Why is Venkman "so casual about everything?" Because it's a 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐲, guys! Murray's characters are often too-cool-for-school, sarcastic, casual guys with crushing one-liners.

Bill Murray pretty much improvised many if not all of his dialogue.
Rick Moranis is an absolute treasure. Every role he does, he f'n SLAYS it. I miss him. Not dead, he just stopped making movies decades ago when his wife died of cancer so that he could be home to raise his kids.
Wish he would come back, even if it's just a minor appearance.
Rick’s the bomb. It’s a shame he got typecast in “nerd” roles after this movie, because if you watch him on SCTV, you’ll see that he was adept at playing all KINDS of different characters. He did play great nerds, though. And at least not all his nerd characters were the same. Like, Louis was a ridiculous, nebbishy dork who tried way too hard to be cool and failed miserably every time, but Wayne in Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a devoted father and husband and a kind, gentle guy who happened to be a scientist that just couldn’t catch a break. Those two characters were nerds, but they couldn’t be more different from each other.

He always locks himselfs out of his own apartment and becomes the keymaster. The writing is so on point.
same with the female character being the gate keeper. she has (3) differernt men chasing her in this fiim and she's guarding that "gate" too.

These guys totally missed the premise of this movie They treated it like it was a horror scary movie as opposed to it being more of a comedy. I guess in this politically correct world we live in today the humor that was used in this movie is not as excepted or understood as it was back in those times when this movie was made. I could see how people raised in this generation as opposed to then would have a hard time understanding the dialogue and jokes that were used in movies back 30/40 years ago. That being said I truly miss those days when things weren’t taken so seriously and people weren’t so offended as they are today at comedy that’s completely innocent.
The unusual level of anger towards Bill Murray's character during this reaction was almost funnier than the movie itself.
Right? I thought it was funny and strange how you found Bill Murry's character so repulsive, where originally he was perceived as funny. Also, Rick Morannis character was just perceived as a creep that you'd watch with a side eye instead of a kind sad pathetic dork. It's interesting how different the perception is from the different generations!
It kinda made me mad. Bill Murray is an international icon that needs protected at all costs lol.
I saw another reaction video and they kind of reacted the same to Venkman. I’m thinking it’s a dated thing somehow. Sleazy, smartass but lovable characters maybe aren’t as much of a thing now? There’s a lot of characters in this era like that.

@@fionnmaccumhaill3257 It's a different world today, and not entirely for the better. Yes, Dr. Peter Venkman was repulsive, but, that was what was funny about him. His character was a caracture of sleazeballs. Most people didn't know people who were actually like that, so it came across as comical. Today, with our interconnected world, while it's great that I can read your comment and reply back, etc., we also see that there are people like that in the real world and so his repulsiveness is a turn-off. Sad really, as they also show Venkman has a well-hidden heart of gold.
For my generation...many of whom grew up on classic horror, Nightmare in Elm St, Friday 13th, Psycho, etc...Ghostbusters was a fun film with ghosts! Comical and creepy! Perfect!
I mean this is a generation where the entertainment industry considered Return to Oz, Labyrinth, Time Bandits, and The Never Ending Story to be movies made for children. You think when we grew up we were going to be scared by Ghostbusters? You should be happy if you got a rise out of us with Poltergeist.
I love how it was the normally stoic and reserved Egon who got angry and said “your mother.” It’s proof that he is normally calm and collected and that it takes a lot to get him angry. Rip Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman.

exactly, it was a comedy. It had a few "jump scare" moments, but all in all it was hilarious
I don't think young people are used to comedy movies having real storytelling. The genre has degraded so far.
I found the movie even funnier with their reaction. LOL

The actual horror parts were really well done, though.
Venkman asking the librarian if it's her time of the month always made sense to me. He's investigating a psychic phenomenon. Psychic powers reside in the brain. Hormones affect the brain, so there may be a correlation. Most people think it's just a weird/funny question though..!

You edited out Rick Moranis's best line! At the end, after awakening from his demon dog phase to wreckage and marshmallow goo, he says "Boy the superintendent's gonna be pissed!"
My favorite line from this movie: "I've worked in the private sector. It's scary. They actually expect results."

That's funny, but my favorite line is "OK, she's a dog". That's funny on a few different levels!
When I was growing up "somebody blows their nose and you wanna keep it?" always made me laugh. This movie is so quotable. Tons of great lines. "You're right. No human being would stack books like this" even gets into the meta of making the movie itself.
Oh! "I feel like the floor of a taxicab" is another favorite.

LOL I never thought I'd see the day when adults were scared of Ghostbusters. I watched this in the theater when I was nine and loved it. It definitely is a new generation of people. Lord help these two if they ever see alien or the ring or anything truly scary.

Or indeed who have to face anything legitimately daunting in the real world. I really hate sounding like an old man, but first off, I'm not even that old, and second, the way this was viewed honestly leaves me stunned. I'd say it has to be an act due to how bizarre it seems, but unfortunately I've observed the general public recently.
Yeah I really do like this couple a lot. I'm not trying to insult them it just baffled me that they were scared. I really do want to see them watch a scary movie.
It's not a generational thing. Many kids these days say that Jaws isn't scary.
Francis E. Nealy (the hotel maid) saying "What the hell are you doing?" is my favorite line in the entire movie. It became my catch phrase with friends after I saw that movie. 😄
Followed by the 'sorry, we thought you were someone else' is hilarious 😂
This actually was not scripted. The explosions that actually happened to make the shot seem more real were much stronger than she was told and was actually extremely shocked, making her reaction real. xD

Born in 79' and I watched this movie almost every day after school when I was 6-9 years old. This was turned into an animated show for children after the movie. It is difficult for me to believe grown adults are the least bit scared of a comedy. Also, I saw Platoon, Robocop, and Predator in the theater when I was 7. They must lead sheltered lives LOL.
Right!!?? I was born in 78, so I totally agree. I grew up on Grimm's fairy tales, so this was hilarious to me lol. I cannot believe 2 adults can be scared by ghostbusters. It's ridiculous and I'm here for it hahaha
Robocop scared me as a kids, born in ‘81. I wasn’t allowed to watch R rated movies. Mom rented it for me. Oops.
Dunno if anything from ghostbusters scared me but I do remember a few things that did. The wolf from never ending story, maybe the rat or owl in secret of nimh, then the bird things in dark crystal. Those were the creepy as a kid that I don't wanna see in a dark corner in the middle of the night. Oh also maybe the troll thing from Cat's Eye, stealing your breath as you sleep. Other gore or horror or monster movies like House were fun to watch. Maybe it's the darkness and fangs or something.

My youngest son, who is now 42, watched this movie every day when he came home from kindergarten (VCR days) 🤣🤣🤣
My older cousin and his girlfriend took to me to this at the theater in the mall because they had to baby sit me while they were on a date, I was four years old, this movie didn't scare me I loved this movie and they even got me a Ghostbuster's T shirt after the movie. My parents were kind of mad at my cousin not because they thought it would scare me but because all I did was babble about the movie non stop annoying them.
I’m the same age and did the same thing,I saw it in the theater the year before and we obsessed. Breakfast Club was another one I watched a lot at the time. I always hated movies that were meant for kids when I was that age,I’m not sure I knew I was a kid🤣

Me too until the end, when the marshmallow man came out I watched from the top of the basement steps. This and Nintendo were life back in the 80s lol.
This is my history. Once my parents rented it for a weekend, in the 80's, and I watched it like 7 times in two days.
You guys finding this scary made me realize how old I am. And i was born 3 years after the release of this movie. Been watching Ghostbusters films all my life, never thought of them being scary.😂

Having grown up in the 70s/80s with Dan Akyroyd, Bill Murray, Rick Moranis, and Annie Potts it was hard to be scared of a movie with them in it. Also I LOVED the cartoon.

The character Bill Murray was playing, was Bill Murray. He's that character in everything he has played in.

Nope. My daughter is 14 and I think I first showed her Ghostbusters when she was maybe 11 or 12. She loved it ,got it etc. She is terrified of the librarian turning into monster thing part though but so was I when I first saw it when I was 7 or so.
My kids absolutely love Ghostbusters, they're 16 and 20. I think it just depends on the sense of humour you're brought up with and have.
I do agree that this generation overanalyse absolutely everything though and don't take humour in the context of the era it comes from.
Thank God I've made sure my boys don't do that. Very sensitive and empathetic kids but great senses of humour!
It's because she's constantly talking over the lines. They miss so many jokes because of that.
Times like this I notice real differences in generations. My generation watched this as little kids & found it hilarious.... I never thought it was scary. I thought all the ghosts were funny. Rick Moranis & Sigourney.... HILARIOUS!! But.... different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Back then it wasn't "graphics", it was non-computer created special effects, which consisted of all kinds of unique ways to make things appear realistic. Unfortunately, the gargoyle effects were done with stop motion and a few other techniques and they're quite dated... but the rest of the movie holds up fairly well.
These days, it seems that pretty much any post-production visual effect gets lumped into the term “graphics”.
Visual FX before CG wasn't NOT "graphics" in the dictionary sense, but nobody called it that. "Computer Graphics Imagery" or "CGI" or just "CG" was the term they came up with to differentiate digital effects from old school optical and practical effects. It's cringe-y to hear even today because even though it's all composited digitally now, there's still all sorts of old-school non-digital post-fx techniques in use like miniatures.

well some of the stuff from 80's Kids Moves is considered Nightmare Fuel now I think our standards of "scary movie" require a lot more punch!
I remember watching Poltergeist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Dolls and many other horror/scary movies when I was 6. After that, I was hooked! I LOVE scary movies and so do my kids. My daughter's favorite is Child's Play. Any time we have a thunderstorm she asks to watch Chucky. She's 6 and she's been watching it for years! Both my kids are horror nuts, just like momma! 🤣
The reality of course is censorship has become much stricter when it comes to move ratings. G rated 80's movies would be PG today ad some PG movies might get 18+ only ratings. In the 80's a could could explicitly be declared dead, by the 90's it could be made clear but not said, bit now? Death is a G rated movie is forbidden!

My wife and I met the brother Ernie Hudson (the 4th Ghostbuster) at the Big Apple Comic-Con (in NYC) back in 2009. He was such a crazy cool, and down to earth man. Very nice guy! :)
It's a action-comedy. A lot of people remember the comedic portions of Ghostbusters, but tend to forgot the action!
You definitely have to remember this was the 80s about Bill Murrays behavior in the beginning. We were never offended by that scene in the apt. It was such different time. Plus it was Bill, and we loved his humor 💕🤣
Truer to say we hold men to a higher standard today. I was born in 1974 and love this movie, but Bill Murray always played assholes in the 80's/90's. Watching this now, I hate his character.

Strange Brew.
This was the film that mastered horror/comedy and ushered in a new era of filmmaking. Also, much of the paranormal lore is based on real life findings of the secret societies Aykroyd's grandfather was part of.
I've been watching Ghostbusters since I was a kid in the eighties I never thought about it being scary until I watched you guys reacting to it ,this is so hilarious
If you want a change of pace, something that is just plain fun, watch "The Blues Brothers" So much great music and cameos.
Did you ever see Belushi & Akroyd in "Neighbors" (1981)? It's kind of unknown, but an old favorite of mine. A rare chance to see John playing the uptight, straight-laced role.
With their appreciation of music, The Blues Brothers is a must!

Comedy and horror go well together when done correctly, and "Ghostbusters" is a prime example. If you want to go further back in Hollywood history, may I suggest "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" from the 1940s. Abbott an Costello were a vaudeville duo that successfully transitioned to movies. This movie has the boys meeting up with not only Frankenstein, but also Dracula (played again by Bela Lugosi, who originated the role) and the Wolfman, with Lon Chaney Jr. reprising his most famous role once again. Plenty of laughs and only very mild horror. Your kids would probably like it, too. (I first saw it when I was a child and loved it.) There's absolutely nothing objectionable in this film.

My second favorite movie of all time. You CANNOT be offended. It was the 70’s, man. We didn’t know. Hahaha. This bunch of guys was comedy personified for our generation. They were everywhere. We loved these guys.

This is a family comedy. I remember watching this in school when it came out as an 8 year old.
I can’t believe you saw Bill Murray and only know him as a guy from Space Jam. He is a comedy movie legend.
Humor and comedy today is lifeless and this reaction proves it. Everything is taken at face value these days. Satire takes some thought and when when done right, like right here, is masterful. Too worried about being offended and sucking the enjoyment out of things, couldn't even finish this
I’ve seen other reactors react to this, Airplane and Police Academy and none of them took them seriously but in Jay and Amber’s defense they did admit growing up they didn’t watch tv or movies because they were only into sports
Agreed! As puzzling as I find some reactions to it, I remember seeing this as a kid with my cousin (same age as me) who didn't "get it" ~ 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹. In fact, I remember the 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 thing she laughed at was: "I feel so 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗸𝘆." ♡︎
It's like they have to spell out everything in each scene to understand the behaviour of characters. Oh my god....lighten up!
A highly recommended scifi film starring the lead actress from this movie is "Alien." But if you were scared by "Ghostbusters" ... "Alien" will definitely scare you. So ... handle with care!
As for the lead actor, a great movie with him in it, that isn't scary at all, is "Groundhog Day."
I love Alien and Alien 2. Definitely not a movie for either of them, but especially Amber. Nope!

This channel is going to be entertaining considering J has hardly seen any movies. I think you’d have a fun time with another 80s movie The Princess Bride, no scary bits to worry about 😄 It’s checks off all the boxes: adventure, fantasy, romance, comedy.

Normally I'd agree with you about there being no scary bits in TPB, but considering how scary they thought Ghostbusters was, this time may be an exception. I can think of at least several scenes that might be a little too much for them (R.O.U.S.'s are one example).
agree, they would like that one. It's actually a little hard to fit in a category but a very entertaining movie.
THe best bit of Peter's experiment at the begining: after you translate his psychological terminology, he is doing what he claims to be doing. The girl who isn't recieving the shocks, she's the control group. The guy is the experimental group. Negative reinforcement - he gives the stimulus (electric shocks) when the guy is wrong. He never gives the shock to the girl because the control group never recieves the stimulus, but he tells her she is correct. This is so the experimental group, the guy will know that he won't recieve the stimulus when he's right. SO the experimental group goes from not guessing right, to guessing the control group's card to almost guessing his cards right. (he said a couple of wavy lines, when there were 3 wavy lines).
You know, that's actually a very good point. While i certainly understand control groups, i never thought of it that way, in the context of the film. I guess because i was focused on being entertained, i wasn't dissecting it.
Welcome to the 80s! I swear the film industry was trying to scar us for life! Lots of comedies and family movies were actually pretty scary. I think we all just kind of got used to it. I love this movie so much, I used to watch it over and over. Such a fun one!
If you think Ghostbusters was too scary/intense, you're going to miss out on so many incredible movies. Especially The Thing, The Shining, Poltergeist, A Nightmare On Elm Street, Alien, Aliens, Predator...
They could never handle The Shining 🤣

Saw this in theaters the first go around at 16. Didn't really find it scary, but I can understand some of the jumpiness. Ernie Hudson did a fantastic job as the "every man" character.
Yes, if you guys think this was scary, this is rated G in the world of scary movies.
These kids not knowing who Bill Murray is adorable.
Two things:
1. The dream sequence of Ray and the female ghost was actually a cut segment where he and Winston are hunting a ghost in a Revolutionary War-era fort. Ray tries on the general's coat and then lays down in bed because he's exhausted, then the ghost of the general's lover shows up and... well, you see how that goes.
2. Walter Peck is one of the great triumvirate of 80's douchebags along with Ellis from Die Hard and Burke from Aliens.
In addition, the dream ghost is Dan Akroyd's wife, Donna Dixon. If you want another fun movie they're both in, check out Spies Like Us.
The actor playing Peck was _in_ Die Hard; he was the nosy reporter.
Fun Fact: between those two roles, he still gets crap today.

It's not so much an 80's film, as a Reagan-era film. That "douchebag" worked for the EPA. In the 70's, they were the organization to protect us from water and air contamination. But Reagan demonized the EPA in the 80's right-wing shift. Here, they are portrayed as the villain. Normally, you should be on the side of the EPA trying to stop un-regulated nuclear power plants from popping up in the downtown of your city!
Bill Murray is a legend. Love him in Groundhog Day and Scrooged (that’s one for Christmas).

One of the greatest movies ever made. Still holds up today, almost 40 years later.
This movie is just the beginning of a great story with all the follow up movies. The latest Ghostbuster movies are just as great.
I saw this movie when I was 8 at a drive-in theater and never screamed or got scared lol. Slimer is the Mascot for us Gen Xers. 😂👻
Back in the day when this was released, it was considered a comedy. I saw it in the theater when it came out and everyone laughed through the whole thing. We did not have a scare reaction to it. Was more story telling than scary. Things have certainly changed from back then.
This is a good point. I think if they'd seen it in a theater surrounded by 100 other people, they wouldn't have felt scared at all. They would have just laughed with everyone else. They were home alone, though, and took it more seriously than they otherwise would have probably.
In their defense it has been so long since Hollywood has put out a good comedy if they only watch movies from the last twenty years they may not know what one is.

humor in this movie. I have watched this movie so many times I can quote it and I’ve also played the role playing game based off this movie and Ghostbusters 2. You simply must rewatch this movie and absorb all the subtle humor it has to offer so you can appreciate Ghostbusters 2 and Ghostbusters Afterlife.
I’m addition, read up on the movie chops of the actors and actresses in this movie…..and then watch the movie again. You will not be disappointed once you apply the actor’s histories to the performance in the movie. If you do this, Ghostbusters becomes one of the funniest movies ever made. Trust me on this.

Yes, they cut out the elevator scene with the first switch on of the Protonpacs and didn't notice how Egon subtile said Peter how much the Hotel should pay. Also: If they think THIS was scary, they never should watch Alien.
Boy how times change... lol When i was a 9 year old in 1984, we all just found this extremely amusing..... and those of us who saw it and lived back then still feel the same way today.
I honestly never considered it scary.
Also... most people used to laugh like crazy during the electric shock scene because trying to land that blonde chick would have been universally laughed at. Now apparently Venkman is a dirty old man... lol Which was true then too... just not really received that way so much as it was comedic.

Also! Dan Ackroyd (who plays Ray) is who you can thank for this movie's existence. He co-wrote the script with Harold Ramis (who plays Egon) but, it was really Dan Ackroyd's passion project from the very beginning. Another movie Dan Ackroyd co-wrote and starred in is "The Blues Brothers", which you guys desperately need to see 'cause you would geek out so much from all the music artists that cameo/perform in it!

Why is so many people on the street??? Because it was the 80's!! No Netflix, no computers, no cellphones, no playstations, just doing your life and mostly on the street, seeing what's happening! It was absolutely natural.

Came back to watch this reaction again. Still priceless. Looking back, the acting ability of Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis after they've been possessed (by Zuul and Vinz Clortho) is astounding.
Someday I hope you watch Ghostbusters 2 (1989), Ghostbusters: Answer the Call (2016), and Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021). GB2 is cute and just as funny as GB1. Answer the Call was panned by critics and fans, but it a solid film with brilliant cameos in my opinion. Afterlife is spectacular, a fabulous homage to the original, and the true spiritual successor to GB1.
If you love Dolly Parton's music y'all should watch Steel Magnolias. It has a great cast in it including the queen herself Dolly Parton.

What a movie, the actors who played Ray (Dan Aykroyd) and Egon (Harold Ramis) wrote the movie.
The symbolism of the Key Master ( Male ) & the Gate Keeper ( Female ) took me a few years to get but now you know you won't forget it.... A great cartoon series followed this movie which released so many amazing toys which are now collectable.

Most don't catch the irony that it is the Keymaster that spent most of the film locking himself out of his apartment.

In case you didn't know, the actors who played Egon & Ray wrote the movie. But what is often overlooked was that high-caliber SFX/VFX were SO laborious in 1984 that the idea of making an Effects-Driven movie AND a legitimate Comedy into a cohesive singular entity was considered completely unfathomable. One requires an expert-level combination of timing and appearing organic, while the other requires countless hours of meticulous work by technical artists. But Ghostbusters did it -- It was the first ever successful Effects-Driven Comedy, and the fact that it was ALSO a functional featherweight Horror flick on top of all that only shows how brilliant it was.
A great reaction. The best jump award goes to Jay,for when the arm came up through the arm rest. Not only did it make Jay nearly jump out of his seat. But he then lightly grabbed, Ambers arm & made her jump as well. Had me in stitches.

I saw this in the theater when I was six. Then I demanded t-shirts and toys and to see it at least 5 more times. I’ve never seen anyone actually bothered by this movie. It’s hilarious! My son has loved it since he was about 7!

Ghost Busters is one of those fun tongue in cheek movies from the 80's and early 90's I like to call "Saturday at the Drive In" movies. Like "Big Trouble in Little China", "Last Starfighter", "Red Sonya", "Ariplane", "Back to the Future", "Ferris Bueller's day Off", "They Live", "The Princess Bride", "Labyrinth", "Little Shop of Horrors", "Beetlejuice", "Beverly Hills Cop", "Clue", "Lethal Weapon", "Legend", "Blues Brothers"...
All fun over the top stories. You could stay busy with content for a long while just on this genre.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was still 7 years old. Some of the scenes were a little scary, but I loved it. I went into the movie thinking of it as a comedy, so that tempered a lot of the scary stuff, and the sexual aspects of it mostly went over my head at the time.
The receptionist is the grandmother on Young Sheldon. The EPA guy is the villainous TV reporter in Die Hard and Die Hard 2. Dana is the hero of Alien and Aliens, which you need to see, as well as a *lot* of Bill Murray movies (like Stripes, Zombieland, What About Bob? and Groundhog Day).
They could hardly handle Ghost Busters and you suggest Alien???? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This was my son's first movie, when he was about 9 months old. He watched the screen the whole time and LOVED it! For years he would sing the song, only instead of neighborhood, he would say meeny-who.
This was probably the most odd reaction to one of my all time favorite movies. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cringe.
However, given that you now probably understand what lens you should be watching these movies through because of the comments section, I’d be curious to see what you think of Ghostbusters 2.
