I sort of half agree with you here. Terms like that should be used as ballparks, not definitive scales. Like if you’re talking to a friend about how powerful you think a character is, I think describing them as “low admiral” for example, is a good way to get your point across without much explanation.

Crocodile fluctuating powerlevel is not a thing. The only reason he lost is because he stupidly decided to fight luffy man to man to prove a point, rather than his mighty devil fruit powers, and even then he took ludicrous damage from luffy and survived. The only reason people like to act like he was weak, is because there's some stupid idea that Luffy was weak at this point. He wasn't. Sure he didnt have haki, or his gear, but luffy breaking his way up through the bedrock of Arabasta was one of his single biggest feats of raw, brute, physical strength in the entire series. Storm is ludicrously powerfull, and all that energy was directed at one, single target, a target that survived might i add, fespite luffy's best efforts to turn him into paste.
Another feat that's actually ignored is when Luffy grab crocodiles arm after his water spilled thus exposing his weakness crocodile screamed out in pain. I always said that Luffy was very strong he was just always fighting guys that were far more experienced than him until we get to the marineford Saga
I'm not so sure Crocodile "got stronger" in Marineford. Oda has gone on record to say he introduced him too early in the story. He was the first villain to have Luffy beaten and left for dead twice. Luffy survived because of luck and later beat him once he figured out a practical way to exploit his wet weakness. If anything, that just makes pre timeskip Luffy broken. But otherwise, good video. One Piece powerscaling is hard because Devil Fruits just make it difficult to properly scale. Luffy beat someone like Enel, but Enels fruit power makes him so broken he could beat alot of opponents Luffy struggled with. I disagree completely with your take on Crocodile but for a different reason. Crocodile being weak in Alabasta but stronger in Marineford makes sense if you follow the hints. He was originally in the New World but got demolished by Whitebeard. Then right before he returned there, Mr 1 alluded to the fact that Crocodile was not in 100% physique during the times we saw him pre-timeskip. This means that the Crocodile who Luffy defeated was still recovering from a longterm injury. That also justifies why he became "stronger" over time, as his body was recovering. Outside of this, any explanation for Crocodile losing would just be damage control and ignoring plain inconsistency in powerscaling. There would be no rational reasons for Luffy to have beaten him otherwise.

I guess when it comes to "power levels" in One Piece, portrayal seems to matter more than feats or takes precedent as feats are very hard to come by due to how much they take a back seat. For example, you could say that back in the day, Whitbeard was the only one who could rival Roger and fight him to a standstill. This makes Whitbeard = Roger at the very least. But wait, Shiki was considered a rival to Roger back in the day and Garp fought Roger countlessly and nearly killed him. So does that mean Roger = Whitebeard = Garp = Shiki? Well not exactly. Shiki had already understood that Roger was on another level than him and even considered Whitbeard to be the next guy to rule the seas after Roger. He confirms that he's someone not on their level and it took Garp and Sengoku to take him down. Someone who already was stated to nearly kill Roger. However that statement was not the important one but it was to convey that Roger trust Garp like a crewmate to take care of Ace. I basically came to this conclusion by using the portrayal of the story. Not once using feats.

You forgot the biggest issue with scaling. Almost no 1v1 fair fights. Man people get smacked by 10 people at the same time, devil fruits being used smart etc. Or even worse. People simply make mistakes in one piece and lose. Or even greater! Some charqcter run away when they realize they cant beat someone even Luffy does it! Imo its the most realistic fights in most shonen

I think Oda pretty much just build his world with the idea in mind that there are a few fixed power levels that exist and that Luffy will face them as he progresses in order to become Pirate King. Like.. (F) regular people: civilians, marines, pirates, soldiers, fishmen, Waiters, (E) superhumans: Alvida, Hatchan, Mrs. Monday, Duval, Brownbeard, Kyuin, Gifters (D) Paradise mini-boss: Buggy, Arlong, Mr.2, Bellamy, Blueno, Baby 5, Mont d'Or, Headliners (C) Paradise end-boss: Smoker, Lucci, Moria, Supernovas, Vice Admirals, Caesar, Germa 66, Tobiroppo (B) New World mini-boss: most Shichibukai, Yonko commanders, Enel, Magellan... (A) New World end.boss: Yonko, Admirals, Mihawk, Dragon, Roger Obviously there is variety within those tiers and edge-cases in between but i think it's safe to say this is the way power scaling in OP is fundamentally laid out by Oda. All the science that fans come up with to power scale falls flat considering Oda will make characters as strong as the plot requires them to be. New powers serve the purpose of keeping the story interesting. The fact that Croco or Lucci didn't have haki before the time skip doesn't mean that they were intended to be weaker than mid-level guys from later arcs who have haki. I feel like a lot of fans apply this shounen logic that Luffy becomes way stronger after every arc and therefore his future challenges must be way stronger than previous enemies. But the way the story is written Luffy was always facing really strong enemies except in later arcs he finally defeated them at their strongest without having to nerf them.

Just because the series kind of encourages it doesn’t mean it’s productive. Like it’s fine if you’re excited to learn more about Shanks and Mihawk. It’s ok if you’re hyped to see who’s stronger. That’s only natural. But almost nothing about the mihawk vs Shanks debate has changed in a decade. The story is free to spin it either way. But instead of admitting they don’t know fans will argue about it as if they do. I personally find it annoying. I simply think discussions of power scaling are best for series that are complete. Or at the very least for the parts of it that are complete. Like Naruto’s Fandom for example has a way better community on this front. Due in large part because the majority of characters (in particular top tiers) have displayed what they’re fully capable of. In short I hate it when people sperg out. It’s a bit personal for me because I had this one friend who would bring up shanks vs Mihawk or Kaido vs Akainu every week and I just get sick of it. Honestly, I don't have a problem with powerscaling. Some of the theories we manage to come up with make sense. However some parts of a fanbase go through the roof with being biased. This is just one instance, but the fact that some people actually use "HAX" or "Reaction speed" as if that matters in the slightest. This is a personal annoyance.

One Piece has been the top seller for years. Yes it’s not #1 every year now but it’s natural for most series to peak and then fall. It’s unreasonable to expect it to be #1 for another decade. Even then it’s volume sales still consistently perform in the top 10 yearly. It’s clearly a very successful manga to this day even if it’s not literally #1.

It's made irrelevant because of so many other factors like df abilities, weapons, gadgets, haki, etc.

You literally defeat the whole purpose of your argument less than halfway through the video. You claim that these characters’ levels of strength is kept intentionally in the dark in oder to spark debate and interest, and then when people are interested in discussing the things that the narrative wants them to discuss, you complain about it?
Just because the series kind of encourages it doesn’t mean it’s productive. Like it’s fine if you’re excited to learn more about Shanks and Mihawk. It’s ok if you’re hyped to see who’s stronger. That’s only natural. But almost nothing about the mihawk vs Shanks debate has changed in a decade. The story is free to spin it either way. But instead of admitting they don’t know fans will argue about it as if they do. I personally find it annoying. I simply think discussions of power scaling are best for series that are complete. Or at the very least for the parts of it that are complete. Like Naruto’s Fandom for example has a way better community on this front. Due in large part because the majority of characters (in particular top tiers) have displayed what they’re fully capable of.
In short I hate it when people sperg out. It’s a bit personal for me because I had this one friend who would bring up shanks vs Mihawk or Kaido vs Akainu every week and I just get sick of it. I basically made this video because I see many people like that in the community.

Nowadays powerscaling is just a fun way to measure characters up to each other within the confines of the information sandbox Oda has given to us. Obviously power-scaling in a finished story is way more “efficient” i guess because all of the questions have most likely been answered like y’know obviously Madara > Obito. But the funnest aspect of One Piece is the mystery thats why people love to speculate on every aspect of it. And also I think Oda realizes that aspect is very important when it comes to the battle aspect of the story because at the end of the day its a battle shonen, Like actually think about it there are so many aspects of the story that cause you to compare different characters in terms of strength, status or otherwise; getting the One Piece is literally set up like a race where the people closest are the strongest, bounties which can be an indicator of somebodies power/danger/importance level constantly being compared between chars, the parallel of chars to be even in strength ie;Rodger/WB, Sanji/Zoro, Mihawk/Shanks like the story is practically BEGGING you to compare the strength of characters so as long as its in good fun I think its okay

Honestly, I don't have a problem with powerscaling. Some of the theories we manage to come up with make sense. However some parts of a fanbase go through the roof with being biased.
This is just one instance, but the fact that some people actually use "HAX" or "Reaction speed" as if that matters in the slightest. This is a personal annoyance.

One Piece has been the top seller for years. Yes it’s not #1 every year now but it’s natural for most series to peak and then fall. It’s unreasonable to expect it to be #1 for another decade. Even then it’s volume sales still consistently perform in the top 10 yearly. It’s clearly a very successful manga to this day even if it’s not literally #1.
