to come across as ‘Mr Complainypants’ but the oscillator error seemed too extreme when you were at the ‘first’ level Setting!
".. value from 0:7 where 0 is no error, and 7 represents an error of maximum approximately 1 semitone. " (i.e. half step, for Americans)
- that's way too much.
Thank you.
Interesting idea. Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback with us.
@@NovationTV Dear Novation,
How are guys holding up over there?
Thank you.
fw update for peak, pls
A station update?...???
Oh man. I really should have gotten a BS2 instead of a Microbrute. At the time though, I didn't know Novation was so good about listening to its customers.
However, I plan on getting a Peak as soon as I can afford one. I find myself needing one in literally every song I make. Or, really, two or three of them. If there was a multi-timbral Peak, I'd be all over that.
