Elijah Kelley as Seaweed amazes me every time I watch this. He's just so unbelievably talented. That man can sing and dance his ass off, way beyond everyone else in the cast! And I always loved Zac Efron in this as well. He didn't sing in the first High School Musical, which was the thing u had referenced towards the beginning, and this movie came out before the second High School Musical where he actually sings in it for the first time and so this really showcased his abilities to the world. I wouldn't say I'm a huge musical fan, but when I like a musical I usually love it and this has always been at the top of my list! So good!
Fun fact: the director of the original movie, John Waters, the original Tracy and some other people from the original one have a cameo here. They are the jury at the end. Edit: the director is actually the flasher at the begining, if I'm not mistaken.
@@gaw6272 lol. The original (not a musical) is insane! Like every Water's movie, not for everyone, specially nowadays...but I love them! The order is: original movie-musical play based on that movie- musical movie, I've seen them all, love them all.
9:12 In the original 80s movie the principle deliberately tries to hold all the African American students back by using lame reasons to sent them to 'special ed', here I guess he just tries to hold them all back by giving them detention for basically no reason.
Too real so they probably had to change it: over-assigning Black students to separate special education classrooms is still a significant problem in U.S. public schools.
@@M4TCH3SM4L0N3it's more that the old film denigrated disabled children, with the term retard frequently used. It was the common term back then, but still used in a dehumanizing manner.
My daughter's high school did a stage production of Hairspray. What was interesting was that her school is less than 2% white, so most of the "White" roles went to Asians while Black students took most of the Black roles. But note the "most." Particularly jarring: Penny's mom was played by a Black student. It was only a little bit confusing trying to keep track of who was supposed to be "white" and who was supposed to be "black" in the racially driven plot. But fun.
For years I tried to hate this movie because I was so loyal to their original John Waters film, but this movie has so many amazing qualities to it and that it was impossible for me to dislike it.
I've only watched this version once when it was new (haven't rewatched it since then and haven't clicked play on the reaction yet) but I remember it feeling like a very cheap knockoff of the original. Like those budget bin animated movies that try to trick idiot customers with nearly the same name and cover art as whatever latest popular Disney or Pixar movies. (Even if Waters did still have a hand in this version and endorse it.)
@@MuljoStphoIf you watch this movie expecting a remake of the John Waters film, you're going to be disappointed. I think it's fabulous as what it is; an adaptation of the stage musical.
Zac can sing and dance. The first High School Musical Disney blended his voice, but in all the rest of his movies, it's all his voice. We are so proud of him. He came to his high school drama teacher's retirement event it was a big surprise for her. He few from a show in England to be there.
Funny you said that "why does Queen Latifah look like she needs to be in the Wizard of Oz" when she (and her onscreen son, Seaweed) were both in the live performance of The Wiz. My favorite song isn't featured in the movie musical, but is featured on the soundtrack and sung by three versions of Tracy Turnblad, which is "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now".
The movie soundtrack album includes "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now" and definitely echoes the overlooked and unstated attempt to impose generational conformity. All the kids were groomed to be their parents' mini-me, to take the parents' places in the social strata in future course. This is true in both the original and the later musical versions. You see it in Edna and Tracy, in Velma and Amber, even in Mrs Pingleton and Penny. Interestingly, it is more absent in the relationship of Wilbur and Tracy and even Motormouth Maybelle and her two kids Seaweed and Li'l Inez.
Little Shop of Horrors is another great musical. It’s up to you to pick either theatrical for sweeter ending and director’s cut for the true and faithful ending.
While I do love the Director's Cut ending because an entire Fifth of the budget was dedicated to it and all of that money Is on the screen, and it's jaw droppingly amazing I would be lying if I said I didn't prefer the Theatrical Ending, if I'm watching a movie with Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, Jim Belushi and John Candy, I expect to feel good by the end.
As much as I don't like musicals, this is one of the few I had fun with. I even played Seaweed when I was 17, one of the few roles I'd want to go back to
Same with me. I don't really like musicals that much (same with romantic movies). But Hairspray is one of my all time favorite movies. Idky. It's just so good. But hey, good for you for completing your bet!
@@buberrycrunch thank you, thank you very much. I take my bets seriously haha but yeah I don't like romantic movies very much either (there are a few exceptions) and I don't know why either, this movie just gave me a huge nostalgia rush because I was remembering my time being in the play and listening to the music so I could study it but I also made the mistake of watching the movie because the brotha that played Seaweed was something else 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
They wrote the High School Musical songs for a Tenor voice before they did casting but then casted Zac Efron who was a Baritone singer. Since he couldn't hit the notes well in the songs, he would just sing the intro and outro lines of the songs so that the songs blended well with his speaking voice but the rest of the songs in the first movie were sung by Drew Seeley. For the second and third High School Musical films, Zac said he had to put his foot down and fight for his voice to be on the tracks so they ended up writing the songs for his register so he could sing for the second and third movies. And yes, he also sang for Hairspray and The Greatest Showman. :)
I adore musicals, I grew up watching the original which wasn't a musical... the flasher in the first song is the original creator/director, whatever lol John Waters. There are lots of cameos from the original cast as well. The Talent Scout (Ricky Lake) at the very end was Tracy, Mr Pinky (Jerry Stiller) from Hefty Hideaway played Tracy's Dad in the original, etc.
I think the acting was supposed to be a bit on the campy side. Or, if not, it definitely works for me. And my favorite song is definitely "Welcome to the Sixties." I think most people go with "You Can't Stop the Beat," but the street setting of the 60's number and the whole discovery of a new way of life really gets me on that one.
Yes Zac Efron can sing basically in the first HSM he didn't do the singing because they weren't in his register i believe. However in HSM 2, HSM 3, This and The Greatest Showman he does all of his own singing
LOVE this reaction and this movie! FUN FACT: part of the reason they cast John Travolta as the mother is a nod to the Broadway musical that came before it (which I think is based on a non-musical movie from the eighties). They famously cast men to play Mrs. Turnblad much in the same way that most Peter Pans on Broadway are played by a woman. I agree, John did an awesome job as Edna!
This is the only movie I’ve watched in theaters where people were laughing, not because of a joke, but out of shear joy at the end. My friends and I did, in fact, dance out of the theater. 😊
I love "run and tell that" and "can't stop the beat" but by far my favorite is "Miss Baltimore crabs". Villains always get the best lines and songs in any media. From books to TV, movies to musicals, the villains are always the most entertaining characters. If I could sing I would try out her and any other villain. Edit to add: I also adore the song "You're timeless to me". When I'm married and celebrating our anniversary, gosh darn it that song is definitely getting played.
This film is in my top 10 of all time and watching them perform "You're Timeless To Me" makes me tear up every time. Two incredible actors doing a song about immensely loving each other despite the flaws age and time brings.
the "flasher that lives next door" from good morning baltimore is hairspray original director john waters! also, "i can hear the bells" is my favorite number/song.
One of the things i thought was brilliant about the film, is that the father, Wilbur, is the best character because he has no doubts, he has no issues with his life, he knows who he is, is comfortable with who he is, loves his wife and daughter and lives his life it’s why he doesn’t fall for Velma’s seduction tricks, and why he’s the voice of support and reason for the film. It’s really nice to see a character like that, especially when he’s played by Christopher Walken
3:25 same it took me a while to realize that Link was Zac Efron. Expect I loved this movie growing up and grew up during the HSM era and STILL didn’t put 2&2 together for years 😭
fun fact: when the they were making the movie, the producers wanted to cut or change “I Know Where I’ve Been” because typically the main character (Tracy) sings the “3 o’clock number”, the directed had to fight to keep it in cause it’s so important to the story.
I actually saw this in theaters when it first came out.... I was 9 years old... the whole reason I saw hairspray in the first place was because of Zack Efron so yes this was released after high school musical came out... I remember people thoroughly enjoying the movie and moving along with the songs not to sure if they got out of their seats during the songs but definitely at the end there was a standing ovation in the theater.... especially during the credits the standing O lasted until the credits finished and then people started to leave... And yes this was in fact Zack singing here! He didn't sing during the first High School Musical i believe Drew Seely sang the songs for Zack, but he did start to sing in High school musical 2 and 3!
They actually released a Sing-A-Long version of this movie after the initial run, in theaters. I worked as an usher at the time and people were def singing a long and dancing in the theaters.

Zac Efron did this movie between the first High School Musical and the Second one to prove he could sing and fight for the ability to sing the songs for the second movie (and eventually the third). They had recorded Drew Seale for all of the songs involving Troy for the first one before officially casting and never wanted to re-record them maybe due to budge? But then they were going to stick with Drew's voice and so Zac did Hairspray to prove he was good enough on his own to do the last two movies with his own voice. Which obviously worked.
Great reaction mello. I love seeing you in this musical spirit. This movie takes me right back to highschool. Our school did like a rock horror type performance where the movie played behind us as we did the musical numbers. I was little Inez but I also helped choreograph some of the dances cause I loved this movie growing up.
My sister was born in the 80s and showed me the first movie. We then watched this one when it came out... we had so many people in theater dancing and singing. It was a great premiere night. Fast forward to the live show, my daughter was already a fan but now is obsessed. We just saw the Broadway show live in Dallas in July. Each adaptation was amazing. All the groups of people, ages, etc joined together for something is beautiful.
You gotta do Dream Girls since you liked this one so much. Beyonce, Jenifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy!! AND it has a killer sound track. Hairspray is probably my favourite but Dreamgirls is a very close second! (It also has AMAZING acting!)
You're right. The whole soundtrack is amazing. My favorite is the finale, "You Can't Stop the Beat." When this was a Broadway show, the nonstop energy of it earned it the nickname of "You Can't Stop to Breathe." Imagine doing that live at the end of a show with that many other song and dance performances.
Seriously, this is what I needed today. I've been fighting a cold and cough for the last couple of days, and this is really helping. I don't even care the laughing makes me cough, I have a funny reactor reacting to one of my favorite musicals, this is awesome
I understand the similarity, but here's the specifics: In "Hairspray", the girls are portraying a cultural occurrence, the black 3-girl group. It was an actual 'thing', with many examples. In "Little Shop of Horrors" the 3 girls functioned as a traditional Greek chorus. The Greek chorus was created in ancient Greece as a theatrical device. They consisted of about 3 to a couple dozen background actors who complemented the main action in the play, whose purpose was to explain what was going on and guide audience attention by way of movement, poetry, singing and/or playing musical instruments. Think of it as a type of 'social narration' or the voice of the playwright. Explains why the 3 girls' clothing matched the subject matter when they were singing about the film plot details, but when they're addressed as actual Skid Row residents, the glamour is absent; when they're being the Greek chorus, no one interacts with or notices them. Gotta say, I like how the 3 girls in "Little Shop..." are named Crystal, Chiffon, and Ronette; those were the names of prominent black girl groups of that time: the Crystals ("One Fine Day"), the Chiffons ("He's So Fine"), and the Ronettes ("Be My Baby").
Love this one! If you like Queen Latifah you should check out the musical Chicago with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger. Soooo good. Queen Latifah is also in that one. One of my favorites!
A theater near me had a sing-along screening of this and the energy was incredible. They encouraged audience members to dress up too. Haha “Welcome To The 60s” and “Run And Tell That” are my favorites.
You asked if people were dancing in the theaters? My friend and I went to see Hairspray in the theater one weekend when it was first out and it blew our minds with how good it was both from the story and the music aspects that we, no joke, came back each night after work for the next week. Most nights we were one of only a few people in the theater and so dancing and singing along wasn't that disruptive. 100% worth being super broke XD
So cool to see you watch a musical and love it. A lot of guys in our society have this idea in their head that musicals are dumb, "girly" crap and never give them a chance. But I find often when such guys are convinced to actually watch a musical they love it.
As someone who was able to see this show live, For the Broadway production, during "you cant stop the beat" the cast was in the isle dancing. The energy during the entire show was amazing

Hairspray is always so much fun to watch, the music and dancing is so infectious its hard not to have a good time. If you are going to dive more into musicals on the channel i think it would be super fun to see you watch the Grease series that came out recently. It unfortunately got canceled after season 1, but it was really fun to watch and the music and choreo in it is SO good. I'm sad it got canceled, but I also think it makes it a good one to watch for reactions since it's not a long commitment. and its a prequel to the first Grease movie, if you planned to watch that on the channel as well.

See, I loved this film for its portrayal of Black joy and talent in the 60s, as well as being honest about how blatant the racism was. I am disappointed how fatphobic it was, though. John Travolta in a fat suit (rather than a fat actor/actress), constantly pushing food on fat characters like they're always hungry/eating/can't control themselves, "without love, life is like my mother on a diet", "I can't stop eating", etc. Like, I love Tracy showing how awesome fat dancers and singers can be, but they also treated her and Edna poorly in some ways.

This is how I found out this wasn’t the original
@@gaw6272 lol. The original (not a musical) is insane! Like every Water's movie, not for everyone, specially nowadays...but I love them! The order is: original movie-musical play based on that movie- musical movie, I've seen them all, love them all.
Omg!
I'm a fan of John Waters too, but he seems to be ok with the movie since him, and part of the original movie, have a cameo in this one.
I saw the original Hairspray before this one came out but this one came out when I was like 11 so I grew up loving them both
@@MuljoStphoIf you watch this movie expecting a remake of the John Waters film, you're going to be disappointed. I think it's fabulous as what it is; an adaptation of the stage musical.
It has John Waters as a flasher. He endorses it.
you can't stop the beat is the single, greatest, happiest ending of anything. IT doesn't cure depression, but it helps
Never realised until now that in the end, Tracy is seen wearing a checkerboard dress... signifying the black and white coming together.
Keke was only talking about HSM 1 Mell. Zac Efron started singing himself for the second and third movies.
While I do love the Director's Cut ending because an entire Fifth of the budget was dedicated to it and all of that money Is on the screen, and it's jaw droppingly amazing
I would be lying if I said I didn't prefer the Theatrical Ending, if I'm watching a movie with Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, Jim Belushi and John Candy, I expect to feel good by the end.
As much as I don't like musicals, this is one of the few I had fun with. I even played Seaweed when I was 17, one of the few roles I'd want to go back to
Wait you don't like musicals? Why were you in Hairspray then? Just curious.
@@ashleydowney1222I lost a bet in high school and I don't like to bet money so I said if I lose, I'll play Seaweed in Hairspray for the summer
@@BabySpike-94BWait did you have any performance background or did you just randomly wager that in your bet?
"Cutting my class tracy"...... "I apologize president bush"🤣🤣this guy never fails to crack me up
They wrote the High School Musical songs for a Tenor voice before they did casting but then casted Zac Efron who was a Baritone singer. :)
lol I grew up watching this movie and I absolutely love it! Queen Latifah has such a soulful voice its amazing. Im glad you enjoyed it.
It was definitely meant to be campy. That’s half the fun of it
Yes Zac Efron can sing basically in the first HSM he didn't do the singing because they weren't in his register i believe.
In the original, too. The mom is always a drag queen or man.
As a big girl with a big momma, I adore this movie and the relationship between Tracy and her mom!
Same!
This is the only movie I’ve watched in theaters where people were laughing, not because of a joke, but out of shear joy at the end. My friends and I did, in fact, dance out of the theater. 😊
I will say you caught on to the movie’s time period faster than Billy did😂😅
Oh yes definitely 😂😂
I love "run and tell that" and "can't stop the beat" but by far my favorite is "Miss Baltimore crabs". Villains always get the best lines and songs in any media. From books to TV, movies to musicals, the villains are always the most entertaining characters. If I could sing I would try out her and any other villain.
Edit to add: I also adore the song "You're timeless to me". When I'm married and celebrating our anniversary, gosh darn it that song is definitely getting played.
When my parents had their 50th anniversary i made a photo video for them of You're Timeless to Me!
This film is in my top 10 of all time and watching them perform "You're Timeless To Me" makes me tear up every time. Two incredible actors doing a song about immensely loving each other despite the flaws age and time brings.
I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of chemistry the two of them had. It was beautiful.
the "flasher that lives next door" from good morning baltimore is hairspray original director john waters! also, "i can hear the bells" is my favorite number/song.
One of the things i thought was brilliant about the film, is that the father, Wilbur, is the best character because he has no doubts, he has no issues with his life, he knows who he is, is comfortable with who he is, loves his wife and daughter and lives his life
it’s why he doesn’t fall for Velma’s seduction tricks, and why he’s the voice of support and reason for the film.
It’s really nice to see a character like that, especially when he’s played by Christopher Walken
3:28 “Ey They Got The Girl From Freakin Pitch Perfect Here, She Can Sing?”
My Brain Hurts, That Sentence Doesn’t Make Any Sense 😅
John Travolta makes this movie some of those quotes are hysterical “you want me to believe he’s really up there” 😂
13:10 "girl. they're about to put u down like jfk" had me IN TEARS
Oh! If we're getting into musicals, you should watch Sweeney Todd! My absolute favorite musical of all time!
i love watching people react to this movie the music is phenomenal
I know right?
They actually released a Sing-A-Long version of this movie after the initial run, in theaters. I worked as an usher at the time and people were def singing a long and dancing in the theaters.
40:03 you were already like my new favorite channel for reacting but then you start actually looking up stuff afterwards. That's so awesome to me.
Makes me happy to see people get interested in musical theater especially when it's like such a fucking feel good movie like this.
I'm happy to subscribe you made me laugh so fucking hard, today is really rough for me I found out my grandma is going to be passing away. (She wasn't the best person tbh. I'm more worried about my mama )
Your video really brighten my day I hope you know that.
It's a good feeling when you play good morning Baltimore while going to school on the bus in Baltimore
30:47 Lots of people had a bomb shelter with a lot of supplies. They were convinced that they any day now an atom bomb was going to drop.
"They got the girl from pitch perfect. She can sing" when pitch perfect was nothing but singing 😭
“Tomorrow is a brand new day and it don’t know white from black”
Powerful message. Love that line.
*_Yeaaaah!!_* 🎵🎶
This was a good adaptation of the broadway stage show. You should check out the Original film when you get a chance with Devine playing as both Tracy's mom and the head studio boss.
It also has Ricky Lake as Tracy as well. It maynot be a Musicial, but it has some banging music in there as well. :)
And the acting in both is satirical of 50s shows/movies. This guy says it's "not all that" but it's not supposed to be serious.
I AM NOW A CHECKERBOARD CHICK!
Ever since I saw this movie I quote this all the time 😂❤️
This movie, Chicago, and Dreamgirls are probably my favorite musicals! The plot and production of this musical is still so refreshing and covers so many difficult topics. Love love this.
I feel like Dreamgirls will have your mind blown with how amazing the soundtrack is
Omg he should totally do Dreamgirls!!! It’s All Over is my shit 😩I quote “Curtis was SUPPOSED to love me.” All the damn time.
Yes I hope he reacts to dreamgirls!
@@Arionthelady The finale song is my favorite by far tbh ❤️ my sister and i also will randomly re enact that scene too! Walking by like YOU LYING YOU LYING 😂😂
Chicago is my favorite movie musical! So uniquely made!
Yesss we vote for him to review "Dreamgirls"!!
Lmao the random Leo clips.😂 I love this movie so much. The songs are such bops, the costumes, the cheesy acting - everything is fantastic 😂😂 so glad you liked it
His editor is the goat 😂😂
John Travolta specifically wanted Christopher Walken, for his dancing skills.
I can see that
Honestly, this is probably my favorite musical to movie adaptations! It still feels just as fun and energetic as the stage performance!
It was a movie to musical adaptation before it was a musical to movie adaptation. I've enjoyed all the iterations.
38:55 is exactly how this movie makes EVERYONE feel when they watch it. It's the ultimate movie for when you're having a bad day.
The invader zim meme randomly in this video had me on the floor😭
Great reaction mello. I love seeing you in this musical spirit. This movie takes me right back to highschool. Our school did like a rock horror type performance where the movie played behind us as we did the musical numbers. I was little Inez but I also helped choreograph some of the dances cause I loved this movie growing up.
“Girl looking like a President” killed me lmao
Struggling to keep your composure every time Amanda comes on screen is so real of you 🖤✨
John Travolta brings such sincere joy to his role and I am there for it!
As a girl from Baltimore this is one of my favorite movies and my comfort movie
Me and my sister sure as hell got up and danced during the end credits! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
This is definitely one of my favourite comfort movies. It’s very easy to watch and is always a lot of fun!
the “excuse me i cant hear the lesson” got me so much 😂😂
You're right.
I’m going through the exact same thing right now with a cold and I loved his reaction to the musical😭🤞🏾
@ashinkosmos oh jeez, going around everywhere. I'm glad you liked it, too tho X3
The Hercules reference was accurate but yeah the Little shop of Horrors reference was good too
I understand the similarity, but here's the specifics:
In "Hairspray", the girls are portraying a cultural occurrence, the black 3-girl group.
Richard Gere also put in a fantastic job. I knew he could dance, but was thrilled he could also sing.
This reaction alone just shows you how much Mello is acting up when his lady gets dolled up lmao.
A theater near me had a sing-along screening of this and the energy was incredible. They encouraged audience members to dress up too. Haha
“Welcome To The 60s” and “Run And Tell That” are my favorites.
Same.. when I went they invited people up near the screen to dance !
Love how much fun you had with this one! Such a great movie!
"Link! Your pork is ready!!!"
So cool to see you watch a musical and love it. A lot of guys in our society have this idea in their head that musicals are dumb, "girly" crap and never give them a chance. But I find often when such guys are convinced to actually watch a musical they love it.
" If they try to stop us seaweed we'll call the NAACP " is the best line to me😂
As someone who was able to see this show live, For the Broadway production, during "you cant stop the beat" the cast was in the isle dancing. The energy during the entire show was amazing
I love this musical! I played Wilber in my local community theatre group. Every nightI cried in the wings during "I know where I've been".
Not Mel clutching his pearls at 14:20 with that head shake! 😂😂
And yes, everyone sang their own parts in the movie, which I think makes it so much better. lol.
My family goes back like 3 generations in Baltimore, as rough as the place can be I still love it, so this movie def has a place in my heart.
Remember this movie is based in the early 60's and that's the way it was back then. Just about everything they showed was how it was especially in Baltimore. That wasn't the Black Student's Class, it was detention. This is a great movie and it's actually the 2nd movie made of this and it was a Broadway Play which I saw.
After every song:
-“this is my favorite.”
I love this musical everything avout it is amazing but Mell's reaction was funny as hell. He really asked if the girl from Pitch Perfect could sing😂
This movie’s only crime was not giving us a James Marsden and Queen Latifah duet
Yoo I never usually sit through a yt this long but I risked it because it’s one of my fave films and damn, I enjoyed watching you enjoy it as much as me! Let’s gooooo
“LET ME GET THE MONKEY” LMFAOOOO please 😭
I don’t care for musicals but THIS? I love hairspray I first watched this when I was a child and didn’t even pick up that i t was about racism until I got older 😭 I just loved the songs I knew that much. Still love this movie to this day. I loved your reaction and your editor had a field day lmaoooo
12:47 I got so hype with you here 😂😂
IM CRYING AT THIS
I love how Melo recognized Brittany Snow from Pitch Perfect where she had a whole singing role is shocked that she can sing 😂
Hairspray is one of my fave musicals next to Chicago (Queen Latifah was also amazing in this) and Dreamgirls
Back in June 2008 when this movie premiered on HBO I watched it ordered it on demand and watched it A LOT. It then became one of my favorite musicals. I love the 1988 version as well.
1. Can’t stop the beat
2. Ladies choice
3. I know where I’ve been
4. Good morning Baltimore
5. New girl in town
BOOM 🎉
Rocky Horror Picture Show !!! Is a must Mello. It’s the perfect mix of weird and wonderful. The songs are so fun and addicting. Plus it has Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. ❤ I’m a sucker for some musicals, can’t wait for The Greatest Showman too.
Fun fact, it's been 10 Years since Tim had his stroke, and has regained control over the muscles in his lips and jaw as of late.
🧡 Elijah Kelly played Ricky Bell in the New Edition Story and Bobby Brown Story. The Wiz Live! He's also been in alot of other movies as a little kid. Great reaction, TFS!
One of my favorite musicals is The Sound of Music. I just love Julia Andrews! But the amount of times I rewatch Hairspray just for the songs is wild lol
