I remember Zac doing Hairspray to prove he could sing because he was having to fight to be allowed to sing his own songs in Highs School Musical 2 and when he did this and it was obviously successful, they allowed it.
Hairspray and hsm 2 were both released in 2007! Zac worked his ass off for those movies
@@Delaney.N I am aware. But he's said it before that he had to fight to sing in the second movie because at first they just wanted to keep his vocals as Drew Sealy. I'm not saying he didn't work hard, but he auditioned and worked hard on Hairspray to prove his voice was good enough for him to have a lead that didn't need dubbed over by another singer.
I had no clue this situation happened! I’m glad he was finally able to prove himself!
I thought Zac said he didn't sing in the first HSM because he was shy or something. Maybe my memory isn't working or something but I somehow remember something along those lines.
@aznmochibunny they had all of the songs recorded with Drew Sealy and Disney didn't want to spend anymore budget re-recording the songs.
As kids we were lusting after Zac but as adults we realize James is the real heartthrob of the movie
To be fair, in this they both have blue eyes and black hair and are extremely handsome hahaha they are like the same person at different ages. I STILL have a crush on both of them to this day though 🤣
Tbf seaweed and James were it for me as a young kid lmao
Zac did get WAAAAY better with age.
@@CallMeKes lol you're being sarcastic right?
Excuse me, I've always been on Team Marsden since he walked into my life as Fox's X-men Cyclops in full leather
I love that the cast nicknamed "You Can't Stop the Beat" "You Can't Stop to Breathe". Totally fitting.
The latter title is so accurate! Lol!
I actually really love Travolta in Hairspray. He does an amazing job as Edna and really wasn't afraid to act (and sing) his heart out. One of my favourite performances in the movie for sure.
John Travolta and Christopher Walken were so great together!!
As a fat woman, THANK YOU for saying that! I did performing arts at college but I was always cast as either the ‘mother character’ or a man. Very disheartening, it actually killed my love for theatre because I never got a role that I was excited about. I don’t do theatre anymore but I love to sing and I’m hoping that with modern musicals, we’ll get more fat characters (who’s story doesn’t revolve around being fat or hating themselves because of it!)
I was SO mad in high school because my choir teacher cast a skinny girl who was frequently flat-toned, to boot, and put her in a fat suit to play Tracey. I was almost always in the ensemble or a non speaking role. I hated it.
This! I played the sheriff in the crucible and background characters in every other production. I was a good enough singer to be part of auditioned choirs and a 9 woman group. I was never good enough for even a singing supporting role in the eyes of directors. I think me being fat really was the reason. Always the same skinny girls got the leads. It really made me doubt my ability. I can't believe I didn't see that if I wasn't a good singer or at theatre in general, why was I tasked multiple times to help others learn their lines and songs? Fatphobia sucks.
@@katielouwho888 same with me, I got solos in choir. I just never got roles in theater. I would have liked to have played in Wicked, as either Elphaba or Glenda, but the same girl got one of those. I don't remember who got the other. She got Annie. I think we did Cinderella and she got the title role there.
But in choir I was the (same) teacher's clincher, because I had an ear for music and usually learned both the soprano and the alto part, and if the altos were struggling for a line or a verse, I'd drop down to help them before returning to the soprano part. I generally stood in between the two sections so I'd blend either way.
we don't want to put unhealthiness on a pedestal though, even though we want to encourage people to like whatever they look like. You can always make someone look bigger if needed. Thing is most younger characters dance and dance is more aesthetic with an athlete and dancers are generally athletic because they dance.
@@MsJubjubbird okay, but that has nothing to do with a high school level play where there's already a fat kid available, and *also* where the character is written as being fat. I was able, if not so willing, to dance around. And I was fat because of a health issue, not because... well not entirely because I couldn't keep out of the snack food.
"Run and Tell That" in this movie ALWAYS makes me tear up. The vocal performances are actually insane!
Omg I thought it was just me 💀
SAME. Elijah Kelley's voice gives me chills every time
The way Queen Latifah sings, “They say that white has mite and thin is in, well that’s just bull / ‘Cause ladies, big is back, and as for Black, it’s beautiful” always gives me chills. That line is so empowering.
That line, "Life's a 45 when you can't buy it" is a reference to smaller records they recorded singles on. They were called 45s because you had to play it at a different speed than albums, at 45 RPM. Occasionally, record companies might release a single only to radio stations, but it wasn't available in stores. So you might hear a song you like on the radio and be disappointed to find you can't find it anywhere (except maybe on the full length album).
Thank you for explaining for those who don’t know!! My dad has some 45s and they’re so cool to look at and listen to.
This is what I came to say. Glad someone had.
"you can't stop the beat" is lovingly nicknamed "you can't stop to breathe" by singers and instrumentalists alike. ❤
I believe queen latifa was the only one who didn't say anything because she's from a rap background
I love that little factoid!
I think this was an actual line in the Broadway show from Edna when she did her verse toward the end of the song. ‘You can’t stop to breath…Wilber be a dear, fetch some oxygen…NOOOW!!’ Then motormouth sings her verse. Listen to the Broadway version of it haha.
yeah it's freaking insane to try to actually perform.
Fun fact I learned in middle school: Pennys final dress wasnt made for her to dance, the costume team didnt know she was suppose to dance in those final scenes and they didnt have time to make her a new one, so the actress just had to do the best that she could.
"The actress" aka Amanda Bynes....
The actress… lmao
That's actually crazy! I mean you'd surely assume she was going to dance in some form if she was in the final musical number. Poor Amanda
Not seeing enough love for Little Inez in this comment section, and that's a tragedy!! She’s got one of the best voices (which like, is saying something in this cast! Nikki Blonsky, Elijah Kelley, bwah) in this whole cast! I honestly think this adaptation is one of the best cast musicals... like ever.
Elijah Kelley not Wood 😂 Elijah Wood was Frodo. But it’s fun to imagine him in this movie.
Fun fact: Inez is played by songer-songwriter Taylor Parx. She wrote for artists like Panoc! At The Disco.
“The spirit was there…but, the key was not” the single best critique I’ve ever heard in all my years of voice study.
You know the singing is good when Hannah gives a whole life summary of why she’s a vocal coach
I agree with you about Tracy running from the police. In the stage musical, Tracy goes to jail with everyone and Link comes to help get her out. I'm not a fan of the filmmakers deciding to make her run, because it's out of character and makes her seem more selfish. Aside from that misstep, this is one of my favorite films of all time.
Agreed! And I think it’s a shame that we missed out on The Big Dollhouse, Tracy’s verse in Without Love and the Good Morning Baltimore reprise, which I think is such a sweet song that shows how she’s grown as a person through the show
I like the choice in the movie to have Edna step in to protect her daughter. It's quick but it's there. She tells Tracy to run and then links arms with Maybelle so Tracy can escape. It's sweet.
yup, i'm glad they kept it like in the stage version for the live adaptation
i think the director did this because it would be way less realistic in a movie to have link sneak into an adult prison and break tracey out. in a musical it is a cute little duet and in a movie i’d just be weird
@@ninabickell5776 There's a director's commentary on the DVD and the director says that exact thing they couldn't figure out a realistic way to do it and it would add too much time to the movie.
Fun fact: the actors for both the Broadway show and the movie started calling the finale “you can’t stop to breathe” because it’s so difficult to get through
Elijah Kelly/Seaweed was so amazing in this movie. I used to be so obsessed with Run and Tell That. And James Marsden has always been the heartthrob of the movie for me.
I’ve loved Elijah Kelly’s (plays Seaweed) voice since I first heard him sing in the New Edition film back in 2017. Every now and then I’ll still look up the clips of the main cast singing while doing promos for it. His voice is crazy good.
Omg it's like butter I love his voice
1000% he has such stunning vocals.
He recently did Oz with Queen Latifah so a nice reunion for them!
As someone who has been a lead in this show saying the finale is a marathon is an understatement 😅 those double show days were like a full week at the gym 😂
Can confirm. I've played Tracy a few years ago, and the finale number nearly killed us all! ;P
“You can’t stop to breathe” is a joke I’ve heard people say about this song 😂
Played Link in high school... SO MUCH EXERCISE
@@PrincessMeggala0913😂😂😂😂
THE ACCURACY!! that became our group hashtag lmao @@PrincessMeggala0913
the actress that plays seaweed’s little sister is tayla parx! she’s a songwriter and has written many many recent hits for artists like ariana grande (they’re like best friends), charli xcx, little mix, fifth harmony, dua lipa, troye sivan, kendrick lamar, meghan trainor, etc., she’s extremely talented.
This version of Hairspray is one of my all-time favorite musicals. Also, I am so in love with James Marsden and I will never understand how he has not been in more musicals. I’m gonna need that to change.
I think Tracy making the big jump to feeling hurt after link said it was too big for him was a result of her mom’s constant statements on her weight. And I always loved that her mom was there to see what the effects of what her constant talk of her and her daughters size did to Tracy. After that point she changes her behavior and becomes more overtly supportive of her daughter and becomes her main encouragement later on. It’s always felt so healing! 🥰
She's also upset because earlier in the scene Link said "I think knowin' you's the start of a pretty big adventure.", so since he said that in reference to Tracy not long before Edna showed up, she assumed "I just think this adventure's... a little... too big for me.", was about her cause it's a lot of the same wording.
Listen listen I had a crush on most men in this musical, but seaweed takes the cake😭💕🌷
I LOVE Queen Latifah. She has such amazing heartfelt soul in her voice. Whether it's "Big, Blonde And Beautiful", "I Know Where I've Been" or her solo in "You Can't Stop The Beat". Her voice? 👌😘
I watched her again in Chicago last night. Love her rack in "when you're good to momma"
I really loved her in chicago 2002
Her performance in Big, Blonde, and Beautiful was the song that made me feel like I could be confident and sexy and beautiful even though I’m a little bigger. Now whenever I start hating my body I put this song on repeat until those thoughts go away. And with the catchy beat it doesn’t take too long!
@@ashleighmodglin It's an amazing number, for sure
She also has a terrific Grammy-nominated album of jazz and R&B songs called The Dana Owens Album (2004).
Elijah is just incredible. I adore this film and basically all of the musical numbers but 'run and tell that' is just eugh.. amazing. 'I know where I've been' will never not make me cry 😭 Hairspray is everything. "I'm tryna IERN here"
Thank you for the fat lead rant! When I played Tracy in college I remember feeling like I was too fat or not the right “kind” of fat to be a good enough Tracy. I’ve always felt like I could never have a part because of it. There are truly just not roles made for us. Thanks for the support love❤
love that you mentioned how fucked up the casting for this musical can be. There are very little NICE roles let alone lead roles for us to play. It can be so frustrating lol
The shift from thirsting over Zac Efron as a teenager to James Marsden as an adult is so real. 😂
If you haven’t seen it yet, Star Trek actually just did their first musical episode! Definitely worth checking out
I was just thinking she should react to the Star Trek musical episode too!
omg yes!
so real
I would love to see her react to that episode!!!!
“Life’s a 45 when you can’t buy it”-45 may refer to a 45in vinyl record perhaps? And you skipped over “come so far, so long to go” in the credits. That’s a bop. I love this movie and cannot get enough of it. One of the best soundtracks ever!
I am a competitive dancer and when I was younger, by request, I did a solo to you can’t stop the beat! You typically don’t get to pick your solo song, but that year my solo choreographer asked me if I had any song requests. Me being a theater kid and a huge fan of hairspray, I requested to do you can’t stop the beat! I just remember her not understanding what it meant when she said “tomorrow is a brand new day where you don’t know white from black”. Me being like 8 or 9 years old, I had to explain to a full grown woman that the song/musical takes place in the 60s during segregation and that the whole plot of the musical is about ending segregation!
Michelle Pfeiffer doesn't get enough credit for this role. She inhabited that character, right down to the walk.
she was FABULOUS in hairspray
honestly, i truly believe this is one of the best roles john travolta ever played. i mean, his performance in this movie is just so REAL! i've seen a lot of other movies that he's in, and this is the one where his acting feels the most grounded and emotional -- which is ironic, considering it's definitely the character that's the most different from who he is in real life.
I remember he said when he was asked he wouldn't perform it campy, he wanted Edna to be beautiful, which honestly I find so respectful, and he absolutely gave his one hundred percent. That dance number at the end, and his kindness and sadness in the movie really was quite good.
@@harvestmoon_autumnsky i totally feel that. welcome to the sixties - and the following confrontation with the evil mom - ALWAYS MAKE ME CRY!! you can just see the utter joy turn to devastation in the blink of an eye. just a genuinely heartfelt performance 😭
I love John Travolta, nobody moves like this man.
Especially in You Can’t Stop the Beat it, but in the whole move he just seems like he’s having so much fun with the roll in general it makes it that much better.
From what I heard he really enjoyed playing Edna and liked the way her character was portrayed. You can tell he worked hard in this movie
So my high school did this (this would have been 2010) and BOY oh boy were there some choices made. Similar to what you said, our Tracy was the skinny popular girl in school that we had to pad to look bigger. The girl who auditioned to play Tracy and actually looked and sounded the part (the best voice of the entire drama club while also less traditional lead looking) ended up getting Edna and she ABSOLUTELY rocked it. But worsttt of all, our school had about
That sounds kinda rough- my high school is doing this (second time, hairspray is a repeat) and auditions are on Monday, apparently the school’s first show was a huge success so I have a lot to live up to 😅
Oof😳 That ain’t good haha
The song "i know where i've been" its so perfect!!! The glee version is also great
The "I risked communicable diseases, she'll certainly risk incarceration" part cracks me up every time too. And Corny is awesome.
I hope James Marsden does another movie musical soon. He hasn't done broadway & that's crazy.
i would kill to see him as dan in a next to normal movie
That riff he does is so smooth for no reason
fun fact Tayla Parx (Little Inez) is a fantastic solo artist now who has also gotten a few Grammy nominations for her songwriting contributions... her songs Dance Alone and Flowers are amazing in particular
also The Big Dollhouse is one of my favorite numbers in the musical so I was always disappointed they changed it so Tracy ran away rather than everyone going to jail together, missed opportunity for chaos and group harmonies imo
as for suggestions on what to watch next, Theater Camp just came out on streaming! I also highly recommend Sing Street
It's so interesting seeing the changes that were made in the movie compared to the musical. In the musical Tracy doesn't run away at the protest and actually gets arrested. During "Without Love" Link comes and helps her break out
What a year for James Marsden, both "Hairspray" and "Enchanted" in 2007. He does look like a real-life Prince Charming, doesn't he?
Edit: Yupp, Queen Latifah singing "I know where I've been" still gives me chills. So good.
Me too
Me too
I would DEFINITELY love to see Hannah do reactions to the live performances of movie musicals. Such as the ones done for Grease, Hairspray, Rent, and The Wiz.
I second that!
Definitely would love to see Chicago as well!
Yesss please do a string of musicals. Chicago the musical is my fav musical movie (I actually like it better than the stage production), but there's so much you could do! In the Heights, Singing in the Rain, the new Matilda adaption, West Side Story, and Sweeny Todd. Lol. I just love musicals. Great video!! It is fun to see Zac's journey with singing and I LOVE they found Nikki for Tracy. She's still so so proud of this role.
i LOVE nikki blonsky. she deserved better. her voice is so good and her energy/dancing was PERFECT!!
As her agent it would have been difficult to advise what to do next in terms of finding her a role and her health issues. She could have hit the gym, hired a dietician and dropped the kilos quick, and she might have got ahead, but then she's be competing against the other singing teen actresses of the time- Anne Hathaway comes to mind. But then on the flipside, if the kept the weight the main roles are comedic ones, and she is not a comedic actress. Plus is it eithcal to tell a 16 year old she has to not watch her weight.
I will say - as a fat positive ED therapist - I've always had a lot of empathy for Tracy's mom in hairspray. It's not that her decision to discourage Tracy is ok, but I always could see that she genuinely wanted to protect her daughter, and this was the only way she knew how. A lot of my clients "inherited" their EDs from their moms who who were in larger bodies, and we talk a lot about holding space for empathy/compassion AND accountability at the same time.
THIS THIS THIS THIS!!!!
Yeah. I adored when Tracy inspired her mother to get on stage in the end
This made me tear up.
I always cry when I hear Queen Latifah singing "I Know Where I've Been." Every. Time. You can just hear the passion and sadness in her voice and its just beautiful.
Oh my God I always get chills watching the march scene, it's just incredible. The whole movie is and the ending brings me absolute joy. Thank you for this reaction. 💖💖💖
Run and Tell That was by far my favourite of the whole movie. I still listen to it
There’s a Hairspray Live! With Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Dove Cameron, Martin Short, Kristen Chenoweth. But it got mixed reviews when it aired so it’s a hit or miss. Dove and Kristen sounded amazing as always. Also, there’s Grease Live with Vanessa Hudgens, Keke Palmer, Carlos PenaVega (from Big Time Rush), Carly Rae Jepsen, Julianne Hough, I thought it was actually amazing and everything was live. Vanessa Hudgens played Rizzo and her rendition of There Are Worst Things was just flawless (fun and also sad fact, her dad passed away that same day and she still did the show)
YES boosting this so she sees! Need both of these!!!
yesss i love dove !
Yeah I wasn't the biggest fan of the Hairspray with Ariana Grande. She tans so much (her natural skin tone is very pale and people have argued that she's blackfishing, although she seems to have moved onto Asia-fishing recently) that having her play Penny makes no sense. You have all these moments between Penny and Seaweed talking about them being an interracial couple and yet she doesn't look white because of how much she tanned back then. When I watched it I legit thought she wasn't white so I was confused, so I looked it up and saw what her natural skin tone is.
@@Marzi29I see your point, but I’m a black person and I never thought Ariana was doing anything wrong, she’s half Italian which means she can get quite tan and lighting can also make a person look darker, so there are many pictures of her where she looks darker but the light was just awful and made it seem that way when in reality she wasn’t that dark. It never bothered me in any way. And I haven’t heard anything about her trying to look Asian or anything like that so I can’t comment. But the problems I had with Hairspray Live were minor, I didn’t like that they cut You Can’t Stop The Beat short, it was half the original size of the song, but they did the full song on a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade which also annoyed me cause it should’ve been on the show and not on a parade. And they also didn’t do The New Girl In Town in favor of doing Cooties which I thought was a weird choice. But I loved everyone’s acting and their voices were amazing, albeit they had some technical issues with the lighting.
@@biasampaio5899 Literally Ariana’s recent appearance makes her look Asian. And then awhile ago she was tanning entirely too dark for her natural shade and using a blaccent. Comparing now Ariana to pre 2013 Ariana, her features are completely different
Hairspray was just too good, and think this was the movie that made me fall in love with Zac Efron
so true! the crush started in HSM but Hairspray is where we all fell in love
@@avajanzen5877 yessss
Hairspray is the only movie I've ever been into Zac Efron
@@kiraalldredge48 what about 17 again??
@@avajanzen5877 I actually can't stand that movie.
I love this movie. The cast, the soundtrack, the editing, and wardrobe are all just amazing!!!
In the NBC live version they apparently called "You Can't Stop The Beat" something like "You Can't Take A Breath" or "Stop to Breathe" or something. You can hear them running out of breath during the number cause it just keeps going and is filled with dance. But it's sooooooooooo good.
Also, Tracy is always cast through open calls because through Hairspray history, an overweight teenage movie star didn't exist. It's really sad that the role is sometimes taken from them.
Size 18 here- thank you for your comment about fat people not being fat because they can't stop eating.
I have Atypical-Anorexia (only atypical because I'm not underweight), Orthorexia, and Exercise Addiction- and I'm still fat and feel guilty every day of my life for eating anything, even coffee with a splash of cream is considered food to me and was highly avoided and restricted. I'm in recovery now, but food/eating guilt is still an everyday factor. Stereotypes and fat shame are absolute evil hellish garbage.
I was on the edge of my seat anticipating your reaction to the Seaweed/Little Inez number. Her solo part in that song has always been my favorite moment in the whole movie!
Ya I was like "she best not skip Inez's part in that song!"
That's my favorite part too!!
And the line 'tryin to make a dollar out of 15 cents' is still so true today!
Hannah you should react to Dreamgirls next! It stars Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy, and Anika Noni Rose! It's definitely one of my favorite musicals EVER and I think you would really enjoy it. All of the songs are so addictive and the vocals are extraordinary! Thanks for another amazing reaction video. Much love!
Oooh Jennifer Hudsons vocals gives me chillllls I would love her to review it too!!!
speaking of Jennifer Hudson, her "I Know Where I've Been" in the Hairspray LIVE broadcast was !!!!!!!!!!
By far my favorite movie adaptation of a musical. This movie is pure joy with the absolute best cast.
This is one of my favorite movie musicals ever but also probably the only one I've seen where the songs they added specifically for the movie are amazing??? Both Ladies' Choice and Come So Far are not in the musical but they are absolute BOPS
Hairspray’s soundtrack always puts me in such a good mood. I’ve always thought this was one of the best musical movie adaptations.
An idea for another one to react to: Little Shop of Horrors.
I love this movie, I got the dvd when it came out and one of the behind the scenes mentions how all the singers except Queen Latifah had trouble with “You can’t stop the beat” because there’s nowhere to pause to breathe. When they asked her how come she had no trouble singing so fast without pause she was like “I’m a rapper” 😂. Oh btw, the “45 that you can’t buy” a 45 is a record.
I don't know if you ever watched this but there's a movie called the wiz, when I was younger I called it the black version of the wizard of oz, the wiz is so good, I grew up watching this show 24/7. I think you would love the songs in it
I love how you're speaking up for us "fat" girls. People are dumb to say people are fat just because of their food habits. I'm pleasantly plump not fat. Lol much love❤ and respect 😊
John Travolta CARRIED this movie, he just gave it his all, and i applaud the performance
I disagree I thought everyone carried themselves fr this cast was great. My jaw was on the floor during the blacker the berry song
Queen Latifah was SO much better than the scientolocultist.
@@Jackjumper_ant i agree but John Travolta and Christopher Walken ....they just added something so much to it.
@@Jackjumper_antYes!
Seeing other people flip over Elijah Kelley (Seaweed) is one of my favorite things. I saw this in theaters and immediately declared him the next big thing. Unfortunately, Hollywood still hasn't given him his due. But he's great in other projects like Red Tails, The Butler, The Wiz Live, and the New Edition Story.
The song at the end in the credits is amazing! It has all the original Tracy’s along with Nikki Blonsky. I believe it is from the Broadway version, but they didn’t put it in the movie. So good!!!
I was in Hairspray in high school and I can confirm You Can’t Stop the Beat was a marathon and I was only in the ensemble. Literally everyone was sick after our run.
I enjoyed this so much! I forgot how good a mood Hairspray puts me in!
Fyi, "a 45 when you can't buy it" refers to a 45rpm record, so she's basically saying your fave has a new single out and you aren't able to get a copy.
(Edit: someone in a later comment said this actually refers to a type of beer, which would make more sense with the not being able to buy it! I'm not American so I hadn't heard of the beer brand, but I did grow up listening to my mum's 45s 😌)
Ok that makes more sense, bc I always thought it was a gun. Like a .45 caliber and I was soooo confused! And also kinda side eyeing Penny bc GIRL why are you trying to buy a gun?! 👀
Thank you! I've always wondered what she was referring to!
Omg thank you! I've always wondered what that meant
@@52pickuplimes96 haha! To be fair, given Penny's upbringing, she might be unhinged enough to try!
I always thought the lyrics referred to a record, but the beer idea could work. Colt 45 malt liquor was brewed in South Baltimore starting in 1963.
I’ve become a recent fan of yours, Hannah. As a musical theater megafan, I’d really love to hear your reviews of Enchanted, Chicago, The Slipper and the Rose, 1776, Matilda (2022), and Moulin Rouge. They all have some great acting and some really awesome music.
Moulin rouge 100% I've never looked at Ewan the same since
YES TO MOULIN ROUGE
Yes to Ella enchanted!
PLEASE CHICAGO
Second all of these!
Hairspray is one of my absolute favorite musicals! It has such a great storyline, and the moral of the story is that people shouldn't base anything off of people's skin color and that you can be any color under the sun and be an asshole. The song "I know where I've been" always gives me chills and it's so emotional and I cry every time I hear it. It can really be based on anything discriminating and not just about race.
This movie is so iconic, I don’t feel a single person was miscast, such a good film
This movie did the ending so well because I absolutely hate that Traci wins when that's not really what the story is pushing for. Like Inez winning just makes so much sense
I love all of the cameos that they had in this film. In Welcome to the 60s, Ricki Lake (the original Tracy) and Marissa Jarrett Winokur ( the original Broadway Tracy) appeared along with Jerry Stiller ( the original Wilbur Turnblad) as Mr Winky. Also John Walters, who wrote and directed the original movie appeared in Good Morning Baltimore as the streaker.
If you’re still looking for more musical tv shows or movies to react to Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies has so many good songs and the cast are amazing singers!!
GIRL IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS THANK YOU SO MUCH NOTHING BUT LOVE BABE💕💕💕💕
28:37 as someone who has been on a production of Hairspray I can confirm that you can’t stop the beat is an absolute BEAST of a number and it definitely wipes you out like nobody’s business 😮💨
When I watched this as a single digit aged child, somehow, the entire point of this all flew over my head, all I was thinking was, “ohhh, pretty outfits and awesome songs” watching it again now, I am stunned by the actual story.
South Pacific is a musical that where the racism went over my head, but was so apparent when I watched it as an adult.
Yasss!! I was waiting for this one! Love this movie it’s so iconic and perfectly cast, plus I’m such a Zac girly too, major talented triple threat, heartthrob and charm for days! His singing voice is like butter then add his looks and natural charisma, he just shines and adds such an element and holds his own esp at that age and against these big time actors while he was still becoming established, can’t buy that!
Hannah!! Literally watching your channel has changed how I listen to voices! I've loved listening to fantastic singers before (obviously who doesn't?), but it truly is my favorite thing to seek out in music now. Knowing that difficulty and skill it takes to get there brings a whole new appreciation. So thank you for being our incredible voice teacher!!
LISTEN - That Corny Collins run? That's a KING right there! EVERY person I know that's heard it promptly fell for James, especially between this and Enchanted LOL 😍🤭
And this movie is so fun, definitely holds up as an adaptation.
Honestly your reaction to Run and Tell That is my reaction everytime - they are both SO talented and omg Seaweed’s voice is just so smooth and buttery!
This was the first musical I ever saw live and this movie holds such a special place in my heart, thanks for reacting❤
This is the most fun reaction I have ever watched you do!❤
Hairspray is more than likely the one musical where I will get goosebumps and get teary eyed just from listening to the soundtrack. You can't stop the beat is such a good song and it's always raised my mood.
Hairspray never fails to put me in a good mood 💃
The way that I was just thinking that you need to react to this like literally yesterday and I come over here and find this...hannah you're the freaking best
I absolutely love this movie, the original and this one absolutely love. I know them both by heart and I was so excited to see you finally reacted it!!!
I love Hannah even more from this video, the fact that she supports and talks about how being fat is not usually a choice, made me feel so valid ♥️
As someone who signed up for STAGE CREW for a high school rendition of the show, I will say the cardio is so hard 😂 They didn't know what to do with us for the first week so they made us sing and dance. I have never forgotten the two dances. We eventually put on a kick ass show though
As someone who has ALWAYS been fat/heavy (350+) THANK YOU for what you said about not wanting to hear people comment on being fat = eating a lot. Quite a few of us who are fat/heavy tend to be diagnosed with atypical anorexia (restrictive type), myself included, and eat but MAYBE once a day which is the cause of severe weight gain and inability to lose it. Happens a lot when you live below the poverty line and one meal a day is all you can really afford and then binging when you have that spare money to actually eat 3 meals in a day. It's a vicious cycle that is EXTREMELY difficult to break and why the typical "diet and exercise" don't really work, especially when your metabolism is destroyed due to the constant starvation mode we put our bodies in. I'm 32 years old and finally in a place financially where I can begin recovering from my own ED.
Hannah’s laugh is contagious ❤
THANK YOU! Hairspray is incredible and I absolutely swoon over James marsden especially when he sang “that’s me”. Perfection!
This is one of my top musicals. They do so well tackling heavy topics while making one of the most enjoyable soundtracks ever.
For Edna's obsession with weight, I agree every word is wrong, but I empathize that it is coming entirely from her own trauma. It makes me so happy to see her find healing throughout the story, but also to see that she found true love long ago. Wilbur loves her so purely it is beautiful.
I had my own growing up moment watching Buffy. I watched as a teen and was all about Xander and Angel (and Faith, but i didn't recognize it as a real crush back then), but i remember watching as an adult the first time Giles went from the father like teacher to... Daddy. I never felt older lol.
YES YES YES I have been WAITING for you to react to Hairspray!! It is one of my all time favorite musicals and my comfort movie
I love that you brought up being big isn't always because of food! I take medication that contributes to my weight gain. It's extremely frustrating.
Way back when, Kenny Ortega said Zac was a good singer during HSM auditions, but his voice was transitioning & he had trouble with the higher notes, so they brought Drew Seeley in to dub. But then Zac’s voice developed & was stronger for the later films ✨
I’ve never seen this. I’ve only seen the live version and it’s so good. It also has my favorite song “Mama, I’m a big girl now” and it helps connect Amber with the others to show that they are going through similar things. I don’t know why they took it out of this movie.
Pretty sure John and Zach are in that as well
The soundtrack for the movie does have Mama I’m A Big Girl Now but the three girls are instead voiced by Ricki Lake (Tracy in the original John Waters movie), Marissa Jaret Winokur (the original Broadway Tracy) and Nikki Blonsky(this movies Tracy)
I’ve watched videos about the making of Hairspray and they wanted to put the song in, but it would have meant splitting the screen into three segments and just would have been very awkward.
If my memory is correct, they had it playing during the credits. It was one of my favorite songs
This movie was my intro to musical theatre. This year, I finally saw it in theatre with none other than Michael Ball playing Edna. I can never decide who was the better Edna, but the movie cast overall is my favourite and have a special place in my Spotify lists
The end of this movie always makes me cry
Welcome to the 60s makes me tear up with joy. It's so lovely to see Edna's confidence grow alongside her daughter
Seaweed is played by the infamous Elijah Kelly, he’s great and such an amazing vocalist. Definitely doesn’t get the hype he deserves
I’m doing hairspray at my school rn so I’m super happy to see you reacting to this
finally been waiting for this one!!!!!
Ever since this movie came out I was enamored with James Marsden, even as a tween when this movie released. to this day he is still one of my favs
Definitely prefer the stage over the movie! You talking about Tracy running is a prime example! In the stage version, she gets arrested along with everyone else and that’s how act 1 ends. Not only does it fit her character and the story so far MUCH better… but we also get an insanely amazing opening act 2 tap number lol
I'm blanking on who it was but another voice instructor who reviewed this said that they could have casted better, literally said Queen Latifah wasnt the best choice despite being a big name. I'm glad you were so positive!
A 45 was a small record on which singles were released. The name comes from the revolutions per minute. 33 albums spin at 331/3 revolutions per minute and 45 singles at 45.
