Most of the people here probably never saw the original.
But what made it so timeless and original was not just the story but that addition of Jim Henson's production working on all the animatronics and puppetry.
You won't see that in an adaptation today. You'll get a soulless CGI cash grab, hoping parents will not know any better.

The plot, independent of the original Neverending Story novel, continues the adventures of young Bastian, as a group of bullies threaten the world of Fantasia and its inhabitants, accessible only through the book. Same, remember the scene of Atreyu's horse geez that broke me as a kid, and the part with that wolf when he's hidden in that cave and then jumps out and attacks Atreyu, just absolutely terrifed me as a child, i'd never saw a kid character being attacked by anything in a movie before. But just such dark moments like that, but also with magical feel and adventure, such a wonderful movie; it should not be touched at all, it's simply too perfect really.
ALL these young parents today interested in taking their little ones to see this new adap, should show their kids the 82 classic first.

This new adaptation of TNS is hinted at aiming more closely to the novel, given that it was referenced a number of times in the official announcement. I doubt that there will be little, if any, call backs to the original film.
I loved the 1984 film as a kid and still find it a charming movie with overall good art direction and a still outstanding music score. It remains very rewatchable.
I read the novel initially at 19 years old and recently again last year at 43. I feel most viewers of the original film, especially those in the USA, are not actually familiar with the book, as collective memories recall the film. In it's native Germany and possibly Japan I'm sure that the novel is still regarded as a classic; in 2019 the original publisher released an impressive illustrated hardcover version for it's 40th anniversary....which I have in my collection.
Therefore I believe most fans here aren't actually aware of how much the much the original film changed, simplified, or left out due to the creative process or by necessity, so I will comment some on this.
The first fact that jumps out at me is that the second half of the novel was never filmed. TNS Part 2 from 1990 borrowed a few token elements from it, but to call it an adaptation is incorrect. Part 3 displays the disservice and frankly insulting result that continued a downward spiral to the film series, especially one that makes no attempt to reference the novel at all.
The second half of the novel is thematically very different from the first half which was the basis of the original film. Michael Ende certainly had his reasons for dismissing the film, some of which I understand. I think perhaps tension maybe with the personalities involved played a part in it. I do believe that his expectation to get the entire novel adapted in one film was unreasonable...I can understand why he particularly loathed the ending, because in the context of the novel, the film's ending doesn't make sense. So this new adaptation needs to consist of at least 2 films. If for anything else, the second half of the novel should get a proper adaptation.
The second thing of note is that the original film did change a fair bit. Although it's arguably a serviceable adaptation of the novel's first half due to getting the basics of Atreyu's quest down, those familiar with the book can see how much was changed or thematically simplified. Falkor isn't supposed to look like a dog; in fact the physical appearance of the main characters and some of the secondary ones are notably different to the descriptions in the book. Bastian's physical appearance makes a difference in his initial characterization, for example. Other differences I believe were due to time constraints...a new adaptation doesn't have to stick to the 90 minute mark for example, and can shoot closer to 2 hours. The ending can't be that of the '84 film. Other changes simplified the thematic tone of the book, or because the technology wasn't available to fully realize Ende's creativity.
I'm curious about the project but it's to early say if these new films are going to be successful or not. Hopefully it's on the upside without the fallout that marred the original production.

As long as it’s not ‘woke’ I will be optimistic in this new adaptation. I am so tired of so much being ‘woke.’ Hollywood and Disney need to realize this before they both go bankrupt. I read the book multiple times, including just recently as an adult. It is my favorite book in the world. Michael Ende masterfully weaved in esoteric concepts in all his books but this one was clearly his master piece. I am looking forward to a modern movie made that can actually capture its magic. Petersens movie was odd and incomplete. It can only get better now, especially with the Ende organization keeping a close grip on the project.

I agree on the book. Also one of my all-time favourite books. It has such great psychological and spiritual depth that wasn't even remotely touched upon in the 80s movie, so I sincerely hope they find the right writer and director for this who has a proper understanding of those depths. It's definitely a good thing that the Ende org has tight control with this, but I'm probably less hopeful about them finding the right talent to carry out the work. I really, really hope I'm wrong.

If they can get a filmmaker of Denis V. caliber, they could pull it off. The original film only covered the first half of the book, so in terms of content, think it will be enough for the audience.
Two movies might be enough, just don’t pull a Hobbit like Warner Brothers did and stretch it out to a trilogy with a subpar product.

Sick of reboots no one asked for, just because they were mentioned in a popular TV show about 80's nostalgia. I'm talking to you Ghostbusters. Are there any original stories for 2020's kids? because they seem to be cursed to see the same old stories their parents had, over and over again. This is getting really old. There are incredible fantasy and sci fi novels from the last decade that are worth adapting and creating incredible franchises from them.

Either way it's a risky business for those partaking. A remake of such an iconic and beloved movie will only be accepted if it is stellar-regardless of its truth to the book. Any type of mistake, be it directorial, editorial, or by actor will never be excused and result in total failure. Dune is a rare exception of a direct remake and sequel better than the first. So it's wise of them to avoid that but even sequels are subject to scrutiny one of the few movies ever made to surpass its original (by fans not money)was Aliens.

There is a good reason why the original edition of the book has no illustrations while many other of Ende's books do have them. The novel is about imagination. In a special way it's a book about books, written is a straightforward but often lyrical and philosophical style...at least the German original. The first movie, while being beautifully shot and fun, is something completely different. The Neverending Story never needed a film and new technologies won't change this. Ende's other book "Momo" on the other hand could really benefit from a beautiful and meaningful new movie adaptation...

The plot, independent of the original Neverending Story novel, continues the adventures of young Bastian, as a group of bullies threaten the world of Fantasia and its inhabitants, accessible only through the book. Jim Henson's Creature Shop supplied all of the fantasy characters as animatronic puppets.
Was not as lose to the book as they wanted, but was fantastic nonetheless.

If (THE NEVER ENDING STORY) is made into a live-action show series; I hope the creators of it, might be able to add a bit from the 80’s movie of it, with the main source of the story, and combined them together in some way.
From what each character actually looks like, and then later add new characters in the show.
For instance there’s the known Luck Dragon race, from the actual book story, that has the head of a lion.
Along with other characters that are just like the ones from the book stories.
When it comes to the destruction of the planet:FANTASTICA; I imagine the name of the new world, is planet:FANTASUA, and I imagine some of the beings living on it are similar to the ones who had died.
Like for instance the tribe, that hunted the purple buffalo, from the former world, who were a native human tribe.
Well I imagine the new race, are half elves, who have similar traits to them, and I imagine instead of one great young hunter, there are two great young hunters.
I also imagine that a new type of Luck Dragon race exists, on this new world, and I imagine they have the heads of dogs, instead of having the heads of lions.
In addition I imagine that the (Child Like Empress) she is the only one, who remembers the former world, and it’s because she is the only survivor.
That goes from her former friends, to her loyal servants, to her former allies, and to the many races of beings, who once existed.
Plus to add I imagine she remembers, the many types of wildlife, that once existed, and what the lands of many parts, of the former planet:FANTASTICA were each like.

There is so much material in the original novel, he will not need to add more padding to fill in the gaps. He might need to omit some things for the films, like what he did with Tom Bombadil in the LOTR trilogy.

well...here's my hot take. The author was absolutely disgusted with the film...ESPECIALLY 'the statues' (if ya know, ya know), something that made him ultimately distance himself completely from it because of the lack of morality (especially from a children's film) that it represented. If it's in line with the book, then this reboot would be a fair shot. Not a remake, but a true, honest, reinterpretation. I think anyone who has the grit can make something close to the original source material. That should be the right of someone who loves the original work; but just rebooting the 'movie' itself.....why even bother? I could say the same thing for The Shining. I loathe the original movie; the book is vastly better and much closer to the reality of actual life in regards to its characters.

I really wish we could just see NEW movies. A lot of the schlock out today simply re-envisions, or worse, directly copies old IP's. It is shameful that, rather than capitalizing on something new, we can only re-hash the great shows and movies of yesteryear. I loved the Neverending Story, but I don't really care anymore to see things re-made, especially when they get trashed the way Disney trashed Star Wars. Will this be yet another thing that gave me warm fuzzies, but now, just makes me nauseous. And what fans don't seem to understand that in many ways, THEY are the problem. The production companies *know* that they can get a lot of seats filled with people who loved the original show; however, because the original was good don't guarantee a great movie, just guarantees filling some seats. Stop supporting this wave of tactless art, and stop attending premieres. I am not saying don't watch it or engage with it, but wait for it to stream and stop lining pockets that do not deserve to be filled.
