You should react to the original 1988 film next. That's the one that started it all.The flasher is John Waters, who created and directed the 1988 film, which was shot in Baltimore. The movie musical was shot in Toronto Canada. John Travolta played a woman because it's tradition that a man plays the mom in the franchise. In the 1988 version, Divine, a famous drag queen, played the role (he died 2 weeks after the film premired) and in the 2002 broadway show, Harvey Firestein played the role. The setting in all the versions is 1962.
The original movie was made by John Waters (the flasher in the beginning) who cast Drag Queen Divine to be the mom. The mom has been played by a man in drag in every adaptation and stage production since.
Drag Queen Divine was the original cast for the mom in the original film adaptation, since then the role has been played by someone in drag to honour the directors decision.
@@evergreen9927 Ahhhhhh youre correct, my mistake. I had assumed that the original film was an adaptation cause that is the case for so many movies but thank you for the correction cause Waters deserves his flowers.
The original film had a drag queen playing Tracy's mom and when it was turned into a stage show (probably why it feels like one on film) they kept that tradition alive. Tracy's mom has always been played by a man ever since. This is how John Travolta ended up in drag for this remake.
My biggest pet peeve is people not reading the date on the newspaper in the beginning, it says May 1963 and people who reacted to this movie “when does this take place , 1950s?” Oy vey 😫 (just a personal rant it’s not anything against them it’s just a big pet peeve)😂
I remember having to dance to "Good Morning, Baltimore" and "You Can't Stop the Beat" from this movie. It was one of my favorite movies as a teen, too.
These guys are kinda dumbasses too. Don't know what a moomoo is, doesnt know what cinemascope is, doesn't know the lyrics but keeps trying t9 sing along...
Some fun facts/behind the scenes: The movie is based on the 2002 Broadway musical which was based on a movie from 1988. The musical is very popular but as for the movies, in this case the remake is generally considered better. Although the 1988 movie had a great cast like Ricki Lake, Divine, Debbie Harry (of Blondie), Sonny Bono (as in Sonny & Cher) and Jerry Stiller (Ben Stiller's dad). John Travolta's casting as Edna continued the tradition of having a man in drag portray the character, since the 1988 movie featured drag queen Divine as Edna and the Broadway version featured Harvey Fierstein as Edna. One day between takes John Travolta began singing Summer Nights from Grease to the cast. Steve Martin, Robin Williams and Tom Hanks were considered for the role. Also, sidenote: Divine was the inspiration for Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Nikki Blonsky (Tracy) was completely unknown and working in an ice cream shop when she auditioned for the role at 18. Aside from being in a few high school productions, she had no professional acting or singing background at the time, and beat out 1.100 candidates. Here is footage of her reaction to getting the part: ua-cam.com/video/ZcgNDozn9-I/v-deo.html She's been in a few movies and TV shows since then but nothing big, which is a shame. She was always typecasted as the 'fat girl' and Hollywood apparently didn't have any decent roles for her. Unfortunately and ironically, less than a year after the release of this movie, she and her parents were arrested for assault after attacking and throwing racial slurs at a black family at a Caribbean airport (one of whom was a contestant on America's Next Top Model, Bianca Golden). The charges were dropped 5 months later. Link's look is based on Elvis Presley. Zac Efron's big break was of course in High School Musical. However, he barely sang in the first one BUT he did sing in 2 and 3. Hairspray was released a month before HSM 2 so this was the first time people really heard him sing. Zac's voice has evolved so much and he's honestly a very underrated singer AND actor. Inez is based in part upon Ruby Bridges, the first black child to attend a formerly all-white school in the state of Louisiana. She is played by Tayla Parx, a singer/songwriter who has written and co-written songs for Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Demi Lovato and Justin Bieber, along with several songs with her friend Ariana Grande (including Thank You, Next). Last year, she starred as Donna Summer in Spinning Gold, a biographical drama based on the life of Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart. There were a few minor roles/cameos: Jerry Stiller (Wilbur in the 1988 movie) played Mr. Pinky in this one. Ricki Lake (Tracy in 1988 movie) and Adam Shankman (choreographer/director of this movie) both appear as talent agents. John Waters (writer/director of 1988 movie) appears as the flasher who lives next door. Ricki Lake also sang Mama I'm A Big Girl Now with Nikki Blonsky and Marissa Jaret Winokur (Broadway's Tracy) for the end credits. Harvey Fierstein (Broadway's Edna) had a brief singing cameo in the end credits for that too. Stephen "tWitch" Boss appears as a background dancer. There is a closeup of him in the final song after Inez wins and the show is officially integrated, with Amber watching. He was a DJ/guest host/producer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, as well as competing/appearing in So You Think You Can Dance and some of the Step Up movies. He tragically died by suicide in 2022 at the age of 40. Because of the fast paced lyrics of the songs, most of the cast jokingly called the last song You Can't Stop the Beat "You can't stop to breathe". Queen Latifah said she had no trouble with it because of her background as a rapper. Cool little thing not many people notice, and I don't know if it was done on purpose, but during Seaweed's song Run and Tell That, Tracy, Penny and Link (the white people) are at the back of the bus while Seaweed, Inez and the dancers are at the front (the poc). Penny's dress in the final song was made from the curtains in her room (an homage to The Sound of Music). Also, Amanda Bynes' father, who is a dentist, became very worried for her dental health, as it was estimated she ate about 40 lollipops a day. She told him that she wasn't really eating all of them, when in reality she ate them all. She is literally Willy Wonka. According to the DVD commentary, director Adam Shankman made Zac Efron make out with the picture frame for "hour after hour after hour". Lastly, there is a deleted song/scene called "I Can Wait", sung by Tracy. It's actually a shame because it shows a different side to her voice, more soft and gentle: ua-cam.com/video/8MNxrzvG96I/v-deo.html There is also another song sung by Link called "It Takes Two". He only sings the ending when they're announcing the auditions (and it's on the soundtrack): ua-cam.com/video/8BJ8sAV5Aj49/v-deo.html8
When my high school did this Maybelle was a drag role as well and absolutely killed it, “I know where I’ve been” got a standing ovation every night. It was our senior year show, great way to go out.
I died at the “(we had no idea this was about racism)” cus neither did I and it was my favorite as a child 🤦♀️😭 Obviously once I grew up I figured it out as a teen
The beginning of the movie shows a newspaper with the date "May 3, 1962". Tracy's mother also says in Welcome to the 60s, "I haven't left this house since 1951", so that's eleven years she's stayed in her house. It's like Tracy says "People who are different - their time is coming!" It hasn't come yet - it's still at the start of the decade.
This is such a feel good musical. It’s sad that between when this took place and now not a whole lot has changed concerning racism. Still the final number does give me hope that things will change. Also I love seeing people going into this blind and realizing this is about racism.
"This is in Baltimore?!?!" "That's why it's so ugly!!" 😂😂 Just letting you know this is the moment I subscribed, fist time here 😂👋🏻 you should watch the original Hairspray. John Waters sets all of his movies in Baltimore.
Yes, it was about racism, but it was also just exploring the other stereotypes of the 1960s like the pregnant moms drinking and smoking, the bomb shelter at Penny's house, and other things.
Thank you guy so much for watching Hairspray!!! It’s one of my favorite musicals. From the soundtrack to costume design and plot. I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I do.
fun fact: the Flasher at the beginning is John Waters, the director of the original Hairspray movie. He's an absolute freakity freak and his filmography is definitely worth delving into (if you have the stomach for it)
Did you miss the bit at the beginning when Tracy said to Edna that, "our first lady Jackie Kennedy does it," meaning Jackie also ratted up her hair? That tells you the year is most likely 1961 or 1962 and crinolines were going out of style in favor of the shorter, more streamlined look also favored by Jackie Kennedy. She was probably the most glamorous first lady since Dolley Madison.
You really have to see the original by John Waters (incidentally he was the flasher in the first scene in this version). With Ricky Lake, Divine, Debby Harry, Sonny Bono and a host of other stars....
To my "county" boys, here's a true history lesson from your "city" boy - this version of "Hairspray" is based on the Broadway version that was based on John Waters' original 1988 movie "Hairspray." His version was inspired by the real-life "The Buddy Deane Show" that aired from 1957 to 1964 on what was then the ABC affiliate WJZ-TV (Channel 13 that is still in operation today but as the CBS affiliate now) It played heavily against "American Bandstand" & was famous for having the first ever integrated dancing that cost Buddy his show. The original movie was Rikki Lake's first ever acting job (she played a hairspray executive in the final scene), Jerry Stiller (Mr. Pinky in this movie) was originally Tracy's father in the 1988 version. The Von Tussles were a couple that owned an amusement park (Tilted Acres) and were played by Debbie Harry (of Blondie) & Sonny Bono (Cher's ex-husband), Amber was played by Colleen Fitzpatrick (known today as Vitamin C) and one of the back ground dancers was future "Good Wife" actor Josh Charles.

John Travolta is Edna because in every performance of Hairspray, Edna is played by a man. I mean, it didn't have to be Travolta, but with his history of dancing, it kinda fit.

also John Travolta is in grease this is the upgrade for him but he did grease first and by the way it’s a good movie grease is just about a bunch of people in high school or college I don’t know people were saying that they look like they are in college that’s about life and relationships it’s really good and funny and fun characters I wanted to mention it because this was after grease that is why he is wearing a wig and all that stuff I just wanted to put that out there for anyone who has never known what he did before hairspray
Hi Nick and Cory, This is My All Time Favorite Movie with John Travolta and Zac Efron Queen Latifah Michelle Pfeiffer Amenda Bynes Nikki Blonsky. They have a great cast for this Movie. I'm so happy you both enjoyed this Musical Movie singing along. 😊😍❤️
"Maryland is known for hairspray"😂😂😂 As a Marylander I found that hilarious. We are actually known for the best seafood, specifically crabs. The accent Travolta is doing is the closest thing to the "Hun" accent. Which is what a white Baltimorean would sound like at that time. It has faded out since.
So John Travolta is a female character because traditionally on Broadway Edna is played by a drag queen. I can’t remember why right now but it has been like that since the show premiered on stage (Maybe commentary? There’s a reason i just can’t remember). So they honored that on the film. If it wasn’t Travolta it was gonna be another male actor to keep that tradition. Pretty sure is like a rule in contract if people get rights to the play to perform it.
You have no idea how big of a deal it was to see Zac Efron say “kiss my ass” when your first intro to him was HSM Troy Bolton 😅 threw me in a loop as a kid
I feel like hairsprays the movie is kind of a fever dream because somehow I forgot that drawn Travolta played mom a big mom to be specific. I don’t remember that.
It's said that this is the "musical" version of the original 1988 film, yet the original is FULL of actual vintage music of the early 1960s--the characters just don't spontaneously burst in to song accompanied by invisible orchestras as they do in musical theater. I thoroughly recommend you watch the original--you'll have fun comparing and contrasting the two. (John Travolta can't touch Divine as Edna, although I give him credit for taking the role!)
John Travolta is the mom in this movie because it’s based off of an older movie by the same name (this is essentially just the updated version for the time/the reboot) in which Mrs. Turnblad was first played by a male in drag. It became a tradition, so now every Mrs. Turnblad for just about every rendition of the musical is played by a man in drag. They are just continuing that tradition in the movie 😊
Amanda Byne is doing well with her own thing rnow btw. Has a husband and stuff. But people keep stalking her, taking pics and saying shes ugly which really pisses me off.
My favourite pastime is watching people watch Hairspray for the first time 😂 At least they noticed it was the 50s. I've seen a reactor think it was the 00s.
I love this film. The music is brilliant. This film makes me feel happy . I want to sing and dance when it's on. Music is great from the start to the end. All great in this film 😊

Fun, touching, thought provoking & really really funny!
Whatever happened to the seaweed actor? He was fantastic!!
I’m so excited!!😭😭I’ve been asking for this
Another John Waters musical, so fun, is “Cry Baby”, with Johnny Depp and Ricki Lake, Tracy Turnblad from the first Hairspray film.
The title is SO FUNNY LMAOSJSJSNSJSJ
the amount of times i went back to “uhhhh spiders web…. charlottes web”
John Travolta is the mom because that female character is traditionally played by a man LOL
i love but also fear for you knowing you didnt know this was about racism cant imagine just getting this cinematic masterpiece on a random day unprepared ...
Yall should watch the 1988 hairspray too
it’s really interesting to watch grown men mimic and repeat things for an entire movie like I’m watching my 12 year old cousins 😭
like its kinda insane that with one video I know you two are the most developmentally stunted of your friend groups
also John Travolta is in grease this is the upgrade for him but he did grease first and by the way it’s a good movie grease is just about a bunch of people in high school or college I don’t know people were saying that they look like they are in college that’s about life and relationships it’s really good and funny and fun characters I wanted to mention it because this was after grease that is why he is wearing a wig and all that stuff I just wanted to put that out there for anyone who has never known what he did before hairspray
This movie was filmed 30 years after Grease
I LOVE hairspray since it came out i just rewatched! didnt expect this from yall but so excited for a reaction
Omg!! Right on my lunch break at work. Lots of love to you both from Brazil, love you!! 💖
It’s basically a custom at this point that whether it’s broadway or a movie, Edna has to be a man in drag 😂
Btw the flasher at the beginning is played by John Waters, the director of the original hairspray lol
John Travolta as Edna is absolutely adorable
I don't understand why people don't react to the John Waters original.
This version lacks the traditional John Waters filth. While I like this version, original is better.
You have no idea how big of a deal it was to see Zac Efron say “kiss my ass” when your first intro to him was HSM Troy Bolton 😅 threw me in a loop as a kid
It's Tradition for men to play the mom in this play. Should watch the original it's even better.
Cory looking good with the new trim
cinemascope = wide shot
i'm surprised they didn't know that
“Barnett Defies U.S., Bars.. uhhh…😅” 😂😂😂😂
Hairspray takes place in 1962, so the mom hasn't left the house for 11 years.
UGH WHAT A MOVIEEEEEEEE!!!!!
I feel like hairsprays the movie is kind of a fever dream because somehow I forgot that drawn Travolta played mom a big mom to be specific. I don’t remember that.
Amanda Bynes deserved much better.
Sitting here in Baltimore enjoying you guys making fun of it cause you’re not wrong..
I'm from Maryland and that was still accurate and HILARIOUS 🤣🤣
cinemascope is the equivalent of Imax in the 50's and yes, it is a stage show.
As someone who lives Baltimore, I hate living here😭😭
Amanda Byne is doing well with her own thing rnow btw. Has a husband and stuff. But people keep stalking her, taking pics and saying shes ugly which really pisses me off.
I dropped everything to watch this
6:07 I snort-laughed so hard at this. ❤
Hairspray is on the same level as Wicked and Chicago.
Yessssss my mom and my favorite movie! Even outside of the music and acting the message is amazing too
My favourite pastime is watching people watch Hairspray for the first time 😂 At least they noticed it was the 50s. I've seen a reactor think it was the 00s.
Even in the stage shows and the older movie with riki lake a man has always played edna its an amazing musical xx
Please do Hercules on the channel!!
You should watch Hercules next
If you can do a double feature, try watching both versions of The Producers.
I love this film. The music is brilliant. This film makes me feel happy . I want to sing and dance when it's on. Music is great from the start to the end. All great in this film 😊
