For RP it makes sense to start as an evil or neutral mythic path since the gold dragon story deals with forgiveness and redemption. Would have been cool to see a demon to gold dragon
I did an angel elemental ramapager playthrough also, then taking 20 levels of shifter as a legend when last Sarkorians released. The concept was actually very similar and it was a pretty fun playthrough. Smilodon is a solid form before chapter 5; contrary to the tooltip, it gets 4 claw attacks, not two, which coupled with pounce is actually comparable to shifter forms, though obviously without the shifter's fury or minor aspects. I found claws and then animal forms fine (wolf trip is still useful and leopard and bear are respectable for damage output until you get smilodon), particularly with elemental rampage and never used a weapon. I went hungerseed for the strength, wisdom and CMB bonuses.
Some insights into GD path from my experience: 1.Power wise, Gold Dragon need some boost; the power they get at Mythic 8 doesn't compete with what they lose from other mythic path. Take angel for example, losing merge book caster level and sword/halo to exchange for some stat boost and immunity doesn't make it. Angel spells already provide far better party-wise protections while dragon immunity only works on itself. 2.The breathe weapon doesn't seem to apply the roll penalty as it claims in the description. At least I can't observe it from the inevitable excess DLC combat log or enemy debuff stat. 3.Current polymorph spells implementation aren't friendly to wildshape druids. You can't even cast aspect of wolf or frightful aspect on your gold dragon. Casting frightful aspect while u r in GD form will just have your GD form dispelled. And any aspects spells will get removed when you shift. (They need to fix this,imho, druid wildshape has been in poor position in this game.) 4.If you want to do a bit casting and defensive route, fey speaker might be a better GD as mirror image/greater invisibility/Greater Heroism are in their list(and you keep the pet), not to mention Charisma is the best stat for defense if you don't care to have one dip in scale fist monk. Plus Incorporeal bonus and has a paladin casting bestow grace on you. you are now a fortress in GD. 5.Transformation Spell stack with GD ab boost, so the worse your bab is, the higher your ab will become ultimately. Steal it from loremaster(steal transformation and sense vital for 3 lvl dip) or use scroll, and you(as a feyspeaker) have at least +10 attack bonus on top of what Gold Dragon boost.
Re:3, Wildshape is a polymorph effect. Casting one polymorph on top of another just replaces it. There's nothing to 'fix", because it's not broken - it's working as intended.
@@paolung Only if the spells are polymorph from the start. The Dev want to help master shifter feat to work on some build so they make some spells labeled as polymorph but they don't consider that they break others. Aspect series of spells aren't that useful to druid if they don't work on wildshape. And can you imagine frightful aspect don't even work on Gold Dragon form? Let alone all these polymorph spells don't work consistently. Some work mutually while others not. Play a druid, cast those spells and wildshape, and try the reverse order. Then you will know what I am saying. Apparently this isn't intended or it should work in consistency.
Ty for a guide Bro ) there is a difference between GD dragon and normal - it is types of buffs it gives. GD is polymorph and stacks with anything. While normal dragon is size and dont stack with legendary proportions
What I would like to point out is the breath is applied to dice ROLLS. If it works correctly (and for me at least it seemed like did) the enemies cannot roll natural 20 anymore. Which is huge. No more automatic hits and crits
If it works that way, that's a bug. A Natural 20 is just that: a roll of 20 on the die. It's not that it is, strictly speaking, just a +20 on your roll (though it is that as well), it's that it's an automatic hit and critical threat, regardless of target AC (which is why if you roll a Nat20, even if you have a -100 penalty, you automatically hit).
@@paolung I have to recheck it but why does ít have to be bugged? A lot of mythic abilities break the game mechanics, (Trickster is actually all about doing that). Why is it impossible that an ability denies natural 20s?

I have one question I cannot find an answer to: does the shapechange actually function as a wild shape? Like, before you get the golden dragon, when you use the shapechange for dragonkind III, is it limited as a spell or is it unlimited like a wild shape? Both by uses per rest and time spent in the form.
Shapechange is a spell, so it has limited uses, however, a merged Angel build gets many level 9 spell slots (fast too), and the duration is also very long at 1m/level. The spell also lets you keep changing into the other shapes while under the duration.
I think the gold dragon was really intended as a good alternative to a lich. The BAB bonus and dragon form is most attractive to an arcane caster rather than warriors who will specialise in other weapons and who gain far less from the BAB progression. The spell damage bonus also clearly is intended for offensive spellcasters. It does work pretty well as a lategame shifter also, but obviously wasnt what owlcat had in mind when making the path. One issue for inevitable excess is that the holy damage isnt a toggle as far as I am aware, and that can disable some element specific bonuses. Honestly, though, other than a pure caster, the gold dragon functions a lot like a much less powerful and versatile legend, who also get large stat, BAB and save bonuses. The loss of mythic abilities really hurts a pure caster, but for everything else, 20 class levels will nearly always outshine the gold dragon abilities. Unfortunately, as a pure caster, there are considerably stronger options, including lich, demon and azata, and angels are much stronger divine casters.
I went with Brown Fur/Elderitch Knigh Lich into Gold Dragon and it was insane. I could basicly solo Threshhold (Granted I did not use the dragon form, but oh well).
Various unconnected thoughts -Its really hard to not take a pet because a lot of the time you feel useless compared to the wolf riders. They roll up and get all their attacks in and by the time your KC is in range to do anything the fight is basically over. Unless you know its going to be a big fight and you have them all on the edge of the fog - I went Azata-> Gold Dragon because some bug broke the azata story and it was replaying stuff from act 3 in act 5. That sucked. I didn't like the gold dragon story at all though. This guy is going to make you do 3 jobs and then give you a little lecture that a 10 year old would find trite. The stats were nice but I've been to the abyss and seen a queen self destruct with jealousy. Your little talk about how its good to be good is maybe unsophisticated. Ember should have been the gold dragon, not me. So maybe not so unsophisticated -Being a fat ass dragon that can melee stomp people into the ground from being a sorcerer that goes pew pew was nice. -On another level it was also annoying. You do your elemental damage stuff at like mythic 3 and then they make that redundant at mythic 9. I hadn't planned to go GD so I was ok with a respec. My Azata guy was a blaster caster, early game of course the same conjuration stuff everyone does but if I was planning blaster gold dragon from the start, what then? There's a lot of game between 3 and 9
Another pretty awesome Gold dragon build is Brownfur Transmuter Lich going into GD. Takes some real mental gymnastics to make the RP work, but mechanically, it's great.
Why do you take initiative feats. Even with every initiative feat and characters specialising in Dex you rarely go before enemies on unfair. It seems like a waste, and on lower difficulties it doesn't really matter if you go first or not.
Does the shifter's claws and aspects work in dragon form? Since they seem to make a shifter subclass tailor made to each mythic path. And that way you could be a dragon the whole way through.
Currently for Dragon Form (from Shapechange) Bite is the primary attack that counts for AoO as well. You still have 2 claw attacks, but they are not your primary attack. Not sure how that works for Gold Dragon form. Maybe that's different?
Something to note is that you still need weapon focus in at least one weapon type to make use of shatter defenses, even if you take the feat through gold dragon, this is because shatter defenses only applies on hits from weapons that you have weapon focus in.

It was a "Dracolich" type of character that goes Sorcerer first as opposed to Druid and merges with Lich to retain the great spells as a Gold Dragon! I'm planning on posting it later together with Dragonblood Shifter GD.

I just bougt the game a few months ago, on play sdtation. This is now my second playthrough, this time as Azata. The only thing sad about the Gold Dragon path ( which by the way is an awesome path ), is that the gold dragon path come too late in the ghame. It would have been great and very usefull to have it in act 3, and especialy in act 4 where you are in the abyss, with all these demons all around.
My first Unfair win was with Gold Dragon, and I played a tank Oracle, and I had INSANE armor class with all the buffs to charisma, natural armor and all. I even got the Ice mystery for Seamantle lol, though the special mage armor replacement you get with it is actually pretty good. It caps at 12 AC instead of 14, but it costs no Mythic feat or dips. The three free feats even let my aasimar pick that special halfling feat that gives a bonus to dodge while fighting defensively, which stacked with my aasimar wings. And this is now that Touch of Glory doesnt work like it did. The breath was also useful so I didnt use all my spells, and it worked a charm with my creeping doom, which uses your mc's dc, to disable all thosr proteans and axiomites in the Dlc. I dont remember the exact number, but I easily had more than 120+ AC, and this was before I fully knew the game (I didnt realize Legendary proportions worked with the dragon form in stacking AC). I also had over 1 thounds hit points. Thid path is by far my favorite mechanically, even if the story is meh. The funny think is that it had a very weird interaction with the profane gift that both bonuses to the highest ability would shift from Charisma to Con once I changed into dragon form, so I had to unequip and then reequip belts of Constitution in order to keep it in Cha even after morphing.
i wondering if they planned to add paths with tentacles or talons, slam and didn't get a chance to. do you have an oracle version of this?? i would love to see that. i would love to see updated guides for the dlcs if they incorporate major changes to a path.lunge was pretty big.
If a damphir Gold Dragon gets negative energy immunity does that mean they cannot be healed? Does the Arcane Trickster Surprise Spells damage get converted to D10?
The dragon path is a realy good idea that was just badly implemented. Nothing in there realy stands out, unfortunately. It realy is the jack of all trades and master of none (in a very bland way)
I've seen people defend it by saying "It was a Kickstarter stretch goal, so it's fine that it's underbaked"', but it really isn't. Honestly, I'd say Owlcat messed up the mythic paths on a fundamental design level. There shouldn't have been any "late paths" at all. We should've gotten a base path at the end of Act 1 instead of the bland "Mythic Hero" stuff (as in, Angel for Good, Demon for Evil, Aeon for Law, Trickster for Chaos), and then given the opportunity to either double down, or switch to another path at the end of Act 2 (E.g.: As a Demon, you want to get rid of the Rage, so you become and emotionless Lich, or want to find redemption, and become a Gold Dragon). This way, there would have been so much more time and opportunity to flesh out these paths, and you wouldn't run into stupid stuff like Azata switching over to Swarm (to big of an alignment swing), or an Angel becoming a Gold Dragon (going from Good to Good is pretty meaningless). Oh, right, and the path is also pretty meh mechanically speaking, I suppose. That kind of thing never bothered me much, because I run a modded game that fixes a lot of it (ToyBox is practically mandatory for this game), but I guess they could've at least tried to do something truly interesting with GD. I mean, immunities and whatnot are fine, but when going from my Oracle "Wards and Storm of Justice go BRRR!" Angel to "I have a few extra stats and a breath attack" Dragon, it gave me quite a nasty whiplash.
I am new to this game, only just starting out, but I am a little confused. You don't actually chose angel at any point in this do you? You just get the angel spell book when you 'merge' because you're a druid?
Hi there! You will choose your true first Mythic Path at the end of Chapter 2, and you have to select Angel there for the build. Then, at the beginning of Chapter 5, you can switch from Angel to Legend. During earlier sections of the game, you can choose some Mythic Path options in dialogue, but they don't lock you into anything, although some are required to unlock other Paths like Trickster & Aeon (Angel is always unlocked by default). For example, you can pick the Demon dialogue options during Chapter 1 & 2 and still go Angel at the end of Chapter 2.
@@cRPGBro Yeah that I can understand from a min-max point of view, it doesn't serve much then. I can't kill things in one turn cause I most often build characters based on who they are lol, so I can end up with characters that aren't super good, stats-wise. I just looked at it and thought, hey that's pretty damn good lol, I can't be critted :D But yeah if they're already dead they can't crit anyone either haha
It shouldn't. A natural 20 is a NATURAL 20, penalties are irrelevant. If you roll a natural 20 with a -100 penalty, it's still an automatic hit. The best way to think about it is that there's a 5% chance of a guaranteed hit or guaranteed miss per roll, regardless of bonuses or penalties. Though "Always a Chance" can eliminate the 5% miss chance on every roll, GD breath attack doesn't eliminate the 5% chance of guaranteed hit.
@@darkandy9794 The issue with Magus into Lich > Legend, is that you will lose all Lich Spells & Powers when changing into Legend, unlike a Lich Sorcerer, Witch, Arcanist or Wizard, which gets to keep all the powerful LIch spells.
I maded dragon from mage. 3 levels of knife master for sneak attack, dodge and 1d8 dice for sneaks. Four levels of arcane mage for caster level, mage spellbook and +2 caster level ability which helps make buffs last for 24 hours. 10 mystic trickster for free sneak attacks. 3 loremaster for one spell and one feat. Buffs - transformation. This one makes your BAB = your level. But this one also stacks with dragon BAB, so you get 36 BAB for free. Mystic trickster + knife master + spell grants you 12d8 sneaks. And you get 13 sneaks per round with 100+ damage.

Honestly, though, other than a pure caster, the gold dragon functions a lot like a much less powerful and versatile legend, who also get large stat, BAB and save bonuses. The loss of mythic abilities really hurts a pure caster, but for everything else, 20 class levels will nearly always outshine the gold dragon abilities. Unfortunately, as a pure caster, there are considerably stronger options, including lich, demon and azata, and angels are much stronger divine casters.
I went with Brown Fur/Elderitch Knigh Lich into Gold Dragon and it was insane. I could basicly solo Threshhold (Granted I did not use the dragon form, but oh well).
Various unconnected thoughts
-Its really hard to not take a pet because a lot of the time you feel useless compared to the wolf riders. They roll up and get all their attacks in and by the time your KC is in range to do anything the fight is basically over. Unless you know its going to be a big fight and you have them all on the edge of the fog
- I went Azata-> Gold Dragon because some bug broke the azata story and it was replaying stuff from act 3 in act 5. That sucked. I didn't like the gold dragon story at all though. This guy is going to make you do 3 jobs and then give you a little lecture that a 10 year old would find trite. The stats were nice but I've been to the abyss and seen a queen self destruct with jealousy. Your little talk about how its good to be good is maybe unsophisticated. Ember should have been the gold dragon, not me. So maybe not so unsophisticated
-Being a fat ass dragon that can melee stomp people into the ground from being a sorcerer that goes pew pew was nice.
-On another level it was also annoying. You do your elemental damage stuff at like mythic 3 and then they make that redundant at mythic 9. I hadn't planned to go GD so I was ok with a respec. My Azata guy was a blaster caster, early game of course the same conjuration stuff everyone does but if I was planning blaster gold dragon from the start, what then? There's a lot of game between 3 and 9
Another pretty awesome Gold dragon build is Brownfur Transmuter Lich going into GD.
Takes some real mental gymnastics to make the RP work, but mechanically, it's great.
Yeah, the Brown Fur bonuses together with Dragon Shape & Polymorph are really fun!
Storywise perhaps, but GD is always great for an evil playthrough that becomes a redemption arc.
Why do you take initiative feats. Even with every initiative feat and characters specialising in Dex you rarely go before enemies on unfair. It seems like a waste, and on lower difficulties it doesn't really matter if you go first or not.
Does the shifter's claws and aspects work in dragon form? Since they seem to make a shifter subclass tailor made to each mythic path. And that way you could be a dragon the whole way through.
Currently for Dragon Form (from Shapechange) Bite is the primary attack that counts for AoO as well. You still have 2 claw attacks, but they are not your primary attack. Not sure how that works for Gold Dragon form. Maybe that's different?

Something to note is that you still need weapon focus in at least one weapon type to make use of shatter defenses, even if you take the feat through gold dragon, this is because shatter defenses only applies on hits from weapons that you have weapon focus in.

It's a pity the Thundering Claw of the Bear God isn't in WotR naturally. It'd apply some extra damage while you're wildshaped into a dragon.
Indeed! It's the perfect item for a Shifter, really strange it wasn't included in the DLC.
Not sure if this is a bug or done intentional, but you can't take Shifter feats as a Gold Dragon feat, which is a bummer.
Likely the GD stuff was hard coded before the Shifter feats and the GD feats just weren't changed.
Finally, what build was that with crossblood and lore master?
It was a "Dracolich" type of character that goes Sorcerer first as opposed to Druid and merges with Lich to retain the great spells as a Gold Dragon!
I'm planning on posting it later together with Dragonblood Shifter GD.

what is the best Sword of heaven at Mythic 4 for this Build??
I just bougt the game a few months ago, on play sdtation. This is now my second playthrough, this time as Azata. The only thing sad about the Gold Dragon path ( which by the way is an awesome path ), is that the gold dragon path come too late in the ghame. It would have been great and very usefull to have it in act 3, and especialy in act 4 where you are in the abyss, with all these demons all around.

lol I also did a straight 20 elemental rampager build for gold dragon. Great minds, etc. It was interesting comparing your build to mine.
My first Unfair win was with Gold Dragon, and I played a tank Oracle, and I had INSANE armor class with all the buffs to charisma, natural armor and all. I even got the Ice mystery for Seamantle lol, though the special mage armor replacement you get with it is actually pretty good. It caps at 12 AC instead of 14, but it costs no Mythic feat or dips.
The three free feats even let my aasimar pick that special halfling feat that gives a bonus to dodge while fighting defensively, which stacked with my aasimar wings.
And this is now that Touch of Glory doesnt work like it did.
The breath was also useful so I didnt use all my spells, and it worked a charm with my creeping doom, which uses your mc's dc, to disable all thosr proteans and axiomites in the Dlc. I dont remember the exact number, but I easily had more than 120+ AC, and this was before I fully knew the game (I didnt realize Legendary proportions worked with the dragon form in stacking AC). I also had over 1 thounds hit points.
Thid path is by far my favorite mechanically, even if the story is meh.
The funny think is that it had a very weird interaction with the profane gift that both bonuses to the highest ability would shift from Charisma to Con once I changed into dragon form, so I had to unequip and then reequip belts of Constitution in order to keep it in Cha even after morphing.
i wondering if they planned to add paths with tentacles or talons, slam and didn't get a chance to. do you have an oracle version of this?? i would love to see that. i would love to see updated guides for the dlcs if they incorporate major changes to a path.lunge was pretty big.
If a damphir Gold Dragon gets negative energy immunity does that mean they cannot be healed? Does the Arcane Trickster Surprise Spells damage get converted to D10?

The dragon path is a realy good idea that was just badly implemented. Nothing in there realy stands out, unfortunately. It realy is the jack of all trades and master of none (in a very bland way)
I've seen people defend it by saying "It was a Kickstarter stretch goal, so it's fine that it's underbaked"', but it really isn't.
Honestly, I'd say Owlcat messed up the mythic paths on a fundamental design level. There shouldn't have been any "late paths" at all.
We should've gotten a base path at the end of Act 1 instead of the bland "Mythic Hero" stuff (as in, Angel for Good, Demon for Evil, Aeon for Law, Trickster for Chaos), and then given the opportunity to either double down, or switch to another path at the end of Act 2 (E.g.: As a Demon, you want to get rid of the Rage, so you become and emotionless Lich, or want to find redemption, and become a Gold Dragon).
This way, there would have been so much more time and opportunity to flesh out these paths, and you wouldn't run into stupid stuff like Azata switching over to Swarm (to big of an alignment swing), or an Angel becoming a Gold Dragon (going from Good to Good is pretty meaningless).
Oh, right, and the path is also pretty meh mechanically speaking, I suppose. That kind of thing never bothered me much, because I run a modded game that fixes a lot of it (ToyBox is practically mandatory for this game), but I guess they could've at least tried to do something truly interesting with GD. I mean, immunities and whatnot are fine, but when going from my Oracle "Wards and Storm of Justice go BRRR!" Angel to "I have a few extra stats and a breath attack" Dragon, it gave me quite a nasty whiplash.
I am new to this game, only just starting out, but I am a little confused. You don't actually chose angel at any point in this do you? You just get the angel spell book when you 'merge' because you're a druid?
Hi there!
You will choose your true first Mythic Path at the end of Chapter 2, and you have to select Angel there for the build.
Then, at the beginning of Chapter 5, you can switch from Angel to Legend.
During earlier sections of the game, you can choose some Mythic Path options in dialogue, but they don't lock you into anything, although some are required to unlock other Paths like Trickster & Aeon (Angel is always unlocked by default).
For example, you can pick the Demon dialogue options during Chapter 1 & 2 and still go Angel at the end of Chapter 2.

So the breath attack pretty much stops all nat20 rolls? Isn't that quite powerful?
I think the main issue is by the time you get it, most encounters including bosses are over in 1 round anyways.
@@cRPGBro Yeah that I can understand from a min-max point of view, it doesn't serve much then. I can't kill things in one turn cause I most often build characters based on who they are lol, so I can end up with characters that aren't super good, stats-wise. I just looked at it and thought, hey that's pretty damn good lol, I can't be critted :D But yeah if they're already dead they can't crit anyone either haha
It shouldn't. A natural 20 is a NATURAL 20, penalties are irrelevant. If you roll a natural 20 with a -100 penalty, it's still an automatic hit.
The best way to think about it is that there's a 5% chance of a guaranteed hit or guaranteed miss per roll, regardless of bonuses or penalties. Though "Always a Chance" can eliminate the 5% miss chance on every roll, GD breath attack doesn't eliminate the 5% chance of guaranteed hit.

@@darkandy9794 The issue with Magus into Lich > Legend, is that you will lose all Lich Spells & Powers when changing into Legend, unlike a Lich Sorcerer, Witch, Arcanist or Wizard, which gets to keep all the powerful LIch spells.

I maded dragon from mage. 3 levels of knife master for sneak attack, dodge and 1d8 dice for sneaks. Four levels of arcane mage for caster level, mage spellbook and +2 caster level ability which helps make buffs last for 24 hours. 10 mystic trickster for free sneak attacks. 3 loremaster for one spell and one feat. Buffs - transformation. This one makes your BAB = your level. But this one also stacks with dragon BAB, so you get 36 BAB for free. Mystic trickster + knife master + spell grants you 12d8 sneaks. And you get 13 sneaks per round with 100+ damage.
