Making the Elder Wand - From Real Elder Wood!

- Yes, real elder wood! It's a nightmare to source and process because it's considered a weed in the UK and has no value as timber or firewood! You also need to find large enough trees with straight trunks so that timber can be harvested with avoiding the pitch which is like a sponge. Then you have to dry it... it loves to warp and split! But hey part of the mission to make every Harry Potter wand from real wood!

To be fair this video would have about 1 / 10th of the views if it wasnt elder wood.

The fact this man was not only able to make the wand and has the desire to aswell and knew all the perfect movie scenes to choose for certain events throughout the video shows how true of a fan he truly is. As they would say, it’s bloody brilliant!
Also might I suggest for the future to drill out the center and put a metal rod in to stop it from being so flexible?
@@toastymemes9346 thanks for the kind words. I'll never put metal rods in - that's what WB do! But it's near impossible to drill any sort of hole straight on a piece like this

I was browsing for a wand through The Noble Collection (WarnerBros gave them the trademark for their molds of the wands they used on set), but realized they are all 15 inches and made of resin so that’s how I ended up here because I was searching for true wooden replica wands. I did however see someone ask if they are durable and NC replied by saying they use metal rods to sturdy up their wands, so that’s where my suggestion came from. But thank you for informing me it’s not possible and I went to the end of the video again and you’re right it would definitely cause the wand to break if you went through the middle with a drill, thanks for informing me because I plan to take a wood working class in college to learn this very skill and I would’ve definitely ended up using a rod!
@garricksapprentice a couple years late here. But you could split the wood to start, route of a rod or thin wire foe the center, glue back together, and then turn with rhat rod in rhe center.

Woww, SEVEN carves at the bottom of the wand, the most powerful magic number and it is REALLY all over the place throughout the movies and the books: seven floors at Hogwarts, seven potters disguise, seven school years, seven horcruxes, seven weasleys, seven players in Quidditch, and so many more!!

I'm originally not interested in this, neither harry potter nor woodwork, but watching you making this with such perfection, making ironic comments about yourself with the film snippets really made my day, and i am kind of proud of you for probably making the first real elder wand.

The editing is priceless! and the wand is truly magical.
You should definitely try and make bellatrix lestranges wand, it has a strange curve to it, that I imagine would be hard to turn.
You can do that curve with fire and water. Thats how they made wooden ships.
@@unknownusername9414 Yes and famously, violin bows. They're perfectly straight sticks of wood until an alcohol flame gives them the permanent camber (curve).
Bellatrix' wand looks to be about four times as thick of a violin bow. As a woodworker myself I think I would be doing it all by hand rather than turning it.

The thing with Bellatrix's wandering is however, is that the wand itself isn't curved. It is straight. Only the handle handle curved.

I made my own elder wand. I dont know what wood i used. Mine snapped at the top. Yours is so good.

This *had* to be one of the more nerve wrecking ones you've made! I can only imagine the whole time you were carving it, especially considering you were using elder wood, which I'd never use due to the properties of the wood, that you were thinking "Don't break! Don't break!" .......Especially as it got narrower and narrower! I remember buying a wand online a few years back that someone made using elder.......It had a unique design, being square, instead of round, with diamond patterns......Likely to accommodate or work around these issues!
Of course the number of grooves on the bottom part of the wand would be seven. I mean, all Potterheads know that’s the magical number in the HP series,
