Novation gave every BS2 owner a huge gift with this update. It's been one of my favorite synths for a long time but now I love it just that much more.
I've never played one but I think the bass station 2 might be a perfect easy to dive in synth with a lot of power in it. Still on my wishlist...
Great demo of paraphonic mode! I added the 2.5 update, but didn't get to use it before lending my BS2 to a friend. I just got it back, and plan to slap on the 4.14 update before getting into the weeds. You are so right about the updates making this feel like a new synth; I actually bought it again after selling my first BS2, and I copped it after that update and the Omnisphere hardware integration at about the same time. I"m planning to have more fun with this, and hope you are too. Thanks!
Thanks, Bo, for showing us some examples of how to use the paraphonic mode along with envelope retriggering. Very cool. Your "Top Three Synths" video of two years ago had already put the BS2 on my wish list. The release of this firmware update from Novation prompted me to go ahead and purchase this synth just yesterday. It's on its way, and I can hardly wait. This will be a lot of fun to explore. Thanks again for all you do.

You can still get a used BS2 for about $325 - $350. The used price has spiked noticeably since this firmware update came out, but it should settle down to $300 or even slightly less after several months and after one or two new (and much more expensive) cool monosynths come on the market. That is inevitable, I think.
The Microbrute is lots of fun, pretty versatile, and small, but digital controls would be really useful. The inability to load and save patches is a huge drawback. So I mostly just use it for dirty basslines where the fine-tuning and repeatability don't matter.
Moving forward, I'll probably just save up for a Peak and/or an Analog Four. I want several voices in a compact system, and I don't really want another set of keys. If there was a multi-timbral Peak, I'd be all over that.
Yeah there was a time when they could be had easily for $250. I passed on one in favor of a microbrute as well. Love the micro, but do wish I had the bass station II instead!

Amazing, 5yr old synth, some other manufacturers wouldn't even maintain a support page for a product that old. This is really how it should be, thanks Bo for a great video :) How does the paraphonic work off a sequencer?

Well this puts it above the korg monologue and it already had more capabilities than the minibrute w/ patch memory. But my Minibrute is the flavor I crave for mono analog. Pretty sweet though.

hey BO! Im having some Midi configuration issues with my Moog Subfatty but love the depth of its sound and the lack of menu diving. But after inconsistency and lots of frustrations im thinking about a replacement. If i went from sub phatty to bass station would i be unhappy with the thickness and sound quality of the bass station 2?

one of my favorite industrial bands KMFDM uses the Novation Bass Station 2 as their main synth so I know that it hits super hard. But I just picked up a new Analogue Solutions Leipzig V3 that hits hard.
Two-voice paraphonic is what I'd call it, and your big wide patch, did you use a chorusy reverb, cause it sounds like multiple unison detuned oscs? Great sound, would be even more epic across more than just the two octaves of the bs2 keys.. Yeah, more bs2 vids please, youtube needs more bs! 😉😊

I'm pretty new to all this with synths and I've only been self teaching myself for a couple of years, so I'm no expert at all.
But I have a Arturia Minibrute SE which I think is cool, but it feels like it's lacking a lot of stuff. Would you say it's worth getting rid of that in favor for a Novation Bass Station 2?

Can you explain the gear you are using? HOF Reverb, Time Maker and the Analog drive..what is the benefit of using those alongside the synthesizer?

Have you had any problems with the keyboard of the Bass Station 2? Like stuck notes or notes not registering.
It seems like a cool and somewhat backpackable synth without major compromises, but I'm a bit worried about build quality.
No issues with the keyboard but it has not seen heavy use
i bought mine used at Guitar Center and after a few months the high C isn't so responsive. I have to hit it pretty hard to get it to sound.
I've had two of them and they've both been great - no issues. They make an awesome gig bag for it too.
Sounds like you have a key contact issue. Probably an easy fix. A bit of dust or something might've gotten in there.
I just got a roland aira mini J-6 for it's arppeggiator, i'd love to hear the bass station 2 being controlled by the j-6. how simple is this?

1. Connect the BS2 to the computer. Turn it on. USB powered mode works.
2. Go to Components website. components.novationmusic.com/
3. Log in
4. Choose BS2 in the list of products in the top
5. Make sure it says its connected otherwise press "CONNECT" on the page
6. Go to FIRMWARE
7. Update
Should take a second or two!

Looking this and the Moog Little Phatty to use in a Doom Metal project I'm joining, I have a wall of 5U and Eurorack, but I really just want to have a small setup for when gigs start back up after this pandemic is over.

so i am a bit confused..when i press function and double d, nothing else happens then like touching d one time. it just stops at choice between on and off. do i also have to download any update or should it be on it?
paraphonic means that the oscillators share the same envelopes. Duo(poly)phonic synths have envelopes dedicated to each oscillator, or set of oscillators. You'll notice this if you have a slow attack, when you play the second note it won't fade in by itself.
Duophonic doesn’t necessarily mean individual envelopes tho. Marc Doty has a good post on this on FB. I think the Sub is called duophonic but its still paraphonic, but I might misremember
@@BoBeats Not to be a pain, but true duophony is exactly like other polyphonic synths except only two voices. If each voice (be it one or groups of oscillators) doesn't have it's own envelopes and filters and all it's doing is tuning each oscillator independently -- it's paraphonic.

Totally agree almost a new synth. Yesterday the update performed. I have already made 10+ interesting sounds that I did not get out of that before. I especially like the envelope option, the osc error for that bit of vintage osc drift is cool.
And finally the much requested filter option.
Yeah Bo! More of this sort of thing.... You mentioned a while ago about the SE02. What happened? would love to hear what you have to say about this machine. It's on my wish list along with the Behringer Model D...but which one? I have an SH01A in the boutique format and it's small but manageable. How is the SE02 with it's small knobs? Also...let's have more modular stuff...how does it all work together and so on... Sorry for the nag. I'm a Patron and therefore entitled to nag! Keep up the good work...still love you!

Not sure this will get answered, but if I'm looking for my first synth and I want a capable mono, is this a good choice? (I know it's paraphonic now, but it's still quite good as a mono) I've heard that it's better than the Monologue, but I'm wondering if there are better mono synths out there for under $400.
So which are the other monosynths you refer to that are on this price range that the BSII is challenging with this update?
I miss my BS2, first analog synth I bought a few years back. I now have a Sub37, Grandmother, Peak, and Polysix. I may pick one up used after this update.

Hmmm... it isn't working. Everything appears to update correctly, but the new update seems to not actually get installed. I can't activate the paraphonic setting. Anyone else struggling?
Ok, I got it. Novation has a second website separate from the components one that basically doesn't work. This update is pretty damn cool.

Yeah do more videos on Bass Station 2.. You have a ton on Minilogue which is a great synth with terrible keys (the worst). In fact, I just sold my XD with keys, got the XD module and control it with my BS2 keys.
I really think this might be my next purchase. Especially since there was a firmware update.
