    • @Test-xd8dk
      @Test-xd8dk 3 роки тому +4

      @@bara8928 You can also promote crewmen/women to officers and customize them further if deemed prudent. Of course, your ship has a officer limit too, so keep that in mind and choose carefully. However, promoting crew members to officers only allows them to select more jobs and grants more skill points (as well as the ability to equip gear), it does not grant attribute bonuses as directly hiring from contacts does.

    • @Test-xd8dk
      @Test-xd8dk 3 роки тому +3

      I would just add that while each crew member can have up to 3 jobs (essentially skill trees), there are a fixed amount of jobs, thus you are destined to have some crews with the same skill trees, which is how the game is supposed to be played. Equipment-wise it is the same thing, fixed amount of gear, some crew will be using the same gear.

    • @gnaskar
      @gnaskar 3 роки тому +2

      Yeah, it's been on my wish list for a while, but platoon sized crews with full per person customization from the get go is enough to take it into buy me now territory.

    • @Test-xd8dk
      @Test-xd8dk 3 роки тому +1

      @@gnaskar Just some facts about the game: the maximum number of crew is currently 42 (7 officers and captain). Each crew member right off the bat of being recruited has a job, which cannot be changed, unless they are promoted to officer, which then they can take on two additional jobs but still retain their original job. Depending on your captain's level, up to 5 non-officer crew can equip gear. Job talents are fixed but you can decide what to train for your build. Appearance and names can be customized. Each crew has their own unique positive or negative traits (albeit sourced from a large pool of traits) of up to 5 (abusing some bugs allow for more than 5). Crew attributes can only be changed via gear. Crew skills can only be changed via job leveling besides original hiring bonus skill points (1-6 bonus pts).

    I like to call this game the Dwarf Fortress equivalent for playing a starship captain, only without a user-hostile UI.
    It's not quite that obsessively detailed, but I figure it's a decent elevator pitch.
    Edited to add: You can filter characters ready to level up in your crew screen, it's quite useful.

    • @LordofSyn
      @LordofSyn 3 роки тому +1

      That's a legitimate analogy.

  • @gamingtonight1526

    Updated almost daily, and now a totally different game than when it came out, with much more content and gameplay! The phone game Splattercat played, plus two other earlier games, are all set in the same gameworld! As to the crew. You can filter the crew in various ways, including just the crew that have levelled. This makes micro-managing your crew really easy, as no more than 3-4 crew level up at the same time.

  • @Test-xd8dk
    @Test-xd8dk 3 роки тому +10

    Anyone else worried about the amount of people about to join the STF community and realize just how insanely in-depth it is? Not to hate on the video, but it doesn't really scratch the surface, but then again its only 30 minutes long. Be prepared y'all, what you see in the video is less than 5% of the game. It also has a very steep learning curve.
    Pro tip: if you don't actively be creative with the game and just follow the story, it will be exhausted in under 5 hours, so be ready to pursue goals and try out unique builds. Also, join the discord.

    So, this is basically Escape Velocity with a few minor changes, and a few quite major ones. I love remakes of that game, so this is definitely getting wishlisted if it's not out yet.
    One thing I would miss from EV is the mission board. Before taking each mission, you could click on each one, and know the destination, and it's star system, allowing you to grab a bunch at a time for more money while going in the same direction. In STF, it looks like a single mission proposed to you at random when you ask for it.
    I do love how it shows your possible profits in the trading post, and the whole personnel manifesto. I also like the spice reference, and how it effects moral, like booze does for Stronghold Crusader.
    One thing I'd love to see in the future, and yes, it's something from EV... The sequels were moddable, allowing players to create scenarios, weapons, quests, and all sorts of things, for an ever growing game with infinite replay value. It's something that games like Starbound, Vintage Story, and Minecraft have that really made the games easy to keep playing, even after thousands of hours.

    • @lukusblack6442
      @lukusblack6442 3 роки тому +1

      So, I've just played for about an hour, and noticed one detail that should be looked into. It's hard to figure out where to click... at least in the beginning.
      like Splattercat said, the crew manifest seems a bit harder to read than it should be. One of the sorting options at the top should be 'sort by level *up* ', or that should be the default. This keeps the player from having to scour their manifest, looking for green bits.
      The windows in general are a bit of a pain, as just about nothing has a close box, forcing you to esc, middle-click, or hit the back button every time. Yes, this actually makes things easier, but it's not automatically assumed, leaving people stuck going from page to page, hoping for an exit button, or something.
      Lastly, the map could use one little improvement; Your quest list, and destinations. As it is, unless I'm missing something, you need to go to your quest list, click the quest, hit Waypoint, and close out into the map to see where you need to go... for every quest. I'd stick a small area in the map for quests, with simple one-click waypoint switching within the map itself, so you can quickly see where each quest takes you. Perhaps a permanent ghost path system would be useful as well, showing all the quest waypoints at the same time.
      Anyway, that's just my take. I've played a *ton* of games like this. Aside from a few tweaks here and there, this one is turning out really great.

      it is a hard question but let me tell you some of the main differences that might answer it anyway.
      Star traders has a much bigger starting learning curve and the world does not wait for you. Things are rolling from the day 1, passage of time is a main factor things you miss out on are gone once they pass. You can take part in it or not. So the main difficulty is to be efficient with time while building up or you end up behind curve. Also it has huge amounts of information and menus it is hard to wrap your head around it when you start out.
      Starsector lets you pace yourself start slowly build up at your own pace. Things will not get super out of hand no matter how long you take to get to the end game. Challenges are waiting out there but are fixed to the areas or to your own development. For example you will not have to deal with big invades before you have your colonies developed. Or you will not have to deal with strongest enemies in the game unless you go to where they are.
      So when it comes to pacing and growing in game time star traders is much harder.
      On other hand star traders is a turn based game, while starsector is real time. If you want to be very good at starsector it will take practice. So when it comes to actually being mechanically good at the game starsector is harder.
      And finally there is RNG. Big point in Star traders difficulty is how you deal with RNG and sometimes if you are unlucky you are just unlucky and you cannot do anything about it. Yes you can choose to mitigate it by going full skill save skills but then you lack other skills and are weaker on that front.
      In Star Sector RNG is more forgiving. It is limited to things like world generation, quest generation and so on. Once the fight starts its fair. Also a lot of things that seam random usually have cause and effect and they are actually not as random as it might seam at first.
      Both games are really good it just depends what you like more. Because they are so different if you like space management games i would suggest to try out both. Not sure about developers but star sector has huge moding comunity so if you are into extending your play experience that is the way to go. If you are looking for story and quest on that front star traders is stronger. there is very little of story in star sector apart from the tutorial.
      Hope that helps, have fun :).

    What's the combat like?

    • @TheNeomare
      @TheNeomare 3 роки тому

      space combat is turn based. 1 vs 1 ship combat with various abilities and tactical choices. 5 combat positions with different strengths for different ship systems and crew complements. Possible to board the enemy ship if you get close then it turns into 4v4 turn based positioning combat similar to darkest dungeon.
      Sometimes it feels really unfair and super rng. it is also kind of slow and tedious.
      There are also land combats, 4v4 darkest dungeon style.
      Building and equipping your fighting dudes and levelling them is much more refined and "fun" than the actual combat. If you are into that sort of thing.
      Anyhow i would say people who would like and love this game would do it for different reasons than combat. Combat is in my opinion a necessity for make sense reasons to be there rather than the games strength.
      I personally like to juggle information and plan and build up and collect and for me navigating menus in this game when i tried it was interesting and fulfilling experience but if you are looking for action look elsewhere this is not it.

      Depends what you are after really. While starsector does have lots of stuff star traders does not there are also many things and systems in star traders that starsector does not have.
      I would say biggest difference is that star traders has an evolving world which does not wait for you while in star sector you can take things at any pace you like. Also it actually has a story while starsector has a very limited one. And then there is the level of detail when it comes to crew management and skills it really lets you go deep and gives you many tools to fight the challenges. Also it is turn based which is important for people who do not prefer action based games. Influence and reputation system is a core game mechanic and it works well while i find the reputation system in starsector lacking. It improved over the time but for example NPC rep still does nothing at the time of writing this. Also do not even get me started on randomness of officer skill ups in starsector, why would anyone ever think that is a good idea. Ship balance could use some love as well.
      So while i personally do prefer Starsector because its way more in my alley because of all the nice things it does have which i will not bother counting because since you think its better game should be aware, there are as you see many reasons why somebody would choose star traders to be his or hers favourite game especially in areas where games like Starsector lack

Its like ups this planet does not have spice. Its an in depth tactical game if you do not plan properly it will punish you. What more do you need, seriously? A developer to grant you eyesight?
    In all seriousness I'm not sure if a genie from the lamp could grant you such a wish.
    I don't mind you being a lousy gamer, I got used to it. It's ok, I kind of like you regardless... In a way father would still like his perception-challenged son. However: You need to stop giving advice, as this not only makes developers appear semi-capable and the game undercooked, but is also horribly unfair to everyone who puts their trust to your blind judgement.

      well that is harsh. You are taking stuff way to seriously.
      In my opinion there is nothing bad about giving out ideas, advices and so on as long as they are in good manner and with good intentions.
      Yes it is annoying when he just misses stuff and at this point i just gave up on reason when it comes to some stuff i saw on this channel. So what? It is really not a big deal. However i do prefer good pace with stuff missed over forever long videos which go over every single tiny detail and get nowhere.
      Besides he does good job at hovering over stuff which you can read and notice and pause and read so information is there.
      I also prefer more content over detailed content when it comes to game discovery. If i find the game i like on this channel i can investigate it further on my own.
      Also since you are obviously proud of your own eyesight and do not need a genie yourself use it, so what if Splatty misses some stuff if you care pay attention and you will not. Everyone wins.
      So... just chill? :). It is all okay.

    • @milanstevic8424
      @milanstevic8424 3 роки тому

      @@TheNeomare I can't just "chill" exactly because there is a lot of money involved. game development is not a joke, and you basically end up hinging on some fleeting opinion from some half-assed reviewer.
      this is a business first and foremost. I don't mind him failing miserably and being goofy, but I do mind when his opinions generally affect the product's market perception without any merit to it.
      that is literally his job, he is literally paid to do it. and if that's questionable, what is to be expected from other areas? would you like if you were making chocolates, but some seller of yours said to hundreds or thousands of legit customers that he had a diarrhea after eating them? how would you feel if you knew this was because they had a stale taco prior to your chocolates? would they openly apologize?
      I'm sorry, but this is a very serious matter, as it has a potential to severely hurt someone's reputation or product placement, so it's a form of libel, severity of which depends on whether it was malicious or due to neglect.
      and I don't mind you for approaching this from a casual, gamer perspective, but you need to keep up with what I'm saying here. I am not being harsh, I am realistic, he has a long history of doing this, his voice is particularly strong because he managed to build up a large audience, and there has to be some responsibility involved. the aforementioned seller would be reprimanded at best, but youtubers always somehow get a free pass for doing their job poorly.
      in short, if you are to professionally criticize years of someone's work, and people's buying decisions depend on it, at least make sure to back it up with some sort of evidence of good intent and all kinds of facts based on your experience with the product, and other similar products. you can't just slack around and spread opinions formed around your own poor sight; you have a responsibility of OBSERVING and USING the product in a professional manner.
      if you have perception issues, spend some more time, speak to the developer, get to know the product!
      you perception needs to change: the world has changed, he's not a random youtuber anymore, randomly entertaining a bunch of people, he's a paid promoter of somebody else's work and somebody else's product!
      as much as I hate it, the word influencer exists for a reason.

    • @TheNeomare
      @TheNeomare 3 роки тому

      @@milanstevic8424 Well i suggested you to chill because that is most probably the best thing you can do. For yourself.
      What were you trying to achieve with your comment? I read comments a lot and and from what i can tell most of the people here are fans of the channel which got used and accepted how things are done here.
      I am relatively new and at first i was upset at stuff not because i think he can't do better but sometimes it seams he does not even try and uses the i am bad as an excuse.
      But then i chilled and decided i will not take things seriously and i am better of for it.
      Sure we can discuss if you like, you make some interesting points and yes in ideal world most of the things if not all that you said stand.
      But we are not. Doing influencer/entertainer/reviewer whatever you want call it impression videos is kind of a balancing act between giving useful information while providing fun and to me at least it seams its not easy and it is not for everyone.
      And he is doing a decent job in my opinion, people seam to like it, developers seam respect it and actually want to be shown on the channel.
      As for the quality you criticize i am afraid is the thing of quantity over quality. This channel is based around quantity, new video comes out each day and most games are semi decent at least, that means lots of effort is done to filter out the bad ones and not a lot of time remains to try out the game and make a quality video.
      To make a deep thorough review of the game you would need to put days into the game and that means it would have to sacrifice quantity and many people would not like that.
      Could he change the format? Go more in direction you would want it to? Maybe. But that would change everything and would not be fair to people who are following the channel because of what they are expecting to find here.
      So maybe its best that things stay the way they are.
      As for the developers if their product is good it is often enough for it to get some spotlight even bad marketing is still marketing people recognize what they like.
      So i would not worry about them.

    • @TheNeomare
      @TheNeomare 3 роки тому

      @@milanstevic8424 I agree that with the chocolate example obviously that would be a very bad thing you describe. But in your opinion what are the measurements in which you decide if the youtuber is making a good job or not?
      If you decide its to make quality reviews up to high standards which means not making or making very little mistakes.. then yea maybe he is not doing such a good job. He admits himself he is making mistakes so yea...
      But for me youtuber is not same as reviewer. For me youtuber is making good job if he is interesting and/or relevant enough for people to come and watch the content. Because that is the whole point. Or am i missing something here?
      Yea it would be nice if there was more quality it always is but is the value enough to justify the cost?
      Also i never thought about this channel as review channel. More like impressions channel with some basic filtering beforehand. So that is why i give him way more slack than if for example he would act like being some big time reviewer or something.
      Maybe you should as well?
      And from developer perspective would you rather have your game spotlighted on a channel with decent audience even if the video is sloppy and does mistakes or would you rather you are most probably not at all? Because if there was more quality there would be far less videos and less games spotlighted i can tell you that. No one can cheat time.
