Part of the reason why people love this series, especially the first one, is that it was one of the first horror movies to turn the tropes upside down. The characters do not act like idiots (at least the main characters) on top of that, the monster is beatable, so it has a grounded feeling. Add in the humor and the diverse cast and it's a cult classic for a reason.

I saw this movie when I was a kid and had a nightmare about it. It really bothered me, despite being old enough to know it was just a movie. A couple days later, my grandfather (who had watched it with me) saw me walking weird in the house and, instead of making fun of me or telling me it wasn't real, just stomped his foot on the floor twice and said, "The house is built on a concrete slab. Those things can't get through." The memory makes me smile every time I see this movie.

Fred Ward's character is a true working man. You never see such portrayals anymore, because actors all come from acting schools nowadays, but look at actors in films from the 1930s until the Sixties and Seventies. Fred Ward had a life before he went into show biz, and his character rings true. Kevin Bacon saw what he was doing, picked up on it, and they show how two working-class gentlemen really talk, interact, joke, and carry themselves. Practically unique in any film or television series made since the 1980s.

    LOVE THIS MOVIE!!
I grew up watching this movie on the Navajo Nation when I was younger. The idea of the movie came from Brett Maddock and SS Wilson, both of whom were in the Navy. They were sitting on a large rock in a Nevada Nuclear Test Site, and one of them said, "What if there was something under the ground that would never let us off this rock?"
    And thus, TREMORS was born!
The original title was "Land Sharks", but the title was used in an SNL segment. Then they used "Dead Silence", "Beneath Perfection," "Stillness In The Ground," then finally TREMORS.

You are right about the dangers of giving Melvin an untrained kid a gun. You could see how he was waving it around sweeping the muzzle across several people with his finger on the trigger! I love how Bert as a responsible gun owner gave Melvin an empty gun to get him moving so he could not hurt anyone, and even after seeing him try to fire the revolver and it just going click click. When he took it back he opened the action looked to make sure it was still empty before he put it back away. Most movies to day don't show this kind or safe firearm handling so sad.

To answer your question about what the big gun was that Burt used to finish off the graboid in his house, it was a double barrel 8 gauge shotgun (much bigger than a 12 gauge), loaded with solid lead slugs. I have a single barrel version of it. Tremors 2 is definitely worth watching. The rifle that Burt uses in the sequel is...let's say even more impressive and after years, I finally got one for my collection. I even recently bought some props that were used in Tremors 3.

Do this was filmed almost entirely outside of lone pine CA in the eastern sierras which is probably the most beautiful and peaceful and diverse place in the world. It’s about 4 hrs away. Took my friend from Norway there and she couldn’t believe this was CA. The mountains you see is the Sierra Nevada range and the tallest mountain in the lower 48, mt Whitney. This was filmed in the Alabama hills at the foot of the sierras. The dirt road you see is probably movie road where 100s of movies, mostly westerns but also Iron Man was filmed. Lone pine has an excellent movie and film museum. You can drive up to those mountains where there are rivers and lakes and waterfalls. It’s a desolate wasteland at the foot of the mountains cuz the mountain streams have been pumped into the LA aqueduct to bring water to the people of Los Angeles. This film is part thriller and part comedy. It’s a very quirky and fun film. Glad you got to react to it.

We love Tremors. Whenever the teenagers get together it's one of the movies we always put on because it's good no matter how many times you see it. The sequels get more and more obtuse. I spent a couple of years in a tiny smudge of a town in Arizona and I'm glad I hadn't seen this yet at that time because I spent a lot of time out walking the desert. The worst thing I came across was rattlesnakes and scorpions and you can walk a wide berth around them. I learned early to always carry water even if you're just going next door.
"That" jiggly machine you asked about cleans and polishes the used brass bullet shells. The brass is the most expensive part of a bullet so it pays to collect them and either sell them or clean them and re-use them reloading yourself. Most enthusiasts learn to reload their own. Just a few people can go through a thousand rounds in one day of target or competition shooting.

One of my favorite series of films!
I saw this in the theater when it was released, and the audience went crazy over the basement scene!
Wait 'till you see the sequels: some are great, some suck, but they're all fun.
