Dave, as someone who has followed you for 10+ years across all your work and social media pages, this is one of my favorite things you've done. You have a knack for taking deep and thoughtful insights from both an insider and outsider perspective and combining it into something that's so accessible and fun while having a clear takeaway.
I’m most worried about Tokyo Vice. Also, Julia, Doom Patrol, and the upcoming Dune show about the Bene Gesserit, among others.
Just an anecdotal observation that many of my 30-something peers watch and discuss Discovery content over HBO Max content at ratio of like 10:1. That’s not me and likely not this audience either, but it’s not surprising Discovery has weight to throw around since their machine is on 24/7 at every doctor’s office I know. Time will tell if these flavors can mix, and I agree early signs aren’t promising.
They are so lucky they have Villeneuve and Phillips locked in for Dune and Joker. They already lost Nolan and Snyder, and really pissed off Villeneuve with the simultaneous stream/theater release which almost affected Dune part 1. I would not be surprised if major directors and actors decide to avoid WBD produced films, unless they change their tune.
Great breakdown, thank you. I've wondered what the commotion was about the HBO merger since it happened and stopped paying attention when the one show I most cared about (Our Flag Means Death) wasn't in the mass of cuts. Tragic what's likely going to happen (is already happening) to what was my favorite streaming service. But also pretty disgusting how the new leadership is going about it- callous, disrespectful, and seemingly uninterested in maintaining good relations with the people actually making the products that bring the company value.
Dave,
Strongly agree with your point that it is the way he is doing it. Great video Dave.
I can wrap my mind about Zaslav not wanting to be make overly expensive movies for the streaming service and personally, I'm mixed on the idea of making things like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars for tv as I think it makes the brand a little less special. That being said why not give Batgirl a theatrical window?
Great shirt, Dave
The analysis I’ve been waiting for. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Decoding TV needs to review The Rehearsal on HBOMAX
Excellent summary Dave!
Nice video Dave. So everyone would like to be Marvel right now, including WB I imagine, the place for event movies and shows, but this person is pulling away from any possibilities of his company being that. Its very strange.
Such a great video so nicely put together, insightful measured commentary and opinion clearly explained and witty at the same time.
nice shirt, I'm an ATP listener too 🎧
Good video. Did I miss when the channels are supposed to combine? I’m wondering what happens if you get your HBO through your AT&T cellular plan?
I heard the signed the HBO chairman to a multi-year deal for what it’s worth
Batgirl getting shelved was so bizarre and out of left field that I started wondering if they weren't doing it just to build fan interest for the film by saying that no one will ever get to see the film hoping it would create demand and launching a fan campaign to
I, for one, can't wait to see how bad Discovery goes scorched earth and ruins one of the best streaming services out there. Unbelievable how tone deaf they are.
It's so funny. I did annual subscriptions to HBO MAX it was set to renew on August 5th. Then on the 4th, I hear all this nonsense. And I made sure to cancel that annual one. So crazy that literally one day before I was going to give them a year's payment, they tell me HBO is a colossal mess
